That soft, timid knock late at night. A hoarse mayday in the dark.

When you live in Marten’s Marina, your doorstep is an international shipping lane. So when a half-drowned refugee washes ashore, Eva Fairchild-Malloy and her neighbors scramble to the rescue.

Their castaway is fleeing—from something almost too terrifying to put into words. But the Promised Land isn’t really, not if she doesn’t have the right paperwork and the right connections.

While Eva and her detective husband, Vaughn, are just beginning their married life together, they’re also determined to help this desperate survivor hang on to her tenuous lifeline.

Can they untangle the web of nefarious fixers who work for other fixers—like an ugly, predatory food chain—before there’s a break in the links that plunges everyone they love into danger?

Because this dark underbelly of society will kill to avoid being exposed.

Jerusha Jones lives in a small town in the west end of the Columbia River Gorge. When she grows up, she fully intends to be a feisty old lady. In the meantime, she regularly maxes out her library's lending limit, has happily declared a truce with the clover in the lawn, but is fanatical about sealing up cracks in her old house, armed with a caulking gun. Due to the number of gaps she has yet to locate, however, she has also perfected her big spider shriek.

Jerusha loves wool socks, Pink Lady apples with crunchy peanut butter, scenery of breathtaking grandeur, and weather just cool enough to require a sweater, all of which are plentiful in the Pacific Northwest. She is eternally grateful to have escaped the corporate world with its relentless, mind-numbing meetings and now writes (or doodles or fantasizes or cogitates or stares out the window or whatever you want to call it) full time.

The mystery gets a little political with a refugee washing up next to Eva's MIL's houseboat. She jumped/was pushed overboard from a freighter she was being trafficked in They take the woman in, hide her and arrange to get some help for her.
Meanwhile Vaughn is involved in investigating the death of an employee of that ship. There is also a bank robbery case. Gangs are arranging for bank servers to be hacked in such away they can go to ATM's, put in a fake PIN and empty out people's accounts. They can clear out an ATM in a few minutes. They have been hitting small regional banks all over the area & one of the banks decides to hire Eva to do her spin magic on public perception.
The bank problem & human trafficking problem soon tie together as a familiar face reappears and Vaughn's mom is kidnapped.
Plus Eva hosts another supper on her houseboat and has to overcome an issue there as well I love Eva's food. I want to go to her supper club.
The usual cast of characters was there, plus Eva's Dad is now a regular. It was not as lighthearted as the others in the series but it had it's usual humor for the most part. I thought it handled the issue of undocumented asylum seekers decently for a cozy mystery. On the whole, very enjoyable

Rollicking interesting romp

I really enjoy these books. Eva is a compelling character - particularly when the plot keeps her moving and not spending too much time in her head. In this book the pace is madcap and driving. It keeps things fresh and interesting. The topic of human trafficking was interesting and sensitively done.

Very topical outing for Eva. A human trafficking case mixes harsh reality with the everyday life of the supper club and the marina, plus a few romantic twists. Well-told handling of a tough topic.

Author has yet to disappoint me

The flavor of this book is different from others in the series. But it deftly showcases a serious problem in today's world. Read it to see if you agree! I will always read Jerusha's books.

Jerusha's series

Are all great. I love every one of her books. This series is set at a marina near Portland with a great cast of characters. Her mysteries always meander to a happy ending. You should definitely check out this author whose excellent writing never fails to draw you into the story.
