Sofia Grey had written a true suspense. Several times I was sure I knew who it was......several times I was wrong. The characters and the story move along at a good pace that lets the story develop nicely

I just don't know about this story. I wanted to really love it and I don't know if my head got in the way or what but it just didn't do it for me. There are too many things about the characters and decisions that were made that I just can't get past. These are supposed to be smart and reasonable people but they do some of the dumbest stuff. Something would happen and you get caught up in it and then . . . yeah I know I am in the minority and since I love this author's work I am gonna say it's a one up. I am going to read more because I like her work and I am hoping the next one will make up for this one. Like I said there are good parts about the book and that's why I could give it this rating for me the characters (not all of them but enough of them) just didn't work for me. It's a good story with plenty of action and chaos. Yes there is cheating. Yes there is tragedy.

Lying in Shadows, the first book of her new Event Horizon series appears to be set before the events of Sofia Grey’s bestselling Talisman series, but many old book friends do appear.

Marianne is a fast-rising young executive who has just been put in charge of the elite team charged with uncovering the source and target of corporate espionage at her American-based company. She returns to London, where her new boss is Marcus. Marianne and Marcus have worked together in the past and never acknowledged their mutual attraction—Marcus because he has a wife and baby, and Marianne because she’s never gotten over her former lover, the rocker AJ who now heads up super band, Event Horizon.

The long hours and high stakes of their investigation take their toll on all members of the team. As admin Sylvie and forensic accountant Rico begin a tentative relationship, Marcus and Marianne become lovers. Meanwhile, Marianne’s old lover Alex (now AJ) is rescued from a suicidal depression when he meets his new neighbors and their houseguest, each of whom is related and/or married to someone on Marianne’s task force.

Meanwhile, a sinister and shadowy figure lurks in the background, twisting all these all these characters and their varied story threads toward his own malevolent ends.

As mentioned in my reviews of some of her earlier books, I admire author Grey’s command of character development, split-second thriller pacing, and especially her fearless approach to mashing genres and subverting tropes. In Addiction, for example, the usual Good Girl gets Bad Boy trope that’s powered everything from Georgette Heyer’s regency rakes to most of Hollywood is subverted when her Good Boy hero goes after the motorcycle-riding, addiction-dependent, leather-wearing Badass Girl.

In this new book, though, Sofia Grey moves past genre mashing through a breath-stealing parade of genres–rock star romance, marry-the-boss, star-crossed lovers, tragedy, thriller, corporate espionage, love triangle… no wait… love tetragon… or maybe love hendecagon…or big-friggin-love-mess-agon… where everyone has slept with everyone else at some point, all while being shot, stabbed, beaten up, kidnapped, and bitch-slapped.

And she nails it.

Each character is so well-drawn that the huge cast is memorable and three-dimensional. But in what I’m coming to see as author Sophia Grey’s trademark, each character is also fundamentally flawed—toting emotional baggage, scars, or still-open wounds. Their wounds also blind each in some basic way, leaving them unable to correctly interpret or even perceive the true feelings and motivations of those around them.

Lying in Shadows is not a perfect book. The villain, oddly, is so flatly malevolent that some of the suspense leading to the undoubtedly adrenaline-pumping climax is muted. But for me, the biggest problem is that I just didn’t like the main characters, Marianne and Marcus. She came across as emotionally dishonest and manipulative, while he was weak and whining. It was hard (okay, impossible) for me to root for these star-crossed lovers, when they seemed to have so little regard for the other lives—wife, child, lover, employee, friend—being smashed by their relationship.

But, as with all Sofia Grey novels, if you’re willing to take on a large cast of flawed characters who grow, love, suffer, and above all change during the course of the book, Lying in Shadows is a good choice. And if you’re looking for a book whose steady pace and world building hurls to a breath-stopping climax, Lying in Shadows makes a terrific start to a new series. As always, I can’t wait to see what Sofia Grey comes up with next.

This book was the first I read by Sofia Grey. The writing was great, the suspense was thrilling. I liked how the author introduced so many different characters and how their roles in the big picture were revealed step-by-step all throughout the story. There were secondary characters (Kate and Jordan, Anita and Jon) whose stories have already been told in a previous book and made appearance here but this story could definitely be read as a standalone. The plot has quite a few twists and turns - some predictable, others not so much - which keep the story flowing and the reader interested.
On a personal level I have ambivalent feelings about the story. I just hate cheaters and can't absolutely tolerate so obviously I couldn't like Marcus. At all. Also I got fed up with the behaviour of his wife. Big time. Both Marcus (H) and Marianne (h) had quite a few personality flaws which didn't sit well with me. On the other hand I definitely liked where they ended up. There was an epilogue but I would have liked a bit more details on what happened to the characters (the H and h mainly) after this ordeal they all suffered.
So aside from some unforgivable flaws of these fictional and also precarious and fallible characthers this was a very good book. It kept me interested. This story reminded me that life isn't all flowers and rainbows and full of picture perfect flawless people. Characters with flaws and mistakes and bad decisions make them more human and less fictional after all.

Marianne needs to find who's leaking secrets from her company before they lose another major contract. She is usually good about not mixing her professional life with her personal life, but her boss, Marcus, is another story. An affair with him is bad enough. Even worse, to fall in love with him. The security leak is more than a case of commercial espionage. Someone is lying in the shadows, playing games with them. More than her heart and career are at stake--her life is on the line. This is a hyped up spy novel. Some are saying this is about the band and AJ, but he seems to take second chair to Marianne's story, which does interconnect with AJ. She claims to have loved him since they were young, but he runs back to her sister. I did like the many interweaving story lines. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Copy received from author in exchange for an honest review

This story has a different feel to most of SG's other work - in a good way. I wouldn't exactly say that it's my kind of book but I can't fault the theme or the writing style or the fact that it kept me interested and guessing right the way through. I was sure I had sussed out the baddie but well, I was wrong.

This book is the first in the ‘Event Horizon’ series. They're a rock band whose lead (A.J.) is still struggling to cope, a year after the death of his brother and finds himself becoming far too friendly with the bottom of a bottle. The band itself doesn't feature a whole lot and is more of a side subject than a main one.

The story is split between Wales and England and centres around a tech company who find themselves rapidly losing business as their plans are leaked to the public. What they can't work out is 1. who is the leak and 2. how they are getting access to such sensitive information. Experts are drafted in and very quickly everyone is under suspicion and no-one knows who they can trust and who they can't but someone is cleverly manipulating them all and leading all involved to jump to the wrong conclusions. Throughout the book, we hear snippets from the POV of the culprit who clearly has a huge score to settle. You can almost imagine them sitting behind a desk, stroking a white cat and making plans for world domination.

I can't really say that there were any characters that would be considered the main ones because all (eight, I think) played their own part. I was impressed by the way that they all had their own stories going on and that the characters were all linked in some way - even if they didn't know it in the beginning. The story was easy to follow and I wasn’t confused by so many people being involved. What did get on my nerves was how incestuous a group they were. No-one seemed capable of dating/lusting after/sleeping with a character who was single. There were two love triangles going on and they were forever changing their mind about who they really wanted to be with. They were a close-knit group so how did they think their shenanigans were going to stay secret for long?! Come on guys, have a bit of self-respect. I guess it added a whole other layer of drama to the story.

The ending was a happy one of sorts. Two guys get their girl and someone dies *gasps* but essentially we just jump forward a few months and are left to presume everyone moves on successfully. There is no cliff-hanger and this could easily be read as a standalone novel. With so many characters and their individual stories being somewhat rounded off, I have no idea what the next instalment will be about but I hope it's as good as this one was.

This a fast paced, action packed romance novel! The author switches between characters, but I feel it enhanced the story most of the time. Without revealing too much, I will say the ending was a happy ending, just not the one I wanted. There were too many things that happened that frustrated me with the characters lol. There is one scene in particular where I *should* be sad but I was not. I wish the author had gone into more detail about a past event...maybe it gets revealed in the next book 🤷🏻‍♀️. Still, it was a page turner and I definitely recommend.

Lying in Shadows is an engrossing story of corporate espionage and revenge. The characters are well written and powerfully portrayed. I was pulled into their drama and quickly cared what happened to them even though they had their flaws. I was disturbed that Marcus had an affair with Marianne, his employee, even though he was married. Cheating is not an admirable trait. On the other end of the scale, I admired Rico Sanchez for his intelligence and his street smarts. He was able to see the big picture and wouldn't be stopped by violence or threats. AJ, a world famous musician, gave the story a different perspective. Sofia Grey did a wonderful job. She was able to bring these characters together in a dangerous adventure and to combine it with a passionate romance. London and the English countryside are the perfect setting for this suspenseful story. The ending had me on the edge of seat. I was floored by what happened. I never saw it coming. I can't wait to see what happens next since this is the first book in the Event Horizon series.

Lying In Shadows

What a fantastic story!
I was so blessed to be able to read this book a few weeks before ARC's officially came out,
so I've been chewing at the bit to get my review out there!
Thanks you to Ms Grey for considering me for pre reading your baby!

This is a new series for Ms Grey, who has enthralled us with anything from techy tales of
romance to shape shifters, and even an M/M short story. Her imagination is endless, and her
writing is improving more with every wonderful word she brings us.

Take a lot of care with reading Ms Grey's books, you will not only find intrigue and twists galore,
but crossovers through her series.... they might be small but they are there!

As has become her trademark, Ms.Grey writes about things shes know, her homeland, England, her adopted home of New Zealand and of course her other characters, hence the cameo's from people we know.

Alex Hamilton, is a rock god, but is hiding from the world with his new best friend, a bottle or six of Vodka. unfortunately for him his neighbors come a knocking and that seems to be it for his wallowing.
Meanwhile in London, Marianne has just arrived at her new job, having been called in to help track down the 'leak' they have found in their computer system. This woman! On the flight over all she had done was think of AJ, she has had a thing for him since they were kids, but once at TM-TEC, her thoughts shift to Marcus, and whether it would be worth her time becoming involved with a married man.!! What!!?

She was looking forward to this project for a number of reasons. Not only the huge responsibility, but also because being in London again would be good. She hadn’t worked in the U.K. for years, or spent much time recently on British soil, but some things were hard to forget. English fish and chips, and a decent roast beef Sunday lunch were top of her list.
Catching up with her family? Not so much.
Then, there was Marcus. If she ever considered breaking her rule about getting involved with a co-worker, Marcus would be her downfall. Especially since he was now her boss.

This is really AJ's story, but because Marianne is such a big part of that we get her story as well, so all in all Two For The
Price of One!

This is an extremely busy book, that has a fair bit of Tech Talk in it, but not without good reason, as that's a huge part of the story.
I was taken in immediately by the story, and strong characters, who you will either love or hate. My heart went out to AJ, and Rico was right up there on my popular character's list, but Maryanne, I wanted to choke her!, and Marcus became a pawn to her queen, easily manipulated by her, I felt.

I can hardly wait to see where we will go on the journey as we follow our new characters through their story!
Fantastic work Sofia Grey! You just get better all the time!

This is a brand new series from one of my fav authors. I was super excited to read this one, I love rock stars books. This one was more in the mystery/thriller category and was overall a bit creepy. It put you on your toes as the suspense of the situations unfolded.
I absolutely loved the start of the book and AJ or Alex the rock star was SOOO good and hot as hell. Come to mama, oh yeah. His story was very good, 6 stars good and I wish this book was about him. I was at the start thinking this was going to be his love story but that seem to be in the next book and I can hardly wait to read that one. I know that will be right up my ally. I loved his background and the way his mind worked, he is a very interesting and likable character.
This book was set between 2 different stories that intertwined and meet up in the end. As I said, AJ story was my dream book sadly the other story was not. It started out good, but the more I got to know the persons in it I liked them less and less. They lied, cheated and I was not on board with their love story at all. The characters were well thought out and complex, they were more like real life ppl and did not follow the traditional book norm. They had flaws and a background and as it happens in real life you don’t get along with everyone.

I did love AJ story and I adored Sizzle, I think their book will be absolutely awesome.

Therefore give 3,5 stars rounding up to 4 as I absolutely loved Alex story line and the book was very well written.

I was given an ARC by the author for an honest review.

I'll start by saying that this isn't usually the type of novel I tend to pick up when looking for a new read. It's also the first book I've read by this author. I received this ARC from Sofia Grey in exchange for sharing my honest opinion, and I'm not sorry that I took the time to read it in its entirety.

It focuses on a rock band on one hand and a failing tech company on the other...it makes for an interesting read all-in-all, and is packed with romance and suspense, but keep in mind that this story it is told from many different POVs most of the way through the book. I look forward to reading future issues in this series, and can't wait to find out what happens to the characters next in this set.

Sofia Grey is another new to me author. Honestly, it took me a bit to get into this story, mostly because I kept getting confused with all the different characters and trying to figure out who was who and how they all were connected. The more I read, the more the mysteries began to unravel and then I couldn't put down. I HAD to finish it to find out the outcome of this complex cast! The plot is full of all kinds of twists and turns and suspense. There's also a lot of romantic relationships going on but the sex scenes are pretty tame. I want to continue with the series so I can read more about these flawed but somehow loveable characters! Told from four or five POVs with a happy ending. I received, read and voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This is a complicated story with many points of view that tie in to deliver a great read. You have an espionage story with an exciting investigation and plenty of action. You also have romantic relationships that are very complicated. This is a very interesting story. There are a lot of players though so at first it took me several chapters to separate who's who, with my one track mind. I probably should have read the synopsis which I normally don't do so I can have the surprise me effect. I had to skip around a bit though due to the cheating, even in my choice of reading material, I know it's fiction, it still rubs me the wrong way. It's still a heartfelt, entertaining and very intense story with characters dealing with their "real life" issues.

I was surprised by this book, don't judge a boring book cover, it hides a really great read. Sofia Grey has sucked me into a new world with the Lying in Shadows, it isn't a corporate spy book, it isn't a Rocker band boy book, it isn't an erotic romance. It isn't about cheating spouses. But it is all of the above. And it throws you into the mix seamlessly. It is a standalone novel, but I will be waiting on the next in the series to see where Event Horizion goes from here. I am caught up in the characters and want to see where life has taken them. Sign of a really good book, now where is that sequel???

Marianne (or Maz) is leading an audit for a tech company who are having data leaks, but also has feelings for her married boss. Marcus isn't happy in his marriage, or other aspects of his life, and feels like everything is failing. After more tech issues and threatening photos, this turns into a dangerous situation for everyone involved.

Alex (AJ) is the lead singer of a band who, after his brother's death, retreated to a private property to wallow. There he meets his neighbours (one who also worked for the tech company having issues), who are super friendly, and just the thing he needs to get back to his old self.

There are a lot of characters, and you read from a few different points of view, but they all come together and tie in to make an enjoyable read. Even though sometimes you wish you could tell them they're making a mistake and to think about what they're doing!

As I happened to read book 3 in this series before this one, I already knew which characters would end up together, but I enjoyed reading how they came together in this book. Now to read the next one!

Too many characters to keep up with.

Great Story that had good characters and relationships to make sense. The general story three relationships off romance mixed with a rock star became confusing. The antagonist in the story had no back story of physical contact with of us to make it understood. The story was good but misunderstood as a erotic romance.

Note: I received a free review copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I've made little secret in the past about how much I love Sofia Grey's Talisman series as well as the stand-alones that are set in the same world and involve some of the same characters. Thus I was fairly confident going into this one that I was going to love it just as much as I have all the others. We've met most of the main players here in previous books (and if you've read them you kind of have a few spoilers for some of what happens here), but there are a few new faces as well. Their stories here are engaging, and the writing is certainly up to Ms. Grey's usual standards, but something wasn't fully there for me with it as a whole. Perhaps I simply was deliberately staying disengaged from some of the characters because I knew from previous books generally how their story would play out, even if I didn't know the specifics. Or perhaps having to read it in bits and pieces over the course of several weeks as I have to read most things these days is to blame. Whatever the case, though it is definitely a solid 4 stars for me, perhaps pushing close to 4.5 stars even, there were a few things that were a bit off-putting for me.
