Corcoran takes some time off as Eureka County Deputy Sheriff to visit an old family friend and stumbles into a land fraud scheme. It gets mighty dangerous as a conspiracy develops, one layer at a time, and bodies begin to pile up. A rancher leaves his foreman in charge in order to get medical help for his daughter and the foreman claims the man abandoned his homestead claim. Corcoran being Corcoran, he meets a charming young lady whose father is an Oregon County Sheriff. He seriously contemplates giving up his badge and settling down.
Mr. Gunn has created a solid , enduring protagonist who bears more than a passing resemblance to" The Man with No Name " ! We find intriguing plots within plots involving well-conceived characters acting believably with each other while confronting a seemingly insurmountable conspiracy hatched by a corrupt Federal agent. The final act was hinted at by the storyline, but the character involved wasn't even on this reader's horizon. Mr. Gunn manipulated and thoroughly captured his audience. Again !!!
RAGE ON THE RANGE is the third installment in the Terrance Corcoran series by Johnny Gunn. In my mind, this is also the best so far in the series.
Corcoran is an Irish knight errant in the old west who often wears a deputy’s badge. He is a champion of the underdog: “If there was one thing in the world that would make Terrence Corcoran turn from amiable to vicious, it was someone taking advantage of someone who couldn’t fight back.”
I especially like the set-up for this book, which is based on a real life incident: An attempt to swindle a homesteader off his land. The plot is more complicated than a bank robbery or cattle rustling. Gunn does a nice job of untangling the complications while keeping the action going. Particularly fun are scenes toward the end when the reader can almost lose track of who is chasing whom.
Corcoran is developing into a more well-rounded character as he balances the tough, independent man of the west with a touch of fun-loving Irish blarney. Interesting supporting characters are also introduced. I was especially taken with Corcoran’s love interest in this tale: Betsy ‘Shaggy Hair’ Schultz.
She is described as “tall, almost six feet…slim to being very thin but shapely as a woman should be. Her eyes were sky blue, her browned cheeks held a soft blush, and her lips were filled with a smile. It was the hair that held his gaze the longest. A squirrel’s nest if he ever saw one. No, maybe more a pack rat’s home. Her hair was so blonde it was almost white and it was filled with curls going every which way, tangled by waves in opposing channels, and Corcoran almost blurted out, ‘Shaggy Hair.’ ”
I always like it when an author introduces a character who has more originality than is often the case.
In the first few books of the series, I found myself distracted by a few of Gunn’s stylistic devices, such as the characters all seeming to “chuckle” in excess or talking excessively to themselves. In this book, the characters do neither to excess, and I for one think it makes the writing that much stronger.
In my mind, this is one of the better action/adventure westerns I have recently had the pleasure to read. We can hope that Corcoran follows his friend’s advice to “nail that badge to your chest and put fear in the hearts of outlaws everywhere.”
I cannot recall reading any books authored by Mr. Gun before Corcoran, but this one will lead to many more. I will read the remaining books of this series and any other by this author. Well written with plenty of entertaining adventures throughout the entire book. Guaranteed action and never ending consistency between Corcoran and the bad guys.
Five stars, and more, says how well this story was written. This western adventure says it all, and the entire story never faltered with the descriptive epilogue from page one until the final exciting paragraph.
I have read several hundred books in the past couple of years and this story ranks very high in the list of all those novels, this far. The storylines were very descriptive, and selective, in that they continuously kept me mesmerized with their never ending consistency of exciting gunplay and adventure. I cannot bestow enough accolades upon the author's candid storytelling and impressive knowledge of the era as I practically became part of the storylines.
I, most certainly, recommend this wonderful, and heartwarming, western adventure, with unlimited action and accountability. Do yourselves a favor and jump on the Corcoran bandwagon, enjoying each and every episode he leads us into. Hot loss if you don't!
Hurray! No superfast, super rich hero. But, indeed, a hero. Lots of action, some funny romance and a heroine with funny hair. Lots of crooks and plots .
This is a great story with a new catch and many twists and turns. Many characters including a funny indian, lot of law-men, a homesteader family and an army post, an indian reservation and lots of humor, suspense and realism. A very believable story with believable characters.
Beyond the typical western with just a simple plot of "bad guys vs. good guys," author Johnny Gunn creatively blends a variety of unusual characters with realistic scenes that bring the tale to life. Just complex enough to add interest, the story is easy reading as it progresses to the ending that won't disappoint readers.
I enjoyed this book. I have enjoyed the Corcoran series. He has a special way of dealing with outlaws. Lots of action and good character developement. I received a complimentary copy for an honest review.

A Terrence Corcoran Western/LandFraud/Cattle Rustling
JG has penned a western where a man and wife homestead three hundred and sixty acres to raise children, cattle, sheep and farm products. Their ranch prospers until the oldest daughter turns ill. The parents move their daughter in town to be close to a doctor and the ranch foreman takes control of the ranch by land fraud. The man behind to work to have his property returned. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Lots of action and fraud going on. Terrence Corcoran, a lawman from Eureka, Kansas on a little vacation visiting friends gets involved in a bunch of lowlifed land grabbers, bank robbers and a trading post owner who cheated the Paiute and Shoshonie Indians and anyone else who did business with this man called Peacock. Peacock ran a network of dangerous psychopathic owlhoots who robbed banks and mine shipments of gold and silver. He had persons who worked in these establishments shop passed information on to him about any big shipments of money or valuable ores. They called her Betsy"Shaggy Hair"Schultz a teacher for the children of the Shoshonie and Paiute Tribes and her father was the Sheriff and property owner of Grant County, Nevada. You will enjoy this action packed double down your throat western law. The lawmen of the West some should have never worn the badge say you will make that determination as you read this story. There's sadness, but also a little humor especially how Corcoran and Shaggy Hair were courting and wowing each other. Loved Chasing Rabbit who could catch large hares and Prairie Chickens by running them down. She ran along side of horses who were trotting at a medium pace. She is know by her tribe for her running abilities, usually it's the men of the tribe that are known for their stamina, but this case it's a young fourteen year old Indian girl showing her capability..can you imagine her running in the Boston and New York City Marathons. Don't forget the Olympics she would win the "GOLD." Men and women who you could the river with..
