Keira Montclair is the pen name of an author who lives in South Carolina with her husband. She writes fast-paced historical romance, often with children as secondary characters.
If she’s not writing, she prefers to spend time with her grandchildren. She’s worked as a high school math teacher, a registered nurse, and an office manager. She loves ballet, mathematics, puzzles, learning anything new, and creating new characters for her readers to fall in love with.
She considers her work done well when her readers shed tears over her stories, but there’s always a happy ending! Her bestselling series is a family saga that follows two medieval Scottish clans through three generations and now numbers over fifty books.
Thank goodness this was a freebie, as if I’d purchased, I would be kicking myself. The foundations of the tale sounded lovely when I read the blurb, but the execution left a lot to be desired. The way things are written and how the characters are portrayed lacked a historical feel and ensured I couldn't ever truly sink into the read. The passion and intensity, I was hoping for just didn't manifest.
Should have DNF at 26%, as things didn’t improve (skim read the last few chapters).
I really enjoyed reading this book. Great characters, personalities, strength and courage, trust and hope, a little action and some suspense. This was written well and caught me from the beginning. Good for the snuggle-in escape. Enjoy!

It's been a while since I've sat down with a romance I knew I could finish in an afternoon. HIGHLAND RETRIBUTION was on my TBR pile, and I figured I'd breeze through it during one of our family reading nights.
HIGHLAND RETRIBUTION is a historical romance set in 1280's Scotland and features Braden Grant and Cairstine Muir - two young people with vastly different upbringings.
Braden has a quick and violent temper, but he's been raised to do the right thing, to never hit those more vulnerable than himself, and to protect women and children. He's recently lost his closet friend to an apparent suicide, and the brief encounter with a beautiful young stranger seems to have had a powerful impact on him. Every instinct inside Braden drives him to seek her out and learn more about her situation - little does he know that learning about her will draw him and his cousins into danger and deeper into an ongoing mystery surrounding apparent child trafficking.
Cairstine is in a bad situation - the man who killed her entire clan has been holding her hostage for 6 years, their child is the shackles he uses to control her. When she encounters the handsome stranger at a wedding feast that she and her captor were not invited to, her heart begs the heavens to send him to help her. But first, she needs to make sure her son is safe, and her journey out of captivity is a rollercoaster of emotions and danger.
This is a quick read. Not the best romance I've read lately, but certainly a satisfying read. The characters don't always have distinct voices, which was a disappointment - this is the third book in a series, and I would expect that at this point, the author would have sufficiently developed her characters and their voices. Aside from that, if you enjoy hunky Scottsmen, action, and mystery, snag this book for a quiet evening reading.
Highland Retribution (The Band of Cousins Book 3) by Keira Montclair is an intriguing Medieval Scottish Romance set against a Scottish backdrop. While, #3 it can be read as a stand alone.
Fast paced, magnificently crafted, with a wonderful and charming cast of characters. The storyline is unpredictable, intriguing, compelling, adventurous and suspenseful with dark secrets and kidnapped young bairns who are sold for profit. The chemistry between Braden Grant and Cairstine Muir is romantic, and magical. Cairstine is such a strong character. She has been though so much in her young life. She was kidnapped, abused, watched her entire clan murdered, held captive for years but still has a ember of hope, someone will help her and her young son.... Enter Braden, who is brawn, has a temper, handsome and will become her protector and avenger, but can she trust him with the life of her young son? Cairstine's young son helps to carry this story along, he is brawn and determined to help his mother. I so enjoyed this little man, his determination is magnificent. Follow this amazing couple on their journey of discovery, hope, love, and a HEA. Ms. Montclair has once again written an emotionally charged, high impact tale that will draw the reader in from the first page to the last and then it lingers in your thoughts long after the last page. I can't wait to read the next installment of (The Band of Cousins " series. Brilliantly written and excuted! Well done, Ms. Montclair!!
This is the third book in the series The Band of Cousins and it was as good as expected. It was great to see the family being strong and standing with each other again. I enjoy the story of the kidnapped children running through each story and look forward to reading the next saga. The story was well thought out and was great to see so many characters from the past. The main characters had a great repoire against the odds. This book can be read as a stand along but it very enjoyable reading about old friends. There is sex in the story and as usual this reviewer skipped it and it did not impact my enjoyment of the book and will continue to read and enjoy the next in the series. I received this book as an ARC and look forward to the next.
These books are pretty quick reads. Braden and Cairstine are cool. I don't think there was anything particularly stand out about them but also nothing that I really hated either.
This is a good Highlander romance, and a good addition to the Band of Cousins series. It can be read standalone, but will be much better if you read the Clan Grant series and Highland Clan series first. That is because there are many, many characters in this story, most of whom were introduced in one of the other two series.
This one gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded up to 4 stars.
I liked Braden, and thought he was good for Cairstine. From the first time he saw her, he immediately decided that helping her was his top priority -- and I liked that.
*** Spoilers Follow ***
I liked Cairstine, and understood how her fear and trauma drove her behavior. What happened to her and her family was incredibly sad, and she was still being held captive many years later. I did think, though, that her recovery from her terrible trauma was too quick. Her only experience with sex was rape, followed by years of sexual captivity and violence from a very evil man -- so I don't think she would have been willing to have sex with Braden so quickly, and certainly not without quite a bit of fear. Survivors of rape and violence usually take many years to recover, and some never completely recover.
*** End of Spoilers ***
I was glad that Braden and Cairstine found their HEA -- they were good together, and she definitely needed someone to help her and be in her corner.
I also liked most of the other characters, especially little Steenie and Paddy the pony, who were adorable. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
All I can really say is that Keira ha she done it again. I'm not sure how she brings these people so alive as if you're right there w them. Looks like she's on another very successful series w the Band of Cousins. Anybody who has followed her previous series w the Grants and Brodie's will live these books as you find out how the younger generation are doing w glimpses of your old favoured characters. Also, anyone looking for a new series to read will be instantly captivated and want to read all about the rest of the Grants and the Brodie's as well as their offspring. She's masterful with telling a great story that you'll be holding your breath as it plays out and crying w things work out. She's extremely adept at making you feel like your either the hero Braden or the heroine Cairstine. I'd still love to know how she came up w Cairstine. I can barely put this book other than sheer exhaustion cause I can't wait to see what happens. You'll go thru a tumour of emotions and love to keep this book to read over and over again. If I could give it more stars I would. You'll just have to read it for uourselves to understand since I will not leave any spoilers here. I loved it and you will too
This was a different story of any I've read of this time period, but because of the lawlessness and the many vicious men roaming about without home and place I think it would be entirely possible. At this time period the only family member that was guaranteed a position in the family was the eldest son and if there was no money that was not a sure thing. That left an overwhelming number looking to get what they could and many not trained for a way to make a living.. The Lamont brothers seem to fit this scenario since they had a castle that they abandoned because it was rundown says they had no sire to run things and their answer was to take what someone else had so it seems they had no one to guide them to be better men. Also women were so disrespected at this time Cairstine's life mattered not at all as anything other than a sex object. When Braden saw Cairstine for the 1st time he recognized her beauty, sadness and pain and they called out to the honorable man he was and he felt he had to rescue her. His Clan Grant was a clan that honored and protected all women regardless of age or situation . Even more was her 5 year old son Steenie that was also being beaten. He could not tolerate this to continue and that begins our true love story.
Another winner from Keira Montclair! Cairstine Muir is a quiet, strong, young woman who has been held captive since an army attacked her family's keep 7 years ago & butchered everyone but her. Cairstine was taken by the leader for his own & she has given up ever leaving but promises to keep her wee son safe. Her son is lost & her captor, Greer Lamont & her are out looking for him when they come upon a wedding feast & Greer decides he is hungry. With all the people at the celebration, Braden happens to meet Cairstine & can see the fear in her eyes & knows she needs help. The two of them have a lot of sadness with her captivity & loss of family & Braden's loss of his best friend, Ronan who took his own life but Braden still blames himself for not knowing/saving him. There is so much going on in this story & it keeps you turning pages like crazy - it has murder, mystery, sadness, romance, love & a HEA. I volunteered to receive a complimentary RC in exchange for an honest review. I am so happy to recommend this to everyone!
What an enjoyable read! Braden is such a nice hero. The heroine had been through such heartache. Her son is her life and she will endure anything for him. Braden can visually see her pain that is reflected in their eyes and decides to be her champion. He himself has to deal with several things such as learning to control his temper which is a feat in itself and also dealing with guilt because of the death of his best friend to which he has several questions bouncing around in his head still. Steenie was a wonderful new character which I can Envision seen him having his own story in the future.
It was really great to see that the rest of the band of cousins we're in this story. Also some of our beloved Heroes and heroines from the original books in the series such as Alex Grant and Maddie, Braden's parents which are Brodie and Celestina, Robbie and Carolyn and Loki and Kenzie.
I wanted to witness how Steenie dealt with things at the end more. Other than that, the story was a really good story. I look forward to book 4.
I have liked this family since the very first and to have a continuation with the cousins is my kind of heaven, that being said, this is the third book in this particular series and we once again travel to the Highlands were we meet up with Braden Grant who is still grieving the loss of his friend who took his own life, feeling guilt as to why he didn't see it coming and helping him, Braden meets Cairstine Muir who is being held as a prisoner in her own keep by the man who killed her family. Of course we all know that Braden was not at fault for what happened to his friend but he feels as though he now has a chance of atoning the death of his friend by helping Cairstine, of course love also comes into play. Exciting, edge of your seat action and romance, I loved this story and it has quickly become one of my favourites.
I received an early copy and I am voluntarily leaving my own honest opinion
Highland Retribution by Keira Montclair Band of Cousins Series Book Three Braden Grant was celebrating with his relatives when he first saw her. A green-eyed beauty. Only her eyes were sad and pleading for him to help her. As a Grant, he could do no less than rescue her.
Cairstine Muir had only one reason to live. Her son. If not for him, she'd leave...and if she died doing so, it would've been okay. But she did have her son and would do anything to keep him safe. There had to be a way out of the hell she lived—she just didn't know where the exit was.
Clan Grant is the largest in the Highlands. Some of the mightiest warriors. A clan you want on your side—not against it. Unfortunately for the fools who didn't realize this...they made an enemy. Another great story among the Highland cousins. **Sexual content http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
Definite 5 stars. I always love to spend time with Grant/Ramsay Clan and families. This book took my interest at beginning and took me through to the end. It was the rescue of a woman and wee son by a wonderful hero. It was full of intrigue, romance, a little spice adding to story. It had two villains that you wanted to see get revenge against. As usual there is the large family there for advice, protection, and most of all love. You wish you could be part of this wonderful family. You can’t find place to stop reading, always want to see what happens next. I advise to start at beginning book about this family as characters reoccur in following books. Loved the hero and heroine. I do recommend all this author’s books. I’m waiting for next one.
The story line was good but there were a few expressions that were too modern. Also there were several places that just skipped to a totally different scene. Not sure what happened there.
And seriously, does anyone else have a problem with these romance novels starting sex scenes with oral sex. I can’t imagine Cairstine performing oral sex on Braden when she had been abducted, raped and abused by Greer. I would imagine that Greer forced her to do many things. I just don’t see her going straight to her knees for Braden before any other love making. That is not tenderness that I would think someone like her would need. Just my opinion.
This book has a big case of insta-love, which could be forgiven if the author had shown the couple's relationship further developing over time, but that never really happens. The girl is rescued, but then they just declare their love for each other, which didn't seem quite earned. I also think that it suffered from too many plotlines, there were three major stories, and they all could been more than enough on their own. I will say I think the author did a really good job writing the POV of the five year old child, and how his interest keep jumping from thing to thing, and at one moment he wants to be warrior, then a falconer, etc., just like you imagine a child's mind would work. Overall, a light read, but it had the potential to be more.
A Really Good Story Not For The Faint At This is quite a story with lots of horrible happenings. The characters were well described and relatable. Cairstine is a lovely strong character and Braden was so kind but had a bad temper he was working on. The H and h together brought much love and compassion to each other. A wonderful romance of love at first sight. Villains were awful and very abusive. Band of cousins continue to discover more child kidnappings . Dangerous, thrilling, situations had me glued to the story. Many heart pounding things transpired. Heartfelt ending and so many of the families coming together at the end was beautiful. A few shocking moments and a HEA finished off the story and has me anxious for the next in the series. Mature reader: Heat level: 2 out of 5
Another fabulous book by Keira Montclair! Once again, her fabulous writing draws you into the story and makes you fall in love with the characters. I love that The Band of Cousins series has an interwoven story line throughout all the books while they each also have their own individual story. It's also great to have some favorite characters from the previous series, such as Loki, make appearances. I was sad when I finished the book since I now have to wait for the next one! I recieved an ARC and voluntarily wrote my review
I have read every one of Keira Montclairs books. Each and every time I've started one, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. They get you so engrossed, right from the start of the story. This book was no exception. This is a love at first sight storyline, as well as a damsel in distress storyline . It also continues the storyline of trying to find the men who are kidnapping children to sell them abroad. Keira' s books are never a disappointment. Read and enjoy!
I had a hard time liking the female lead, her son was an annoying simpleton, and the "hero" was alternately an uncontrollable hothead or chivalrous gent. When he's told to wait for morning with everyone else (with a wink and a nod), he of course takes off early and fucks things up... But never fear because her kid did worse and took along another kid who should've known better ("Gee, do I call for help and stop him? Nah, I'll just follow along!")
Never fear, there's always a happy ending--as well as an escaped villain to set up the next sequel. 🙄
Though I have not read every one of her books, by reading many of them, I fell in love with Clan Grant and Clan Ramsay through the generations. This particular tale is a great love story that includes as a central theme, the neverending fight against human trafficking, especially the exploitation of. women and children. It is as relevant now as it has been in any century. All of the Band of Cousins books deal with the subject and are well worth reading.
Great book. Cairstine witness her family murder at their castle and was kidnapped six years ago. In that time she was raped and born a son and she was trapped as she was unable to escape and she wouldnt leave without her son. Braden meets her at one of his cousins wedding reception when she and Greer showed up looking for her son after he wandered off. He is determined to save her and her son.
Cairstine has been held captive by the Lamont brothers for 6 years. She watched as the brothers cut down her parents and brother in front of her. With her five year old son, she yearns for freedom. Braden Grant is pushed from behind by an impatient visitor to his cousin's wedding party. After the manslaps the woman he's with, Braden attacks him. Will braden be able to hold h i temper long enogh to save Cairstine?
Terribly mistreated and kept as a prisoner, Cairstine had given up hope of ever having herself and her son rescued. Braden, a warrior attending a clan wedding sees Cairstine and realizes she needs help and vows to do so.
I loved the strong characters and the storyline. Though I would have given 5 stars but found it hard to comprehend that after being held captive for 5 years and raped...she didn’t experience any emotional trauma when she was first intimate with Braden.
I loved this story. There is so much mystery to Cairstine, but she is a woman worth fighting for, because Braden is beginning to believe her. He doesn't understand why Ronan killed himself, but Braden is willing to protect the woman Cairstine hidden in a ruin of a castle. Cairstine is protects herself and her son by secreting her son away. His identity and whereabouts are the utmost importance to her. Meeting Braden gives her hope. We all need hope.
Similar to Alex and Maddie when they first met except for a child. Story about betrayal, love, abuse and family. Several characters from the other books. This is Brandens story where he finds out what really happened to his friend Ronan and savining mother and child from the murderers he killed her family and took her captive.
I love the band of cousins series! A great group of characters and always a new addition to keep the story interesting. I would love to read more of this tale and more of Paddy the pony who I love!!! Great magical touch! I hope he has a starring g role as the tale goes on! Great read!!!
Ms. Montclair has done it again! As with the other stories about The Band of Cousins , this novel is written with all the magic and love, family love, friendship and love for other people, as well as love between humans and animals. An excellent job. I would recommend this book ,especially to lovers of Highlander tales.
