Ο πόλεμος του Μπάιρον: Ρομαντική εξέγερση, Ελληνική Επανάσταση
Ο Ρόντρικ Μπήτον επανεξετάζει τη ζωή και το έργο του Λόρδου Μπάιρον μέσα από τη μακρά διαδρομή της σχέσης του με την Ελλάδα. Αρχίζοντας από τα νεανικά ταξίδια του ποιητή την περίοδο 1809-1811, ο συγγραφέας παρακολουθεί τα χρόνια της φήμης του στο Λονδίνο και της αυτοεξορίας του στην Ιταλία, που κορυφώθηκαν με την απόφασή του να αφοσιωθεί στον αγώνα της ελληνικής ανεξαρτησίας. Στη συνέχεια διερευνά τη δραματική αυτομεταμόρφωση του Μπάιρον από ρομαντικό εξεγερμένο σε έναν "νέο δημόσιο άνδρα", ο οποίος υποτάσσεται για πρώτη φορά σε μια συγκεκριμένη πολιτική υπόθεση, προκειμένου να βάλει τα θεμέλια, στη διάρκεια των "εκατό ημερών" του στο Μεσολόγγι, ενός νέου είδους πολιτικής στην Ευρώπη - αυτής του έθνους-κράτους όπως το γνωρίζουμε σήμερα.

I admit that Lord Byron's life really fascinates me. During the course of years, I have read quite a few biographies, fiction inspired by the persona of the 'byronic' hero and many articles. In the highlights of my fascination with his lordship are included a class on 19th-century English Romantic Poetry which I attended during my BA course and a visit in The Messolonghi Byronic Society.
That said, I believe I have a good grasp of all things Byron. But what I always found rather puzzling was the reasons why he ever chose to be involved actively in the Greek revolution at the first place? What on earth was he thinking to join the Greek cause, travel in Greece and eventually die there?
Most biographers have the tendency to focus more on the notorious image Byron and/or society created for himself rather than try to understand his real motives or thoughts. So imagine my pleasant surprise when I discovered this book. 'This might be my chance to get to understand better what happened during the last days of Byron's life', I thought. To my surprise, I actually did.
I think Roderick Beaton succeeded in where so many others have failed. By conducting a thorough research on Byron's own letters, his poetry and accounts of people that were in direct or indirect contact with him at the time, he managed to present a very convincing case of Byron's potential motives.
The book is divided into two main parts: in the first part we are briefly introduced into Byron as a poet. However, for those that might seek a full-fledged biography, please note that this book is not one. All the information provided in the first part has been carefully selected to illustrate Byron's decision to go to Greece and be 'useful' to the Greek revolutionaries. The second part introduces us to Byron the statesman or rather the statesman-to-be. By the end of the book, I think you will have a better understanding of Byron's quest and his transformation from a man of words to a man of deeds.

I found the book very interesting to read and actually very enlightening. It was really good for once to read something about Byron that did not eulogise or demonise him but rather attempted to approach him as a human being - with flaws, struggles and virtues.

Από τα ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία του βιβλίου που δεν το κάνουν άλλη μια βιογραφία, η σύνδεση της εξέλιξης της ζωής του Μπάιρον με τα έργα του αλλά και η δική του προσωπική εξέλιξη από ποιητή σε δημόσιο/πολιτικό πρόσωπο, η δική του δηλαδή προσπάθεια λύσης των εσωτερικών του συγκρούσεων: πχ ένας αριστοκράτης αφοσιωμένος σε επαναστατικό σκοπό.

"Ο Ζίγκμουντ Φρόυντ, όταν πάτησε για πρώτη φορά το πόδι του στην Ακρόπολη, μίλησε για μια "διαταραχή της μνήμης", την οποία αργότερα θα περιέγραφε ως τον συγκλονισμό που βίωσε ανακαλύπτοντας ότι κάτι που μπορούσε να θυμηθεί, ως ιδέα, από τα πρώτα παιδικά του χρόνια, υπήρχε πραγματικά. Κάτι παρόμοιο φαίνεται να αισθάνθηκε κι ο Μπάιρον, μια και περιέγραφε, περίπου έναν χρόνο αργότερα, πώς:
ο νους μας λαχταρά καθώς το βλέμμα ατενίζει
σκηνές όπου παλιότερα όνειρά μας έχουν κατοικήσει.." [σ.50]

Of all the colorful characters to emerge from the second generation of Romantics, Byron has to be my favorite (maybe second favorite in a pinch), and books like Beaton's Byron's War exemplify why.
Impulsive, rash, uncertain, impetuous, generous and selfish by turns, reluctant to commit to a cause and then wholly committed once he did- Byron was exceedingly and entirely Real. He is impossible to study without nuance and Beaton captures the nuance of his character brilliantly.
Comprehensive in scope, Byron's War does not start with what the title implies, the Greek Revolution in which he was embroiled at the end of his life, but rather with Byron as a young man first experiencing Greece and the personal liberation it meant for him. From those early days and the passions of a poet beginning to discover himself, Beaton follows the development of a man through triumphs, outrages, disappointments and redemptions.
Byron is drawn with a wry eye and an unmistakable fondness for him, for all his foibles. A must read for any Byronic scholar and likely enjoyable for the casual fan of Romanticism or Greek historians, Byron's War is excellent all the way around.
