Sticky Fingers: The Complete Box Set Collection
36 Deliciously Twisted Short Stories
By: JT Lawrence
Narrated by: Roshina Ratnam, Bianca Flanders
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
I thought this book had quite the range of story genres! All short bites! There were a few 3 star reviews in there but most were 4 stars and some excellent 5 stars too! There is something for about everyone...but know they some have dark humor, or odd tales/endings, bizarre plots, and weird characters which make for delicious bite size treats!
The narration was done very well.

Whatever your idea of heaven is, mine is Sticky Fingers by JT Lawrence. As a professed hater of short stories, I was looking forward to typing how much I would have enjoyed these if only they'd been longer. But, darn it, I can't say it! Each story was exactly the perfect length, and I loved them. How does Ms Lawrence do it? Fabulous full novels and deliciously dark short stories. Every story is perfectly constructed, with credible characters and delightful dialogue. No stone remains unturned, the reader is taken to places and put in situations that are so cleverly constructed and compelling, I could feel my heart singing with joy at the genius of the ideas. The twists and turns of all these original concepts are inspired and I gave a standing ovation at the end. As always Roshina Ratnam provides award winning narration, ably assisted by Bianca Flanders. Fourteen hours and nineteen minutes of sheer, unadulterated bliss. JT Lawrence - I salute you!

I’m not one in favor of short stories but I was requested to review this box set audiobook.
What I do know is that a short story got to grab you from the very first beginning all the way to the last word, but what incredible about this audiobook is that every chapter is a new story and if you ask me how JT Lawrence the author does it I can’t explain, truly amazing!
Narration by Roshina Ratnam and by Bianca Flanders is spot on.

Amazing myself but I fully recommend this audiobook.

In exchange for an honest review I’ve received this audiobook.

I'm not an avid short story reader, mostly picking them up when an outside moves me. In the case of these books, the force is the author herself, JT Lawrence. She's one of my favorite writers and solidly in the "will always read" column. I was familiar with her style from her novels, especially the dystopian When Tomorrow Calls series and its spin off novellas, and was happy when she started giving us short stories to fill in the gap between novels.

The subtitle for these collection is "12 deliciously twisted short stories" and she delivers on that promise. As with any short story collection, the reader will click with some stories and not with others but it is a happy reader who finishes the collection feeling that the author has indeed tricked, twisted, and perhaps emotionally plucked the reader's perceptions. Cut to the chase, I love the stories in this collection.

One of the pleasures of a short story collection is that you can dip into it at any point and that is true with these collection. Howeverr, I will recommend that you read the collection in publication order. Why do I make this seemingly contradictory recommendation? First, you get to see how the author develops certain themes across the three collections. There are stories that are thematically related though not directly. It is fun to see how she can take the same theme and look at it from a different point. Second, there are several stories that directly cross between collections. The longest overlap between collections are the very humorous Trip Advisor stories. No spoilers but when you read the Trip Advisor story in Sticky Fingers 3 your going to go "hold on, wait a minute" and flip back to Sticky Fingers. There are also two sets of police detective procedual stories that feature the same detectives.

As far as recurring themes go, one of the most pervasive is that of a persons disturbed mental condition and ability to handle reality. Here you'll find reaction to trauma, multiple personalities, imposter syndrome. Some of these are very poignant. Several stories look at how a woman handles an unsatisfying marriage. Two stories consider reactions to South Africa after 1993 when apartheid fell. "Kakkerlak" (Sticky Fingers 2, #11) is a particularly bleak, Kafkaesque horror.

Some other stories outside of the ones I described above that I hope will get your interest:

Sticky Fingers

"Grey Magic" – about a modern, somewhat ditzy modern witch. Lawrence expanded it into a novel of the same name. Excellent novel.
"Escape" – was my WTF! story. It features a baby that thinks it was born in the wrong body.
"Pigeon Pair" – is a Hitchcockian bird story

Sticky Fingers 2

"Rockabye Baby" – a pregnant woman seeks help in a strange shelter, West Haven, which seems to have a sinister aspect
"Alpha Lyrae: A Robot Romance" – this story is expanded in volume 3 of the When Tororrow Calls series, What Have We Done. Of I wasn't already a fan of this series, this story would have pulled me in.

Sticky Fingers 3

"Every Breath You Take" a really, really disturbing look into the mind of a stalker.
"Lucky Strike" – what happens when you betray the wrong woman

"There's something about a kettle ..."
Sticky Fingers, the Complete Box Set, is is the bringing together of three individual previously published volumes of short stories by talented author, J.T.!awrence. Having previously read, and been impressed by, the first of the books in this series, I requested and was generously and freely gifted with a complimentary copy by the rights holder.

Book one is narrated by Bianca Flanders and it is a reading rather than a performance, with little variation given to different character definition. The timbre of her voice is pleasant and well paced, she reads, too, with apparent understanding and her pronunciation crystal sharp. However, her slight accent (South African?) sometimes left me uncertain of a given word, as in the story entitled The Itch which I initially believed was called The Etch, to my puzzlement. This mistake rapidly was corrected but there were other occasions where the meaning remained unresolved. But overall, hers was a good narration.
Books two and three have Rushina Ratman as the narrator. Sho shares the best qualities of Ms.Flander' reading but without the distracting accent, making each story a pleasure to hear.

Sticky Fingers is more than a collection of short stories. It is a coming together of a small group of individuals, each with some strange quirk which the author brings vividly to life for the reader. Not necessarily always likable, each is, however, interesting and well worth getting to know. It is a remarkable experience. The stories, although shorter than novellas, pack an imaginative charge which sometimes shock and sometimes inspire a more thoughtful consideration. Very few fail to impress. For this reader, one of the most terrifying was The Shelter, about a small group of people who, for twenty years, have hidden, below ground, from the ravages of war. Survival had radically reduced their life style, naturally, and they were dependent on help from the lone man who had aided them initially and continued to do so through the subsequent years, bringing comfort, food and news every month or so. Then suddenly he fails to arrive.
With each new tale, the author takes the reader inside the head of a character who is telling their own story, and occasionally there just might be another person already inside, as in the detective investigation, She Did It, another favourite. And not everything is as it first appears. Most are enjoyable, all very readable and strange but at the same time completely human and real, little tastes of the surprising unique individuality of people

Although the temptation is to listen to all of the books in just a few sittings, digestion is, of course, greatly improved if taken in bite sized pieces. And the shorter length of these varied and beautifully crafted stories means that they can be enjoyed at many different points in the day.
Recommended.

Review originally published at: https://www.lomeraniel.com/audiobookr...

I avoid short stories compilations like the plague, but I absolutely love J.T. Lawrence writing, so much that her stories trapped me in a way that I could stop listening to this audiobook.

This is a compilation of 36 short stories, which were originally published in 3 books. Some stories are recurrent, and we revisit the same characters in a different point of the story. There is quite a variety of genres mixed here: from epistolary to historical fiction, with some horror, fantasy, science-fiction, dystopian, and other stories that is difficult to frame under just one genre. Janita has achieved what no one has done before: keeping me on the edge of my seat for a complete book of short stories.

What I liked from these stories is that they are clever, imaginative, and many have a feminist touch, something that we don’t see a lot in literature. The stories are vivid, and there is an important sensory factor that brings it closer to the reader, making connecting with the characters easy, even when what we see sometimes is the ugly side of people, that side we all have, and that Janita likes to explore and crush us with it.

The first book is narrated by Bianca Flanders, while Rosina Ratnam narrates the second and third parts. Both women did a wonderful job transmitting the characters emotions and delivering a gripping narration. Janita’s book was already very good, but thanks to these narrations, it became excellent.

This is a must-read for J.T. Lawrence fans. I just can’t have enough of her stories!

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I have previously listened to book 1 and 2, so I got this set just for book 3. This is the ninth book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I’ve loved everything she’s written.

Some of these stories are downright funny- like the trip advisor story. This story is in three parts- one in each book. There’s an historically based one concerning the witch trials. Some are odd, or eerie, but not in an “open mic coffee shop” way, more like a Clive Barker/ Stephen King way. Some are real short, others longer. They are all different. They are thought provoking and some keep you guessing til the end.

This is the fifth book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Roshina Ratnam ) and I would listen to another. Her narration style and tone of her voice suits these stories. She adds to the stories (many are in the first person), and makes me feel like I’m actually listening to the characters telling their tales.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.
Please feel free to comment on whether you found my review helpful.

There is no doubt these are twisted some cute so really weird, creepy and unnerving. Some make you smile, why others make you roll your eyes, a few were like what the heck and others gave me the chills. It is a nice collection something for all the strange at heart.

The narrator did a good job pulling the reader in making you feel those chills. Somewhere really weird but you find yourself buying into the story as the narrator pulls you in. There are no background noises, no volume changes and no repeating of wording. Male and female voices are wonderful and fit the characters. Her deliverance was very good and holds your attention. I look forward to listening to more of her work.

There were some stories I really enjoyed others were ok. I felt a few were not complete but enjoyed them. All in all it was a very enjoyable listen with a few shocks, twists and turns that may blow your mind.

I am not usually a fan of short stories, but, having read and enjoyed JT Lawrence’s longer writing, I took a chance, and I’m pleased I did. This is a fabulous collection of bite-size writing that is a pleasure to dip into. I had this with me to while away the endless waiting that comes with school-age children. I think my favorite story (almost impossible to choose, but I was determined to) is Grey Magic. Full of witchcraft and fun, it lives up to its name. Raven Kane is a joy. The other stories are (almost) as good; for once in an anthology, I can’t think of a single one I was glad to finish.

Audiobook review

So worth every penny! The amount of stories & length of time in this means many hours of listening enjoyment.
The itch, eeek! Had me scratching!
The trip advisor stories, so funny & so clever, linked in such ways, well impressed!
A few linked to the full books written by this author that I’ve read or listened too, all impressive.
A full on twist and turn off great short tales. Enjoy

I was given this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review.

I had already listened to sticky fingers 1 & 2 and had intended to skip straight to book 3. I accidentally started the first story and remembered enjoying it so figured I’d listen again. Same with the next, and the next...

Volume 3 tied up a few loose ends and connections with 1&2 and yet managed to be fresh & new. I’m a big fan of short stories anyway and this didn’t disappoint.

I received this book for an honest review.

I had heard the first two already and they were good as I remember, the third one on the series was pretty cool, the stories were absolutely chilling and interesting.

The last one was my favorite, poor Traveling Slacks, he got what he bargain for, but he was as happy as ever.

if you like the compilations of little stories this one is for you.

I really enjoyed this book of “twisted “ short stories. I can honestly say that each of them was a unique gem. I sincerely hope the author plans to provide us with another volume of her delightful stories.

I had the audio version of the Complete Box Set – three volumes of Sticky Fingers, 36 stories in total.
I can’t remember when I enjoyed a collection of short stories that much – the stories are dark, funny, twisted and surprising, some are macabre, some are quirky, some are laugh out loud funny, some creepily crawl under your skin and stay there for a long while.
I really enjoyed the narration of the first 12 stories by Bianca Flanders, but if anything Roshina Ratnam took it a notch up for Volume 2 and 3, with a lovely South-African lilt in all the right places.
Whether you want to binge them all one after another, or listen two one at a time, you won’t be disappointed. JT Lawrence’s mind is an absolute treasure trove and I can’t wait to read more by this author!

This is an excellent collection of short stories. From mental illness to detective stories, book excerpts, trip advisor reviews and a personal account - Sticky Fingers has it all. Thought-provoking and well told, JT Lawrence delves into her characters' psyches with apparent ease, no matter their natures, and the end result is a rich tapestry of genuine, real-sounding people and situations. The mind-boggling, twisty psychologicak stories were my favorite.

This is a collection of 36 short stories that range from poignant to creepy to hilarious. The author touches on depression, suicide, theft, dystopian worlds, medieval tales of witchcraft and Vikings, and mental illness. I liked the way that there were certain themes/stories that carried through the 3 collections and the fact that the first tale tied into the last one.

Ms. Lawrence has a definite way with words that keeps you reading/listening. Her descriptions are wonderful and I found myself getting lost in these stories. It would be difficult to say which one was my favorite, but the Trip Advisor stories were great fun. You will find yourself laughing, crying, looking behind you and racing to finish to see how the stories end. Some of the stories were truly sad and will really give you a different perspective on life.

Reader beware: Ms. Lawrence does touch on some subjects that might be difficult for certain readers, so be advised. But, if you like your stories to have wonderful characters with a touch of darkness, give this collection a listen. You won't be disappointed.

Both of the narrators did a great job and added a lot to my enjoyment. They both set the mood of the stories perfectly. I was given the opportunity to listen to this collection by the author and chose to review it.

I purchased this collection through Audible and this collection is, hands down, the best investment of an Audible credit I've seen so far. Published originally as three separate books, the Sticky Fingers stories are funny, poignant, politically relevant and wildly entertaining. I don't think there's a bad story in the entire collection and my only regret is that now that I've been through them all, I won't ever have the pleasure of discovering them again for the first time.
