I just love a good love story, don’t you? I especially love when the story takes place on “foreign soil.” It makes me feel like I’m vicariously broadening my horizons. Mette thoughtfully took international readers like me into consideration when writing a Note from the Author, located at the beginning of the book. She removed the need for me to look up measurement “translations,” but more importantly, I loved the glimpse into her imagination. While the sleepy town of Solvik may not have its own dot on a map, Mette made it real.
This story begins with a conundrum. Bettina, recently engaged and living in the city of Oslo with her young teenage daughter, has just inherited a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. After much contemplation, she makes her decision. A reader, such as myself, would think that with the choice made, things would fall into place and I’d get to sit back and watch as Bettina created her miracles. Well, I was partially correct, except I was watching as my stress level increased with every challenge she faced.
And I was beginning to crave snickerdoodles and chocolate chip cookies.
As the days passed, nearly everyone in Bettina’s circle was of the same opinion. I tried whispering advice into her ear, but her own thoughts were too loud and overpowering. I suppose that’s the way life should be. A person doesn’t like to be told what to do. Even if said person asks for advice, decisions cannot be made by others. As tough as it was to merely sit back and watch, Bettina had to decide, yet again, what would be best for her.
If you can’t tell, I completely loved reading this story. I have yet to take advantage of the bonus at the end of the book, but I do foresee many empty but yummy calories in my future.
I've read the first 2 books in the series, and each one gets better and better. Each book is centered around 2 characters, who turn up again in the next books. It's like meeting old friends! The author's descriptions of the fictional town of Solvik make you wish it was real, and I'd love to taste some of those pastries! This book deals with some tougher topics than the others, but the author has written about them in a sensitive way that doesn't detract from the story. These cozy romances are a delight to read, and I look forward to the next one.
Definitely a 5-star read! This is a captivating romance with just enough suspense and intrigue thrown in. I especially loved the evolving conflicted relationships. I have no criticisms of this story as I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and look forward to more from this author. Highly recommended!
Great read! Nice, quick dialogue and easy to read. New characters, but the same lovely background. The writer is progressing very well and has a unique ability to vividly describe different personalities and scenery, making you want to visit Solvik yourself.
The books in the Solvik Series are stand-alones, and I love the way the characters from the previous books are implemented - very clever! If you don't want to miss out on a good book, why not start with book #1? I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
I enjoy reading books about women who take chances and move on with their lives. Mette Barfelt accomplished this effectively with her main character, Bettina.
Mette's character's, setting, and cuisine descriptions pulled me in. Quite honestly, this is a difficult book to write a review about since I don't want it to be a spoiler. Although, I will say that I will be baking cookies soon, visiting my cranky aunt, and looking forward to meeting someone who will hopefully become a new friend.
This book is very well written, easy to follow and you don’t have to think very hard, which makes it ideal for bedtime reading. I enjoyed this book and will read more from this author. The down fall I found was it was a bit too predictable.
A good book in a good series. I'm enjoying reading about the characters of Solvik Norway and their stories and look forward to more books in the series.
Bettina and her fiance Preben are looking forward to their new life in a pretty, small town and planning their wedding when Preben's ex-wife turns up to stay! This was a charming romantic read that allowed the reader to get to know a variety of interesting characters along the way. Some unexpected turns of events were thrown into the mix making this a heart-warming and enjoyable romance.
I loved Time For New Beginnings! This is a story of a new life in a small town due to an inheritance. I was captivated by Bettina as she encountered the joys and sorrows of a life changed by circumstances. I highly recommend reading Time for New Beginnings.
This book starts with a funeral and just about ends with a funeral. There is a fiancee,' an ex, a child and a pregnancy. There are prospective in laws. Current extended family and used to be family. An interesting dynamic, but the ending is not expected.

The Good This is a very cozy sweet story about a family, inheritance, problem siblings and partners who love others. It is written in a very simplistic style.
The Bad This will appeal to the older generation who enjoy memoir style books. I felt that the story was too slow for my own taste.
The Ugly What an understanding protagonist and thank-God for Erik the Viking!
The older generation and those that love family tales will love it. 3 Stars
