Book's name - Navarasa
Author's name - Vinaya Patil
Publisher - Half baked beans publishing
Pages - 98
My rating - 5/5

The book "Navarasa" is a collection of nine short stories describing nine rasas or emotions. There are nine beautiful tales relating to each rasa. I was hooked to the book from the very beginning. The first story was about the Shringara rasa that describes love, devotion, and beauty. It was a short love story - My love for you!

Other stories were equally good. Take off, the funny story made me roll on the floor laughing. Girl in the back seat, the horror one gave me chills. The turn in the events in that story was so good that it left me shocked. Author has done a really great job in writing stories in less number of words. Each and every story was written beautifully and the narration was good. Author has good storytelling skills and the way she has written the stories I can tell her writing style is gripping.

The cover of the book is cute and funny and really different and I like it. The title NAVARASA is appropriate for the book. There are only 98 pages in the book so, the short length of the book enables you to read it in one go. This book is an amalgamation of different genre so I will recommend it to everyone.

Navarasa or the Nine Rasas are Shringara, Hasya, Adbhuta, Veera, Shanta, Karuna, Raudra, Bhayanaka and Bhibathsa which relates to the emotions of Love, Joy, Wonder, Courage, Peace, Sadness, Anger, Horror and Disgust respectively. It is an interesting concept of presenting a collection of short stories where the author narrates the stories, each associated with a particular emotion or essence. Here, the reader meets different character, from a fantasizing taxi driver to a woman leaving in denial to a adventure loving Grandfather. Of course, no single sentiment or emotion exists on its own.
For instance, a story of love can have a hint of wonder and sadness or a humorous tale may have its equal share of horror. But each story had one of the above mentioned Rasa as a major factor; and, I loved this unique way of presenting a collection of short stories.
Each story had an exceptional narration by the author who is a true storyteller. I got lost in her simple and delicate stories of love and bravery and family. Although I do not enjoy the genre of romance, it was not difficult to get invested in the story of love and friendship. The author knows what a reader looks for and delivers accordingly. Navarasa has become a part of my best short story collections.

I absolutely love the Cover Art as it accurately describes the book’s title and overall concept and is simple, contemporary and fun in style. Different stories calls for numerous characters but there was no alikeness; each character had its own unique personality and voice.

Coming to the stories within, although I liked all the stories, two of the stories I absolutely enjoyed were “Take Off” and “A Wash Away Story”. Also, my favourite characters are from these stories itself. I could totally relate with Manasi and her dislike towards obnoxious and stubborn kids. The pair of Nandu and Pappu was hilarious and endearing. I rolled in laughter by the last act of this pair in “A Wash Away Story”. Truly, luck can change anytime!

Being an avid reader of mystery and horror, I found the ghost story predictable and yet was enthralled by the whole writing style. I will be looking forward to any other story of the paranormal by this author as she recounts the setting beautifully, gripping the readers with her tales.
Short and sweet, Navarasa contains all the essence - of love and hate, of wonder and horror, of drama and humour. At times witty and funny and at other times gripping and endearing, I thoroughly enjoyed this potpourri. I believe that it is a suitable light read for any reader looking for a collection of short stories.

Starting from the cover of the book is simple and yet beautiful with nine different rasa emoji in red color background. The title of the book “Navarasa” Nava – nine and Rasa – emotions means nine emotions.

The book is a collection of short stories based on nine navarasa. The nine emotions included in Navarasa are:-

Shringara (love, devotion, beauty)
Hasya (Joy, humor, sarcasm)
Adbutha (wonder, mystery, curiosity),
Veera (courage, confidence, pride),
Shanta (peace, relaxation, calmness)
Karuna (sadness, compassion, pity),
Raudra (anger, irritation, violence),
Bhayanaka (Horror, anxiety, worry),
Bhibathsa (disgust, depression, self-pity)
These are the emotions that humans show according to the situations. My love for you, Take Off, In the eyes of wonder, A Knock at the door, the damned bridge, Nancy’s Haven, A wash away story, girl in the back seat, when I wake up are some short stories author had penned down based on these emotions. Every page is loaded with emotions and twists.

Grandpa Henry from Nancy’s Heaven was my favorite character in the book. Take Off! It’s one of the funniest stories in the book. The protagonist Manasi dislikes kids and hate flying. Manasi colleague Arunima inivited her to celebrate New Year Eve Party at Chennai. Aravind (Arunima’s brother) is also coming from US to attend the party so Manasi decides to use the opportunity to meet him. She had a crush on him. Arunima requests Manasi to take her darling daughter Shaina with her in the plane. Shaina was very naughty. The plane and airport journey in the book was amusing.

Language is simple and lucid to read and connect with the story and being engaged throughout the story. The style of narration and the pace are perfect. The author has portrayed each and every character with utmost significance of their own and every one of them has done justice to their respective roles throughout the story.

Looking forward to read more works by the author.

I’ll recommend this book to all readers.

What is Navrasa ? Nav means 9 and rasa which is originated from sanskrit word 'Ras' means essence but here it is used in the sense of 'emotional state'.

The nine rasas are: shringara (erotic love), karuna (compassion), adbhuta (awe, wonderment), shant (peace, equanimity), hasya (laughter, mirth), veer (valour, heroism), bhaya (fear), vibhatsa (disgust) and raudra (anger, fury).

These nine rasas were the backbone of Indian aesthetics ever since they were codified in the Natyasastra which is the dance scripture of India. And these rasas formed the premise from which traditions of dance, music, theatre, art and literature evolved.

Evoking the Rasas in the audience was the prime motivation of the artist in their art performances, and the author of this book has tried to evoke the same through her stories.

So This book is not an insight into the history of these rasas, instead its a collection of 9 short stories where each story depicts each of these rasas. Its a very interesting and thoughtful concept, and I must admit that I really enjoyed reading this book.

First of all, its not at all a heavy read. The language of the stories are very easy and relatable. They are all modern, realistic tales. The grammar is on point, proof reading done well. And the book is almost of 100 pages which makes it a one sitting book. Infact this is one such book which either you can finish in one go or you can savour your reading experience by reading one story a day. Either way you are gonna have a wonfderful experience.

The book is also aesthetically appealing. The cover is in red and white combination, On the front cover there are 9 emojis of each Rasa which I really liked. Instead of using any other traditional picture of emotions, she chose to use these emojis which I am sure in this era of facebook watsapp, we all must have seen or used all of them, which again makes it relatable to the reader.

If the fonts of this book would have been more spaced out, big and of sharp black color, it have have been more pleasurable to read. But nonetheless, the stories are superb.
There is a beautiful love story which will give you that butterflies in your stomach kind of feeling. There is a spine chilling horror story, There are stories about adventure, anger, humor. You name is you have it. This is a small power packed book or as we say in hindi, this is a chota packet bada dhamaka kind of book. Definitely Go for it :)

Showcasing the double-sided nature of one's inherent sentiments, Vinaya Patil has come forth with a collection of short stories depicting the essence of every emotion experienced by a person.

Raw and intuitive in its approach, the book is focused on 'Rasas', the nine repositories of emotion. Before every story is a short tale acting as a precursor to offering the reader different perspectives of the same emotion.

Ingeniously crafted, it is a profound way for a reader to understand the essence of emotion before diving deep into the lengthier story.

While there are tales for nine Rasas, or Navrasa, namely, Shringara, Hasya, Adbhuta, Veera, Shanta, Karuna, Raudra, Bhayanaka and Bhibathsa, by far my favourite is Nancy's Haven a story about Karuna- Sadness, Compassion and Pity.

The story revolves around a well respected, old Tea estate owner, who has a larger than life presence and never-ending love for his village and it's residents. What is so amazing about the story is its inbuilt duality and contrast against its own mini-story.

Although the mini-story is about a mother teaching her child the significance of compassion and doing good for others, the actual story proceeds to do the exact opposite where the son and the grandson of the old man refused to recognise his good actions and even grew estranged because of it.

Every story progresses in such a manner displaying the numerous angles to every narrative. The more a character is dependent on a single emotion, the deeper he finds him encompassed by it.

A lot of the stories focus on forced marriages or the repression of an individual's wants, almost as if a character's true colours could only be seen once left in a desperate frenzy.

Unique and unputdownable Navarasa is the kind of book that provides only necessary details about the characters and their situation, leaving the reader desperately longing for more.

Astoundingly inventive and explorative, Navarasa is a collection of short stories focused on the reader's innate range of emotions and its ability to harness their actions.

From the attention-grabbing book cover to the mini-stories at the start of every main story, the book has rightly ticked every box on its way into the hearts of its readers.

The book leaves no stone unturned in the pursuit of its goal to analyse a person's emotions while undergoing unexpected situations.

The writing is outstandingly engaging. The reader cannot just peruse one story and put the book down, it beckons to be binged upon.

As evident in her debut novel, the writer is a lover of romance and the connections that originate from it. Many of the stories explore the underlying concept, despite it not being that mean theme. This only goes on to reiterate that love plays a major part in our lives and also the emotions that come with it.

The book drives home the point of how heavily we depend on emotions in our life. In nine effortlessly influential short stories, the author builds the ideal premise to examine some of the most ardent and intense responses of a character in a particular setting.

With a wide variety of characters, author Vinaya Patil has managed to strategically place eighteen different plots in nine Rasas all wildly different from the other but creating the perfect fit in this 98-page book.

There is a very everyday quality to it. The book served a reminder to me that we come across the nava rasas in our everyday life. Even though at times life seems to be predominant of one mood. The stories are light and refreshing. Although I usually don't enjoy short stories much, this one turned out to be a good read. Full review on raimuniya.blogspot.com

From the butterflies you feel in your stomach when you fall in love to the spine chilling horror, this book has it all. Denials, acceptance, adventure, anger, humour, you will experience the different flavours when you read the nine (nava) rasa stories. A love story on kindle, a boy full of wonder, an adventurous and brave brother, an iron cored girl with goals, a loving Grandpa and a story around his tea estate, a haughty landlord, a taxi ride and a woman's struggle make up for a wide variety of reading.
The book introduces the navarasas or the nine emotions of a person and there is a story associated with each rasa. For each rasa, there is a short story for a few lines followed by a longer one. Most of the stories were unique and heart-warming. I really enjoyed the versatile perspective of the author. There were one or two stories that I did not enjoy. A few more corrections need to be done in terms of grammar and spelling. It was very interesting to see how each rasa was incorporated into the story. A few stories have unpredictable endings which I really liked. The cover page is attractive and well-designed. Overall, it is a quick read. If you love short stories, then you will surely enjoy this book.
