2017 has already given me two awesome 5 star reads!
Ms. Zanetti can write the heck out of some dystopian romance, folks. I was enthralled by this book. It captured and consistently held my attention. Though part of a series, it can be read as a standalone but to be frank, you'd be missing out on some great stories if you skip to this.
I didn't want to put Tace and Sami down. Tace is a seductive southern boy who is going through some interesting changes that include a darker side to his good ole boy personality. I liked him in the last book and he definitely caught my attention then, but boy did he have it now. There was something about him, this darker version of him, that really connected with Sami. Their fights? (/fans self) Who would've thought hand to hand combat could be hot as hell? Their chemistry was combustible. So. flipping. sexy. Sami was a sleeper for me. I vaguely remember her in the other books but she definitely shone a unique light upon this tale. This flawed pair were unique and complex. Each offering distinct value not only to one another but to the main plot.
The world building, imagery, and writing are spectacular. I feel vested in all these characters and committed to seeing the main storyline through.
Safety: Tace has been actively hooking up with two ladies in the camp. They break it off when Tace and Sami start to become more than fellow soldiers. They are all amicable and the ladies don't cause drama. There is no sharing. In fact, Tace is downright possessive and loyal after they get together. No rape or abuse.

Review @ Vanilla & Spice Books
I don't read many dystopian stories although I really find a post-apocalyptic world totally fascinating. I keep asking myself what I would do if I were stripped down to my basics and had to survive on instinct and good fortune. I'd like to think I'd be one of the good ones.
Before falling victim to Scorpius Tace was always the charmer, the easy-going guy with the boyish, Texan charm. When he got infected he didn't get his Vitamin B right away, which is the only thing avoiding becoming a Ripper, a zombie-like creature. Some of these Rippers are really only existing on instinct, the others become brilliant sociopaths. Tace has noticed change lately, his emotions are way toned down, parts of his body go numb, he blacks out. The only people tethering him to his human side are his friends at Vanguard, the vigilante group of people with Jax at the helm. One person owns his thoughts pretty much around the clock. Sami Steele.
Sami sees the darkness in Tace, the change, after he contracted the virus that killed the majority of mankind. She also is strongly attracted to the man who charmed all women with his good looks and easy smiles. When she is sent on a mission with Tace she is resolved to stay detached. She can't allow herself to fall for him, she would have to give up her secret if she did. And that would mean losing everything that means something to her. Tace and the family they have made at Vanguard.
Meanwhile, Jax is still looking for his brother and Lynne is working herself do death to find the bunker that is supposed to hold a cure for the virus. And as far as The Mercenaries are concerned it is still up in the air whether they are friend or foe.
Admittedly, I feel that the overall story arc could be moved forward a little bit faster now - there isn't much major development in that regard (except one thing but that would be a spoiler) in this installment and I feel a little bit stuck. I want to know where this is going and get a sense of why the world building needs to be dystopian, if you know what I mean.
Regarding the character development this author does a fabulous job to bring them to life for the reader. Tace is a dominant, moody, over-protective mofo despite his hampered feelings. Sometimes the charming Texan boy flashes through and you know it'll be alright. Along the way you can actually feel some of the old Tace coming back until he is a perfect mix of the dark guy and the pre-Scorpius Tace Justice.
Sami was a badass heroine with a soft heart. Her desire to be accepted and part of the Vanguard family is so strong that even under duress she'd rather expose herself than betray her new family. There is an unexpected gentleness and sweetness under the tough exterior that is very compelling and makes her an amazing heroine. I loved her.
There is a lot of steam between the main characters, the chemistry was lovely and Rebecca Zanetti sure knows how to write a HOT scene.
The camaraderie in these books is one of my favorite aspects. I loved how all men were horrified when faced with Sami's tears but all of them tried to awkwardly comfort her. And another zinger was this gem:
I really enjoy this series. Rebecca Zanetti's effortless writing keeps impressing me. She creates likable characters and while I think the story arc that spans all books could be moved along faster it still has me invested and I want to know how this will continue. Will the Vanguards and Mercenaries become allies? Will we learn more about Jax' brother? I can't wait for the next installment and I'm curious who it will be about!

No way was she getting involved with a brilliant bad boy who freely admitted he was about to go dark— especially since he was smart enough to figure out everything she was fighting so hard to keep hidden.

She sniffed again and nodded. “Yeah. Do I look like I’ve been crying?” “Yes. Your nose is all red and blotchy and kind of big all of a sudden.”

The aftermath of the apocalypse is when life will get interesting. —Dr. Frank X. Harmony, Philosophies
True. I've learned a few things about how things will be after the apocalypse through books:
1. We will all choose to dress in black and wear boots. In this book, they must have raided a Hot Topics in the mall because they are all dressing in cool vintage band t-shirts. I'm a little jealous. But, overall, the survivors of the apocalypse all dress like they are on some sort of emo sports team.
With my luck, I'd get with the group that only had a clown's costume shop to raid after the apocalypse. Sure, there would be plenty of knives, but the clothes! Ugh!
2. Only those with cool names will survive. In this book, we have Jax, Raze, Tace, Grey, Damon, and some of the girls have boy names like Sami and Vinnie. I have yet to meet a Marvin, Fred, or Herbert in the apocalypse. They must have died first.
That's cuz all the Bob's are dead.
3. Since we no longer have television or internet, we will spend our days "training" - which translates to beating the shit out of each other to make us stronger. Apparently, we will have better healing capacity after everyone else dies. This sounds like a plus to me. As it is, I cry when I stub my toe and I have mystery bruises occasionally that must somehow be sitting-around-reading related. I could use a little toughening up.
I might be able to take this guy.
4. Even though we can no longer bathe and must stink to high heaven, the survivors will apparently engage in a lot more sexual activity. Good thing they always seem to have a never-ending supply of condoms. Sure, they have little food and water, but condoms? Just grab a few from the bowl, dude!
As long as you name them Stone, Slayer, and Styxx.
5. Men will revert back into cavemen and women will find that super cute and sexy. Luckily, in this book our female is a soldier, but in the previous ones the women are all cute little things that need a big strong man to protect them.
I did, however, find the reaction of her fellow soldiers super funny when she actually broke down and cried about something:
“I kinda feel like you’re my little sister.”
At those words, those kind words, she lost her anger and burst into tears.
“Holy fuck no.” Jax backed away, shaking his hands. “Don’t do that. God, don’t do that.”
“You made her cry,” Damon snapped.
“I’m…not…crying,” she sobbed.
“Jesus.” Jax moved in and put both arms around her, patting her back like she was choking. Her ribs rattled. “It’s okay. Um, let it out.”
… “Make her stop crying, you asshole,” Damon growled.”
Nothing like girl tears to make the toughest guy in the room completely freak-out.
This book was the best one so far in the series. The world keeps getting better and better, and the characters are all really good. I like how we continue to see the interaction between the first couple, Jax and Lynn. Jax is a total sweetheart. The only negative is that the president and vice-president are getting almost cartoonish in their villainy at this point. They are like a pair of Bond villains with the power to survive ridiculous things. When they showed up in a helicopter like the Joker or something, I actually laughed out loud at the silliness. Even though the helicopter crashes, don't worry, they will be fine. They are basically like Wile E Coyote. You can blow them up, but these guys just won't die.

4 - "You don’t belong in darkness." Stars!
Rebecca Zanetti returns to Vanguard Territory and its people, with the third book in the Scorpius Syndrome Series. Tace Justice and Sami Steel are in the forefront this time, and it’s fair to say they have more than a few obstacles in their path to happiness.
I am a huge fan of Rebecca Zanetti’s writing (my reviews for this series, and everything else she has written attest to that) but I am going to be honest and say that this is a series that is on the verge of getting a little stale. To clarify my feelings as to why, is pretty simple, all three books that have released so far have pretty much run on the same pattern in that the first 75% or so is our couple fighting, fucking and gradually understanding that despite the Zombies and everything else that is going on they love each other.
"Someday you’re gonna be honest with me, darlin’. And it’s gonna be sooner rather than later…"
You get the odd inclusion of a little drama from other sources whether it be the Mercs, the President and his team, the Pure etc, but it has pretty much been the same pattern all the way through each book with very little movement in the story-arc. You then hit the last 25% and the action kicks in which skilfully pulls you back in again, which I would expect from an author of this calibre, but for me the plot has not moved along enough in the scheme of things.
"Now is all any of us has."
The scene has been well set, and the many and various characters introduced, now I really want to start seeing exactly what the author had in mind for the series story-wise start to develop at a faster pace in the future books.
Even now at his darkest, Justice was all about law and order.
If you have read the previous books in the series, and you really need to, to be able to understand what is going on here, you’ll know that Tace has only recently been infected with the Scorpius bacterium, having fought the fever and survived, he is balanced on a knife edge of possible sociopathy or returning back to somewhat normality. Sami, has been keeping secrets the whole time she has been a part of the Vanguard family, fearful of what will happen to her if anyone finds out, she keeps her attitude level dialled to full on belligerent with most of the guys, but for some reason she just can’t keep up the façade around Tace. Zanetti fans know the score, ballsy woman versus alpha male = Sparks, sex, a few fisticuffs, and occasionally the odd spanking for good measure. And this couple delivered on all of those expectations. Sami eventually ends up having to come clean about her past and the secrets is contains, especially when it looks like the knowledge she has been keeping to herself may be the only thing that can save those she loves. And this is when we hit the last 25% of the book and the action takes forefront.
Everything I expect to get from a book from this author was provided with Justice Ascending it wasn’t a bad read, and how everything has been left at the end once again leaves more questions than answers. That is good as it gives you more to think about, but I really hope we see more plot movement with the next book in the series. I cannot find any information about when the next book is due, but I am optimistic that the series will start Ascending!

Whilst Justice Ascending had its enjoyable moments, I have to be honest: three books into the Scorpious Syndrome series and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere fast. As with the first two books, we have romance, action, drama and plenty of crap being blown up, but generally I'm finding myself willing the overall storyline to lead somewhere quicker.
"The world doesn’t create darkness. I’ve found that true darkness, the real kind."
Tace didn’t manage to win me over quite as quick as I'd have liked but he grew on me as the story progressed. Brooding in nature, as expected he oozes alpha and he and Sami do have chemistry, however for a the first half of the book they failed to convince me that they were right for one another: as has been the case with previous couples, they have what I’d term a volatile relationship. That said Zanetti does inject the heat between them and you can't fault the sexy time.
But for all that I'm becoming somewhat bored and frustrated by the lack of development, after three books I’m still invested (or stubborn) enough to want to know how this series ends—that’s if there are plans for it to continue. Maybe it's me, maybe all this build up is leading to something that will wow, I really hope that's the case, because I know what Rebecca Zanetti is capable of, but I'm just not feeling that desperate need for more as I have when reading other continuing series' from her.

ABSOLUTELY SENSATIONAL!
This book is a wild ride from start to finish. Action, adventure, suspense, romance and drama with some laugh-out-loud moments, I was absolutely hooked from the first page and struggled to put it down. I loved every moment of it!

Sami became part of the gang when she introduced herself as ex-LAPD and was quickly recruited into protection duty. She has worked with Tace day in and day out, and though there has been ‘something’ simmering between them, neither of them have acted on it.
Now, Tace and Sami are sent on a mission to Mercenary territory, and their time away from Vanguard and a whole lot of alcohol proves the perfect excuse for them to finally open up to each other about everything that is between them.
Yep, Tace the sweetheart is now Tace the bad boy, and holy hell is he HOT! The man is all kinds of sexy, and amidst big action scenes and a whole lot of political scheming, he and Sami rock each other’s worlds, and it sparks something between them that neither of them are about to let go.
But their relationship is anything but easy. Their world is a bleak place and their lives are dangerous, and as if that isn’t bad enough, Tace’s side effects from the virus seem to be worsening by the day. He doesn’t know when or if he’ll lose his mind, or his life, to Scorpius. And for Sami, watching the man she deeply cares for deteriorating so quickly forces her to reveal a long-held secret that could save his life, but it could threaten everything that they have found together – and the very safety and security that she counts on to survive. And in the middle of it all, there is a brave and sassy girl trying to do the right thing and make amends, and a broken man who is coming to terms with who he is – and their beautiful, amazing love story.
It’s all absolutely epic, with the different elements of the story blending together to create a fantastic read that held me captivated from start to finish. I loved the continuation of previous storylines and the chance to catch up with previous characters - they are all involved in the everyday life of Tace and Sami, which means they're all a witness to the unfolding romantic drama, and Jax continues to rock my world…
… and I love the hints at new stories to come. The direction of this book will have a huge impact on where the series will go from here, and I can’t wait for more.

Tace Justice is in the inner circle of Vanguard. He has well as everyone else has suffered loss. But he was yet to be infected after beating the bacteria that killed nearly half of the population Tace didn’t get enough vitamin B to fit it. He feels as if he is descending into madness. Although he has always liked Sami and from the first moment he met her he has been smitten. But the gold old Texas boy? Would have stayed away.
Sami Steel part of the inner circle of Vanguard has found a home and a family. She is one of the best kick ass heroines that I have seen in a long time. But from day one she has lied by saying she was with the LAPD that is until her lies are soon to surface. Jax and all the others knows that she isn’t being entirely honest but they are too sure yet. Sami has many a hidden talent. Sami keeps on challenging Tace but the good old Texas boy is gone.
Watch out Sami cause

Sami and Tace have instant chemistry and I loved them together. But once they are off the good times start to role in. As a favor to the mercs, Tace goes up because he is a medic, although they want distance Sami still goes along to help scout out the enemy or maybe friends, who knows? They don’t really know at that time either. They have always skated the edge of their attraction.
“You’re wondering what it would be like. You and me- just once.” “Not even close.” His grin was full-on this time. “Liar”
But they just can’t where their feelings are going and sometimes survival just isn’t enough you have to have something worth fighting for.
Love and obsession are just different sides to the same coin. – Tace –
I always thought love would be sweetness and daisies… not the abyss and raw need. -Sami-
And with everything that is going on they decide to give it a try.
“It’s you and me, Sami. No matter what.”
Meanwhile Tace keeps on having episodes of numbness, tingling, dizziness and blacking out and it is getting worse. Until it is nearly too late but just in time Sami caves and tells the truth that there were some patients that have rejected the vitamin B concoction. They know where the bunker is and they are about to get their answers But to therer is more than one bunker.
While Sami spent time there it went from a computer center to an experimentation hellhole. There is an enzyme that can save Tace. Sami saves the day with her hacking skills.
My heart was beating a mile a minute there. So damn good but crazy. They attack the president for explosives. They’re fighting on all fronts and it’s getting tough.
I love the authors writing style. There is a great balance between the smexy, scorching moments, the story and continuing world building and whereas I love it all so much. There were some scenes were I really had to swallow that where really emotionally which I didn’t want to happen.
I have so many unanswered questions. There are so many possibilities that can come now.
Will Damon & April get a book? Will Moe & Grey get a book? What about the Pure Church? Just some of many. So many questions left unanswered with so many more books to come. I’m fishing here, so please answer me. The wait is killing me.

Four and a half from me
Third full length story ( although a prequel Scorpius Rising is available ) and what do you know it's just such a rush as the author explores the effects of bacteria that's extraterrestrial in origin. Having realised that following exposure to the Scorpius virus something changes in the brain what's left of humanity seems to constantly be at war with itself. Death may be the ultimate price but those changed are stronger, faster , often delusional and even homicidal. Insanity is griping survivors creating Rippers but the truly scary thing is when sociopaths cunningly walk amongst us.
Tace started out in this series as the Texan medic who came across as the sweet talking good old boy! Yet being infected by Scorpius has changed him irreparably. Feelings seem to be a thing of the past and now his growing obsessive behaviour needs an out. Well it just so happens that neatness and tap, tap, tapping doesn't quite cut it anymore and Tace finds his possessive nature is stuck on one person only and that's Sami!
Sami has been accepted by Vanguard as a trusted soldier but has secrets she cannot share. To them she's an ex LAPD cop but the truth is far more sinister. Sami has been aware of the blue eyed Texan but recently Tace is trying to push all her buttons! This lady doesn't fold easily and tapping out is not an option but when the two are sent on a mission in enemy territory all bets are off. One night and that's all they have but what if Tace wants more , what if he wants everything? Turns out Sami isn't the only one with a secret but Tace's one is deadly!
In a world were people seem all too easily to be turning into sociopathic killers it's also important to remember that some survivors do just that, they survive. So it makes sense to me that the author would come up with romantic heroes that are larger than life and pretty exceptional. I wasn't sure at first if Tace would measure up to the likes of Jax and Raze ( swoon !) from previous stories but his newer darker edge coupled with his army training made him a worthy leading man here. Add in Sami and the baggage she carries and the author gives a story that not only has romance but helps expand this reality she has created.
I'm not going to write anymore about the plot because frankly I'm pretty annoyed that the synopsis for this book gives so much away! Hey I don't mind the odd spoiler or a tease but please if something isn't revealed until almost the end why would the publisher do that? Ok rant over and this book does finish in such a way that you know there's many more fireworks to come . Enemies and new alliances , even a surprise discovery at the end and as usual a thrilling story oh and I must just say I'm loving the artwork on these covers!

Set in a post apocalyptic world where most of the population has been wiped out by the Scorpius bacterium, Justice Ascending is raw, gritty, adrenaline-filled and totally captivating. I am seriously hooked on this series! I loved every minute of Justice Ascending: it has it all - incredible world building, phenomenal writing, deep realistic characters, smoking hot romance, suspense, action, and a heart-stopping ending.
This book focuses on Tace and Sami, who have both been fast favourites of mine in this series, and boy did it deliver. Tace, a charming Texan cowboy, is hesitant to get involved with Sami as he is suffering one of the side-effects of surviving the Scorpius bacterium: his moral compass has vanished and his dark side is revealing itself. (I am seriously considering listening to the audio book just so that I can hear to his Texan drawl.)
Sami is a tough Vanguard soldier who is hiding a dark past which could jeopardise her place within Vanguard. Tace is tasked with working with Sami in order to ferret out her secrets, but he has difficulties fighting his attraction to her and remaining focused on his mission. What is she hiding and can he really trust her?
Besides the romance, the overall storyline deepens and we get to see more of the Mercs, including Damon and Greyson. Jax, the Vanguard leader, has to decide if he can trust the Mercs enough to work them so that he can access vital medical supplies and fight their mutual enemy, the president and his Elite Force.
I loved catching up with Jax, Vinnie, Raze, Lynne and rest of the gang and their witty interactions.
“I kinda feel like you’re my little sister.”
At those words, those kind words, she lost her anger and burst into tears.
“Holy fuck no.” Jax backed away, shaking his hands. “Don’t do that. God, don’t do that.”
“You made her cry,” Damon snapped.
“I’m…not…crying,” she sobbed.
“Jesus.” Jax moved in and put both arms around her, patting her back like she was choking. Her ribs rattled. “It’s okay. Um, let it out.”
… “Make her stop crying, you asshole,” Damon growled.”
“It’s okay, Sami. I’ll talk to Tace. If he doesn’t forgive you, we’ll just shoot him. I promise.”
This is my favourite book in the series so far, and I can’t wait for the next instalment in this superb series! This book can be read as a standalone, but I would highly recommend reading the previous books to gain maximum enjoyment and understanding of the characters and their world.

This is the third installment in the Scorpius Syndrome series and I would definitely recommend reading this series in order to fully understand the complex background of the protagonists and the workings of Rebecca Zanetti’s post-apocalyptic world.
This book focuses on the romance between Tace Justice, the once laid-back Texan medic who turned into a sociopath after surviving his infection with the Scorpius bacterium and Sami Steel, the Vanguard soldier with a past she keeps lying about. I was very curious about this pairing and Rebecca Zanetti didn’t disappoint. The revelation of Sami’s backstory illuminated some new aspects of the story that kept me glued to the pages.
I really enjoyed Tace and Sami’s story and I love this post-apocalyptic world, where you’re never quite sure if the person standing in front of you is your friend or foe, enemy or ally.
Another gritty, action-packed, dark and insanely hot addition to the series. Can’t wait to read book four!

I was very curious about this pairing and Rebecca Zanetti didn’t disappoint. The revelation of Sami’s backstory illuminated some new aspects of the story that kept me glued to the pages.
I really enjoyed Tace and Sami’s story and I love this post-apocalyptic world, where you’re never quite sure if the person standing in front of you is your friend or foe, enemy or ally.
Another gritty, action-packed, dark and insanely hot addition to the series. Can’t wait to read book four!

I really, really want to say that this been the best book in the series thus far. Really. I think it’s the combination of already knowing the Scorpius Syndrome world and having the back story of Trace Justice. I’ve been intrigued by him ever since he survived being infected by Scorpius. The sweet charmer from Texas has now begun to go dark, and the charismatic medic is no more. He’s more lethal, he’s more domineering, and he feels nothing. It’s a drastic change that impacts how he heals others, sees others, and deciphers intentions.
Justice Ascending also feels like a long epic read. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve missed this cast of characters or if Zanetti is transforming into a status of a truly gifted author; one who not only keeps producing fantastic works, but grows and extends herself to keep reaching for more each book she writes.

Justice Ascending is extremely tense, there are traitors in the midst of our heroes, and there is love, betrayal, hope and so much action it's impossible to sit still while reading!
The Scorpius Syndrome is one of my favorite dystopian series - it is really realistic in many ways, and even more so in Justice Ascending. There is a lot of tension, as different factions continue to fight, all the while trying to see if there is any cooperation possible. The president and his elite guard are lurking in the dark, at the outskirts, partly out of reach, but still able to meddle where they aren't wanted. Of course, some suspension of disbelief is needed, but the fact that there is love and hope actually makes it more realistic to me - not less. I think we are hardwired for hope, and so, seeing Jax, Raze, Tace and the others keep moving forward, protecting the people they love, and ultimately, seeing the light somewhere sends a really strong message.
Sami is one of the stronger female characters I've had the pleasure to get to know lately. Present and important in the prior installments, in Justice Ascending, she takes on a leading role, next to Tace. And their dance is filled with equal parts romance and violence. Both want the power, and neither wants to admit to anything. However, even with Sami's excellent fighting skills, Tace just might be stronger than her.
The overall plot of the series moves forward very nicely in Justice Ascending, and some loose ends are tied up, while others seem to keep unraveling. I really enjoyed that both Lynne and Vinnie are present and have important roles in the storyline, especially as the next novel has been neatly set up. (Please tell me there is a next novel being written?!?) The pace is extremely fast, and I have to admit that my heart-rate is still way up there, while I am thinking of possibilities and directions for these vanguards who need to build something strong to keep humanity going.
Written in third person point of view, focusing mostly on Sami and Tace, and in past tense, the action was really never-ending here. The way the story unfolded kept me in suspense, and I loved that even with some devastating moments, the characters were able to both grieve and stay strong all at the same time. Leaning on each other, and being strong for each other - again, a message of hope and strength that is important in a series that could easily become very bleak.
Tace sat back to watch crumbling buildings and deserted alleyways rush by. Nature had quickly begun to reclaim the earth, poking through concrete and climbing up brick. What was once a perfectly gray and concrete area was rapidly turning green again. Seemed like the earth always won the battle, didn't it?

I’m a fan of Rebecca Zanetti’s Scorpius Syndrome series and have been waiting for Justice Ascending for a while. I can’t seem to get enough of these uber-alpha heroes and the women that they are drawn to. These men aren’t for the faint of heart, they are bossy, in charge, and savagely brutal in getting what they want. It’s good the heroines can stand up to them. This is a series that to get the most out of it, it needs to be read in order otherwise, you may become a little lost.
Tace is the medic for The Vanguard, and I’ve loved him since we met him in the first book. Although he fits right in with the rest of the alpha-holes of the group, before he contracted the virus he was the laid-back voice of reason. His lazy Texas drawl along with his good looks and sexy smiles had many a woman wondering what it would be like to go there. Since he contracted the Scorpius virus, that’s completely changed. He’s controlling, dark, and the killing doesn’t seem to bother him a bit. He also seems to have acquired some OCD tendencies and he is becoming more and more obsessive about his partner and fellow soldier, Sami. Both being part of the inner circle of Vanguard, a relationship between them could have disastrous consequences for the group.
Sami is the kind of heroine I am all for. She’s smart, she’s tough, and she doesn’t take shit from anybody. Not only can she hold her own among all the alpha-holes, with her fighting skills she can kick most of their asses. She has secrets, though, and is not who they think she is. She’s holding back crucial information and if they find out the truth about her past she may just lose them all. She knows a relationship with Tace is impossible but she’s wanted him from the beginning.
The chemistry between these two is intense but when it combusts, hold onto your hats. Partnered together often, they found it hard to fight the pull especially when they were sparring. Foreplay for these two involved MMA style punching, kicking, and seeing who could come out on top and I found these scenes surprisingly HOT.
Things are heating up and getting more dangerous all the time. Suddenly enemies are becoming potential allies to fight an even worse evil, the President. Life or death decisions must be made meaning well-kept secrets are given up. Trust is broken, but understanding the why’s and how’s will go a long way towards forgiveness. For Sami, she may have to face her worst nightmare to save the man she’s grown so close to. For Tace, the question is whether the secrets were divulged in time to save him.
The action, chemistry, constant danger, hard-fought battles, and heartbreak had me riveted to this story. My only complaint is about the numerous near miraculous getaways of the super evil antagonist, Bret Atherton. He needs to go. I also wish we’d had an appearance by my favorite Scot, Deke, the leader of the Brigade and his woman, Nora. Since their prequel novella, I’m desperate to know what is happening with them. I’m crossing my fingers we’ll see them in the next installment. I’m hoping it has Greyson in it, he may just be the biggest alpha-hole of them all.

This is book 3 in the Scorpius Syndrome series and I highly recommend starting with book 1. While each book focuses on one couple, you have continuous characters in each of these books. If you are like me, the more books I read with the same characters the more I get invested and enjoy the series more as each book comes out.
If you are looking for just romance, you are not going to get that in this series. You are getting so much more. This is an action packed, romantic suspense about a deadly virus that has spread. Those who don't die from the virus have been changed in unpredictable ways.
I'm completely fascinated with this world the author has created and I'm enjoying the continuous evolving plot. It's unpredictable and you don't know who is going to survive from book to book. Each character is affected by the virus differently and I love that some of them are getting abilities that is almost like super powers. I'm looking forward to seeing where the author is going to take this series.

Introduction
Justice Ascending was a brilliant book and this one kept me on my toes all the way through. I absolutely adored this book so deeply and it just was everything that I could have hoped for and more. And I just couldn't put this down, I was flipping through the pages so quickly. Rebecca Zanetti definitely worked her magic in this angsty filled romance that just knocked me off my feet. Its definitely going to be a story that is edgy and packed with thrills but also delivers on deep emotion. There is something so well rounded about Rebecca Zanetti and her writing style. It just works so completely and she delivers on all fronts.

Tace Justice is part of the Vanguard warriors, but is also their medic. But he is also suffering as he recently recovering the Scorpious Bacterium but he is suffering from side affects and doesn't want to reveal the truth to anyone. But then he is called to action to work together with his nemesis of sorts...Sami Steel. Sami and Tace have gone after each other but now they are forced to work together, and sparks fly between them. But as they look to resolve the dangers surrounding them plus the truth of what the President could be hiding in the bunker, a fierce love will grow between them. But is their love fatal with Tace on the verge of dying...or will Sami be able to work her magic and save the man she loves before it's too late.
My Outlook
I absolutely ADORED this book so much! And wow Rebecca Zanetti really threw me a curveball with this one here. I just enjoyed the way that this author put this story together and delivered it in a way that just worked so well. And the angsty romance was just done right. I can be very picky about the whole enemies to lover's trope and not that they are full on enemies or anything, more like competing with each other and like to bicker ...a lot. And boy do they get entangled with each other. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them go at it and work through their desires for each other. They both were fighting what they were feeling for each other, and it was so wonderful to see this. And yeah, its gets pretty steamy in some scenes but its Zanetti so she just delivers on the steam so well!
The story line was so jam packed and the plot was well built. I do love that you could if you wanted to read this as a standalone (although I recommend these in order due to the world building) but that she doesn't overwhelm the reader with lots of world building either. It just has a nice balance to it. The way in which she builds the character growth is really fantastic. I was so charmed by both Tace and Sami. Once they worked through their issues it was so satisfying seeing what a great team they make together. I am so curious to see where the author is taking the serial plot and I have a feeling it's only going to get more intense. We do see the previous couples in this book and loved seeing them together and being in their HEA of sorts. And we also received some teasers for future books for future couples *crossing fingers*.
Overall View
Justice Ascending is a power packed romance that will leave you on the edge, its a story that will deliver on all the range of emotion and have you in the feels. Its intense, angsty, riveting and memorable!

This is the 3rd book in the Scorpius Syndrome.
I've been waiting for Sami and Tace's book!
The POV is 3rd person, but hovers alternately over Tace/Sami.
The writing felt a little stiff at first. After 15-20%, it really started to flow. The chemistry between Tace and Sami was very steamy. Tace, the Texas charmer has met match in Sami.

The strength in his hold stole her breath away. She lifted up her toes, heart galloping. "Let go" "I don't want to." Frustration curled his lip. "Believe me, letting go would be an out I'd take in an instant. But here's the rub, Samantha. Nothing in me, not one little atom or molecule wants to let go. Fuck. You're in my head all the time. in my chest, in my damn skin. I breathe you, damn it."
The first half of the book, Tace and Sami go on scouting missions and work to find a way to defeat the Elite forces (headed by the psychopathic president- !!) The Mercenary group "Mercs" were the Vanguard's foes in the previous 2 books. Jax, Tace and Raze and the rest realize they need allies that can provide more offense and of course defense for the Vanguards largely civilian group.
Sami is one kick ass heroine. There's one scene where she and Tace are wrestle/fighting/foreplay that is uh hmm HOT. The middle had NO slow parts for me. There was a little lull after that, but then really the story ramped up with a LOT of action at the end.
Tace was really battling for his life/Scorpius. He was running out of time.
Sami was hiding her true occupation and how it's revealed and the group's reaction was done really well. There's life and death and the struggle to save themselves and the (new) society. I enjoyed the bits of dry gallows humor (Not too much with the sarcastic humor IMO) . I was almost overwhelmed by the action near the end.
There was no epilogue. Sami and Tace. Ironically , a very romantic end of this book I really liked this couple.
I liked Greyson much better in this book. Damon was also a great secondary character.
4.5 stars ARC from NetGalley. *edit to add. This is pricey on kindle right now. I wonder if this is available at the library. Or wait for a price drop.

I enjoy most of Rebecca Zanetti books but I don't think this series is for me.
In my review I'm not going into the synopsis of the book as it's pretty clear on the blurb, just my thoughts why it didn't work for me.
I like the idea of what the author tried to project on this plot and storyline but I found the romance and world building almost in conflict with each other if that makes any sense. What came across for me was a mediocre romance that was flat and cheesy at times. We have the typical fights and then the sex. Trace was okay, but his reasons for his behavior just didn't really work for me, too typical or predictable. Sami's character I liked and you did feel for her and what she's gone through but again pretty predictable.
The pacing was good but as I alluded to earlier my main complaint is the conflict of romance and world building.. You're engrossed in the world building storyline and then it felt like a switch was made to the romance side and vice versa.
I think that I'll pass on future books in this series, it doesn't seem to work for me (could be just me). I'll continue to read other future books from this author though.

February 14, 2017I knew going in that the H/h know each other but don't start a romantic relationship until this book. I also knew he had sex regularly with other women while knowing the heroine. I thought I could look past it because I enjoyed the series so much, but I couldn't. At least not right now.
I might come back to this later when the next book comes out but DNF for now. Can't exactly skip this book completely since it'll have a lot of important information leading to the rest of the series =(

I love this series and I’ve liked Tace since the first book. Ever since he’s been infected and he didn’t get treatment in time, his personality has definitely changed, becoming a lot darker, more emotionless and he’s become quite a manwhore which made me hesitant in reading this book. But luckily my fears were unfounded because right from the start his attention was solely on Sami, he wasn’t interested in anyone else. His obsession with her was quite swoonworthy ;-) He was your typical Rebecca Zanetti alpha, which was sexy most of the time, although this author does like to make her heroes a little too OTT alpha at times for my liking. Luckily their adoration of their heroines makes me forgive them this.
How could he not see that he was every bit the hero he’d always been . . . just with a darker edge?
I really liked the tough Sami, who was quite feisty and a great fighter. I loved how she stood up to Tace, especially when he was being overbearing, and I also loved her kindness, which she tried to hide.

The romance was SCORCHING and I liked seeing these two fight at getting the upper hand. And when they finally stopped fighting their feelings the romance was so romantic and sexy!

The plot in this series is so damn intense and gripping! For two books now Vanguard has been searching for the missing Bunker, hoping it will give them answers into finding a cure for Scorpius, or finding a way to have their bodies produce the much needed Vitamin B on it’s own. Then there’s the mercs who Vanguard can’t decide whether they’re allies or enemies, especially after they kidnapped Raze’s sister and then helped them fight against the US president who is a crazy ripper and his Elite Force who wants to eliminate Vanguard. I really liked Greyson, the leader of the mercenaries and the chemistry between him and Maureen, Raze’s sister, is awesome!! I really hope their book is next.
I absolutely love the fantastic and detailed world-building in this series, and the sexy romance just makes it perfect. Highly recommended to all RS fans.

This series is really hitting its stride for me.
Tace Justice has been infected by the Scorpius bacterium and has gone from a good-natured, laid back Texan to a sociopath who feels nothing.
Sami Steel is a Vanguard soldier, she's told everyone she was a rookie with LAPD but some things don't add up. A vicious street fighter, she has been teaching Tace to fight hand-to-hand. She and Tace are partners but lately Tace has been feeling less than fraternal towards her. But he worries that post-infection his desires are too dark, too dangerous and increasingly violent - plus if they were more than friends they couldn't work together.
Tace and Sami's burgeoning romance is the backdrop to developments in the wider story arc. Vanguard and the Mercenaries are beginning to form a tentative truce, the President and Vice President are being wily (and possibly indestructible), the Elite Force are on the move and Vanguard is searching for the Bunker. The story is also more of a group ensemble with Jax, Blue, Vinnie and Raze all playing prominent roles. I think it is a testament to the strength of the series that I remember all of the characters without a stumble (in most series I struggle over a few characters that never really 'stick' in my mind without some kind of context).
If you like gritty, post-apocalyptic, military-special-ops romances this comes highly recommended.

I want to love this series, I really do. The dystopian background is really cool, and the wordbuilding has been pretty decent in the past. The problem is, the books are just love stories with a 'brave new world' backdrop. The romances are tepid, and the dystopia is just background filler...and wasted.
I don't know if the author even has an endgame in mind, other than to someday find the cure for the plague and the location of the rest of the mysterious bunkers. Other than that little bit of overarching plot, the books read like they are all written on the fly.
This is a romance author playing at UF. I truly wish it was the other way around - this series could have been great in more competent hands.

The Scorpius bacterium has decimated the human population - killing most while turning many into rabid "Rippers" and others into conscienceless sociopaths. Struggling with the changes wrought by his recent infection, Tate Justice, is no longer the caring and considerate cowboy he once was. Now the former army medic is dark and deadly, skirting the line between right and wrong. Fighting alongside Tate and the other Vanguard, Sami Steel, a former government hacker, conceals a dangerous secret that one revealed will destroy any hope of belonging that she harbors. Will she be able to sacrifice her own safety to save the one man who has come to mean everything?
Zanetti adds more layers to her well-developed post-apocalyptic world in this book as alliances are forged and new enemies emerge. The search for and discovery of The Bunker is the primary focus and the information revealed is very interesting and provides new directions for future installments.
Tate and Sami's friends-to-lovers romance is the weakest in the series so far. Their interactions in the previous books were minimal, and their relationship herein is based primarily on lust. Moreover, Tate's characterization as a manwhore does not endear him to the reader, and Sami's angst over her secret is overdone. Nevertheless, they do have good chemistry, and it is easy to root for the HEA.
In contrast, the rest of the cast is much more compelling. In addition to updates on Jax and Lynne (book #1) and Raze and Vinnie (book #2), there are intriguing hints at a potential connection between Greyson Storm, leader of Mercenaries, and Maureen Shadow (Raze's sister) as well as the introduction of two more couples who show promise.
In sum, although not the best romance, the world-building and ongoing action-packed plotline makes this series well worth the read.

Post-apocalyptic life continues in the Vanguard camp as people adjust to this new reality, but Sami Steele’s past is coming back to haunt her especially when Tace Justice’s infection by the Scorpius bacterium shows lingering effects that only she can help solve. But along with that, there are threats from frenemies, other enemies as well as the number of zombie/rippers that still prowl around the deserted streets. In addition, there’s an elusive bunker which Vanguard thinks of as ‘paradise’ which could contain the cure to the infection—but according to what Sami actually has experienced, they don’t know the half of it.
There is such toughness in Sami that would certainly draw admiration from the most jaded of readers: her backstory is finally revealed and I liked how deeply it ties into the deepening plot of this whole series even as she tries to outrun her past to find belonging in Vanguard. On the other hand, it was way harder to like Tace, even if Zanetti provides an acceptable reason for the way he has been behaving: either the infection has loosed the darkness that has always been lurking in him, or it has given him a side that simply permits him to be an arse to people and to women. Obsessive, suddenly over-protective with mood swings that would most probably classify him as bipolar or schizophrenic, I felt rather uncomfortable with the way these changes are acted out as he later takes some of those parts of him out on Sami sexually.
But as much as Tace seems to be someone completely different from the person he used to be, I couldn’t quite get a grasp on why he seemed to regain his sense of smell—the full effects of the bacterium aren’t made clear to us—or his emotional feelings only when he seems to be near Sami, even if we’re told that he has been fighting off his attraction to her for months yet going at it with other women in the meantime because he’s insatiable. Why the sudden, inexplicable acting on the attraction to her after his hook-ups with other women? Or is this merely spurred on by the secrets he knows she has been keeping? Not having answers to these questions made it consequently harder to fully buy into this pairing, let alone get invested into the declarations of love when I couldn’t see their connection past Tace’s darker needs and how he thinks Sami fulfils them.
Definitely not a standalone, ‘Justice Ascending’ jumps straight into the already-convoluted plot but ends feeling very much unfinished, as the multiple, diverging subplots still stay dangling rather loosely in front of us even as Tace and Sami cuddle into their HEA. I was engrossed in the breathless action, the widening scope of this ruined world that Rebecca Zanetti has created and the interplay of allies and enemies as battle-lines are drawn and redrawn, but less than thrilled by a lukewarm pairing that didn’t seem to have any impetus apart from a sudden, developing lust and other darker emotions that the plague apparently helped manifest. There isn’t any indication that this series is going to go on but with so many loose threads, it’d be a shame if it didn’t, given all the potential pairings and plot-lines that Zanetti has already developed in this one.

With Mercury Striking, book 1 of The Scorpius Syndrome series by Rebecca Zanetti making my best of 2016 list, and Shadow Rising a close second, it’s no surprise that I have been eagerly awaiting Justice Ascending. I’m happy to say that it lived up to all my expectations.
Tace Justice, a down-home Texas boy has left the innocence of the pre-Scorpius days behind him. Infected only a few weeks earlier with the Scorpius bacterium, he is one of the survivors, helped by a timely dose of Vitamin B. The infection has definitely changed him, though, the dark parts of his soul becoming much more prominent. As the medic for Vanguard, the small section of territory ruled by Jax Mercury in these post-apocalyptic days, he has a valuable part to play in the survival of their small group. But bouts of numbness and blackouts make him keenly aware that he’s not out of the woods yet.
Sami Steel is happy to have found a family of sorts with the Vanguard crew as one of their chief scouts and fighters. Her secret background as a computer hacker is safe – until Tace, her friend and a man she finds herself more and more attracted to, shows alarming symptoms. She knows the location of the bunker that Jax and his partner Lynn have been looking for but to reveal her secrets could mean the end of any trust she’s built with the people she thinks of as friends. As she and Tace grow closer, will she be willing to risk everything to keep him alive?
Fascinating world building, exciting action sequences, and super sexy scenes characterize this series and Justice Ascending has all that in spades. Tace and Sami are explosive together. Part of Tace’s infection symptoms include obsessive behavior, and more and more he finds that Sami is the focus of his every thought and action. His urge to keep her safe and protected wars with his knowledge that she is a capable and strong fighter. And she’s not afraid to turn that strength on him when required. The result is emotionally intense scenes as they fight their attraction to each other but ultimately lose the battle.
While Tace and Sami are growing closer, the suspenseful plot proceeds at a swift pace. Vanguard has an uneasy alliance of sorts with the Mercs, another group of survivors also fighting the fanatical American president (a sociopathic survivor of Scorpius) and his government forces. Inside Vanguard’s walls is a religious cult of ‘pure’ people who’ve never been infected with the bacterium, but whose leader’s suspicious behavior puts everyone on edge. The hunt is on for the bunker containing a possible cure for Scorpius. There are several scenes with secondary characters that give some clues as to who will be featured in upcoming stories. While we get an eventual happy ending for Tace and Sami, the fight to survive continues – and I can’t wait for the next chapter in the series!

What a ride? Just when I think understand the world and the disease Rebecca Zanetti throws me for a loop. Justice Ascending was an action packed edge of the seat type of read. I enjoyed going on this journey with Tace and Sami. The tension between them in the previous book exploded in this one. I quite enjoyed it.
I think the author did a good job of delicately balancing, giving answers while teasing of things to come. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action packed reads.

The race to the survival of the fittest goes on in Rebecca Zanetti's The Scorpius Syndrome Series. Since Scorpius Syndrome swept through the nation, only a few survived but Vanguard continues to thrive despite this chaos they live in. The search for the secret bunkers continues and for the first time, the cure to Scorpius may be a possibility.This series has become one of my favorite reads and always highly anticipated. The post-apocalyptic storyline is thought-provoking of what could be in our world. The testing for vaccines, studies, and its possible chaos intrigues me, as well as how realistic Zanetti makes the aftermath survival feel.
This installment focuses on Tace and Sami’s story. Tace has survived Scorpius but now experiencing symptoms that are getting worse. While Sami has a secret that is proving to be a big problem, not only in the mission to find the bunker but to what their relationship could be. It will be quite a battle before they can get their HEA.
Their overall romance was sweet with a little angst. Tace and Sami are not my favorite couple, but I love that they overcame the hardships. I love seeing the other characters from the previous books. I think Zanetti did a great job with keeping them in the loop with this story. After all, they are all pretty connected considering the world they live in. There is a big discovery at this end of this book and it looks like there will be big changes coming to Vanguard but I’m not sure how close they are to curing the deadly disease.
There were a few chapters parts that I thought was a bit cheesy but overall, I enjoyed reading this installment. Of course, Zanetti did not fail to include action-packed scenes that will have you at the edge of your seat.
