She's the last person he expected to see, but she's also the only person who can help him bring down a kidnapping ring. Fierce Justice by Piper J. Drake is the fifth installment in her True Heroes contemporary suspense series. Some characters in this novel appear in book four, but the necessary backstory is seamlessly inserted, and this book is a standalone.

Arin (pronounced ah-Rin) Siri is a K9 handler and sniper for a contract security firm investigating human trafficking in Hawaii. Jason Landon is a mercenary for hire. Their past interactions were on opposite sides, but now they must work together to save innocents. Can the two overcome their angst for the sake of the greater good without losing their hearts in the process?

I’ve not read any of the other books by Piper Drake, but I plan to rectify that. Fierce Justice is a first class romantic suspense. Arin is a strong female lead who doesn’t need a man, although she wants this one. Jason is man enough to let a woman stand on her own and is willing to take the supportive role, rather than the lead.

I give Fierce Justice 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to anyone who enjoys action and romance, especially together. Sadly, the sexual content may be off-putting to some readers.

My thanks to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

My Rating: 4.5 Stars

Arin Siri is a K9 handler on a current mission with her team, Search and Protect and runs into Jason Landon again. This time under very tenuous circumstances. He is wounded and Arin has to abort her mission to get him to safety. When Jason wakes up in a hospital, he is shocked to see Arin standing guard over him. If she could, Arin would leave Jason to deal with his circumstances and try and complete her task, but that is not what happens.

Although at first seriously hurt, Jason just wants to get back on his own mission. To some degree it is at cross-purposes with Arin's, but he reluctantly knows that she can help him. What Jason is striving to do is to take a kidnapping ring down. Arin's goal to destroy a trafficking operation at her home base in Hawaii.

Just as in the four previous stories in the True Heroes series, Fierce Justice does not disappoint. This story, like the others, has serious themes, and as always, a romance between the principal characters.Although these stories do well as standalones, there is always the inclusion of secondary characters from the other stories. In this case most notably, Mali, Arin's sister.

While readers of the fourth book in the series, Total Bravery, might recall, Arin's job, former career and even character traits are made known. In this case, there is an extra layer to Jason's character. In his job as a mercenary, he has seen some difficult, if not questionable things. His last case left him wanting for more, very much concerned about certain things. With current circumstances Jason realizes that things must change. But how?

The romance in this story is a bit more of a slow burn compared to the others, but that just might be because of the scenarios Jason and Arin face. And, as always, each Search and Protect team member has a dog as a partner, so readers got to enjoy Arin's German Shepherd Dog King. This book was wonderful, providing action without letup, but I am holding back a half of a star due to the rather abrupt ending. I look forward to the next book in the series.

As mentioned, this is the fifth book in the series. Other books are Extreme Honor, Ultimate Courage, Winter Valor (novella), Total Bravery, Absolute Trust and Forever Strong.

Mmmm.... A really great read with fantastic characters. I have a GSD and find I gravitate to books that contain dogs and action, this was perfect.

As a romantic action reader this was the perfect mix and had the ability to hold my attention all the way through with no lulls. You'll enjoy this book if your a fan of action, dogs, or romance. With all three it's the trifecta of what you're looking for.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Good book. It starts a few months after the end of the previous book (Total Bravery). Though this one is connected to the last book, it can be read as a standalone as earlier events are seamlessly explained. Arin (Ah-rin) and her dog King are part of a team that continues to investigate human trafficking in Hawaii. She's surprised to stumble across a former foe unconscious and bleeding and not very happy to have to abort her mission to get him to safety. But considering where she saw him last, he may have information vital to their investigation.

When Jason comes to, he's surprised to find Arin standing guard in his hospital room. The last time he saw her, they were on opposites sides of a mission. But the things she told him made him question his actions and ticked off the wrong people. Now he's on a quest to bring down a kidnapping ring and maybe make up for some of those past actions. It's too much for one man alone to handle, and the Search and Protect team are the only ones who might be able to help him.

I liked the combination of personal and professional relationships between Arin and Jason. Neither one was able to forget the other after their last meeting, and Jason at least was happy to get to spend some time with Arin. She isn't too sure that she can trust him, and the hoops she made him jump through at first both annoyed and amused him. Jason will do whatever he needs to to get their help in stopping the kidnapping ring. That it meshes well with their trafficking investigation is a bonus.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Arin and Jason. She is tough, independent, and sometimes abrasive, but she also has a vulnerable side that she hides well. Jason hasn't always been too concerned about the morality of the jobs he took, but the last one made him take a closer look at himself. Determined to do better, Jason puts himself at Arin's disposal. He is smart, thinks fast on his feet, and is very observant. I loved how well he understood Arin. He saw the vulnerability that she hid from everyone else, but he also appreciated her strength and capabilities. It was awesome to see that he could be protective without trying to hold her back. Arin was stunned to realize that Jason had gotten under her skin. His acceptance of her just as she was is something she'd never experienced before. Underneath it all was an explosive attraction that neither one could resist. As they grew closer physically and emotionally, each of them wondered what would become of what they had. The ending had a twist I didn't see coming but was exactly right for them.

The suspense was terrific. The wariness between Arin and Jason at first added an extra layer of tension to the investigation. Their partnership in the first rescue went a long way toward resolving their trust issues. I was on the edge of my seat as they found the first set of victims, and Arin had to rely on Jason's skills to prevent a tragedy. I liked their teamwork as their investigation led them to the identity of the new head of the trafficking ring. The actual takedown was a nailbiter as Jason went undercover to get the proof they needed. But it wasn't quite over, as there was still another "shipment" that had to be found. The author's descriptions of that rescue were so vivid that I felt as though I was there, from the sights and smells to the heart-pounding terror of the victims themselves. Once again Jason and Arin made an outstanding team and brought all to a satisfying conclusion. There was a neat bit at the end that looks like it may be the lead-in to the next book and I can't wait to read it.

One of my favorite characters was Arin's K9 partner, King. I loved the intensity of their bond. King was one of the few beings that Arin trusted unconditionally. I enjoyed her surprise at the way King took to Jason. This made it a little easier for her to start to trust Jason. There were a couple of good scenes between Jason and King. I especially liked the one where Jason took King out for a walk while Arin slept.

Another important part of the book was the continued repairing of the relationship between Arin and her sister Mali. There were several times when Mali irritated me with her attitude toward Arin. She really had a hard time accepting Arin the way she was. Her instructions to Arin for the reception made me think that she still didn't respect her sister's choices. It made me understand why Arin always felt so out-of-step with her own family. I was doubly glad that Jason was there to support her.

This is one of my favorite series, and Fierce Justice kept my love burning. It could be a standalone story, but it does help to know the background of the other players to fill it out. I liked Jason immediately, even though he took a backseat to Arin, he was strong and capable. In fact, his deferring to her judgement only made him more desirable to me. Arin could have come across as some hard bitch, but the author deftly wove her heart into the character so that his desire was believable. Their romance was slow and steady, giving them each time to understand their feelings with plenty of sizzle to round it out. The ending was a little different, but it was perfect for two strong people with long-term goals. This book had it all. Fast paced danger, intrigue, romance and friendship all tied up in a book I couldn’t put down.

Fierce Justice is action packed with breathing taking moments that readers will not be able get enough of. If you start with book 1 or book 5 readers will enjoy this book.

The characters are strong, smart but have a hard time trusting when it comes to romance. Every characters and secondary characters are interesting, smartly written and easy to connect with.

Romantic suspense novels are my favorite treat. I love reading about a couple falling in love while bullets are flying and the adrenaline is *ahem* pumping. So I was really excited to start my first book by Piper J. Drake. FIERCE JUSTICE follows Jason, a repenting mercenary for hire, and Arin, a K9 handler on a search and rescue special ops team. The three of them (counting Arin’s dog) are rushing to break up a human trafficking ring.

What I liked: I don’t want to spoil anything, but I thought the last quarter of this book was solid in both action and relationship building. I enjoyed watching Arin and Jason make it work by overcoming obstacles through compromise and discussion, not by those obstacles magically disappearing. I also thought Jason’s devotion to Arin was adorable. I loved being in his head when he was thinking about how badass and awesome she is.

What didn’t work for me: As much as I enjoyed the last quarter of the book, the first part didn’t grab me. I didn’t feel like Arin and Jason had any real chemistry, and I really couldn’t connect with Arin. I could tell that he was into her, but she was almost too introverted and contained. It made her seem like she lacked depth until much later in the book. The action plot was a little convoluted and it took me a while to figure out, or really care, what the primary objective was. To put my reading experience in perspective, it took me four days to read the first 75% of this book and 1.5 hours to read the last 25%. That’s how disproportional it was for me.

Overall, I thought this was a fine romantic suspense novel. I liked the dedication to diversity and the K9 layers to the story. The author has obviously done her research. I was intrigued by the lead in to the next book but I am still undecided as to if I will read it.

ARC REVIEW

True Heroes #5, Still in Hawaii with the Search and Protect team this time with Arin (ah-Rin) and Jason. Both characters were introduced in Total Bravery, it would be a safe bet to at least read Total Bravery for the wee bit of background for the characters and the previous storyline. It is connected but still a standalone it's not imperative that you read it the characters talk about what happened in the last book so you are not left completely clueless.

The white slavery ring the Search and Protect team broke up in the last book isn't entirely gone, they have a new boss who is cleaning house. Arin is part of the search and rescue team searching the big island for the people still missing. What she finds is the security guy from six months prior; when he realised what and who he was guarding let Arin and her team rescue the people. Jason Landon left that company after he realized that they have no moral or ethical boundaries. Feeling like he has to atone for his part has tracked down where some of the captives are being held unfortunately one of his former colleagues knocks him unconscious before he finds them and that is how Arin and her K-9, King, find him. Now Arin and Jason's overall mission is the same, stop the new ring leader and save all the people they can. Between bombs, shootouts, and going undercover the adventure is pretty intense at times.

The attraction is there but neither of them know what to do with it, Arin isn't sure if she should even trust him and she's never had feelings like this for anyone; she doesn't know how to handle the emotions. She always felt like the black sheep of the family and never felt like she fits in anywhere. Jason has never felt like this for anyone either, he is completely taken with Arin her strength, her beauty, her altruism. One meeting six months ago completely changed his life and now here he is working with her and he knows if he doesn't tread lightly and let her take the lead he'll scare her off.

Overall, I loved this book. The action was paced perfectly with the romance. The romance was a slow burn but with Arin's personality it couldn't have gone any other way without seeming out of character for her. I particularly loved the ending it wasn't your typical HEA for Arin and Jason but it's one that was perfect for them.

I think what I liked most about this one was that it wasn't your typical romance. Arin and Jason weren't really sure if they liked each other at the start, not sure if they could trust each other, yet they were working together, albeit reluctantly. It was as they worked together they seemed to start to trust each other, which lead them to liking the other, which lead to more.

I honestly didn't think this one would end like it did. I thought it would end with Jason being a new co-work at the Search and Rescue. Instead Arin let Jason take the job he wanted to, but she let him know in no uncertain terms that she was going to be waiting for him, heck she was even altering her work to be in the same part of the world, a very Arin move to let Jason know how much he meant to her.

3.5 stars- Fierce Justice is a book that I read earlier this year and then just never shared my thoughts on it. I'm going to work on catching up on reviews before the end of the year so wanted to finally write up my thoughts on this one. I knew I wanted to read this book based off of that cover alone. Our family has a German Shepherd that we love and adore so any book with one on the cover is one that is bound to draw my interest! I'm also always on the hunt for good romantic suspense series to follow so I couldn't resist giving this book a try. I started this series completely out of order as it looks like this is book five but it didn't effect my enjoyment of this book at all. I do think I missed out on some details as I believe that Jason and Arin met in a previous book. The author did a good job of filling in the details though so I didn't feel lost at all. One of things that I really enjoyed about this book was the setting. I haven't read many books set in Hawaii and I thought that the Hawaiian setting really added to this book. I also really liked the suspense portion of this book. The suspense portion was what kept me turning the pages the entire time. I will be honest and say that the romance portion of this book wasn't really what drew me into it. I liked Arin and Jason together but their relationship just felt like it almost took a backseat to everything else that was going on. Which is almost more realistic if you think about it - when someone is in the midst of a dangerous situation I feel like the last thing that they are going to be focused on is falling deeply in love. I liked that the author gave their relationship a more realistic feel (I don't want to say more because spoilers). I'm also hoping that we will get to see more of them in future books!

Overall, I enjoyed my time with this book and plan on reading more from this series. I think that I will try and go back to the beginning with the first book. If you enjoy suspenseful reads, then I definitely think that this book is one to check out (and you don't need to read this series in order which is always a positive in my opinion). I would recommend this book to romantic suspense fans and romance readers. It's an enjoyable read!

Bottom Line: An enjoyable romantic suspense!

I've read earlier books in this series and was keen to read this one, too. I requested and was given a copy of this book, via NetGalley. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.

Search and Protect are working with the authorities in Hawaii to help recover people who have been trafficked. Whilst involved in a mission, one of their K-9 handlers, Arin Siri, discovers Jason Landon knocked out. They met on a previous mission when he'd been one of the mercenaries endeavouring to protect someone's property - property he had been unaware housed people who were being trafficked. Now he's on his own mission to bring down the kidnapping ring behind the trafficking and it was whilst on a scouting mission he'd been knocked out. Arin is unsure whether to trust him or not but his intel helps, and the opposition are gunning for him . . . So begins an action packed race against time to discover just who is behind the kidnappings and bring them to justice whilst freeing their victims.

What a page turner this story is! King, Arin's canine partner, has a fantastic starring role in this search for the victims and is amazing. All the human characters have their flaws which somehow make them more believable and easier to relate to. I really appreciate how this author manages to weave threads from previous stories into this one so it can be read and followed by people who haven't had the pleasure of reading the earlier stories, making it possible to read it as a standalone - mind you, I suspect it will tempt to you to read the earlier stories, too. The strong partnerships between the K-9 characters and their handlers, their formidable skill set and mutual loyalty are evident throughout this story. I enjoyed how King gradually accepted Jason although Jason remained understandably wary of King when Arin wasn't present.

This is an action packed, superb addition to this enthralling series and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it and the earlier books. I can't wait to read more in this series and other books from this talented author.

Fierce Justice is a sexy and intense romantic thriller. I really liked both main characters and especially enjoyed their banter. And of course I love a tough hero who’s really soft inside. I think my only struggle with the story was it was really intense at times. The story revolves around them trying to take down a trafficking ring and those scenes really packed a punch. So if you’re looking for a more dramatic and intense story along with your romance the. I highly recommend it.

The characters are flawed and real and totally swoon worthy. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to more adventures in this series.

Fierce Justice by Piper J. Drake is book 5 in True Heroes Series. This is the story of Jason Landon and Arin Siri. I haven't yet read the previous books, so for me this was a standalone book.
Arin works K-9 for the Search and Protect team and has run ins with Jason before. Jason is a hired man for a mercenary group and he started to question that. Normally they are both on different sides of a case, changes when they both start working together to meet a mutual goal. What they are find that there is more to the other person then they thought...along with the attraction they have been dancing around. Exciting Read.

Synopsis
Arin Siri (pronounced Ah-rin, the author works this explanation into her book several times to reinforce this) is a k9 handler for a private security company called Search and Protect that has contracted out to local authorities in Hawaii to aid with taking down a human trafficking ring. As a military trained sniper, she’s plenty comfortable being in tight situations, so when she stumbles over the unconscious body of Jason Landon when preforming a sweep as her team moves in to another trafficking hot spot, she’s less than pleased when her boss orders his extraction as her new priority. But she does what she is told and when Jason wakes up in hospital, she’s one of the first things he sees.

Jason Landon worked with a security/mercenary team that apparently didn’t ask too many questions when it comes to a well paying job. The first time he met Arin, was going nose to nose with her when she came to breach the security of the buildings he and his team were charged with protecting. But when she tells him what he is protecting, his morals kick in and he steps aside to allow her team to perform their rescue. Failing his employer earns him a demotion and a firm reprimand. But he can’t forget about what it was they were charged with protecting (human slaves). So he decides to take matters into his own hands (read get some info to gain some good faith when he whistle blows) to get some intel on the operations to take to the cops…then he gets hit over the head from behind and wakes up in hospital with Arin and her k9 partner guarding him/detaining him.

Arin and Jason have to learn to work together. Without Arin killing him…

My Thoughts
Let me just start by saying, I liked Arin’s character a lot. She’s a no nonsense, professional, not-willing-to-put-up-with-your-sexist-crap woman, who knows her job and does it very well. She doesn’t have time to play games, and she has no intentions of being nice if you stand in her way. And don’t even think about trying to talk to her before she’s had her morning coffee, she’s liable to rip your arm off. Or your head to stop your unnecessary jabbering.

Jason….wasn’t my favorite. He views everything as something of a game. Every move he makes in the beginning is a calculated, in order to get Arin to trust him and give him more free rein. He goads her on purpose, then realizes he hit a sore spot then moves to soothe the incident over immediately. It annoyed me how calculating he was. The only good thing that I kinda liked about him is that he recognizes that Arin is a well-trained professional who deserves his respect…and that maybe he should listen when she gives him commands. This should just be a given, but it’s made out (a bit) to be such a wonderful thing. But really, he’s just using her as a means to his own end. It’s convenient for him to stay with her so long as they are both moving in the same direction, which they do most of the book. Convenient.

What I did like was that this book does deal with a very serious issue. Human trafficking. The romance was more of a slow burn (not a true slow burn, but a lot slower than everything else I have been reading lately) and lets the human trafficking situation take more of a front seat, which I like because it totally should.

Fun fact, this is the second book in a month that I have read that the k9 partner’s name was King. Is King a common name for working dogs?

In Conclusion
This was an alright romance that doesn’t immediately jump into the steamy bits. It deals with a more serious problem that these two professional soldiers are well equipped to deal with. It’s refreshing to see a woman take the lead instead of the man always leading. This should become more of a thing. Love interests should work together. Heck, I think there should be more stories where the man is the ‘damsel in distress’ and the woman is the savior. I would read the sh*t out of those. So while it wasn’t the best romance I ever read, I did quite enjoy it and it deserves the 3 stars it has earn without question.

REVIEW: FIERCE JUSTICE is the fifth instalment in Piper J.Drake’s contemporary, adult TRUE HEROES romantic, military suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for the Search and Protect team, a Special Ops team of mercenaries for hire location in the Hawaiian Islands. This is K9 handler, and Search and Protect Agent Arin Siri, and independent mercenary Jason Landon’s story line. FIERCE JUSTICE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Arin and Jason) FIERCE JUSTICE follows the building relationship and professional partnership between K9 handler, and Search and Protect Agent Arin Siri, and independent mercenary Jason Landon. Arin Siri has no idea the injured man she found while on assignment is the same man she met, months earlier, while investigating a suspected human trafficking ring. Jason Landon’s previous encounter with our story line heroine changed the direction of Jason’s life. Working together to shut down the same ongoing trafficking ring, Jason and Arin will discover their mutual attraction and ease of working with one another. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Arin and Jason, and the potential fall-out as Jason’s time working with Arin comes with an expiry date.

Jason Landon had quickly flipped sides but finds himself targeted by the men with whom he used to work. Questioning his choice of missions, Jason offers his help to the Search and Protect Team in an effort to prove he is more than his last assignment. Arin Siri and her German shepherd King prefer to work alone but finding a familiar face in Jason Landon gave Arin another purpose going forward.

The relationship between Arin and Jason is slow to build as Arin struggles with issues of trust. Jason’s attraction to Arin is immediate but convincing Arin to take a chance is a battle Jason is willing to fight. The $ex scenes are passionate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are re-introduced to Erin’s sister Mali, and her boyfriend, fellow agent Raul; communications specialist Pua; founder of the Search and Protect mercenary group Zu and his dog Buck; and Kenny, a man with his ear to the ground about the illegal goings on in the Hawaiian Islands. The requisite evil has many faces.

FIERCE JUSTICE is a story of suspense, romance, trust and communication. The premise is fast paced, action packed and inviting; the characters are energetic and strong; the romance is captivating and intense. FIERCE JUSTICE continues to focus on the destructive nature of the human trafficking trade, and the people who struggle to take down everyone involved. FIERCE JUSTICE does not end on a HEA but a happily ever after-for now

This is my first book by Piper J. Drake and found most of Fierce Justice enjoyable. Since this is book 5 in the True Heroes series, I am not sure if I am missing out on anything, especially regarding the Search and Rescue Corporation but regarding Arin and Jason’s story I did feel like it can be read as a standalone.

Right away we start with questions as Arin and her K9, King, find an unconscious man who she soon finds is someone she’s met before. Arin and Jason met six months prior while she was on a different mission on a different island of Hawaii. That first meet was definitely different from this one, they had a gun and rifle pointing at each other. They had come to an agreement and went their separate ways. This time around she is not able to leave him behind and now is she forced to keep an eye on him. Once he is conscious she finds him to be someone they could use to assist in this current mission. He has some intel on the human trafficking organization they are tracking and when Arin and a loved one are placed in danger, his help becomes imperative.

As much as I enjoyed the action packed storyline, I had a difficult time really connecting to Arin and Jason individually and together in the beginning. Arin was definitely a fierce warrior, but something about her was almost too abrasive for me. But we slowly get to see her vulnerable side. As for Jason, he was an interesting character. He never had a problem being labeled a mercenary just as long as the money was there. But after that last mission six months ago he started asking some hard questions for himself. So as Arin and Jason starts to get to really know each other, they both started to grow on me too. I had a slight issue with what drove them together initially, I’m not sure if I really felt their connection. It is hard to describe because the chemistry was definitely there once the story went along but the initial attraction I didn’t feel.

All in all this book was good. I think what really drove me to try a Piper J. Drake book was her a ability to incorporate working dogs in her stories.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy I received through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Arin has spent most of her life feeling like an outcast in her own family, so when the opportunity presented itself to join the military she jumped on it. Now as part of Search and Protect, she has a group of people she can relate to but she still feels like she has to work hard to connect with anyone. She is determined to find a way to reconnect with her sister Mali and keep her safe though, so she puts in the effort to keep every promise she makes to demonstrate that she is worthy of Mali's trust.

When Arin first meets Jason, she sees a merc who most definitely does not meet the definition of trustworthy- but she can't get him out of her head. When King finds him unconscious smack in the middle of their search grid on a mission, she is surprised and more than a little suspicious but she agrees to stick close to find out what he is up to.

Jason most definitely has not forgotten Arin since their first meeting which inspired him to make some changes in his line of work. His conscience doesn't like anything about the last job his employers took on, so he quits and goes out on his own in the hopes he can do something to change the balance in karma's eyes going forward. Arin is as prickly as anyone he has ever met, but somehow he manages to convince her that he isn't lying about his motives.

Not many people see Arin clearly but Jason is one of the few who can read her and understand how to respond to what she isn't saying. His interest in her is more than skin deep and she made quite the impression on him despite the brevity of their first encounter. He loves her intensity and the depth of her determination, but the future beyond the mission is one big unknown. Both are hesitant to voice their feelings for different reasons, so they just go with the flow and enjoy their undeniably combustible chemistry... but the time for decisions is on the horizon!

As always, Arin's canine partner King makes a wonderful secondary character in the story. Fierce Justice is one of my favorite books in this series so far and I am looking forward to team leader Zu's turn in the spotlight!

Title: Fierce Justice
Series: True Heroes #5
Author: Piper J.Drake
Pages: 304
Genre: romance
Forever
book synopsis
As a K9 handler on the Search and Protect team, Arin Siri needs to be where the action is--and right now that's investigating a trafficking operation in Hawaii. When an enemy from her past shows up bleeding, she's torn between the desire to patch Jason up or put more holes in him. Then again, the hotshot mercenary could be the person she needs to bust open her case.

Jason Landon's team had always been about taking the contract, getting paid, and not asking questions. But after his last mission went south, he started to get curious. His questions quickly drove him out of his mercenary group and off the grid. Now, the only people he can think of to help him are the Search and Protect team -- and the dark beauty who is as ready to kill him as she is to bed him. And he's totally ready to risk the former for the chance at the latter. But he isn't the only person with a target on his back. Arin's in danger too, and he'll do everything he can to keep her safe.

My thoughts
Rating: 5
Would I recommend this series: yea
Will I be reading any more by this author: yes
Since this is my first time reading anything by this author I can say and will say that I loved it , even though the romance was slow burning it still worked in the story and didn't take anything away from it, I loved the interaction between the characters especially with Arin and Jason. Since I've read the hole series before this one and I do have one other one to read I would say its up to you to read it as a series or as a standalone , in my case just reading this one had made me want to read books as a series . I do have to say that there is one character I don't like as much as the others and that's Arin 's sister , how she acts towards her and makes her feel. With that said I would like to thank Netgalley for letting me read and review it ,exchange for my honest opinion.

All right! Back to Hawaii and the Search and Protect team and the honorable men, women, and canines who do their best to stop the bad guys before they dig their hooks too deeply into...wow, that sentence was getting a little long winded, wasn't it? Let's just say the S&P team do everything they can to thwart the bad guys and keep the exploited safe.

Jason...well, he wasn't exactly in the best place when we first met him. As head of a security team working for the bad guys, he was on the opposite side from Arin and her people. Since learning the truth about the people who hired him, Jason's done what he can to right the wrongs he inadvertently helped create.

But he's only one man and the people he's up against are widespread. Which means his defection from their ranks puts him in their crosshairs.

Arin and her crew (technically, they're just coworkers, I guess, since Arin's pretty solitary. Excluding King. Arin's pretty dedicated to King.) are just the people to help keep Jason safe AND for him to help make amends. Both the information he gained when working for the traffickers and the skills he's learned in his time in security come in handy.

Let's just say people who deal in human cargo aren't terribly worried about collateral damage. And they REALLY don't want to be caught doing what they're doing.

I've enjoyed the different couples we've met with this team and I really liked seeing Jason find a way under Arin's walls. As tough as she is, Arin's...I don't want to say vulnerable, exactly, but that's kind of right, too. She knows she's not the best in social situations and she's aware of how uncomfortable she can make people. She's willing to step out of her comfort zone for her sister, but that's about it. Until Jason comes along and slides under her walls.

Solid story, intense characters, and smokin' sexy times. *thumbs up*

FIERCE JUSTICE is intense, gripping and held my attention captive from beginning to end. While this title could be read as a stand on its own story I believe your reading experience will be enhanced by following this series from the start. Anything you need to know in the backstory is explained within this story so you aren’t missing anything beyond great stories and some nuances.

Arin and Jason have run into each other before on seemingly opposites sides so there is a definite lack of trust between them at first. And since Arin had to abandon her mission in order to get Jason to safety, well, that just added another layer of tensions between them. Still, she stood guard over him and listened to his explanations… or as much as he was willing to give. As a former mercenary, Jason was used to being the hired gun power but not in an illegal sense. He was to protect property and people, yes for money, but he’s not the bad guy… although that’s a very thin line to Arin, and even Jason as he made discoveries that had him leaving that mercenary group to strike out on his own. In many ways, Arin and Jason need each other to accomplish their individual missions. They might not like it, but the facts don’t change just because you don’t trust someone.

Jason and Arin’s romance is a slow burn but with sizzle along the way. I enjoyed how they bantered and danced around each other while the trust was building between them. The main concentration was the mission to take down traffickers and that held my attention above everything else. If you love a good Romantic Suspense that is believable with likable characters and a strong storyline then you’ll want to pick up FIERCE JUSTICE.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

This is the 5th book in the True Heroes series and can absolutely be read as a stand alone although I recommend you at least read book 4 before you read this one so you can understand the events (and the relationships) that happen in this one better. This one is about Arin Siri and Jason Landon. Arin and Jason met in the last book when her team infiltrated and rescued the people being held by a slave ring. Jason's team was the team that had been hired to protect the compound, not knowing exactly what they were protecting. That meeting changed Jason's outlook on things and left him with a fascination for the woman who helped set those people free.

I was iffy on whether I would truly like Arin after how she was in the other books but especially after the last one. I was really hoping that she would grow on me and she definitely did! She has hidden depths that I truly didn't see coming and it made me love this book! Jason may have started off as a "bad" guy but I can't truly think of him that way because as soon as he knew what was going on, he stepped back. And while he may not have always listened to his conscience and done exactly the right thing every step of his life, he still steps up when it truly matters. They are perfect for each other and I loved every step in this book! The only thing I wish there had been? An epilogue. I'm not sure I absolutely loved the way it ended but it definitely makes sense for them. I just wish there had been an epilogue to show their lives together farther out. All in all though, definitely a great read!

Arin is a tough, independent woman. She has ragged edges and really only feels comfortable around her partner, KO King. She takes her duties as K9 handler and sniper for her firm very seriously. now part of a human trafficking task force in Hawaii, she is coming against the dregs of society. She met a mercenary on their last job and let him go but she has been wracked with doubts over whether she did the right thing.

Jason knew there was something hinky with his last job but it paid well and he looked the other way. Well until a certain sniper took him to task. last time they were on opposite sides but Jason has cleaned up his act and is now undertaking his own investigation into his old clients.

Arin is no simpering wall flower. She will disembowel you with a spoon if you look at her wrong. But she does have a gooey centre, mostly filled by her sister and King, and to a lesser extent her team members. She does not need a man to complete her but she would love some companionship. She has doubts over her own worth and her ability to keep a promise to her sister.

Jason is a good guy who just got caught up with the money and let his morals slip slightly. His halo definitely needs a good polish! But he sees his own faults and wants to correct them. He is secure in himself in that he does not feel threatened by Arin's type A personality. He knows when she is the person to lead and perfectly comfortable taking orders from her.

This book is part of a series, and though it’s pitched as a stand alone, I felt at times that I was missing some vital information. Especially since the main characters had briefly met in a previous book, as well as understanding better some of the secondary characters that had obviously had a prominent part in previous books.
That said, it’s a well written story. Arin Siri, former military, is a member of the Search and Protect team. Her team and her K-9 dog are investigation a human trafficking ring in Hawaii. When she comes across an unconscious body, she’s surprise to discover it’s the same man she confronted six months prior during a job involving the traffickers.
At the time, Jason Landon was working as a protective contractor ( mercenaries) for a man he had no idea was into human trafficking . Going off on his own has created problems for him.
As Jason and Arin start unifying forces, the attraction and connection increases. And when Arin is put in danger, Jason will do anything to keep her safe.
The plot was engaging with it’s suspense, bad guys and imperfect good ones. The characters interesting and I especially appreciated that the author gave us a strong female character.
I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

3 1/2 STARS!

Danger surrounds them as the latest in Piper J. Drake's True Heroes series kicks off! A known consort of the bad guys is found injured, so does she trust him or not? Arin and her dog King have to make this decision and deal with the consequences. I found it hard to connect to this story. I didn't mind the characters, it just felt like the action was a bit flat for my liking. I've enjoyed several of the books in the series, but this was sadly one of my least favorites.

Search and Protect team member Arin Siri works best when it's just her and her K9 partner King. She's all about getting things done as a team, but she doesn't like taking any more orders than she has to, and her way works ... amazingly well. When she stumbles across a wounded mercenary, she sets out to get him help ... even though she's not totally sure he's trust worthy.

Jason Landon found himself in a mixed up situation when he discovered he was protecting the land of someone up to no good. He's now facing hesitation on getting the good guys to trust him even though he wants to help put an end to this trafficking situation. When Arin decides to take a chance on trusting him, they find themselves fighting attraction as danger surrounds them.

Fierce Justice by Piper J. Drake, a True Heroes novel, was a very entertaining story. The book followed book 4 - Total Bravery in the series following the sister of Mali Siri in this fifth book in the series. Arin Siri was a fascinating heroine! She had served in the military and was presently working for Search and Protect Corporation along with K9 King (GSD). Arin and King were searching for victims of human trafficking when they came across an unconscious man, Jason Landon. Arin and Jason had met before and he had provided her assistance. Jason was fascinated by Arin and wanted to learn more about her. Arin had Jason taken to the hospital as he had a head concussion. When he woke up in the hospital, he told Arin he had to get out of the hospital as his former employer now wanted him dead! Arin and King helped him escape from the men trying to kill him. Arin and Jason decided to join forces in finding the missing victims. There was an attraction between Arin and Jason and it was fun watching their relationship grow. It was fun reading the interaction between the German Shepherd K9 King and Arin and also Jason! Following Arin and Jason on their adventure was a fun read! I highly recommend this novel.
