COMPLETED BOXSET OF THE CROWN AND DAGGERS SERIES! Charming - The Captain - The Prince Once Upon a Time... Nothing ever exciting happens at the Ball. Certainly there are lovely ladies and preening lords, but for Kit, it would be so much simpler to forego the entire event and be knocked senseless dueling than dance another waltz. At least that was until she walked in. Ella thought the night might be perfect to kill herself a prince. Dance, drink, smile for the crowd Easy enough to slip a knife between the ribs and be home before midnight. But the prince wasn’t what she was expecting; and the maiden was unlike any other he’d met. Caught between duty and romance, prophecy and adventure, can two people find a way to be together when city walls stand between them? One waltz at a ball. One trip of a slipper. One Prince. And one Assassin. This is not your childhood Fairy Tale.
As an introduction to the author's NeverLands concept, in which the fairy tales you may have heard aren't full of happy endings and are much more dark and sinister but also all existing in the same world, this was great.
We got the terrific slow-build of the relationship between a Prince and Ella, the Elven woman who leaves her life behind to serve as his captain. There is a lot to enjoy throughout as we get some fun world-building, a curse, a mysterious enemy working to make sure the curse works, heartache and some deeply emotional moments (both good and bad). It's a story of grudges between people and how work and time can have an effect in changing them. It's a story about trying to put duty before personal wants. It's a story about two people and how they come together and the forces around them that work against them and for them.
There's also a General who is essentially caught in the middle of everything while trying to do his duty and protect the Prince. I feel like we need a short story from his perspective of everything that happens in this book because it would be fascinating.
If you're looking for a typical fairytale romance this is not it. Prince Christophe de L'Avigne has a price on his head. One assassin is sent to carry out his death but things don't go quite according to Hoyle. She ends up saving his life against her own people and is banished. The story continues over the next several hundred years and you won't be disappointed with the ending. There are moments of levity anguish and sadness but don't give up on this story because there might just be a happily ever after!
A boxset of the first three stories in the author's series of fairytales. An excellent value purchase for all lovers of the genre, and one which will get you so hooked you'll be buying and reading all the rest of the works afterwards - I did! Loved it
I bought this book at a book convention in Ohio. I took it with me to Jury Duty to read, and had a hard time putting it down. An excellent telling of a Cinderella story, but so much better!
