Mark Rosenthal and ‘Animal Magic’ are known and respected nationally, but I’ve always thought of them as a local organization since they’re near me in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. When I found a malnourished tortoise in my backyard a few years ago it just made sense to call Mark about it. He was very helpful and met with me to pick up the tortoise so that he could donate it to an out-of-state zoo where a specialist would get it the help and care that it needed.

Recently I came across Mark’s book “Animal Magic” and bought it simply because of our encounter and my slight connection to him. I knew nothing about this book before seeing it in the store. I didn’t even know that it existed. However, once I picked it up I could barely put it down. It was so good that I finished it in just two days!

This book consists of 36 chapters, each being its own story, and each being Mark’s real life experiences with animals. Some of these stories are hilarious, some are scary, some are heartwarming, and all of them are interesting and enjoyable to read! I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I will just say that Mark has dealt with every kind of animal that you could imagine, he’s been in some really bizarre and dangerous situations, and it’s honestly quite amazing that he has lived to tell about all of it!

When Mark took the tortoise we found roaming around in our yard I did not realize the scope of his animal rescue and sanctuary
