The Gods of Men #2

Temple of Sand

Rate this book
Sable has been exposed for who she is: Imari, the illegitimate daughter of Istraa’s king, and a Liagé—someone born with forbidden Shah power. After ten years of hiding and surviving in the bitter cold Wilds, she is finally returning home.

But it's not the homecoming Imari envisioned. After all, her father proclaimed her dead ten years ago, and with an anonymous Liagé leader operating in Istraa’s shadows, attacking villages and burning down temples, her father fears the people will blame Imari.

It could mean his throne, and her life.

Worse yet, the night Imari played her flute in Skyhold’s court, something unlocked inside of her, and now her power will not quiet. Neither will the growing fury she feels on behalf of Istraa’s Sol Velorian labor— people who share her blood.

As that fury becomes too loud to ignore, Imari chooses to use her position to liberate the Sol Velor. But can she free them without angering enemies hungry for the power she wields—a power that could rip the Five Provinces apart?

Barbara Kloss loves adventures, and finds them through reading, writing, trekking through the wilderness, and gaming—though she doesn't consider herself a gamer. She just happens to like video games. RPGs, specifically. She’s also a classically-trained pianist, and so you'll often fined music referenced in her stories.

Barbara studied biochemistry at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA, and worked for years as a clinical laboratory scientist. She was lured there by mental images of colorful bubbling liquids in glass beakers. She was deceived.

She currently lives in northern California, with her gorgeous husband, three babies, and cat, Mr. Darcy, who finds them all barely tolerable. Author of the award-winning Gaia’s Secret Series, and international bestseller, The Gods of Men.

The secret is out and Imari is on her way back to Istraa to face the music...

She’s certainly not expecting this homecoming to be a warm and celebratory affair, but things are worse than she could ever have imagined. A rebel leader is killing their way through the countryside causing chaos and bloody destruction, a terrifying example of the violence the Liagé are capable of unleashing. Fears grow by the day, each new attack leaving temples burned and people dead or missing. Blame could easily land on Imari, making it near impossible for her to reveal her true self. Whatever that may be. Her time in the Wilds has changed her, opening her eyes to the flaws in the world around her. The unfairness. The misery. The horror of Sol Velorian lives lived without hope or mercy. But if her banishment altered, then it also strengthened. Imari might have run before, but this time she has it all to fight for…

Just like Gods of Men, Temple of Sand is a cracking read. I’ve been trying to come up with the right way to describe it but honestly I’m struggling. It’s a prime example of the new breed of SFF writing that smashes through genre labels like the outmoded categories they are. What Barbara Kloss has done is helped herself to the best bits from multiple styles and used them all really, really well. Temple of Sand has the deep and multifaceted worldbuilding of fantasy, the pace and verve of UF, and the pure, exhilarating fun of a thriller. Yet the author never limits herself in her portrayals of the complexity of the human experience. You might think in a world where there are real villains, the lesser evils of everyday prejudice and racism might fade into the background. But that is never an option, each feeds into the other until the darkness threatens to overwhelm the light. Who is there to face this? Flawed characters with their own bad choices to negotiate and overcome. It's complicated and frequently surprising, filled with moments of real danger.

And yet, there is light and laughter here, especially in the relationship between Imari and Jeric. Their romance reminds me so much of the kind you get in the finest UF. For me, Illona Andrews does it best, but this has put Barbara Kloss in my top 3. She’s found that perfect mix of heat and banter. The characters have the sort of connection that has you wishing desperately for them to get together, but also kinda wanting to keep him/her all for yourself too. Jeric is SO FREAKING HOT. I mean, sure, he has a past. What’s a few hundred (thousand?) murders between friends. We’re all about his redemption anyway. Learn from your mistakes and grow, right? He’s on the correct side now. With his impressive everything and his sexy… confidence. No wonder Imari is all aflutter. But as with all the best heroines, she gives as good as she gets. Both characters are truly engaging and everything about them brings a huge smile to my face. I loved it all.

I read this cover to cover in one go and I’m already so desperate for the next book that I’ve put my order in direct with the author. It’s an incredible series that deserves more readers so take a chance. Then get in line behind me for what comes next.

The world-building in this novel is incredibly well done. Barbara Kloss has created a vivid and immersive world, filled with unique cultures, creatures, and magic systems. The desert setting is particularly well-realized, and the descriptions of the landscape and weather are vivid and evocative. The female protagonist is a strong and capable heroine; I liked her more than anything here, and the supporting cast is equally compelling.

That being said, there are a few major issues that prevent this book from being a 4- or 5-star read.

Firstly, the writing style can be a bit clunky at times, with awkward phrasing and dialogue that doesn't always flow smoothly, which was the same problem in the first book. Additionally, some of the characters feel underdeveloped, particularly the antagonist, who comes across as a bit one-dimensional and lacking in nuance. And I found the pacing of the novel to be a bit uneven. While the action sequences are exciting and well choreographed, there were some sections of the book that felt slow and dragged on a bit too long. The plot could have been a bit more tightly structured, as there were some loose threads that never quite felt resolved. The depiction of the romantic aspect in the book was rather unsatisfactory, as it seemed to lack depth and substance in its writing.

On the whole, this second book was decent, showing some improvement compared to the first installment. However, it was evident that a more thorough editing process could have greatly benefited the book's overall quality. Regrettably, the author failed to generate sufficient intrigue or fascination in me with this second book, leaving me with no desire to pursue the third installment.

Alors oui, c’est long parfois.

I loved the 1st book of this trilogy and well... I definitely loved the 2nd one too!!!! The story is exciting, I couldn't guess how it would end and so many details took sense page after page! Such a great construction of the story and I love the main characters! Now I have to read book 3... right now!

2023 re-read and my initial review still stands.

Gosh, Barbara Kloss, what kind of magical powers do you possess??!! This book! This.Book! Dare I say it's better (maybe??) than the first one? Everything about this book is phenomenal - from world-building to character growth (um, there is not a single character I dislike - even the "bad" guys! - because they're all so complex). I can't wait for the next book to come out. seriously.cannot.wait!

Mais c’était long.

I enjoyed it more than book 1 but it was not better.

If anything, it was slightly worse. It felt like book 1 was written with no real plan for a sequel, the whole thing a bit wobbly.

Very often, I would read something and think ‘ah, that’s not very on brand’ with either the character or situation.

SPOILER :

So Ventus is vanquished, the big bad guy and suddenly we make up a new one? Somehow bigger and badder? But in book 1, it didn’t feel… clear enough? The whole thing is wobbly indeed, I didn’t get that rush of ‘it’s amazing and so well crafted and carried out’. Because it simply isn’t.

And all of a sudden, Imari is a believer? She found faith under a rock or something idk.

Not a fan. And don’t get me started on this slow burn that isn’t really one because it’s, once again, not well written. Their whole romance is cringy, or so I felt.

This is only my opinion of course.

A masterclass in world building and tension

There is too much to say about this book. It is a masterclass of prose and world building and character development and holy cow the TENSION. Vivid descriptions sweep you into the story and the dynamic dialogue urges you to read faster and faster. Every beat, every chord is utter perfection.

I’m annoyed this series isn’t more popular! It deserves just as much internet hype as the Six of Crows and A Court of Thorns and Roses series get in the YA/New Adult community.

I was nervous I wasn’t going to love this sequel like I loved Gods of Men because in the years since reading Gods, I’ve read so much YA fantasy to the point that I’m kind of burnt out on it. Happily, that fear was unfounded.

This book is beautifully written. It’s one of those books that leaves you feeling a little discombobulated when you’re done because the book’s world just feels so real and sucks you in so completely that returning to the real world feels strange.

There are so many characters that I ended up having to make a list to remember who they all are, but everyone has a distinct voice. Blessedly, otherwise intelligent characters don’t make stupid decisions for the sake of plot convenience (which is one of my pet peeves). Imari and Jeric have a fantastic dynamic and the romance never overwhelms the other plot points in the story.

I have minor quibbles with the book that caused me to knock off half a star. There are two or three times some Christian terminology was used, which didn’t really make sense for a Middle Eastern inspired setting. I didn’t jot them all down but one example was when Imari mentioned something looking like the nave of a cathedral. Jeric’s personality also swings somewhat wildly in places. Sometimes he’s a charming playboy but most of the time he’s super competent and does have a kingly air. I wish Nia’s storyline was a bit more developed because I found her to be an intriguing character and an excellent addition to this world. It feels weird to say there wasn’t enough death but given how realistically developed the plot and the character decisions were for most of the book, many more characters should be dead given who they were captured by (trying to be vague here to avoid spoilers). Lastly, putting the epilogue aside, I thought the scene the author ended on was an odd choice of ending (as emotionally satisfying as it was). It would have made more sense to me to end on one of the bigger action moments earlier in the story. None of this at all dents my love of this book, it just kept it from being a perfect 5 star read for me personally.

I got halfway through the last battle scene in the book when I realized that there weren’t enough pages left to wrap up this story (causing me to let out an unholy screech), and lo and behold, turns out there’s a “to be continued” note on the last page. Why did I think this was a duology?! Who knows, but the fact that Goodreads doesn’t even have the third book listed yet makes me think I’m in for a long wait. Sigh, if you need me in the meantime, I’ll just be over here yelling into the void that everyone should read this series.

Oh how I’m loving all of these Kindle Unlimited finds. This is another great fantasy (with a large romance plot) series that I am without a doubt enjoying.

I love the way that religion was used in this story. The details were woven into the characters lives and it played a large part in decisions and actions. Combining the religious aspects with music was another great style choice. It was enchanting reading the way the musical tones were being conveyed. I like to think music can be soothing to us all (whatever genre/style we prefer!) and thought this was a great addition to the overall plot and story.

Ohhh how I wish Jeric and Imari found each other again sooner! I hate waiting until half the book is over for my love interests to be back on the same page. Once together, sparks started flying all over again. I LOVE these two. They have banter, and beautifully touching sentiments. Some heated moments (with a little steam) and I want them to end up together. Better get my happy ending in the next book!!

This story is very interesting and the plot feels like it’s always thickening. The villains are flat-out vile and appreciatively not one-dimensional. Temple of Sand combines dark aspects with hope and light to achieve a gorgeous book. I can’t wait to read the next one and definitely think you should take a chance on this!

Overall audience notes:
- New adult fantasy + romance
- Language: some strong
- Romance: heated make-outs; one mild open door scene
- Violence: gory/bloody; murder, demon possession, physical, creature attacks, magical attacks
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of loved ones, hints at past sexual assault

Bref on adore 🖤🖤

I highly anticipated this follow-up to The Gods of Men (one of SPFBO18's finalists) and it was a worthy wait. Barbara Kloss has quite a knack for storytelling, engaging characters, and solid writing.

The story picks up where Gods left off, with Imari back home and Jeric stepping in to fill the kingly role left behind by his brother. Imari is uncertain where she stands within her family, since it's been years since she's seen them last. And her reunion with them was entirely satisfying. All is not perfect, but I adored her relationship with her brother and father - something I was worried about - and the tension with her stepmother was a realistic addition to the story. Her stepmother's scorn and irritation was understandable, yet gave the right amount of realism to what would have actually happened if this story wasn't fiction. And that's what good stories do, right? They make you feel as if you really are engrossed in a real world, with real problems. And all is not roses and butterflies in Imari's return to the palace and her family.

Jeric's role as king came off a bit flat, since almost as soon as he steps into it, he dashes off again as soon as another opportunity presents itself. I wasn't convinced this would have been possible, or even allowed by his counselors, had this been real. Looming war and political pressure would have kept him there, in my opinion. But I understood from a plot perspective why this was the choice the author makes. And, of course, he and Imari NEEDED to be together. The inevitability had me anxious, and when it did finally happen... well, happy sigh. In typical Kloss fashion, the characters really shined and the romance was completely satisfying.

One of my favorite character developments were those of Nia (a new character to this book) and Tarryn, who plays a larger role in this book than the previous. And the comic relief of Braddok, Jeric's friend, and Jenya, Imari's bodyguard, provided an escape from the near constant, breathless action.

Which leads me to the plot. Temple of Sand delivers just as Gods did, although I didn't love it *quite* as much as the first book. I docked 1/2 star for this, since it seemed a bit simplistic. But this didn't detract from my overall enjoyment. As mentioned previously, the pacing is quick and I never got bored. The action is almost perfection, the monsters terrifying per usual, and I found I couldn't put it down.

Worldbuilding - ah, that elusive fantasy bedrock. Gods worldbuilding WAS perfection. This book, as opposed to the first one, takes place almost entirely within one city, which wasn't my favorite. So another 1/2 star was deducted. But sequels are notoriously hard to write, and although it wasn't my favorite, I did enjoy the layers of worldbuilding that this story added. The Sol Velorians in particular reminded me of the Jews in the New Testament - a disenfranchised people, enslaved, fighting for their freedom. I loved it.

I read an ARC of this book before the final editing pass. Any repetitive phrases will be cleaned up, I'm sure. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review; this is one series I will anticipate every new release.
