“It was always going to be you.” “How can I be this lonely when I know so many people?”
Levi Meadows feels adrift in the modern world, where friendships are shallow and connections are fleeting. He has five hundred Facebook friends but feels utterly alone. Finally, he gets some good luck: his old best friend is moving back into town, and Levi takes him up on an offer to go hiking and get away from it all. He's looking forward to the trip, as long as the crush he had on Marcus back in the day stays buried.
“Let's get away from it all. Together.”
Recently dumped by his long-term girlfriend, Marcus Townsend is struggling to readjust to single life. He needs to get out into nature, to lick his wounds and recover. A two-day hike with his old college friend Levi is just what he needs. But when a horrible accident befalls them on the trail, Marcus finds himself depending on Levi for more than just friendship.
“You're going to be okay. I've got you. Just stay with me.”
Levi will do anything to get Marcus home safe. And Marcus had no idea just how much Levi cared. But once they get home, how are they ever going to deal with the feelings that surfaced on the trail? Was it a moment of weakness or a glimpse of something deeper?
Lean on ME is a steamy, standalone gay romance novel with a HEA and no cliffhangers.
Sierra Riley was born and raised in a small town where she spent all her time reading under trees before she moved to the Bay area to pursue her own love story.
She writes the kinds of books she loves to read: rollercoaster rides with happily-ever-afters. She's rarely at a loss for ideas, and credits her wonderfully supportive friends with helping her stories actually make it onto the page, as well as her husband and kids for giving her the chance to follow her dreams.
When Sierra isn't busy writing, she enjoys knitting, traveling, listening to the Pet Shop Boys, or just curling up with her dogs and cats and devouring a good book.
Yes, I am making up words. This word flitted through my brain the entire read and stayed even after I finished.
This isn’t a negative description, it is just how I would classify this book, or well, not classify it. I am hard pressed to throw it into the romance category. It may have kind of ended up there but the majority of the book just wasn’t.
I am not really sure what kind of book it is honestly. Based on the authors note to us I would just have to call it a book for her, one for healing and gratitude.
This was a story of two friends who had drifted apart due to real life and recently reconnected. It was also kind of a survival type story. But again, it was not a romance. I don’t even know if it read like an awakening. I think I thought that is what was going to happen honestly but how could either of them really think about anything except surviving? And if they did and it went there, well, I’d have probably been screaming “not the right time”, lol! So yeah, the setting and the situation was kind of the romance books downfall. There was just too much real life and no room for there to even be a chance for romance.
Once there was though, well, I don’t know if I really felt it. By the end I did but getting there just kind of seemed a bit emotionless or one dimensional. Maybe flat. Unmoving? I don’t know how to explain it but I just didn’t feel a spark of any kind.
I liked the end and I’m happy for them, I just am unsure of how they got there.
Levi had a secret crush on his straight roommate in college. Marcus got into a long term term relationship that lasted 7 years. When that relationship was suddenly over, Marcus moved back to his home town and caught up with his old college friend.
On a weekend hike in the mountains, Marcus gets hurt and Levi has to step up and help his friend safely back off the mountain and later recuperate from the accident.
Levi lets his old crush surface and makes tentative moves towards Marcus who seems open to the idea of more with Levi.
I enjoyed the story and the sweet friendship between the guys. They were good together. I'm not sure how much I bought into the romance part of it because Marcus had always been straight and there was no hint that he was finding himself attracted to men or even to Levi in particular. Marcus just seemed to let whatever was happening happen without much thought. In fact he showed more emotion about Levi helping him while he was healing than he did about all of a sudden finding himself sexually involved with his old time friend.
Overall a great story about friendship and second chances.
GFY is one of my favorite tropes, probably because it's one of the first I read and really, there's just something about a seemingly straight man falling for another man. I love the process, the realization that things are changing.
It makes perfect sense to me that most of these books need to be slow-burns, seeing as you can't just wake up one day straight and then suddenly realize you might not be as straight the next one, it wouldn't be realistic. That said, when reading these kind of books, I need some development, like seeing how the straight guy's feelings are evolving or that he's starting to notice things about the other one that he hadn't before.
Unfortunately, at least until the 54% mark where Levi finally kissed Marcus the first time, we barely had anything of that sort. The author gave us a whole treaty on camping, hiking and what not to do while doing those, and while it could come in handy to some, frankly I was bored out of my mind with all the detail. I'm not an outdoors person, so yeah, I don't see me needing any of that info anytime soon. I completely understand that Levi and Marcus needed to reconnect after so many years of being apart, but I didn't really see any evidence that Marcus had ever thought about Levi like that before Levi mentioned he'd been attracted to Marcus back when they were roommates in college. And then, after they kissed, it wasn't mentioned again until later in the story and then instead of giving us a glimpse of them together, the story jumps two months into the future. This didn't help make me connect to them as a couple or root for them.
So, yeah, while the book is well-written, it definitely wasn't for me. Maybe others might enjoy it, though, so give it a try and decide for yourselves.

After being away from her computer due to personal issues, Sierra Riley is back with her first book. Lean on Me is a friends to lovers trope that rekindles friendship and opens the door to love.
"He'd get Marcus out of the forest safely or die trying." ~Levi
Rekindling their friendship following a breakup was something Marcus had no idea he needed. Friends since college, he held Levi in a different realm. The younger man had been his college roommate, but they were as different as night and day. When they had drifted apart, the days became years and slowly the lines of communication severed.
For Levi, life seemed to be passing him by. But he knew having Marcus back would resurface all those long buried feelings that he'd spent so many years buried. Now stuck in the woods on a camping trip, Levi must find a way to bring his injured friend to safety and figure out what the underlying static is between them. After all, the very straight Marcus was fresh out of a relationship and there was no way his friend could want him. Right?
Find out how the story unfolds.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.
Sierra Riley is back after a long absence, and I'm glad to see her back.
Levi and Marcus have been friends for a long time but drifted apart. When Marcus breaks up with his girlfriend, he comes back to town. Levi and Marcus decide to go camping. Their friendship is still strong, but Levi is a little conflicted because he has had a crush on Marcus. Communication is lacking from the start as Marcus never mentions his break up, and the relationship is a bit odd and not fully developed in the story because so much of the story was about the adventure and injury rather than the romance. I couldn't quite buy the two of them getting together in the middle of a crisis with no real conversation about how they got there. Something was a little lacking for me, and I had a hard time believing we would go from Marcus never having any feelings for Levi (or guys in general) to HEA in a quick time frame.
I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC provided by the author
A dramatic journey from friends to lovers for Levi & Marcus. The reasonI love books is because I’m can totally immerse myself in the characters, in the story. I say this because I was totally invested in this story. I was stress by the unfortunate situations, even though I knew the story had a HEA ending. To me that a good tale! I liked the characters, the slow build up from friends to lovers. I really enjoyed this book!
Lean on Me (ARC) was graciously provided to me by the author for an honest review.
"Love and Creamsicles"
There are so many reasons why I loved my most recent read, Lean on Me, by, Sierra Riley. I was first drawn to this book, let's face it, by the cover, along with that which was already known about the storyline. I'm such a stickler for ones which have copious amounts of time in nature, in which avid outdoor enthusiasts are able to take part in a plethora of activities. Having encountered a story with writing that enabled me to enjoy such adventures right along with the characters was an added bonus. I love stories like that, so, as soon as I discovered the details of this particular book, I found myself seemingly putting on my own hiking boots and packing my own gear in order to become involved with a great story with an exciting plot. I could not wait to begin reading Lean on Me. And, I am so glad that I did.
Lean on Me is a story about survival. It's a story about perseverance as one attempts to determine the right way(s) of achieving that much-desired goal. It's about sacrifice for the better of someone else. It's about finding happiness and the ability to be able to take that next step in life. I loved the two mc's, Levi and Marcus, and found that they were written in such a way that enabled me to sink right into their development and drive and wanted only the best for them. I found them to be extremely realistic as well as beautifully described, thereby enabling that initial connection with them to be made right off the bat. As this story overflows with vast amounts of details pertaining to hiking and the outdoors, it was easy to become emotionally involved with the struggles of both Levi and Marcus. I enjoyed becoming immersed within their lengthy inner dialogues, as they made their way up and down the smooth and bumpy trails of nature, in more ways than one. Despite having to sit on the edge-of-my-seat on more than one occasion. But, it's a trade off, so, I'll take it.
I loved the storyline. I found it to be very well-rounded with many different opportunities for cyber-hugs, laughter, tears, actual cheering, and, that final admission of having stubs for nails due to all of the nail-biting moments having been reached. The plot was one that was not only heart-warming, but was also one in which contained gripping and down-right scary moments as well. While its pace was a bit slow, at times, it was welcoming to be able to become one with nature with the two nature enthusiasts, as well as be able to see the development of their relationship. That being said, however, I also needed more. As this is a gfy story, which I absolutely adore, there are many different kinds of thoughts and emotions which come along with that. I needed to see those types of thought processes from actually both of the characters. I also needed to see the actual development of the relationship, in order to strengthen that needed connection with both of the mc's. Having that ultimate strong connection to not only the characters but also to the relationship, would have been a positive affect to the slightly confusing moments which appear, at various times, throughout the story.
Despite there being few secondary characters, those that did exist were well-written and contributed nicely to the story. And, even though there was sparse character background, that which did exist had a positive benefit towards the story as a whole as well. Regardless of the need for more depth, development, and the existence of some typos, the descriptive writing was stunning, enabling this story to become one which was a thoroughly enjoyable read as a whole.
I absolutely loved Lean on Me, and, found its storyline of dedication, sacrifice, devotion and love to be one in which will definitely bring me back to re-read this story all over again. I loved Levi and Marcus, and, found their admired devotion to be something that has the ability to unearth even the deepest of feelings, that once revealed will be the cause of the utmost of teary-eyed confessions.
With all of the beautiful, exciting and nail-biting moments, I loved being taken along on this cyber-hike, which was a definite feast for the senses, and loved just as much all of the introspection of Levi and Marcus, as their journey yielded such revealing and tender honesty, that enabled these two men, who were at a stumbled cross-roads, to be able to finally take that next step towards their own brightly lit path towards happiness. I loved it....:)
I am a big fan Friends to Lovers romances. Thus, I was excited to read Lean on Me.
Levi and Marcus were roommates back in college. Since then they have lost touch. But, when Marcus is dumped by his girlfriend, he asks Levi to join him for some camping. Unfortunately, things go wrong during the trip and Marcus is injured. During the resulting ordeal, Marcus discovers his feelings for Levi have changed.
Marcus has never considered kissing another man before, but there's just something about Levi now. Marcus knows everything with Levi is different because of their friendship.
Once they get out of the woods, things are still tough. Neither knows when they will even have time to talk about their kiss or to kiss again. Meanwhile, Marcus has to focus on getting well.
I enjoy the way in which their romance evolves. It just feels so natural. And as good friends, their shared history just makes everything seem so right.
One of my favorite scenes is when Marcus starts to realize how easy it is to talk to Levi. He just never realized that he never had that with his girlfriend. He admits that with his girlfriend, he had to try to impress her. It has always been much easier for him to be vulnerable with Lexi and talk to him about anything.
Lean on Me is a sweet romance. It is one that keeps you interested the whole time.
Levi likes helping people, but Facebook friends aren’t enough. Marcus has been left by his longtime girlfriend because he didn’t give her enough, and he has difficulty expressing his feelings.
On a weekend hiking trip, Marcus is hurt, making Levi have to step up to get them help, and causing their friendship to bloom in a new direction.
Their close connection for so long makes it easy to add a new layer to their relationship, but it still takes awhile for Marcus to be able to talk about things. For Levi, it’s a dream come true, and he wants to be there to take care of his love and his best friend.
Interesting to note the author had some health issues, so it explains the dearth of novels for awhile and the theme of this one. Glad she’s back.
An okay read about friends reuniting and becoming lovers after a shared dramatic incident while hiking. I enjoyed reading the camaraderie between Levi and Marcus and seeing their relationship blossom from just being friends to something more.
This is a slow burn romance and the heat level for this is pretty low. I wished there had been a bit more background for both characters and the story wasn't so focused just on the interaction between Levi and Marcus in the present. There are no secondary characters so readers don't get to see Marcus and Levi interact with other characters.
An ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
While I was reading there seemed to be a few Australianisms that seemed out of place (especially in a Sierra Riley who never wrote Aussie before). Of course I didn't mark them or remember any specifics damn it. And Levi was called Eli a few times. Other than that it was just okay. The chemistry could have been better, Levi seemed more into it than Marcus. Marcus's break-up from Justine was still really fresh and I felt, even with their history and Levi's nursing Marcus's injury, that they rushed things a bit. He and Justine had been together nearly 10 years I think? It was really quick, even though he'd known Levi longer.
A cute, simple, friends-to-lovers story. Low angst, nice characters that are not as developed as much as I expected but considering that the book isn't very long and the plot develops fairly quick on some parts and really slow on others, it's ok overall. Low angst and with not many issues except for the restraints both Levi and Marcus show instead of doing what they should... you know, talk and get things clear once and for all. I didn't see a real
All in all, it is nice but one I won't suffer from a book hangover.
This is a sweet story but the pace is really slow until the last quarter of the book. Marcus and Levi are great characters and I love that they have so much history together but this book has a lot of potential that was never realized. We see their relationship develop and deepen while they are trying to get to safety and afterwards when Marcus is recovering in the hospital and at home then the book jumps ahead to them being a couple. I want more about their relationship after they get rescued and a lot more background information too.
Great new read for me. Levi and Marcus are two characters you're going to love from the start. This is a fun, romantic and sweet friends-to-lovers story. Levi is a "alone in a room full of people" type person and is excited to see his friend/crust come home. Marcus just wants to start over and get back to himself. With a bad accident comes a good chance at happiness. Can't wait for the next. I voluntarily reviewed an 'Advance Author’s Copy' of this book.
A great cute & sweet friends to lovers story. It's a very enjoyable read with wonderful main characters, Levi and Marcus, who were roommates back in college. After Marcus is dumped by his girlfriend, he asks Levi to go with him camping. Levi always had feelings for Marcus, but now Mrcus is starting to have feelings for Levi! I like that it's a slow build and it's great that they have their friendship as a strong foundation. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
I did really enjoy this story. The characters were vivid and great. The chemistry between them was amazing and the hiking/injury was for the most part believable. Two issues I had though: why did Marcus and his girlfriend break up? I felt like I needed that backstory but didn’t get it. And the GFY in this was almost too unbelievable. I get the appeal of that trope and I don’t usually struggle with it but with this one I did. But still, the bulk of this was so good it overrode my hesitations.
This was a cute story. I love friends to lovers and this one was a sweet one. Overall I would read more by this author since I did enjoy the way the author writes.
This was an okay. Fairly simple and straightforward story. The main characters - felt like something was missing. Not sure what that was but this was not a story I was truly invested in!
