An irresistible contemporary romance about a not-so-humble cop who splits his raffle ticket with an unlucky waitress and the actor who falls in love with her.
Allie Laurel Gray is unlucky in life and in love—and she’s okay with that. You can’t change destiny, right? But a chance meeting with Mark Dubois, the blockbuster actor with a cleft chin and kind heart, is like something out of a movie. Mark is everything Allie’s ever wanted and the exact kind of man she can’t have. Allie is going to have to take her destiny into her own hands to outwit her bad luck and finally win in love.
With that in mind, she's written over 200 novels full of fun and flirty characters who navigate the turbulent waters of romance with open hearts and creativity.

I started reading this novella, and when it sounded familiar I looked at other books by Lucy McConnell that I'd read. I discovered that I'd read this book 3 years ago, when it was part of the Magnolias and Moonshine series. This was It Could Happen to Us: Quotable Romance in that series. Now it's book #1 in The Trouble with Dating an Actor series.
Allie Gray doesn't ever win anything--she thinks she's unlucky in life and in love. Until a cop shares a for-charity raffle ticket with her. What did they win? Lunch with a famous Atlanta baseball player, two hunky actors, and a night at a luxury hotel. Because it's a shared the ticket there's only one hotel room, but because the cop is kind of a lewd jerk, Allie requests a separate hotel room.
At the all-star lunch Allie's sweet demeanor charms all three men, but definitely catches the eye of Mark DuBois. The attraction is mutual and sparks fly until Allie's luck runs out and the paparazzi get wind of their date and some pictures that don't tell the whole story.
If you can suspend belief and ignore the insta-love, this is a sweet, lighthearted, quick read which is great when you only have an hour or two and want a complete story. This is a clean romance with a few sweet kisses.
Ugh, the story was setting up to be very cute but the author cut to insta love and ruined an otherwise nice development of nice characters. So it's a real shame we don't get more on each potential story lines with the baseball player and his wife or even more on Mark and his daughter. Hey, take the time and write a full book!!!
This is a celebrity/poor sweet girl type of romance. Allie is a waitress, who is recovering from a nasty divorce where her ex racked up a ton of debt in her name. Two cops come in, the one comes onto her, but she’s not interested. He doesn’t have money for a tip, so offers to Venmo her. She tells him to donate to her favorite charity instead and he buys raffle tickets from it, and they end up winning a lunch with several celebrities that he takes her to. And that’s where she meets Mark, a top-notch actor in Hollywood.
This is a fluffy romance, super easy and fast to read. Not a whole lot of depth, but it hadn’t promised that either by its blurb and cover. It was an enjoyable read, but kind of over-the-top and far-fetched. Fall in love after one weekend type of romance. And two very different lives that just happen to work out without any hitches in the end. It wasn’t very well edited, which bugged me a ton. I’d probably rate it a 3.5, but will give it four stars because it was a fun, light read and deserved the estimating up rather than down with the stars.
This was a sweet, short read. It had some great characters and was a lot of fun. Great for a quick read with a cute romance. It felt a little bit rushed for me though. I had hoped that the relationship formed between Allie and Mark would be a bit more slow burn, but unfortunately turned into an Insta-love. So it disappointed me a little in that way. I also would have loved to see the relationships of the others around them too. Mark and Chloe would have been a great relationship to explore, and the friendship between Allie and Leticia would have added a great element.
This book was a cute quick read, but I had a couple issues. First and foremost being the title and cover image. Neither one matches the book. Second was all the typos. Mark was called Beau, when that is another character, and there were plenty more spelling errors. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine.
It started off really cute, Mark and Allie were getting to know each other, and then suddenly it was insta love after 24 hours. Um, no. I wish it was a full length novel, there would have been more time to stretch it out and let the story grow. It’s worth reading, but I wish there was more substance to the story.
If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all. This just about describes Allie Gray’s life – she works as a waitress in a cheap diner to pay off the debt her former husband left in her name. She works for a man who is quick to criticize and loves to deduct from her check anything that was actually the fault of her customers. Then one day a cop who considers himself a ladies’ man tells her he will give her tip to buy a ticket in a charity raffle for lunch with two movie stars and a baseball player. She doesn’t believe it, but her luck changed, or maybe not. This is a wonderful, feel good short novel that makes you want to see what Lucy McConnell will write next. Her characters are believable and the plot is interesting. You will find yourself rooting to the “little gal,” and cheering for Mark, the gorgeous actor who only wants someone who loves him for himself and not his money. It is well written, filled with funny situations, and will make you glad you chose to pick up this book. This book was supplied by the author. The opinions expressed are my own and the review is freely given.
Through a series of unexpected events, Allie gets to meet three celebrities for a common meal. Mark is one of them, and absolutely not what she expected a movie star to be. He is kind, selfless, and absolutely all she ever wished to find in a man. Unfortunately, they are from two different worlds, making a relationship between them impossible. Maybe there is a way… It was a great story in which inner beauty had more value than what the eye can see. The book would have been even better with less mistakes in it, which would have made it easier to follow the story line. The story in itself would have been worth five stars.
Editing was terrible. For example, the male main character had two buddies and the three names were sometimes mixed up, making things very confusing. Plot had a lot of holes and jumps. And an unforgiveable baseball mistake: the 7th inning stretch happens in the middle of the 7th inning, which is right after the VISITING team bats, not the home team.
There were a couple little positives. I like how religion was handled, for example, with the main female character going to church and being in charge of a kids choir, without sounding all sanctimonious the way Christian Romance often does.
An outta order prequel A sweet tale that is actually the story before the Cinderella proposal but it still works. The characters are introduced as if you know nothing about them. The stars of the story are more deeply defined than most of the supporting cast although there is some connection between them. Read this book immediately after finishing the Cinderella proposal and thought they were out of order but it didn’t wreck the story just made it a little less enjoyable since the ending was kind of already known thus the 4* rating.
I had a free copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Struggling waitress, Allie Gray is given half a lottery ticket by a local cop and when they win a lunch with actor Mark Dubois and an athlete. Mark has compassion on her and wants to make her life better because of the kind of person she is. When they fall in love, the media tries to make it something it’s not. An uplifting story about living out your faith and helping others.
Great characters, sweet story, too many typos. Allie is great! Selina/Selena/Seline (it's spelled all three ways) is pretty fantastic too as a single mom of a kiddo with autism. I love Leticia too! But, so many typos that I almost stopped in the beginning. Luckily, after the first few chapters there weren't as many to detract from the story! I loved the ending!
Cute clean romance. Definitely a bit unrealistic but a lot of fun. This one has a handful of editing errors.
Content: Clean Language: Clean Religious: This is a Christian book in that the characters go to church and have prayers, but I wouldn't consider this deeply religious.
This book was cute. I wish it had been drawn out more since I felt it was kind of insta love. Would have liked their relationship to develop more slowly. But I liked both Mark and Allie. I also thought the surrounding characters made the book fun. Overall a quick, fun read.
This story made me think of the 1994 movie “It Could Happen to You” with Nicholas Cage and Bridget Fonda. I really enjoyed that this was a nice clean story focusing on discovering/embracing a real and healthy relationship between two people with very different life circumstances. An enjoyable light read with a satisfying HFN at the end.
I enjoyed this book about a down on her luck waitress and a popular actor. I felt the impossibility of such a relationship, but loved how two good people who had been used before, just want to find someone who is real. It was great to see them be themselves. Lots of fun supporting characters is this fun read!
This was a fun book to read. It's short, sweet, clean, with a smattering of heartthrobbing moments. It's light on the faith element, but for such a short story focused on romance between the MCs, it might be harder to present that side in more detail. I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves short, sweet, contemporary romance.
A blockbuster proposal — Lucy McConnell 9/23-23 She is a waitress - and a guy she really does not like buys a raffle ticket for her tip - and he wins They go to the hotel — and it is one room. THERE IS NO WAY SHE GOING WITH HIM. She contacts the promoter and they agree to move her. AND then the star rescues her from the hotel. And . . . . read the book. You will really enjoy it.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Allie and Mark. Chloe was an extra bonus to the story as well. This story made me think I need to spend more time at the fabric store. This is a really sweet, clean romance.
3.5 stars Cute set up for the story. It was very much insta-love which isn't my fav but I liked the characters and it was a nice fluff romance. Could actually be the basis for a Hallmark movie.
Sex: minor character -creeper dude Language: no Violence: no
I enjoyed this rag to riches story of people who just wanted to have real life in their lives and not just the glitz and glamour of Hollywood filled with fake feelings, thoughts, and motivations. The humor throughout makes it a fun story to read.
Fantastic book. Short and sweet. Dingy restaurant that has waitresses with hearts of gold. Nasty police officer full of himself and some gorgeous hunks that have fun with all of them.
A lovely story of Allie , a waitress with a difficult life. Someone kind shares his raffle ticket and perhaps a chance at romance with someone else. A perfect beginning to a great series.
