In Kolongowski's debut, 'Life Lessons Harry Potter Taught Me', readers are able to gain a more enhanced perspective on how the beloved Harry Potter books are more than just stories. By including different themes that the author herself has received from the series, in addition to her own life experiences, the book feels both personal and intelligent, offering comfort and insight on the tale of The Boy Who Lived.
The organization of the book is well formatted; each idea is presented in a way that in engaging and informational. By attaching well-known spells directly to different ideas, messages are easy to understand and enable readers to make instantaneous connections with the author's opinions. This format was then further enhanced by the plethora of quotes and evidence from the Potter books to support Kolongowski's points.
While some may not see an analysis of Harry Potter as "bold", I found this novel to be just that. The author shows how the series is not merely just children's books, but rather, can lead to discussions on racism, sexism, the LGBTQ community, and the power of fighting for who you are. These heavy topics are extremely apparent in Harry Potter, and are further brought to life in this book. I was eager to learn from this novel; how can my own ideas of fate and destiny be shaped by Harry's prophecy? How does racism truly affect wizards and muggles alike, whether intentional or not? Ideas like these are by no means simple, however; the author breaks them down into digestible bights through her own anecdotes and examples from the books.
Lastly, the writing style is simply beautiful. On several occasions, I was taken aback by a simple metaphor or a brief moment of imagery. I enjoyed the chance to gain a new perspective; one that was so eloquently established.
Overall, I loved this book. It was easy to read, intellectually intriguing, and most importantly, profoundly magical.
Have you read all 7 books? Well now it's time for book study! The essays are fantastic with observations and analysis of themes within the Potter series interwoven with personal stories that I kept reading ahead when I meant to stop. If a book club starts to go through these essays, I want in. The Potter series means a lot to me, and this serious study of its elements was wonderful for me to immerse myself in. It was the spirit of @wwbookclub again, but far deeper and more personal. It's a must read for serious Potterheads.
That was such a precious and heartwarming book, indeed. The author adds value to the already valued and thoughtful Harry Potter series and reflects on lessons we all learned from the series in a genuine and personal way. I loved the organization of the ideas and thoughts. And the writing style is both very simple and beautiful, making this book a good choice for a light read between huge and heavy reads. I won't say it was an eye-opening or life changing book, but it was wholesome, reflective, and deserved my time! It makes me miss reading the series and watching the movies back to back.
Loved, loved, this book. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me think, and fall in love with the books once again. It made me want to read the Harry Potter saga once more so I can fall in love again and again.
If you've only seen the movies, you'll want to read the series after reading this book. The author's insights will stay with you long after you're done.
A deeper look at what we learned (and partially forgot).
I've been a Harry Potter fan since I was told I HAD to see the first movie. Then, I read them all before seeing the movies from there forward. Jill really touches on many of the reasons Harry has become a lifelong friend, explaining the things we learned and didn't even realize. The characters are real and face real obstacles (even while practicing magic and defeating magical enemies). This is why we love them. Jill did beautifully at putting those reasons into words.
Basta acreditar e acender a luz!
You know that saying, its been said over and over again. And one of my favourite things to do is to pull scenarios from my favourite pieces of literature and compare and contrast them to my own experiences. In Life Lessons Harry Potter Taught Me, Jill Kolongowski does just that. This collection of essays reflect back on the seven book series and in turn draws parallels from our favourite wizards. This book is thought proving, fun to read, and for any Harry Potter fan out there, it may just be a little enlightening.
I found the writing to be fast paced and never found the book to be dragging. There were moments that I immediately connected to and others in which I had to reflect back a bit more.
In the chapter: Sonorus, Kolongowski focuses on the power of words and how they can impact others. She mentions how an old English teacher had written her a letter that said, “Jill’s not a good writer, but she tries hard.” She then goes on to draw comparisons from the books between hurtful words and how the Dursleys used them against Harry etc. And while I found the book to life comparisons…illuminating, I kept thinking back to those words her teacher wrote.
As writers, we are our biggest critics and I think most of us have accepted that. And even though we sometimes welcome criticism, it still hurts and personally, knocks me down a few pegs. I have been told on multiple occasions that I am not a good writer or that I won’t amount to anything in the world of literature. I’ve dwelled on those words over and over again, but then I remember that along with the hammering words of negativity, there were some positive ones in there as well.
I think a lot of the lessons that Jill wrote about will impact a lot of the readers. I connected with many of them and I even started to draw my own conclusions from the book series. I haven’t read Harry Potter as much as she has, but I am currently re-reading the series so who knows what else I will come up with.
Overall, I give this book 4/5 stars. I am not really one to read non-fiction, but I enjoy a memoir-type book once and while. Especially when the Chosen One is involved. If you are a fan of Harry Potter and you have made connections from the series overtime, then you should definitely check this book out. I read it in one day and it really helped me get out of my reading slump!
Kolongowski's debut collection of essays succeeds at investigating the power behind the Harry Potter series. From personal anecdotes to deep cultural criticism, the author continues to remind her readers why the boy who lived was so important to so many. At its highest moments "Life Lessons" reminds us of the struggles of adolescence. From Harry's frequent outbursts of rage or Ron's tendency to abandon the group when things got scary to Hermoine's brave struggle to consistently remain herself. Kolongowski also addresses the struggle that comes with acknowledging adulthood & consequences like realizing a mentor like Dumbledore also may come with their own flaws, a challenge from which not only muggles are spared. At its lowest moments "Life Lessons" utilizes a circular frame for discussion which at times can read as repetitive, but mostly resembles a fan reading & re reading her favorite stories over & over. Rowling should be proud to have a fan to sing a love song so strong & successful.
As a diehard Harry Potter fan, I wanted to love this but came away with mixed feelings. The author divides the Harry Potter series into themes such as friendship, bravery, prejudice, etc. - one chapter per theme - and discusses the parts of the story that fit into each theme. As a nerd, I found some appeal in the author's meticulous sifting, but for the most part, the discussion didn't live up to the title. The writing feels academic, and the author often discusses how she hasn't lived up to the book's inspiration. In one example, she discusses finding herself unable to intercede on behalf of a female student who is uncomfortable with a male student's attention though it is in her power to do so. Right at the end, in the final two chapters, I found myself inspired by her discussion of Hermione's form of feminism, and the necessity and bravery needed to face and feel the range of our emotions, so I was glad I stuck it out. This book would be helpful as a reference for discussing the themes explored.
Life Lessons Harry Potter Taught Me is an enlightening collection of essays that explores the universal themes we learn from The Boy Who Lived (as well as several other characters). Kolongowski organizes the book by different spells, opening each essay with a personal anecdote, which she then connects to broader motifs within the books. For even an avid Harry Potter fan and someone who rereads the series at least every other year like me, she brings in some fresh, unique insights that feel like unearthing entirely new layers in the books—for example, how Ron’s display of everyday forms of prejudice can be the hardest to confront, or how Luna is one of the most exemplar characters when it comes to bravery. I found myself wanting to both tear through this book and savor it slowly, recreating the spell I fell under each time a new Harry Potter book was released. A must-have for any Potterhead—whether you’ve grown up with Harry as I have or are discovering the magic for the first time.
Eu tinha muitas expectativas acerca deste livro.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway, and slowly savored this book.
Beautifully written, and such an enjoyable read. I really like how the author delved into her own life, and was able to make detailed comparisons from the series.
My winning not being a factor(other than I may have missed reading the book)- I would be glad to recommend this book to others.
It stinks to try to have a spot(or any) headache while trying to read...but even though I had a nasty one when picking the book back up to continue at one point(and coincidentally & interestingly being in pain while reading about Harry's pain) i was able to make it through anyways & enjoy the book.
it was cute but the writing isn't the best (go figure) and the points she tries to make about the characters don't always make sense. And the overuse of spells as analogies is reaching too hard.
Save yourself the time and just reread the HP books. This one isn't worth it. Sorry, Jill.
5 Estrelas!
