കേരളവും ബോംബെയും പശ്ചാത്തലമായി വരുന്ന നോവലാണിത്. ബോംബെ നഗരത്തിലെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഇരുണ്ട വശങ്ങൾ, വർഗീയ കലാപം ഒക്കെ ഇവിടെ ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. തുടക്കത്തിൽ ഒരു പ്രേമകഥയായി തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് ജാതി മതങ്ങൾക്ക് അതീതമായ വ്യക്തിബന്ധങ്ങളെ വരച്ചുകാട്ടുന്നു. നഗരത്തിലെ വർഗീയ കലാപം ഉൾനാട്ടിൽ ജീവിച്ച ഒരു നിലാലംബരായ കുടുംബത്തിന് എങ്ങനെ ബാധിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നു.
