I just finished my major edits on this book, and I'm going to read it through one more time, and then I'll be looking for a last round of beta readers!!!! If you're interested, send me a message or comment below. I am specifically looking for people who (a) will be focusing on grammar and spelling and such and (b) people with enough extra time on their hands to get it proofread fairly quickly (my goal for having my part done is the end of February, hopefully sooner, and goal for publishing is very early April or late March). If this sounds like you, let me know! I'll be able to give more details after I finish my last read-through.

So in case you missed the update a few days ago... I FINISHED LIGHTPORTER!!!!!! *throws confetti* *offers cookie* *bakes cake*

I'm planning a post with more details to be coming soon, but for now, you can sign up for the cover reveal on my blog here (there should also be a blurb reveal during the cover reveal, too, and if you sign up, you'll get to read it early...), and comment below with what you're most excited for!

Reread and I ADORE THIS BOOK. THAT IS ALL. Even better than the first one. Still need the sequel!

Reread September 2019

I LOVE IT SO MUCH (it's even more fun on a reread, especially reading aloud) AND I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOWWWWW!

Original Review (2018)

(Review also posted on my book blog, here.)

Featuring superheroes with unique abilities, mysterious plots, and laugh-aloud humor, Lightporter is sheer fun. It’s a blast following the telepathic twin heroines and the rest of the agents at IDIA, as they face new threats—and secrets among themselves. A fun, thrilling read!

I’ve been looking forward to this book ever since reading Twinepathy, the first in the series. Lightporter was so much fun! In many ways it improved on several things from the first book, especially since all the beginning/setup is behind the characters and we can settle into the adventures. :D

There were a bunch of mysteries which kept me curious and flipping pages, and I can’t wait for more books in the series to find out more about the hints that were teased at, about... well... things. ;) (Like Blaze! And a certain new character who seems really cool and I can’t wait to find out more about him. :D) Essentially, these books feel like a really awesome superhero TV show and I love it.

It’s fast-paced and exciting, and I enjoyed getting to go a little further into this world of superheroes. Speaking of which, the superpowers are so cool and fascinating! I would love to be able to teleport like Blaze, or move a remote (and other things, of course) with my mind like Maddie. I also liked that we got a bit more about the twins’ telepathy in this one. :) So cool! And the other abilities were super neat! The story also travels all around the world, which was so fun.

Really my only complaint is that some of it rushed by a little quickly and it was over a little suddenly—like I said, kind of like a TV show, waiting for the next installment. ;) Which isn’t bad, exactly; I just was a little surprised it was over so quickly and left quite a few things hanging, and just—I want MORE! Heehee. :D

My favorite things, besides the cool superpowers, was the humor—which had me grinning or laughing several times—and the characters! I’ve become super attached to them (no pun intended) and I loved getting to read more about them. ^_^

Albany has grown quite a bit and I like her so much more! I don’t even mind that it’s in first-person-present-tense. :) Brooklyn is still sweet, but we see more of her unexpectedly solid side too. Jen/Data is fabulous as always—it takes a strong personality to run a superhero agency and she’s definitely got it! :D I liked getting some more of Keller too—she’s still a grouchy, tough cookie, and I like her. XD Speaking of cookies: we get more Anvil! I was extremely pleased about this. :D Anvil is one of my faaaavorites! ^_^ The intimidating guy who also bakes cookies, I loved seeing more of him in this, as Data’s right-hand man, and also his nice side occasionally. ;) And then Blaze! I loved how he takes center stage just a little more in this, with a lot of the questions revolving around him... so I won’t say more about that, but I love Blaze! Even though he was a little grumpy sometimes, I still love his banter and humor and essential Blaze-ish-ness. :D

Anyway, between everybody (especially more Anvil and Blaze!) I was SUPER happy with all the character stuff going on in this! There are tons of little tidbits hinted at, which only make me more desperate for another book... even though this one JUST came out. Heehee. Anyway, I’m hooked and I love these precious characters at IDIA! ^_^ *hugs them all*

There were also a couple of new characters, who are very interesting... Spoiler guy: OOH! :D Ember: Iiinteresting... Singe: AAAHH! :D And some others. ;) You’ll just have to meet them yourself!

Overall, I definitely recommend checking out this series! If you want a fun, fast-past, clean YA contemporary read with superpowers, this is the place to find it. You should probably start with Twinepathy since you might feel a little confused jumping in on this one, but know that it’s totally worth it and that there’s another awesome book awaiting you after Twinepathy! And if you’ve already read that one... well, what are you waiting for? Lightporter is waiting, and it’s AWESOME. :D

I received a free ARC of this book from the author (thanks!) and was not required to write a positive review. These opinions are entirely my own.
Favorite Quotes

My version of walking quietly is like a little kid banging pans together compared to Anvil’s silent steps. Good grief.

***

“I want you back here. Immediately. No stopping for food.” She pauses. “But since I know you will anyway, I’d like a chocolate milkshake.”

Blaze gives her a weak grin.

***

Jen is sitting behind her desk, as usual, and she looks up, surprised.

“What are you four doing here so early?” she asks, frowning.

“Time zones,” Blaze informs her.

Jen rolls her eyes. “Again, Blaze? Sorry, girls.”

***

Blaze disappears. A second later, he reappears, but he hits his elbow on the table and yelps.

“Did you move that table?” he asks Anvil suspiciously.

I swear Anvil’s hiding a grin. “What have we told you about teleporting in here?”

Blaze sighs. “But walking’s so… tiring!”

“Drama queen,” Anvil mutters so quietly that I almost don’t catch it. “Here.” He gives Brooklyn, Maddie, and Blaze boxes. “Blaze, take them to Jen’s room, the tiring way.”

***

“What would be the worst that could happen?”

I frown. “Jen would be mad at you.” That’s one of the scariest things I can think of.

***

“You really should stop heating up doorknobs. It’s not good for them.”

***

“We’re officially going to die!” Ember yells. “Just so you guys know! And I blame you!”

I've been looking forward to reading this book since finishing "Twinepathy" over a year ago (how's it been that long, by the way? I thought it was just a few months ago??) and "Lightporter" did not disappoint.

In the first book, you could tell that Blaze was the epitome of a mysterious character who has many secrets. Well, we didn't learn a ton of info in this book, but we did learn enough that has me content.

I really like the uniqueness of all the characters' different personalities and their sarcasm and banter back and forth. I literally laughed out loud so many times while reading this book and truly enjoyed it.

In person, the physical book looks small, but it’s actually 180 pages and it finishes what the back cover talks about, so I think it was a really good length. Even though, of course, I’d like it to be longer, it was satisfactory and has me so eager to read the next book. So eager. Not to be an unmannered five-year-old or anything but *gimme gimme hands* 🥺

No Christian content at all, but it was super clean. Because it isn't technically a Christian book, I will not be reviewing this series on BFCG, but I will share the little bit of content below. But this was probably one of the cleanest books I've ever read while still having some action, just like the first book. Major props to the author.

Content:
- A mention of David and Goliath.
- Sarcasm & Eye rolling; Words like 'dang it', 'darn;, 'duh', 'dumb', idiot', a cut-off 'oh my--', 'shut up', and 'stupid' are used; Monsters/Large (reptile-like) Creatures (not ugly or gruesome) & Fighting/Killing them (barely-above-not-detailed); Pain, Injuries, & Almost drowning (up to semi-detailed); Guns are aimed at people (including Albany) & mentions of Guns and gunshots; Mentions of a bank robbery & stealing; Mentions of teens being kidnapped by villains; Mentions of an explosion & fires; Mentions of betrayal & traitors; Mentions of lies & lying; Mentions of throwing up; A few mentions of threats; A few mentions of nightmares; A couple mentions of car brands; A mention of Elvis.
- Mentions of dating, exes, & a brother’s girlfriend; Mentions of jealousy; A couple mentions of a cute boy & a blush.

A good superhero novel is hard to find. Thankfully, the search ends here.

Though the second in C.B. Cook's IDIA series, Lightporter brilliantly avoids the dreaded Second Book Syndrome. This is partially due to an increase in writing quality and partially due to Albany's character development. While she still makes mistakes, she behaves with much greater maturity and much less stubbornness, which means I liked her better.

Though still told from Albany's perspective, a fair portion of the book centers around Blaze- which is just fine with me! He remains one of my favorite characters, even if he's a bit out of sorts for a while. We also learn a little more about Anvil, one of my other favorite characters, and he plays a pretty big role here. (On a side note: can I have a cookie-baking party with him and Blaze and the twins and Maddie and Jen? Because that sounds super fun, and I want to try his cinnamon chip cookies.) In addition, we encounter a few other new faces, both friendly and unfriendly, which I very much enjoyed. (One character in particular got me very excited, even if I was wrong in the end about his true identity.) Everyone, new and old, gets their moment of glory one way or another.

Plotwise, the book is pretty solid. It's not non-stop action, but things never stop happening long enough for me to get bored. FOE continues to make trouble, though it's definitely our friends the IDIA crew driving the plot. We learn more about FOE and their plans, just enough to raise the stakes and make us worried. And the ending is highly satisfying.

Lightporter is not perfect. Action scenes and transitions sometimes feel less smooth than they could. Dialogue occasionally seems a bit off. But overall, it's a fun, clean superhero adventure and a fabulous continuation of the series.

Aw, guys!! <3 This book is pure awesomeness! (Though does it beat Twinepathy??) It totally kicks second-book blues!

First off, I used this pic in my review for the first book, and I am using it here because it is just as applicable.

If any of you have read my review for Twinepathy (or have chatted with me via clicky keyboards), then you should know that I ADORE Blaze. (no, you don't seem to fully understand the deepness of this) He is everything. BUT. Lightporter is a lot about him. Without delving into spoilers, he isn't his usually light-and-witty self, but rather kinda snappish. TELL ME YOUR SECRETS, BLAZE.

We go deeper into FOE - the EEEEVIL organization - and IDIA a lil' bit. Much approved. A bit more about Jen. So yas.

As was the first book, the characters are everything. <3

Albany is still, like, my twin. She is super impulsive and loves action and is slightly jealous because of circumstances surrounding Blaze?? YES.
Blaze: Really temperamental and short, but still IS THAT A SLIVER OF OLD BLAZE IN THERE?! I think that it was spotted! Seriously, though. We also find out a bit about his background. Mwahahaa.
Ember: She's a new character, and, um, I'm not sure how I feel about her?? she knows what she wants and she's cool?? But?? Stay away from Blaze? So yeah, I liked her, but not. Yeah, that totally makes sense.
Lissa wasn't in it much, but I still wanted to put her on here. ;) She's new to this book, as well. But she's very timid, but still sweet. Would've liked to see more of her. AND SHE AND I BASICALLY SHARE THE SAME NAME, OH MY GOODNESS, AM I HAVING CARDIAC ARREST? I am seriously called Lissa sometimes.
Jen is secrets upon secrets. Dun dun duh!
Keller, hello my dear? Are you finally coming into some sense?
Fritz had better 100% be a superhero.
Liam? Can I marry you at dawn?

So, ha ha, that's what I think.

The writing/book itself is great. I love how it kinda just assumes that superpowers are normal, without them, well, being normal. It is very refreshing. Albany and Brooklyn have to do every day life. As for the writing, it is very light and you will just fly through the book when you read it (!!). Everything is very fun and funny, but we still have some AAAAAACTION.

GAH. Ladies and gents, read this p-lease! 'S SO GOOD.

Bad content is basically null. There is some action (the extent of violence is unconsciousness). A few monsters. I would say that middle schoolers through infinity would enjoy this!

Summary for my rambly review: Blaze, can I buy your island? I have seven dollars and nine cents.

Synopsis:

(Light-por-ter)

n. someone who has the ability to manipulate light and can use that ability to teleport

Albany and her twin sister, Brooklyn, have gotten more comfortable in the superhero world. But when Blaze starts acting secretive and weird monsters attack, the girls realize there is more going on that they still don’t know about. Before long, they discover that Blaze is hiding something—or someone. With FOE still hiding in the shadows, the girls must decide who they can trust… before it’s too late.

Review:
Lightporter is an amazing sequel to Twinepathy- I love how they both tie in really well together. I read them both in the same day, and I didn’t feel like there were any gaps missing. I love the transitions between chapters/events; they feel really smooth and well done, and all the names were cool (Blaze… ahh what’s his real name?), albeit kinda weird sometimes (like Genesis?? and Ezra?).

I wasn’t really sure why the whole babysitting thing was there, though? Though I think it’s really cool that a Fitz is mentioned- there happens to also be a Fitz in Keeper of the Lost Cities, which is a series also with telepathy and superpowers and stuff.

Overall:
Twinepathy was a really good book and I went into Lightporter with the same expectations, and it did not disappoint (and again, I read them both in the same day, which should tell you something). 4.5 stars.

A review will also be on my blog soon.

Definitely needs a sequel--several tantalizing loose ends that could go interesting places (looking at you,
I feel like a little more Albany vs. someone conflict would add another layer of interest beyond saving the world/IDIA/various friends from villains; there was a bit of that here with Blaze's secrecy, but it felt too resolved too soon (yes this is strange coming from a reader who usually hates conflict xD). Though it could just be a personal preference for character-focused stories. As a plot-centered book, this was great (also I love the Antarctica and Bogota scenes. Teleporting characters certainly make for interesting settings!). Also Albany is getting a bit creative with what powers she does have, so that's good to see.

Good stuff:
• Really fun and cool in general
Honestly, this is just a hard book to not like. It’s fun adventures with superheroes, a lot of different settings, great characters and neat concepts all thrown together in a lil novel together. It’s a really light, awesome book to read if you want a fun story.

• Characters
Yeah, I’m always a sucker for characters, and this book has a whole boatload of really different, awesome cast members.
The twins, our heroic leads as always. Maddie is always adorable. Anvil I like more in this book (the cookie makin’ tough dude). Buuuut as always Blaze is my favorite. He’s awesome.

• Fast moving and twisty
Loootsa stuff happening so there’s no space for boredom. Also plenty of twists which I am not allowed to talk about. –covers mouth-
But yeah, FOE has plenty of tricks up their sleeve. O.o

• Clean
Good people, good messages, no language or other stuffs like that. So yeah, it works for a wide range of audiences that way so it’s cool. :)

Bad stuff:
• More answers
I’ve been kind of hanging hope on the theory that we’d get more backstory on our favorite characters (Blaze, Jen and Anvil, for the most part) and that we’d figure out what the heck was up with all the stolen memories from the last book. Aaaand while this was a fun adventure and we got a little bit of backstory I STILL WANT MORE. (Obviously it’s gonna happen in a future book and I’m looking forward to that but that was my main disappointment.

• Could have gone more in-depth, writing wise
Honestly, for the genre, this isn’t as much of an actual problem and more of a personal preference. But I kind of would have liked just a leeetle more descriptions and like . . . more pushing of the characters and super hard choices that need to be made? Maybe I’m just trying to find nitpicks and have been watching Mission Impossible for too long. XD

Overall: A really awesome, fun, twisty superhero story that’s great for everyone! I'd definitely recommend.

Time for a review.

Positives: CB Cook has managed to pull off a very fun world of superheroes. AND she's managed to bypass this secrecy thing from family (aka. Lying to family about hero work). I also thought we got some nice growth of characters, especially from our narrator, as well as a bit more information on the world. I also enjoyed the plot we had here, though I will admit I found it hard to remember what the main plot was (oops). It was light and pretty and just a fun romp through an adventure!!

Negatives: I will be honest and say the writing is rather...random. It's nothing to do with present tense or first person...its just that there seems to be a lot of randomness that could be tightened up a smidge without doing away with it. Such as the progression from the character banter scenes to the action and the revelation of unexplained secrets to the main plot. It just seemed too much information to take in in such a short time and I found myself struggling to remember who was who and what was what. Of course, real life is often random, but I think there is a way to tighten the prose, pacing, and progression whilst keeping it all in.

Opinion: This was fun! I'm trying to read some more superhero stories and I think this one was done well! Like I said in the negatives, the flow was confusing and the information was a bit much. But overall, it wrapped up the individual story's plot and left room for more books to come! Also I want to stress how much I SO VERY MUCHLY appreciate the bypassing of the secret keeping. This wasn't one of my favorite reads but it was a fun one I'll definitely keep following. From the last book, I think the author definitely improved.

Overall, a good book with a slight overdumping of questions but also wonderful characters to follow that the questions didn't bother me, at least, too much!

Content: Very clean! Even for the violence, it was very subtle and not even that much there..m

There are too few clean superhero books out there. Enter C.B. Cook to save the day! We get to learn more about Blaze, which is great, and learn some hidden talents of Anvil's. Plus, there are a few new characters introduced that seem to raise the stakes. Definitely looking forward to see how things develop in book three... Anyway, this fast-paced sequel has all our old friends plus some new- friends, enemies, and mysteries alike. Perfect for fans of superheroes, secret agents, and my (adopted) son Blaze. A fun read!

Previously published on Purely by Faith Reviews.

I have a hard time finding a great and original superhero series. Most of the ones I attempt to read just fall short of my expectations. Lightporter was not the case this round! I was super excited to come back to the characters I had gotten to know in the first book (Twinepathy review here), and I wanted to get to know each of them more. I have to admit I really enjoyed this book more than the last one, and the title was so clever!

Albany, the main character who’s point-of-view is focused on in this book, was someone I sort of liked. She wasn’t necessarily a favorite of mine, but I still want her to somehow end up with Blaze. Anyways, she certainly acted a bit rashly, but that’s is realistic in certain situations. I like her relationship with her sister. You don’t see those enough in books these days.

Blaze was still one of my favorites, and although I had hoped for some more dirt on his backstory this round, we did discover some pretty neat facts such as Ember and the mysterious agent. I still wonder what his real name is, and I hope we’ll see some more of his backstory at some point in the next book. I wonder where he lives and who is family is. Pretty much all that stuff xD.

I thought it was nice for Anvil (Cade) to get some of the spotlight this round. His cookies sound so good (and it’s awesome to discover his recipe in the back of the book). I’m still wondering what his dark past was… I’m also wanting some dirt on him.

I was disappointed that Denver and his parents as well as Ezra weren’t in the book as much this round, but I understand having to balance characters and making sure they have a purpose (instead of being that random one that is useless xD). The story was great overall, but we never got some closure from the memory-loss thing in the previous book.

I think this would be a great read for most people, but there is some violence and that is one of my reasons for recommending it for 12 and older.

Content Warnings: Violence (such as kicking lizards, fighting, etc); Some very, very light mentions of romance (recalling a character use to date this person, Albany being teased about jealousy, etc.

FTC DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy of this book. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Note: this took me slightly longer to read than normal books because it was on my computer and I have to blog and stuff too XD not because it was boring ;) Also I finished this yesterday afternoon (6/12/18)

I really liked this book! I thought it was even better than Twinepathy! ;)

C.B's writing skills have improved even more since the writing of Twinepathy and I loved this book!

But honestly though... there was this one time where I was waiting for like 5 tabs to load and I didn't know what else to do while I waited (it would not have been a super long wait but whatever XD) so I decided "Oh! While I wait I should read like 2 more pages of Lightporter!"
So I did that but....
1 chapter later.... WHOOPS! Not that that's a bad thing, in fact, it's good! This book kept my attention! :D

I really like the concept of everyone in the IDIA having code names. That's just so cool! There are so many awesome ones too, like Anvil and Finch!

Impressions of (some of) the characters...
Jen (Data)- I liked her character more in this book. In the last book, she seemed more cold and fierce. (XD) She was just better. (And the Singe thing too was super cool, it seems like her but at the same time, unexpected)

Blaze- I was so glad he got back to his normal mood! I love reading the parts where he and Albany are joking around!

Albany (Jazz) and Brooklyn (Pop)- I feel like the telepathic connection between these two strengthened a lot more and overall it was just more fun to read about! Like Jen, these characters are getting even better! :)

Denver- Once again, he is such a good big brother!!! <3

Ember (Ghost)- Ember was such a cool, new character. :D But slightly annoying... :P

Lila (Maddie)- Maddie seems not so young in this book! And she is definitely growing in her power XD it's a pretty cool power too!

Also, I feel like the twins parents were just gone in this one, I mean where were they??? :P
And I also feel that the twins are more older in this book and seem 17 instead or 14 or 15.

I loved this quote... XDD
“I want you back here. Immediately. No stopping for food.” She pauses. “But since I know you will anyway, I’d like a chocolate milkshake.”

Blaze gives her a weak grin.

I rate it 4.5 stars!!!
I absolutely cannot wait for the third book!!

*unintelligible fangirling noises* I read this book within about 24 hours. I stayed up way too late, but I just couldn't put it down! It was so fun to see all my favorite characters again, and even have cameos from the ones that "were off on other missions". Not to mention the interesting new characters. It had a large cast, but that didn't bother me at all. C.B. Cook did a great job managing them all. I loved the way it built on Twinepathy. It wasn't just another of the same thing... It was a great mixture of new and familiar. Both in their personal lives and in their superhero lives. Like, the characters grew and changed, but so did the world building... we learned a lot of new tidbits about the superhero world. Pretty cool. And all the secrets and surprises... *smiles knowingly* And yet there is so much we still don't know... like Blaze's real name, or what his family is like. And FOE is still in need of some IDIA investigation. I can't wait for the next book! I think I liked Lightporter even better than Twinepathy. Although Blaze... oh, Blaze. when I started the book I was worried I wouldn't like his newfound grumpiness. But again, it was balanced out well with the other characters, and we still had moments of his usual spunk. He seemed almost normal by the end. :) I also think my sister is rubbing off on me... I began shipping characters... something I did not do in Twinepathy. XD (Shipping isn't usually my thing, lol!) Anyways, GO READ THIS if you haven't! It's easy to read, interesting, and lots of fun.

A fast-paced superhero adventure with a few twists and new faces!

Albany has learned to control herself a bit, and so doesn't completely botch her new mission: find out what's eating at fellow IDIA member Blaze. Questions are raised, a few answers given, secrets revealed, alliances tested, friendships solidified (rather than broken up, per soap opera/dark drama trend)!

Like Twinepathy, Lightporter showcases a unique use of superpowers; even "lame" ones are used to great effect. It takes a few tropes as well--monster attacks, rogue agents and the like--and adds some fun twists.
I stayed up late to finish this, it was so exciting.

In addition to this amazing batch of superpowers, light mystery, and growing characters, the author somehow bribed Anvil to release a cookie recipe. Can't wait to try it. :D

I simply love these books!! I can't recommend them enough!
Wholesome, but extremely entertaining, action-packed and fast paced. Nothing gorey or vulgar which is great.
These are seriously the most creative books I've ever read and I'm constantly finding a twist in the plot and asking myself "how on earth could anyone even think of this?!"
I'm staring at the review on the front that says "A fun sequel complete with action, humor, and, of course, superpowers." And I'm thinking, "fun is the best word you could think of?" This book is spectacular, amazing, fantastic, superb, excellent, awesome, fabulous and more!!

The ONLY thing that is just a sorta complaint is that I think it'd add a ton if there was just a teeeensy bit more description of the characters. For example, all we know about Blaze is he has fudge-color hair and there was only a single mention of Brooklyn having wavy blonde hair. It'd be nice if there was just a little more, like eye color or height. It'd add a ton to the overall "image" of the story 😃

UPDATE: read for the second time and love this book just as much!
UPDATE: read for the third time, I can't wait for #3 to come out!

After reading Twinepathy last year, I was very eager to begin this new book to the series. In Lightporter, C.B. Cook takes the superhero world to a whole new level. A story of honesty, loyalty and trust unfolds before our eyes. In this new book we join both familiar and new characters as they fight for their lives, unaware of what lies just around the corner.

I was flabbergasted with how creative the superpowers were developed. I mean like seriously, that last battle was just jaw-dropping. To keep this review spoiler free, all I can say is, just read the book for yourself.

The plot thickens, the lightning clashes and the tired heroes take one last stand to save the world.
