The epic start of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ first comic book crossover event: Shattered Grid!
FOREVER RANGERS.
After Lord Drakkon escapes from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, he sets his sights on one goal: conquering Power Rangers across all eras. From Time Force to RPM, no Ranger is safe as Drakkon’s conquest causes the Morphin Grid to shatter, jeopardizing all of existence. But it’s this very act that might give the Rangers a fighting chance against Lord Drakkon and his armies.
Writer Kyle Higgins (Nightwing) and artist Daniele DiNicuolo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink) raise the stakes as Rangers from across time and space band together to save the universe in this first installment of the critically acclaimed event, Shattered Grid.
Right off the bat we have the evil Green Ranger from a different reality planning the ultimate victory. After the betrayal of a certain someone last volume the Green Ranger has the idea to take over everything. Not just one universe, but all. He begins to take different ranger powers from different universes to be the ultimate villain for everyone. You now have all the power rangers from different universes working together to try and stop him.
It's both exciting and interesting. To learn the deeper mythos of DC is a ton of fun and I also thought some deaths were a huge surprise. The art remains solid and you have a ton of great fight scenes on top of shocking moments. This is probably one of the best volumes of the series. I'm hoping it keeps good. A 4 out of 5.
It's SHATTERED GRID time! I'm reading both ongoing BOOM! Power Rangers comic series as they are released in trade paperbacks so this means I'm a few months behind on the stories. I somewhat keep up with big reveals via social media. And I did read the first issue of Shattered Grid (MIghty Morphin Power Rangers #25) the day it came out since it was such a huge event. So I was super excited to get Volume 7 in the mail this week!
This story is what all of the Kyle Higgins comics have been leading up to. Lord Drakkon is back and he's fractured the Morphin Grid. The cameos in this volume are so great! There's representation from pretty much every past Power Rangers team. I really liked how some background context was given for the rangers that had more focus like Lauren Shiba (Super Samurai) and Karone (Lost Galaxy). Doctor K from RPM also has a big focus. The domed city of Corinth is the stage for some epic battles.
Higgins continues to do an excellent job of taking these characters' story arcs from the cheesy tv show and made them more real and emotional. Saba as an actual character and not just a talking sword is wonderful! Also, Ninjor! The relationships between characters is the real heart of these stories. Some of my favorite interactions included Grace and Jason as well as Jason and Lauren. Also, Skull from the Coinless Dimension!
The imagery in this volume is beautiful. I love seeing all the different ranger suits fighting alongside. And the designs for Drakkon's sentries are so great. I love seeing them appear on my social media in the form of cosplay, fanart, and homemade action figures.
At the end of this volume, the Blue Senturion's story continues. It's an okay short. It isn't quite as comedic as the Bulk & Skull or Baboo & Squatt shorts, but it has some cool references. And it looks like Ninjor will be joining the robot cop form the future in the next volume.
give this volume a 5/5. If you're reading this, you probably are at least familiar with these comics. If you're missing out on Shattered Grid, you're missing out on one of the best stories ever told in the Power Rangers canon. These are the best versions of these characters, in my opinion.
This would have been 5 stars but there were some parts that got really confusing for me. I do not have much of a background with this franchise prior to reading these comics. I loved the first 2 issues and all the stuff with Tommy. If became a bit chaotic once all the time travel and alternate timelines/and dimensions came into the picture. We also get a side story that isn't totally painful to read.
Shattered Grid is basically Kyle Higgins' magnum opus on Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, the story he's been building to since the series began and it definitely shows. All of the plot threads, all of the focus he's placed on Tommy, everything he's put in place with the characters comes to an explosive head.
The scale of this story is something unto a (good) Marvel event, pulling in Rangers from across the history of the franchise as Lord Drakkon's plan comes to fruition in a multiversal adventure that keeps the focus firmly on the Mighty Morphin' squad at its heart. With more than a few twists and turns, and one gut-punch of a cliffhanger for the first issue of the series, Shattered Grid is a rollercoaster ride right from the off, and it leaves an indelible mark on the history of the Power Rangers even as the conclusion of the story springboards a whole new direction for the book in Beyond The Grid.
On art we have Daniele Di Nicolo, who steps in as series artist after Hendry Prasetya's departure. Di Nicolo isn't as individual an artist, but she handles the intense fight scenes and massive crowd shots without missing a beat, and most of all she got all these issues out on time (or with only a week or so's delay), which is a godsend when it comes to event comics, so I'm not complaining at all.
Shattered Grid is everything you'd want it to be and more - take note, future Power Rangers writers, this is how you do a Rangers event.
My nerd freak out for this might have been stronger than Infinity War...
2nd read: Still loved it. See my notes for play-by-play spoilery reaction type stuff. Basically we get a bunch of PR teams throughout history uniting to fight an evil Tommy.
“Ouch, my leg! My … my feelings!” Wow I mean I should’ve guessed this would be a tough one based on the cover art, but wow! I did not expect to be in tears! My feelings! (Tommy!! Saba!! Alt Zack!! You’re killing me here!!) And the writing! Literally incredible! Like I am in shock and awe. I was literally shaking from how invested I was reading this. And the art was just stunning. I mean STUNNING. The face expressions and the composition and the coloring! The coloring! I absolutely adored how each universe had a slightly different color palette so that we could switch between the storylines in each without confusion. This one was just so good, oh my word. I am so emotionally invested in these characters, you don’t even know. Honestly, this volume might be the best one yet. I can’t stop thinking about it. Billy continues to be a fave. Tommy, bless you, love you, I’m devastated rn. Kim, Jason, Zack, Trini, Jen, alt Trini, alt Zack, alt Skull, y’all are amazing, keep doing what you’re doing, bless you, love you, please be safe, I’m so invested, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! 10/10 I also HATE how well Drakkon is designed and written. Like what do you mean you have such a horrible negative view of yourself (even alt versions of yourself - “they too hold their ‘Tommy’ on a pedestal. For no reason I can discern.” “Perhaps it’s love.” “There’s nothing to love about him. It doesn’t make any sense.” “Well. Love, my lord, often doesn’t.”) that your constant striving to prove that you’re a worthy man makes so much sense? What do you mean you’re a fascinating villain who seems to feel nothing and just takes and takes and takes with no regard toward the chaos you’re creating in the universe? What do you mean your outfits are amazing?? It’s not fair. Every time Drakkon gets an outfit power-up I am literally forced to acknowledge that his outfits do slay. He’s totally insane and he’s eating this up and I hate him for it. All of that to say, I need to read more of this series asap
You might as well retitle this volume "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Infinity War".
It's the crisis crossover this franchise desperately needs. So many teams are represented here, from Time Force and RPM to Megaforce and Samurai, and they're all given equal care and respect. The approach to time travel, and the portrayal of the powers themselves, solidifies the notion that every Ranger team is on equal footing. Even moreso than 'Soul of the Dragon', this arc is a love-letter to the fans.
I'm pretty sure this is ONLY for the fans...but at this point, both this and the 'Go Go' line, as well as the one-off graphic novels, have proven that Power Rangers can be for its teeny little fandom and still sell. I've dabbled in Marvel and DC, but I've never been able to get every single continuity nod. Being able to here, right down to hearing actors' voices from my college years, is nothing short of special.
I discussed with my girlfriend how the properties I've remained invested in over my life have grown with me, ie. Digimon to Digimon Tri, Dragonball Z to Dragonball Super, Pokemon Red and Blue to Pokemon Shield and Sword. What the Power Rangers franchise has done here is a masterclass on rebranding and growing up with fans.
...And hell, I haven't even gotten to read the conclusion of this story yet!
Shattered Grid is such a good culminating event for a series run, doing so much to appeal to fans from MANY eras of the Power Rangers while not feeling like some gawky multi-title crossover event that gets bogged down with too many extraneous storylines. The only weak part here is the additional Blue Senturion comic at the end, which just isn’t all that interesting. While part of me wishes this series would slow down a bit, I can see the benefit of the sort of breakneck plot playing out between Lord Drakkon and the core rangers.
This big crossover event in the Power Ranger world starts with a muddled whimper. Lord Drakkon has set out to conquer all Power Rangers from every universe but the reasons for this are unclear. I'm not a big enough fan of the Power Rangers to know about all these other Rangers so a lot was new to me and nothing explained well. There is a shocking moment but I'd be amazed if it sticks. The art by Daniele Di Nicuolo was very though. I liked her more stylized faces. Overall, this book was overdone with too much happening and not enough explanation.
a good start to this event, the drama is good, the treat is intimidating, and, seeing other rangers is an extremely fun change of pace, not to mention the art from Daniele Di Nicuolo is simply fantastic, every page is spectacular, he isn't one of my favorite comic artists working at the industry for no reason, the art changed really helped sell the epicness of the event, but at the end of the day it's still not the best the series has offered, even if having a fun event is a nice change of pace
Trucking right on through this fantastic series and it is still such a great read! We've now moved on to the first crossover event in the comic's history, the Shattered Grid event starring the ever popular and evil, Lord Drakkon. I loved this volume and am looking forward to reading the next and seeing how it concludes!
Shattered Grid is nothing special imo. Especially if it doesn't elicit a strong emotional reaction simply seeing the other ranger teams. They didn't make me care about the other ranger teams, so you have to already care about them from watching their shows, which I did not do.
From a traumatic turn-of-events to the introduction of a multiversal occurrence, this volume is packed with so many shining moments for a variety of characters. This was just a really well done volume for Higgins' Rangers.
I expect this to be a popular check-out in my elementary library, as most graphic novels. Grade 4 reading level. I specifically like the action and the way the people are portrayed.
Kyle Higgins surprisingly solid run on Power Rangers comes to its climax with a Crisis On Infinite Earths style crossover that, while epic, is as equally confusing as the DC event that inspired it.
The stakes are raised in this volume. Tommy is killed and Drakkon is starting his assault on the multiple timelines of different ranger teams. The team has little time to grieve the loss of their teammate before they are called to duty again. This time they are joined by other rangers across the timeline to mount an assault against Drakkon’s forces which seem unstoppable.
