This “Ready-to-Read: Pre-level One” text is full of playful pigs and easy reading. The book follows a group of pigs through their day as they plan and participate in a picnic. Many of the lines rhyme and there is at least one allusion to another book in the “Ready-to-Read” collection.
My first grader was engaged in his first reading of this book, but wasn’t interested in picking it up for a second read. I think this speaks to the easily decoded language and pictures for which a second reading won’t offer much new information than the first. Simple and uncomplicated is exactly what many new readers need.
So the illustrations in this book are pretty good, but it was a really short story. There are 1 to 2 sentences per page and 2 or 3 words per sentence. So I was able to read it is about 2 minutes. If you want something to sit down and read for a little while than this is not the book for you. But it would be a good book for a kid who is just learning to read.
