I think I have found one of my favourite manga series for this year if not the decade so far. This series has been as good as Yotsuba&!. I mean all of the chapters are good if not great. My favourite in this one was the last one where Hakumei and Mikochi go on a night train. The feelings evoked in this chapter were just phenomenal. And the art is great too.

It’s really refreshing to read stories like this were there are no life or death conflicts and the small, everyday moments in life are celebrated. And food, nature, crafts, and friends are considered the most important things. Love this series it helps me a lot when I’m down

Another cute Hakumei to Mikochi volume, can't wait to see the events of this volume getting adapted in the anime! We finally see Mikochi's sister (haha, I knew she had another reason to visit), our girls make an onsen, go on a trip (guess the next volume will be about what they are going to do in that place), and other things. Gorgeous illustrations with many details!

♡\( ̄▽ ̄)/♡

It was so nice to see the relationships between the different characters flourish!! Also, I really like how the author actually writes down a recipe or the instructions for making an object and incorporates it in the storyline instead of having a character just magically make something.
And the ARTWORK!!! (♡°▽°♡)

Read this fourth volume of Takuto Kashiki's Hakumei & Mikochi Series for Reddit Fantasy's 2023 Bingo Square Mundane Jobs, the protagonists are a tailor and a carpenter. This book qualifies for hard mode as it does not take place on Earth.

Chapter 20 - Underwater Rhythm [Anime Episode 9]
Chapter 20.1 - Stillness and Noise
Hakumei, Mikochi and Konju accompany Sen on the maiden voyage of her new submarine boat, Simon.
description

Chapter 20.2 - Diving Suit and Tambourine
Simon, afraid since they dove too deep, is unable to move until Conju decides a more lively song is needed to cheer Simon up and dispel his fears!
description

Chapter 21 - A Screw and a Bed [Anime OVA first part]
Stylist Jada's Egg house has collapsed after a storm! Trapped, she is saved by Iwashidono.
description
Grateful, she offers him a free Mohawk which he turns down.
description
Iwashidono offers to fix Jada's home, and they actually end up bonding over the build process to the point where he actually lets her style his hair.
description

Chapter 22 - Jam and Festival [No anime adaptation]
A stall's chef is ill, so Suzumi strong arms Mikochi into taking over the free stall in a prime location. Just a tiny catch - even after Suzumi takes care of the kettle and griddle, Mikochi only has the rest of that day to produce the food for sale from scratch! She decides to make raspberry jam, with rum and basil, to be eaten with 3 different types of bread. Reading this made me hungry.
description

Chapter 23 - A Cup Of Coffee [Anime Episode 2]
Master tells Hakumei and Mikochi tales about her master and his special coffee grinder, which Hakumei tries and fails to repair. As it turns out, the grinder is a tsukumogami (artifacts that gain a spirit after having been loved) and had decided it is time to retire.
description

Chapter 24 - The Bamboo Bath [Anime Episode 10]
Hakumei and Mikochi go to an Onsen hot springs only to find out it's closed for cleaning after a bunch of feline guests hair clogged the drains, so they decide to build their own outdoor bathtub, using bamboo. The perspective (size) in this is kind of genius.
description
It's tiny bush craft construction time but their hard work pays off in the end.
description
I mean, I wouldn't mind soaking in one of these, with floating snacks.
description

Chapter 25 - Daikon Radish and Pipe [Anime Episode 10]
Mikochi's big sister Ayune, a playwright, arrives for a surprise visit bringing with her a giant daikon radish.
description
She's not there because she misses Mikochi, rather she just dropped by unannounced thinking it's no imposition, because she needs a change of scenery to get rid of writer's block. Ayume is very entitled having had Mikochi wait on her hand and foot since childhood, because of her "talent." She demands a bed, and stewed daikon, but any help she gives just creates more work for Mikochi, classic Weaponized Incompetence style. It isn't till much later that we find out the real reason for the visit.
description

Chapter 26 - The Night Train [Anime Episode 11]
Mikochi and Hakumei take an overnight train to Lake Kanokan where they want to go fishing.
description
It's a lovely adventure - numerous stops for food and kind train staff make for a magical journey.

Life is not always easy when you are small but it can be fun

I think I mentioned this before (or maybe I just think about it from time to time) but with the appearance of an actual train in this volume, even if it looks nice, I really wonder about the perspective sizes of the world everyone lives in and possibly if the whole story is set in a far future where humans no longer exist and all of the people and creatures in the story have evolved similar to us on a whole. Considering the similarities in certain simpler technologies, skills, and customs but sized for these little people (more so than the sentient animals that they live and interact with) it is curious if they invented these things themselves just as humanity did or perhaps outside of the "woods" there is a much larger world where humanity might have left hints of who they were and the little people learned and adapted from their ways. Either way remember that large screw holding Jada's Egg Salon down in previous volumes? We find out it was part of the Great Toul Bridge that spanned the Urouga Valley long ago so it definitely feels like the world we are reading about seems to be set sometime in the future (though perhaps large animals helped build the large construct ages ago instead of humans in this world.) I guess we will have to read on to find anymore clues and to continue suspending disbelief in the mean time. :)

Anyway here is a taste of the small adventures awaiting in this volume. First we see Hakumei, Mikochi, Sen, and Conju taking a scientific journey under water but it is a big learning experience for Sen and Conju in particularly. Boss Iwashi discovers a troubled Jada and lends a hand. A festival is nearly upon everyone and Mikochi is given a stall to run at it. However sometimes things don't always work as planned. An old coffee mill is having problems and the girls discover the reason why. Hakumei's shoulders are stiff and decides she wants to go to a hot spring leading the girls to work hard if they want to relax. Mikochi's sister, Ayune, comes to visit with chaos close at hand letting us take a look into how Mikochi became who she is today. Finally the girls take a train (as I mentioned earlier) so they can find a good spot to fish. Along the way they see new things and enjoy good food/drinks. I really wish I could have seen what kind of fishes' Hakumei was going to pull out of the water considering her size and all or how she was going to fish. :)

'Hakumei & Mikochi' continues to be a delightfully domestic manga about tiny lives and quiet adventures that makes every day fulfilling as long as you're living it with friends. And I love how well-rounded all of those friends are; my favorite chapter here is the very opening one, where we get to see Sen, the quiet and focused necromancer, and Conju, the boisterous and self-absorbed singer, bouncing off each other and eventually coming to respect the other's talents. Also delightful is the closing chapter, an overnight train ride that's just Hakumei and Mikochi being together, where the manga shows off its art skills to set the mood. Really, the whole thing is absolutely worth reading immediately; go pick up all of these, because you won't regret it.

One of my favorite parts about the characters Hakumei and Mikochi is how creative and hard-working they are. In this volume, there's a chapter how they can't visit one of the public baths (because feline guests' hair clogged up the drains lol) so instead of complaining, H&M decide to make their own at-home bath. Truth be told, I was kinda jealous of how they can just adapt and figure stuff out, and then reap the lovely rewards of a hot, relaxing bath and yummy snacks, all in the comfort of their own backyard.

Hakumei and Mikochi make their own hot tub and go on a night train ride, and Mikochi's sister visits.

The art in these stories is adorable - little tiny people ("The Borrowers" size) interact with talking upright animals. But these just don't grab me. I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy reading these extremely slow slice-of-life stories.

Vraiment trop bien!!!

I don’t know why ??
