Caught in the Devil's Snare

Charli
I live in a world of silence.
Living on the streets hasn’t been easy, but my other senses have kept me safe.
That safety is soon shattered when I’m snatched off the streets and find the Devil pointing his gun at my head.
He spares my life, but that’s not where it ends.
He wants something from me, but I have no intention of giving it to him.

Devlin
She’d have been dead by my hand if it weren’t for those blazingly defiant green eyes.
She looked like any normal street-ravaged waif until I learned she’s deaf.
Call me intrigued.
Not because she can’t hear, but because she’s the most stubborn female I have ever met.
No one has ever denied me what I want…until Charli came along.
I think I want to keep her.

3.5 stars ⭐️.

It was a very compelling read. I read in some of the reviews that heroine’s stubborn, strong, independent streak annoyed them but to me it was admirable. She came out as a strong woman who knew her mind without being stupid. Hero...mmm..now that’s where the stars went down.
After meeting heroine He was intimate with a woman. But it didn’t bother me much as it usually does.
1. Because they both weren’t attracted to each other.
2. I expected that much from this book.
3. Nothing mentioned in explicit detail , it was almost written as offhandedly.

But what spoiled the story for me was, hero was involved in human trafficking and in the beginning he killed 3 women. Shot them point blank. I believe it was not necessary. He could’ve found another way to protect his organization, at least ordered his henchmen to do the deed. That scene was very off putting. Killing men was one thing but women and children, that’s altogether another matter.
The writing style was good and ending I loved. The story had some depth. The friendship between heroine and keagan was one of the plus point.

While I greatly admire Charli and her need to be independent she was entirely too preachy on her high horse. She was a dick to Devlin for most of the book and honestly I don’t know why he continued. She came across as ungrateful and sanctimonious and no matter what he did it wasn’t enough. Her being a bitch went on for too long and I think Devlin should’ve found someone else.

Look , there's a difference between being strong & independent and stupidly independent.
Unfortunately here the heroine falls in the latter category.

I got into this book because I was looking for a heroine being deaf or something , but I didn't expect an ungrateful bitch who does everything stupid in the name of "independent strong female".

The hero loved her way more than she did , 90% of the book was them living in denial , the constant '' I wanna have sex with you" , "why would he even like to date me" , "he must be looking for a casual fling" , "no we can't be more than friends" blah blah blah. I don't care , and I started skimming after 40% but even when I reached 91% of the book , they still have barely any interaction , I mean the hired bodyguard aka the heroine's best friend has way more potential of them being in a relationship than the hero and this bitch. (pfft , if only the bsf was not gay)

Anyways , whatever happens only happens in the last 5% of the book , and once we get the "I love you's" , the epilogue of five years later is shown in the name of HEA.

Oh well , the hero deserved better , or atleast someone NOT as ungrateful and pathetic the heroine was.

This was very cute, very nice, i loved the characters development however, sometimes i felt like she wasn't even deaf, i know she mentioned that it was very hard for her to read lips, but i just couldn't imagine how he was talking to her normally as if she can hear him

Dear Ms Matthews,

At the start of this book there's a note from you, hoping that we the readers can enjoy this book without the dialogue being overloaded with descriptions - you need not worry about this at all. I thoroughly enjoyed it, the book is very well written and the main characters had me invested in them from the start.

It takes a lot for a book with this narrative to stand out, but this story did. The added perspective from a deaf person's POV deserves far greater credit than words can express. Although I am not deaf I worked on an educational interactive DVD for deaf people in the UK and learnt a lot about BSL (British Sign Language) and I have huge respect for the challenges the deaf have and live with. Thank you immensely for this wonderful tale, this was the first story of yours that I've read and I'm glad I took the time to do so.

--------------------

Charli was only 18, but too old to be a ward of the system ends up on the streets fending for herself, she's had it tough her whole life so being on the streets is just another test for her and she takes it in her stride. When Charli's snatched off the street she knows her life is about to end.

Devlin Kade took over his father's "organisation" when his father died, and all he's ever known is a cold distant existence never feeling anything, never gaining attachments; He has his body guards, and associates but keeps to himself and ensures that publicly his legitimate businesses are doing well and front his organisation. When he goes to "clean up" after something goes wrong in the organisation he takes one look at the blonde woman and can't take her life, and when he finds out Charli's deaf he takes it upon himself to care for her and help her off the streets giving her a new lease on life.

Charli's not sure what Devlin Kade wants from her, she should be dead at his hand and when she's not she's confused but skeptical and extremely defensive wanting to take nothing from him, and have her freedom. The more time Charli and Devlin spend together you sense the uncertainty and the walls they build to defend themselves from each other, can they bring those emotional walls down and can they have more together? Or is Charli just too good and too innocent for Devlin and his dark side?

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I wanted more. There's definitely potential for there to be more to this story... It could have been dragged out to be three books and I'd have been a happy camper getting all the books and prolonging the HEA it was that enjoyable.

DNF at 15%. I'm sorry, but WTF? The romantic "hero" of this story is a murderous sex trafficker with no moral compass whatsoever! In the first chapter from his POV he explains how he drugs and kidnaps women to be sold as sex slaves because it is profitable, and when he finds out one of his underlings grabbed the DA's daughter and her friends, his only thought is that he is irritated because "they would have turned a nice profit" before he shoots them all in the head, after noting with no emotion that one of his men had raped one of the unconscious girls.

Seriously, this guy is a complete monster. I thought for sure this was the villain of the story, but no, apparently this is the guy we are supposed to root for. He is a complete sociopath with no soul, no morals, no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I can't fathom how this is supposed to be a romance. This author is not permanently on my Will-Never-Read-Again List.

i literally cannot get over the fact that the H deals in human trafficking and killed three innocent women for shits.

Yes i know i signed up for a mafia book but i have boundaries for my fictional mafia men too, as ridiculous as that sounds. i usually assume their criminal activities revolve around illegal arms/drug deals or gambling rings. human trafficking and the main H also killing women is too much for me. he supposedly stops human trafficking after meeting her….& like what? am I supposed to be impressed by that?

The H actually reminds me of Joe from the show “you” where the h is his obsession and he’s capable of being nice to her for a bit but he’s also psycho on the side and will probs kill her after he tires of her.

I was extremely intrigued about h being deaf and learning about it. Which I did.

Bad news is, that this book was as weak as can be on mafia story. It had some aspects which were decent and ruthless, and then it flopped into a sugar bomb. It should have been just a story of a billionaire or millionaire and then it would have been believable, but mafia aspect... Just nope.

Good news is, storyline, if removing mafia completely was pretty good and romance was sweet. H ws patient and tried to do everything right by her, which was very nice. Charli was in times way too stubborn, but having her life, I understand.

What disturbed me was words: his masculinity (meaning his cock) and same for female.. Errr.

Loved Caught in the Devil’s Snare! The characters have so much depth, and getting to them them and how they worked is what kept me riveted to this story. These two together was gold! And that ending was so good! Don’t pass this up, give it a shot.

CAUGHT IN THE DEVIL'S SNARE ; review

What I liked : I really liked this story. It was a slow burn romance, not OTT and not that dark either. Both MC were great and I loved getting to know them and see them fall for each other. I was grateful that we weren't assaulted by sex scenes and lust filled thoughts as soon as the MC meet. They take their time before finally starting to get physical with each other, and even then it's slow going and it goes perfectly with the story. The fact that the hero doesn't spend his time thinking about screwing the heroine or how nice her curves are was greatly appreciated. The author really focused more on the emotional relationship rather than the physical one, and I love that. We really get to know the MC, their background, how their mind works and who they are as people.

I feel like a lot of authors tend to focus too much on the sex, thinking that Sex is what makes a good romance, but in truth it's about emotions and taking the time to understand each other, and Dani Matthews captured that perfectly in her delightful writing.

Charli was an awesome heroine. She has been deaf since birth, grew up in the system and lived on the streets since she was 18. I loved her backbone and how she wasn't scared to stand up for herself even with a gun in her face. She was the perfect blend of independent stubbornness and sweet shyness. At no point did I feel frustrated or Unhappy with her. She wasn't OTT, dramatic or TSTL.

Devlin is a criminal, a very rich one, but a cold criminal nontheless. That is, until he meets Charli, after that he slowly starts to understand what she means to him and slowly but surely he redeems himself. Because yeah, in the beginning he was seriously controlling and stubborn, but once he understood what he did or said wrong, he was man enough to do what was necessary to earn forgiveness. He was a great character.

In the end, they were perfect for each other. Devlin was living in darkness, and Charli was the light he highly needed in his life, and couldn't be happier with how everything went in this story.

There was no OW / OM drama, no stupid fights and grand exploits. It was almost an easy going story between two people who talk things out like the civilized adults they are.

What I didn't like : Nothing to dislike.

Warnings : No triggers. Sure there was some violence but that is to be expected when reading a book that has a criminal as an MC.

Would I recommend this book?
Absolutely

Will I re-read it?
Possibly yes.

Will I read anything else from this author?
If another one of Dani Matthew's books grips my attention I'll definetely read it. It is my first book by this author and it was fully satisfying.

“I’ve spent my entire life trying to find something good in the worst of situations, and yet Devlin’s lived in that darkness with nothing to help ease him out of it.”

I have mixed feelings about this book. Some aspects of the story I really enjoyed; yet the aspects that I didn’t enjoy really brought my opinion of the story down.

What I liked
Keagan. Heroine remaining steadfast in her principles. Hero lovey-dovey over heroine.

What I didn’t like
The hero at the beginning of the story; actions and behavior didn’t really seem cohesive with his character. Human trafficking. The mafia mystery/suspense was alluded to throughout the story, but the resolution felt rather dull. The romance was jerky, feelings seemed to develop randomly. The side characters felt underutilized. The heroine’s mystical healing; she roused from the drugs she was given well before the other girls abducted and she was crushed under a collapsed ceiling—which was heavy enough to suffocate her—and ended up with no injuries.

“I have a feeling that Charli just might be the downfall I’ve spent my entire life running from.”

A delightful surprise to be presented to this book and author.
Starting with the cover, which caught my attention, then the blurb, which brings a deaf female character.
But the reader is fooled into thinking that Charli, our female main character, is a fragile girl.
Born deaf because of her mother's excesses with drugs, Charli was abandoned one week afetr being born.
She went through several foster care and was humiliated in many ways, but she never lost her will to win.
When she left Philadelphia and went to NY, she had a desire to have a better life. Unfortunately, a new wave of misfortune reached her until it reaches the maximum: Charli found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnessed a murder.
She barely knew that that day would change her life...

And then we have Devlin Kade.
Successful businessman, hotel owner and security company, but who maintains the illicit activities of his father that include drug and human trafficking.
That night, when he killed three people - which to Devlin was routine - he did not imagine he would stand in front of a woman who showed no fear of his weapon.
Upon discovering Charli's condition (deaf and homeless), Dev felt the (strange) urge to want to protect her.
Once again Charli surprised him by not accepting his help easily.
And in the clash between two tormented and difficult souls, an unexpected bond was created for both.

The plot is dark, but Dani was able to capture the essence of the characters in a way that does not weigh the words.
There is romance. I love the ending.

I certainly want to know more about this author's works.

I really enjoyed this book. The author takes another path from the normal mafia kidnapping approach. Usually the hero sees the girl and must have her with him 100% of the time and in his house. I won't share spoilers but he still wants to be around her but understands her needs for space and time.

I love when authors write about H/h that are different from the normal. And we get that with Charli being deaf. She is a strong female lead character and I loved her attitude. Both characters grow in this book and it isn't overnight. Which makes it seem real. Devlin (the hero) is hands down one of my favorite bad guys. I won't go into details because it will still some of the joy of reading it first hand. However I will say that he never mistreats Charli or forces himself on her physically.

The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the amount of internal dialog. Most of this book was of Charli's thoughts about the same things. I did a lot of skimming when it was just her thinking. When the characters interacted it was great and that is the reason for a 4 star review from me.

The book takes place in NYC. There isn't a whole lot of the mafia talked about in this book. I wouldn't consider it a dark read. The book is told from both POV but we get a lot more of Charli than Devlin. I was happily surprised that they were not a lot of grammatical errors in the book. When reading in kindle unlimited you can run across books that are in serious need of an editor. This is not that case here.

Outstanding and unique mafia romance- well worth a read!

This book was absolutely beautiful! I love mafia romance, and Caught in the Devil’s Snare went well beyond the normal subject matter (tough mafioso/innocent girl he dominates) to deliver a deeply moving romance between Devlin and Charli.

From the gate, we see the darkness of Devlin. He’s not a good man, and some of his actions in the beginning were hard to swallow. What I loved most is that as the story evolves, so does Devlin in a realistic and moving way. Sometimes it’s a bit of a stretch to see how the hot, dangerous, and powerful man quickly changes once his love interest is introduced. Not this time. I found Devlin’s character development to be believable. It gave me all the feels.

Charli is an awesome character. She is deaf and homeless when she meets Devlin. I was relieved to see that her deafness wasn’t fetishized or glossed over. It was an integral part of her identity and perspective, as was her experience of being raised in the foster system. Charli is definitely no easy conquest and doesn’t yield to Devlin’s charms. Often I find this quality to be a bit contrived, but not in Devil’s Snare. Charlie’s actions align with her character development and she is a believable and sympathetic heroine. I loved her and I loved the heat and affection between her and Devlin.

This was my first read from this author. I definitely will be checking out her other books. I highly recommend this one!

A homeless girl finds a knight in shining armor in his tale, though it's all a little twisted, since the knight is the leading crime boss for NYC.

Matthews is a new author to me, and she was a recommendation from an online book club I am apart of. I tend to enjoy the controlling, dominant male leads and Devlin was a good compromise. He was just dominating enough that it was enjoyable and not abusive.

Charli was a strong willed and motivated character, though a tad young. I would have preferred she was more than just barely legal. I liked her character well enough despite her age. She was a more mature 18 year old.

The whole scenario was a bit far fetched, but I appreciated that the author wrote about a deaf woman. It added something to her character. It was my first time reading a book where the main character was deaf. I thought the author incorporated it well, without leaving the reader feeling like they were missing something.

The romance took a while to build, which is always the best part. It was a steamy tale and I felt the attraction.

If you are looking for a stand-alone, sexy read then this might be the story for you. You can find the tale on Amazon in Kindle format for 99 cents.

I felt my 99 cents was well-spent.

It was a new author for me, one of my let's take a chance on this book buys, and it shot all its way to my keepers' list.

Devlin's is all that you expect of a anti-hero. Cold, calculating and ruthless. Charli ends up in his path in the most unfortunate circonstances. By all means, the story should have stopped there.

But Charli is deaf, and it gives Devlin the opportunity to second guess his decision and spare her life, and explore why he felt compelled to do so.

The story is packed with action, the plot moving fast. Devlin and Charli rise to each other's challenges. Their interactions are explosive, the budding relationship and how none of them just knuckles under the ideas/ want of the other one, but they instead really build something is adorable.

I guess what I loved most is Ms Matthews' treatment of Charli's deafness. In my opinion, this is difference in a romance done right. It's not a plot device, not inspiration p*rn, but something integral to her personality, even actually the reason the whole story happens.

Now I have to go look through Ms Matthews' backlist while hoping for a sequel... I'm sure some of the secondary characters are sequel worthy!

Great book

This was a really great book. I wasn't sure what to expect but the preview Drew me in and i had to read it. Charli is deaf and homeless, she's been living on the streets since she turned18 and was done with foster care. She meets Devlin under unusual circumstances and he's immediately drawn to her though he doesn't know why. Their story is very different. Charli geeks she had to prove to everyone she can make it on her own but fails to realize they don't pity her they want to help her. Devlin never knew love or emotions. Having grown up with nannies and a mob boss for a father he was taught to hide all emotions and feelings so he struggles. He also takes what he wants and nobody ever defies him so when Charli comes into his life he has to learn how to deal with his emotions and let her keep her independence. This was an amazing book that i couldn't put down once i started it. The characters were so well written and i immediately connected with them. This story will definitely stay with me and I'll be keeping an eye on this author. I love her writing!

I enjoyed this story up to about the 60% mark. The h's determination to be independent was great but eventually her stubbornness was frustrating and she was still fighting the H about EVERYTHING. She knew what he was the very first minute they met so there shouldn't have been any surprise that violence was involved and that it was a very real threat, at first to her and then because of her association with H. It's NYC, and even if he wasn't head of a crime syndicate, he's still massively wealthy and that alone comes with it's own dangers. Street/life smart she was not.

I liked the H a lot and could connect with him more than the h. His reasoning and actions made sense and really, he was pretty reasonable with the h and after their first encounter he follows her lead.

This would have been 4 stars for me but I was skimming too much in the back half. It's a light mafia/crime story with little angst. The author has talent and can write and I'll definitely check out her other books.

I love books where the main character is disabled. In this one Charli was deaf. Born deaf, has never heard. She hasn't had an easy life and she thinks she has to fight for everything she's got. Devlin is ruthless. He was born in the mafia and has never known love or kindness. He's unexpectedly captivated by Charli's will to live as she fights a losing battle against him and his men when captured.

I really enjoyed this story, although I felt like there could have been more. More of a sub plot, or more details into Devlin's life... I'm not sure exactly what I felt was missing, but it seemed like a very basic story, that could have been one of my favorites if there was just more to it. That being said, I still really liked it, it was a quick story that sucked me in from the beginning.

Really good book!!

I felt the author handled Charli’s deafness very well. I loved how she stood up to Devlin. She’s feisty, stubborn and determined. She was very mature for only being 18 years old.

Devlin was controlling, protective and savvy. He was tough and ruthless with everyone but not Charli. It was beautiful watching how he controlled all aspects of his life but Charli was able to make him see she wasn’t a possession. There were some swoon moments, hot sexy moments and some tender moments.

This was a well rounded romance book and I really enjoyed it. I give it two thumbs up!!

Right from the beginning of the book I couldn’t figure out how this author would be able to redeem the MC for me after his opening actions. Then I had another ironic moment when he indicated he wasn’t the type to hit a woman. What? Was he not in the warehouse in the previous scene? The book really wasn’t dark but after that opening, his back story just didn’t make up for it. What I did like about this book was reading about Charli and how she dealt with being deaf. While she was a stubborn character, I thought she was interesting and I liked her story. The writing was good and the plot was interesting, but the aspects of his business dealings were a no go for me.

The devil made me do it

I'm glad I took a chance on this book. The gorgeous cover is what I noticed first. Charli is deaf and homeless. She's also tough and stubborn as a mule. She's caught the attention of Devlin and can't decide if it's a good thing or not. Devlin is an interesting character. He's as bad as bad can get but he has so many layers. I liked how he tried on so many different levels to get to know Charli. I lost a lot of sleep because I had to see what happens next. If you like scary alpha males with a hidden heart then this is for you.

Decent story

SPOILERS!!!

I thought the book started off pretty strong. I thought, wow, this is much grittier than I thought it would be. I like it. Lol. But then it just kinda fell flat for me. In regards to Devlin and the way he treated Charli- the man who had no qualms about human trafficking and blowing out the brains of 3 young innocent girls, becomes the most patient, perfect, understanding man. A little too far fetched in my opinion. And Charli was just too perfect, with her morals and high grounds. All in all though, the author herself seems like a good writer.

Fascinating life of a young woman with a disability

So Devlin and Charli have a rough beginning.
Charli is determined to be completely independent and Devlin greatly wants to protect N take care of her.
Slowly the pair learn to give and take as they become friends then more.
Someone trys to harm Charli and decisions need to be made...

I found this story was believable and had good flow. I've actually now just read it a second time.

The writer is good. Although female character is young in age the writer gives her a maturiy thru out the book. It also felt at times on the younger side . Overall the book had a good story line and good ending .

This is my first book from this aurthor. I would recommend this book as a start. Thanks to the author.
