EngiNerds #2

Revenge of the EngiNerds

Rate this book
Ken and his EngiNerds crew return in a new, nutty and nerdy adventure that’s the perfect follow-up to EngiNerds .

When last we met, the EngiNerds were battling a horde of ravenous robots, but in this latest caper, they’re on the hunt for just one rogue robot. But who knows what kind of mayhem one mechanical creature can cause? And why is Ken the only EngiNerd who’s worried about the runaway robot?

The rest of the crew seems be missing in action and Ken fears it's because of Mikaela Harrington. She's the new girl in town who’s UFO and alien-obsessed and wants to join the EngiNerds. But as far as Ken is concerned, the EngiNerds are Y-chromosome only, no X’s allowed!

Will Ken allow a rogue robot and a know-it-all, genius girl to wreak havoc on the entire universe? He just might not have a choice!

I really enjoyed this book! I have been hearing of this series on social media, but had yet to read one! My students in grade 3 would love this book. I will definitely be buying both books in the series for my library when funds become available. I am also thinking they would love it as a read aloud! Thank you #netgalley for the ARC.

A huge thank you to the author for sending me a copy of his Feb 2019 release, REVENGE OF THE ENGINERDS.

In this sequel to ENGINERDS, Ken and his buddies are trying to track down a runaway robot, but new disturbance in the nerd force (named Mikaela) is causing friction. Ken struggles with feeling on the outside of the nerds as they band together to focus on a different problem, but can they all find a way to come together before disaster strikes?
.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and appreciate its humour, while also seeing real depth to it. I think Mikaela is an excellent addition to the nerds, and will help the book appeal to an even wider audience. The short chapters are wonderful for readers building confidence, and I believe this book will be another hit! Kids who loved the first book are definitely going to need this one as well, and I’m anxious to add it to my collection.
.
Let’s be serious, I’m not objective about this book because of my high regard for the author 😉, so you’ll just have to pick this one up in February and judge for yourself.

Thanks Kidlit Exchange and Simon Kids for the Advance Review Copy. All opinions are my own, but I have extremely sophisticated taste in books, so you want to listen to me.

There’s a snarky butt-blasting robot on the loose who could fart someone to smithereens and probably get its creators grounded forever. Don’t you just hate when that happens?

Worse, main character Ken and his friends, the Enginerds, are to blame. Enginerd Dan built Robot Number Eighteen, and Ken’s best friend Mike Edsley (the stupidest genius ever to live) let him leave the house in a rage during an argument over a sandwich.

The guys could care less that their town’s been pelted by its second bizzard in a week (a stretch for springtime, even in New England). The Enginerds, save Ken, are all way too preoccupied with a newcomer who’s obsessed with aliens and conspiracy theories.

It’s not just enough that their new friend is weird… it’s..

Gulp…

A GIRL.

So forget the robots. The guys are all obsessed with building gadgets to make contact with the aliens that *must* be out there. Who cares if Klaus destroys the city in a fart rampage? Michaela’s really pretty, and Ken’s really disgusted.

Ken is able to track down Number Eighteen (now going by Klaus and working at one of the local junk shops). If only Ken can dismantle Klaus, he can bring the world back to normal… right?

I don’t do spoiler alerts, but the climax is a fabulous high-stakes food fight with a farting robot and a tenuous friend reunion. Hold the radishes.*

“Cross me once, shame on you. Cross me twice, I FART ON YOU.”

Loved:

I was geeking out over the awesomely bizarre secondary characters. Ken has a dog named Kitty who has an all-time favorite dirty sock. Klaus the robot shoots square poop out of his butt when he farts. REVENGE OF THE ENGINERDS is pure comedic gold.
Lerner nails the hilariosly geeky/awkward nature of preteen boys; dynamics of irritating friends’ siblings, and crabby kid-hating adults.
Between all the turd missiles, dumpster-diving dogs, and robot butt-blasts Ken does learn some pretty (sneakily-planted) lessons about personal responsibility and friendship.
Caveat: REVENGE OF THE ENGINERDS is second in a series (Which is a great thing! I’m looking forward to the farting aliens in what I presume will he the third book.) However, because I didn’t read the prequel, Enginerds, *yet*, it was tough to get oriented at the beginning due to complex backstory and Ken’s large and weird friend group.

TL;DR? Buy *both* ENGINERDS and REVENGE OF THE ENGINERDS and revel in the Douglas Adams x Captain Underpants glory. Problem solved.

Give to:

Fans of Captain Underpants, Wimpy Kid, and Jonathan Rosen.
Short chapters make for fast read by reluctant readers; kids who prefer science to reading; kids needing the confidence to jump from chapter books to MG.
Whatever you do, be prepared for an afternoon of jokes about robot farts.
REVENGE OF THE ENGINERDS blasts onto bookshelves tomorrow, Feb 19.

Thank you @kidlitexchange and Jarrett Lerner for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own. Revenge of the Enginerds releases on February 19, 2019 by Simon kids.
Ken, Edsley, Dan and the other Enginerds are back and are trying to locate the last of the robots that Dan created. So far, none of their plans to find the robot have been successful. Meanwhile a girl, Mikaela, has intruded upon the Enginerds, bringing her suitcase full of gadgets and theories of alien activity! While most of the other guys are interested in Mikaela and her gadgets, Ken wants no part of listening to a girl. SInce the other guys are distracted, Ken and Edsley continue their search for the missing bot, finally finding him and devising a plan to take him down. Slowly, Ken begins to realize that maybe Mikaela isn’t so bad, and that she is actually pretty smart! The Enginerds end up coming together to defeat the last robot and his butt-blasting, when all of a sudden something (and someone) appears from out of the clouds….
And we are left with another cliffhanger!
I love the Enginerds series! I find the short chapters very engaging and make the book move quickly. (This is a big plus for some of my reluctant readers.) There is a lot of action, and the Enginerds are very clever with their plans! I really enjoy the fact that the books are written from Ken’s point of view, and I think this makes the story so relatable for kids! I’m so glad a girl was introduced in this story, and I love how Ken’s opinion of Mikaela changes throughout the story. I enjoyed how Edsley had more of a role in this story, and while he seems to be goofy and have little common sense, he takes charge in the battle with the last robot. I personally love the relationship that Ken has with his grandfather, as I was very close to my grandfather. I love the fact that he can understand his “clicks” even though he is unable to speak.
We have another winner from Jarret Lerner! I can’t wait to get Revenge of the Enginerds for my class!

Thank you to the author for sharing an ARC with #collabookation.
Revenge of the Enginerds picks up right where Enginerds left off - and, as is the case with any great sequel, you can start with Revenge and be just fine. But why would you not read Enginerds first?
Revenge of the Enginerds finds Ken and his pack of nerdy friends tracking down the last farting robot they accidentally-on-purpose set free in their town.
But Ken suddenly notices that he is on the outs. The rest of his crew just isn't as concerned with the robot as they are with the new, very wacky weather patterns in their town. And there's another point (person) of contention: Mikaela Harrington.
What I loved most was how Ken was forced to make a choice: he must either keep doing what he's doing, same as always, and lost his group of friends, or he must take a good look at his actions and figure out what has been driving his friends away.
I was thrilled when he chose the latter. Ken examines his behavior and attitude, and realizes he's been a little bit close-minded about certain things. Specifically, the people with whom he has some personality conflicts. I love any book with a male protagonist who is introspective and thoughtful, but I have to say that this might be the first mg book I've read where he explicitly uncovers his own faults, and then tries to remedy them. It was my favorite thread of the book, and that's saying something when there are farting robots to track down!
I highly recommend both Enginerds and Revenge of the Enginerds to kids in grades four and up.

The Enginerds are back! I loved meeting this group of middle school boys, who have been friends since kindergarten, who share a love of science and inventions and who agreed they should absolutely NEVER eat lunch in the cafeteria in Enginerds. In that book, they sent the 18 robots they invented out into the world, with disastrous results. Luckily, they captured 17 of them, but what about number 18? And since it’s been gone, VERY strange things have been happening.

Book 2 finds the Enginerds trying their best to solve their problem. Then during a lunchtime brainstorming session on how to capture their missing invention, an even stranger thing happens. A GIRL barges into their meeting and instantly convinces most of the Enginerds that aliens are coming to their town!

This story will have kids of all ages laughing out loud. The humor, along with the short chapters (sometimes just one or two pages) make it perfect for a reluctant reader, but the plot will keep everyone enthralled. It’s a great bedtime story to share with your family.

Also, I am so glad a girl has joined the team. Her gadgets and ingenuity added a lot to the story, as she showed everyone that even girls could be enginerds!

This book will be available 2.19.19. Be sure and order it now! You’ll be so glad you did!

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this sequel, and it was even better than expected! Ken and the Enginerds are back, still trying to find the last rogue robot, and also dealing with an even bigger mystery - a girl! Mikaela is a gadget-toting, UFO-chasing distraction that threatens all of Ken’s plans. Will Ken and the others find the missing robot before its powerful farts destroy the town, and will their friendships survive this adventure? Read to find out, and be prepared for another cliffhanger!
I laughed at the crazy hijinks and wild (but creative) plans the Enginerds devised to find and stop their wild robot. I also appreciated Ken’s self-reflection about his personal frustrations and feelings. It was enough for kids to relate to and give the reader a chance to breathe, and also took the story just a little deeper.
In other words, this book has it all: fun, kid-humor, clever and concise writing, a plot that keeps moving, and even some emotional character development! My third graders will eat this book up, and I can’t wait to share it with them!

A farting robot on the loose... what could possibly go wrong? As it turns out, a lot! In this follow-up to the hilarious EngiNerds, our favorite nerd heroes are back, and Robot 18 (now going by "Klaus") is still out there... somewhere, undoubtedly wreaking havoc. Only problem is, the nerd gang (except for Ken) is more interested in the new girl -- gadget-loving, alien obsessed and EngiNerd hopeful Mikaela -- than in tracking down the runaway robot. Suddenly, Ken finds himself on the outside.

This book, it probably goes without saying, was laugh-out-loud funny. Kids will love the gadgets, science (and of course, robot farts and that food fight!). But what I particularly loved (and I think will resonate so well with readers) is the underlying themes about friendship, and how difficult it can be to navigate shifting friend dynamics at this age. Also, yay for the addition of Mikaela -- a confident, smart, girl EngiNerd!

Highly recommend!

Thank you to author Jarrett Lerner for offering our #bookexpedition reading group a chance to read an ARC of this sequel.

Revenge of the EngiNerds picks up right where EngiNerds ended. There’s a rogue robot on the loose, but Ken’s the only nerd who seems really concerned. The others Nerds are too busy hanging out with Mikaela Harrington, the UFO obsessed new girl who’s got the coolest gadgets & gizmos to share!

I loved getting into Ken’s head in this sequel. He’s very much feeling jealous towards the new girl and left out of his friend group. His sarcasm & stubbornness shine brightly in book 2, and I think middle grade readers will be able to connect to these feelings.

Also loved that book 2 ends on a cliffhanger, so really hoping Ken & the Nerds are back for a third installment. Pubs in February 2019, and I’ve already preordered a copy for my classroom!

Note: I received an ARC via the author and a book sharing group, Book Portage, in exchange for my honest review. The book is now available for purchase.

Revenge of the EngiNerds is the entertaining sequel to Jarrett Lerner's EngiNerds, which concluded with one rogue farting robot MIA. The EngiNerds should be looking for said robot, but only Ken and Edsley seem to be concerned about its whereabouts while the rest of the EngiNerds are distracted by Mikaela, her gadgets, and her talk of aliens.

The short, cliff-hanger chapters make Revenge of the EngiNerds an accessible beginning middle grade novel and the zany plot line will keep the target audience engaged. I recommend both EngiNerd books for libraries serving children in grades 3-6 and hope that there will be a third in the series in the future!

This fantastic follow-up to Jarrett Lerner's "EngiNerds" tells the story of a group of middle school boys whose intellect and geekdom have banded them together. At the end of the first book, we were left hanging, wondering where the last rogue, food-farting robot had wandered off. Now, it's been days since anyone has seen him. The EngiNerds group is divided: do they continue looking, or assume he's gone forever? They become even more divided when a new interloper begins invading their lunchtime gatherings and has a different agenda.

This story will be a big hit with kids in grades 3-6, especially with reluctant readers (it's quite hilarious!).

Thank you to netgalley for an early peek.

What a wonderful sequel! I loved Revenge of the EngiNerds so much! Ken and his friends are back, and they still have a mess to clean up. One of the robots is still at large, and if they can't disable it, well, who knows what will happen. Ken needs all the EngiNerds to rally, but they seem distracted by a - wait for it - girl. And she's convinced aliens are attacking the town. As Ken competes with Mikaela for supremacy, things are going from bad to worse. Can they come together to defeat the evil robot? Or is there an even great danger. Great fun and full of quirky humour. Kids will love this!

There is so much to love about the follow-up to ENGINERDS: farting robots, a sock-loving dog, a smart new female friend who throws off the dynamics of the group, gadgets, tons of jokes, the overall question of where that last robot went and super-charged by the idea that perhaps the missing robot isn't the only mystery in town.
Also, it's just plain funny, action packed, and the short chapters make this a perfect early middle grade book for even the most reluctant reader. The theme of friendship is treated with care and reverence too - not an easy task given all the fun noted above!

If Goosebumps merged with Frank Einstein, you might get something like Revenge of the EngiNerds. To me, this story read like a Goosebumps book, fun relationships between young boys that go on an adventure and come across a monster, I mean a young girl who is smart, and try to capture the last remaining monster from the previous story. Such a cliff-hanger at the end? Robots, girls and aliens!?!? Will they capture the robot? It’s all up in the air!

The Enginerds are back in this sequel by talented author/illustrator Jarrett Lerner. Ken and his buddies are trying to track down the last remaining rogue robot when new nerd joins the group. Mikaela is trying to convince the group she’s seen a UFO. With his impeccable sense of humor Jarrett brings us along for another hilarious adventure! Middle graders are going to love it, and watch out for the ending!

I'm not normally a sequel person, but I actually liked this one a little better than the first. I totally get that the intended audience for this book (and the first one) will enjoy the fact that the robots shoot compacted food cubes out of their rear-ends, but I liked that this book had more character relationship development, good friendship lessons, and introduced a girl to the series. It also left things wide open for another book.

I loved EngiNerds, so my expectations were running high when I ordered Revenge of The EngiNerds. I am happy to report that Jarrett Lerner does not disappoint. The story is jam-packed full of humor that had me laughing out loud. I mean seriously, who doesn't love a farting robot. I also appreciated Ken's struggles with his friends. As the mother of an 11-year-old boy, it felt very authentic. I think kids will relate. Revenge of The EngiNerds should be in the hands of every middle grade reader!

I am a little late in finishing this, but I enjoyed the read. It's funny and silly, as you might expect, but there are also some really thoughtful themes of friendship and overcoming prejudice. I will definitely be adding this to my collection, although the cliffhanger ending may leave some readers frustrated.

I really enjoyed the book. The main character has good depth to him. He shares his internal struggles with the changing friend dynamics & the crazy external factors. In the beginning of Chapter 21 there is a 3 sentence description on how he’s feeling that is great! It’s a fun story. The cliffhanger ending really got me!

Personally both of these books were just a drag to read. I don’t know why but the first was boring and confusing. The second book was more enjoyable than the first and it has a cliffhanger which I really don’t like but there was more action and it started being enjoyable to read. I think it a great improvement from the first.
