I stumbled upon this book at the library while I was shelving books in the juvenile section. This rendition of the tale of Achilles (a pretty accurate rendition if I'm remembering the Iliad correctly) is filled with interesting illustrations that perfectly match the poetic tone of the book. If you have an interest in the story of Achilles, this short book is worth a read.
I would recommend this book to: Greek myth nerds, people trying to meet their Goodreads goal, and kids who just got themselves a library card and want to take it for a spin
1. This book did not win any awards. 2. 2nd - 6th Grade 3. This book tells the tale of Achilles. It is very accurate and outlines his entire life. The whole story is written as a poem but it is has tough words for young children to understand. 4. This is a good book and has a lot of detail. I do not like the illustrations in the book they are definitely creepy. This book is good for people who really enjoy Mythology. 5. I would not use this book in my classroom, I think there are other books about Greek gods that are more attractive and inviting for students.
Myth Landmann, Bimba. The Fate of Achilles (2011). The fate of a famed Greek hero is told from his birth to his end, involving destiny intervened by the gods and promises of eternal honor and glory. This hero myth outlines the glorious life surrounding Achilles and is told in an ominous narration weighted with the knowledge that the fate of death is inescapable and directs the world to make it so. Bimba Landmann is both author and illustrator who paints large images and uses primary colors that depict tribal-like figures and settings emphasizing the other-worldly scenarios of the Grecian world of mortals and immortals. The life of Achilles is told like a sad song in this picture book of irreversible destiny and may be read aloud to older children. Ages 6-12.
