Someone sent three fully armed ships to High Tortuga to back the slave-owners running the mines, and Barnabas and Shinigami are determined to find out who.

And take them down.

As they look deeper, however, they’ll find traces of an organization that controls whole mercenary syndicates, industries, and even governments: the Yennai Corporation.

They have plans for this sector of space, and they are not about to let humans interfere.

So they’re going to kill Barnabas, and they’re going to make an example of the mine workers he freed.

After all, who’s going to stop them? Barnabas is one human in one ship. They’re sure they can take him out.

…Some people never learn.

NOTE: This book contains cursing. Perhaps humorous cursing, but cursing nevertheless. If this offends you, I don't suggest reading this book.

Natalie Grey

Natalie Grey grew up in rural New England, surrounded by a lot of vegetables and relatively little excitement. Therefore, she was obliged to make up excitement by pretending to be a knight, mage, jet-setting international assassin, jedi, or (occasionally) a shape-shifting dragon. She read everything she could get her hands on, from Lord of the Rings to Modesty Blaise, and eventually started writing her own stories full of what-ifs and snarky put-downs. Now she lives with her two German Shepherd mixes in the frozen wilds of Minnesota, and does a lot of inventive swearing while she shovels.

Sentinel
By Natalie Grey
This was a lot better than book one. The reader learns more about Barnabas. There is plenty of action, and the AI and Barnabas have a close relationship which shows through their banter. They are a great team. Fun story.

More shenanigans. More evil mercs. more Gar!

And we meet Tabitha.... Now I need to read the other books in this world to understand a reference at the end ... Is Barnabus... Very old?

REVIEW UPDATE 2ND PASS
so much of this hits different and better now that I've got a few of the first kurtherian series in my read/listened pile.

Yes, past Fred, Barnabas is very very old.

My original review stands but I want to emphasize that A) a lot of comments are missing context without the main series and one thing I've been finding I dislike is the amount of times an alien species is mentioned by name but not much of a physical description is given.

Still an enjoyable buddy action comedy

Can't wait for the next

Great book. The characters stories and interactions are still top notch. The writing in all of the stories I have read (and I haven't read them all) make you care about the characters. It's what keeps me coming back for more. Oh and I love the humor in the KGU.

Wow! This book was powerful!

I loved that Barnabas was so filled with wrath at what the pirates were doing, that he took them on almost single-handed - apart from Shinigami, and Gus, that is.

I'm really loving the changes involved with Barnabas and Tabitha going from Rangers, to Vigilantes, and I'm really, really, really, looking forwards to all the other books in this series because, if they are half as good as this one is, they'll be totally awesome to read!

I was also absolutely touched at the final chapter, too. I had picked up some of the history of Barnabas' early years, but it was wonderful, and totally saddening, to learn of his complete loss. I admit to feeling a lump in my throat as I read it.

It's reading scenes like these ones, that bring these characters to life for me, and I'm so grateful to authors like Natalie Grey, along with Michael Anderle, for bringing such riches of the human imagination into my life.

Michael always insists that these books are the equivalent to pulp fiction which, by the way, I also enjoyed over the years.

But, as much as I've read all the greats, the Classics, the world changing books that have altered humanity's thoughts about so much, I will always, now, go back to reread this whole gamut of series, and authors, who joined together to bring so much reading pleasure to millions of us, throughout the world!

Why? Because, in my eyes, they do for me, exactly what all those Classics did, when I was first introduced to them - they entertain, educate, and take my soul elsewhere for a time, so that I can escape from my own life, and live someone else's, for a while.

What more can a reader ask of a book, but that?

One of the best in the KGU's many series!

Almost non-stop action that will have you on the edge of your seat, then falling off your seat laughing at the crazy antics of an unpredictable AI, Shinigami, who has a personality that is heavily influenced by Tabatha and Bethany Ann. When you mix this unpredictable AI with the dry, unexpected humor of a former monk the results can go anywhere! Matched with the action and adventure these two get into, along with the additional new crew member, Gar, the story is further enriched. Natalie Grey, once again, has taken the characters developed separately by Micheal Anderle, and enriched their characters further and in ways that were unexpected. I have read most of Ms Grey's books and this one was my favorite! And this series is up there at the top of all the KGU series, in my opinion! (And I've read them all). Highly recommend this book!

I love Barnabas!

I'm loving this series about Barnabas and Shinigami! As time passes and he engages with more people, we see a new side of Barnabas emerging. He's even getting a sense of humor! The creativity in these books is so impressive. Each area on new planets we visit is given depth and detail, as are the people who live there. The stories just sweep you away, and the fight scenes make you wish for your own armor, Jean Dukes, and upgrades, because even though they're fighting they're enjoying themselves way too much! These books are everything you want in a sci-fi fantasy story. Yes, I think you'll enjoy them!

Way to go Barnabas!

So solid 5 star rating!
How could anyone not love reading about Barnabas? And let's not forget Shinigami. She rocks for being an AI.
This second installment to The Vigilante series kicked a$$. The action was rock solid, the main characters are amazingly loveable, and you also get to see some of the other characters from the KG series. All in all, I am anxiously awaiting the next installment. Way to go Natalie and Michael on continuing to create a world where readers love escaping to.

Amazing!

Yes, the plot is tight and the storylines are well crafted, but there is so much more. These are characters that we know and love and we watch them change and grow. It's as if we are uncles and aunts to them. We are sad when they hurt , we are happy with their joy; but most of all, we feel pride at their growth and accomplishments.I
THAT is what has made the KGU the success that it is. And i feel the need to thank ME and all of the authors for allowing us to be surrogate family to BA and the group.

Barnabas

I love this series, Barnabus and Tabitha are some of my favorites from the Kurtherian universe. The style of writing that Natalie Grey and Michael Anderle use is my favorite. They write seamlessly together and I don’t feel like I am watching a tennis match. Sometimes in some of the other series this is the case. Thank you for the wonderful stories you are creating for us.

I am in awe

Thank you for this universe I am shocked and lttle embarrassed that other series universes such Star Trek or Star Wars haven't done this I know other writers have written different books in a universe but the way the Kurtherian universe is so intertwined is amazing and each author throws their own spin on a character and makes them interesting congratulations and a fine work of art

Love, love, love Barnabas and Shinigami, and I love their chess games and how they can't seem to play without cheating. LOL..

Barnabas HATES slavery and he goes about killing everyone who has anything to do with it. He feels guilty for a few seconds but that's enough. Now he's after the head of the group, Yennai Corporation, and I'm sure they think they can take him down, too.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 19 times.

As for the narration: Chris Andrew Ciulla was fabulous!

Wow! I love these books!!
Natalie Grey & Michael Anderle really know how to tell a story!! The characters are not only well developed, but are often laugh out loud funny, even it the worst situations! If you’re a Kurtherian Universe fan, you’ll love the continuation of Barnabas & Shinigami’s adventures! If you’re new, this book stands well alone, but you may want to grab book one, as well!

Explosive!

I was sad when the Rangers were disbanded, and so very excited to see Barnabas come back as a Vigilante! Sentinel is as good as all the other books in the Kurtherian Universe and now I can't wait for #3 to be published!

You’ll be glad to get a peak into this quiet ‘monk’. Barnabas is his name. However it’d behoove you to task your questions to Shinigami, his AI ship. Whether she answers you depends. Don’t bother Gar as he has more exhausting twraining.

Barnabas is trying to evolve from Ranger One into a new roll. Perhaps Vigilante One. I like the appearance of one of my favorite characters, Tabatha. I like the action, snarky humor, and strategy. I look forward to the next book.

Book 1 of the Vigilante Chronicles set a high bar. Up and over that bar with Book 2. Barnabas, Shinigami, And Gar are a great combination. Throw in the bad mercenaries AND Tabitha with the Tonto’s and there you have the mix for a kickass story. Next book please.

Barnabas, Shinagami and Tabitha oh my!

Super follow up to Vigilante 1, kicking butts and taking names! Seems like the bad guys never learn... Shinagami has a bigger role in this one and is growing up. And Gar is too!

I really love Barnabas and his new crew. I also enjoy it when Tabitha and her gang show up. This book was non stop action with lots of bad guys biting it. I cannot wait to read the next one and see what troubles the Vigilantes cause.

The best part I have to say is the ending scene with Tabitha... looking for the testicles of an alien just to find out that instead of being external they were internal ones and bitching about it... Cause she could no longer kick them in.

Finding himself and duty

It's great to see how the Ranger 1 is like Tabitha finding a cause and also exploring how to have friends again.
The characters development and the expected action keeps the pages turning.

Tabitha and the Tonto's are in book two along with Barnabas and the gang. It's so much fun catching up with some of our friends from other books. I'm loving Natalie's style of writing and the care she takes with the characters. Enjoy!

Barnabas and Shinigami lay waste to the bad guys and Tabitha and Tontos get in on the action as well. Need more.
