Every page of this 90-day-devotional points the reader back to Jesus and reminds us of His healing and redemptive power. That is the first thing I look for when I read a book by a Christian author and Mary does not disappoint.
I appreciate her expository teaching from both the Old and New Testaments. Not once have I read verses taken out of context or meaning changed to fit the narrative. Rather, Mary seeks Scripture and teaches her readers truth directly from its pages. The devotionals are sequenced in order through the Scripture so you see the Lord as Healer throughout.
Fear is an unavoidable side effect of the painful experiences of our lives. Sometimes fear overwhelmed me, especially the next 3 times I was expecting. Each of those pregnancies went to full term, and I have 3 beautiful daughters ages 13, 11, and 9. I falsely assumed that with each pregnancy the fear of miscarriage would lessen. Instead it became worse. I think is because while I accepted God's sovereignty, I didn't realize I still had deep emotional wounds I had not worked through yet. A daily journey with the Lord such as this one would have been an incredible help for me and even now as I read through it I am experiencing emotional healing from more recent difficulties.
Whether you have experienced loss, abuse, a chronic diagnosis, abandonment, or so much more the words in these pages will help you find healing. You will not learn how to push through the pain. You will not learn to be strong. You will not find a to-do checklist that promises a magical way forward. No, you will rather find something so much better: Healing through intimacy with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Author Mary DeMuth continues to encourage readers with this 90 day devotional that is similar to her other devotional, "Jesus Every Day." This book in particular finds an important audience: survivors of abuse. With the exposing of many instances of abuse both in and out of the church, many of those victims have been left to deal with the repercussions of someone else's actions without support or encouragement to overcome.
As a survivor, Mary addresses sensitive topics in a way that is honest, vulnerable and encouraging. She takes things slowly, leading the reader down a pathway that at times can be difficult, but never leaving them to face situations alone. Processing past abuse is not an easy prospect, but having resources like Mary's makes all the difference. Her writing style is like that of a friend sharing with you over coffee.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has dealt with past trauma or abuse, for pastoral or lay leaders in church, counselors and teachers alike. Part of conquering trauma is found in community with those who can truly understand your pain, which this author can. DeMuth is an advocate, a justice seeker and a friend who has been where you are.
Do not miss this resource. Each devotion is short enough that it allows for time to reflect, but not so heavy that it brings any extra stress or challenge along. While the subject matter can be tough, DeMuth's writing always offers the hope found only in Jesus Christ. I feel blessed that in an era of "me, too," we have voices like Mary's that stand up, fight back and reclaim what the enemy thought he had stolen. I think this resource would be helpful to anyone who has a person in their life that would appreciate the gift of "Healing Every Day." It applies to just about anyone who has ever dealt with hurt--which means it applies to all of us. I was thankful to be able to read an early reader copy from Harvest House. I purchased a copy for use in my ministry shortly thereafter.
We all need healing -- healing from events, relationships, trauma, and pain. And we need help healing.
Healing Every Day is a small investment in healing. First of all, the investment of time. Each devotional takes about ten minutes or less. Just a short passage of Scripture, a few paragraphs of explanation, and a prayer. A short time investment each day to meditate on God's grace in the healing process.
Healing Every Day is a small investment of money. Counseling, therapy, even medical help all require a financial investment. But this book is a very small cost toward radical change in our thinking and our spiritual response to pain and suffering.
This book enables spiritual healing for me. And I know it has also in the lives and hearts of my friends. I recommend this book for anyone seeking God's plan for healing.
I’m pretty choosy about spending money on books because of apartment space and finances. Years ago I started using the library more and purchasing only those books I really wanted to keep.
I just bought Mary E. DeMuth’s new devotional Healing Every Day. I am on the launch team, so I’ve read from the PDF and wouldn’t necessarily have to purchase a copy. But I want a copy to hold and mark up and come back to.
I think if you’re dealing with some sort of trauma or extended trial or challenging circumstances, this book is for you. Mary speaks truth and shows compassion at the same time. She bravely shares her own story and writes from where many of us are.
Life is hard. Mary reminds us that Jesus doesn’t leave us when it gets hard.
"Healing Every Day" by Mary DeMuth is a 90 day devotional book. This 90 day devotional uses stories , scripture and practical insights. It helps the reader see their situation from God's perspective . It give the reader insights to look to God in the midst of their troubles. This book will give the reader a new way to see the world and their own life. It is practical and so personable. This book will help the reader move forward with a positive view on their life. Thank you to Harvest House and netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book. I am not obligated to give a positive review.
Mary DeMuth continues to write with an authentic heart that connects with each of her readers. As I have read 3 weeks into this 90 day devotional, I marvel at how each day my heart and mind are touched by shared thoughts and feels Mary expresses. I appreciate her incorporation of Biblical characters who also share our thoughts and emotions. God is active in readers’ hearts as you drink in this living water daily.
DeMuth’s writing is clear, strong and heartfelt. Each day has a short bible verse, a short reflection and a simple prayer. It is just the right length for a 10-15 minute quiet time. Healing Every Day is designed as a 90 day devotional for healing. I believe the reader will get more out of it, reading just one devotional at a time.
As an abuse survivor, DeMuth knows the difficulty of healing and suggests the reader finds a supportive community. Unlike many other “I survived this” books, this book focuses on the reader and their pain, not the writer. DeMuth is okay with being in the wilderness at times. We are never forsaken, nor should we expect easy paths. Whether in reflection, questions, or prayer, DeMuth is honest and open. Like all true healers, she asks hard questions, allowing the reader to do so too.
There are seasons when broken people need professional help. There are also seasons where a lovely heartfelt devotional and a friend bring about healing. I’d buy this book for a hurting friend and schedule times to listen to them.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book will challenge a lot that traditional churches have taught you in life. For me it was all stuff that I struggled with when it came to the Christian community, and didn’t understand why specifically until I read this book. It basically teaches us our responsibility as Christians! How to be a Christian who exemplifies Christ’s love instead of pushing non believers away from God. Excellent read.
Excellent devotional for survivors of sexual abuse, written by a survivor who understands. Mary does a great job of weaving her experiences and the truth of God’s Word into practical daily devotions to help the reader find her way to hope and healing in Christ. Highly recommend!
I‘m so sorry, but what I liked most about the book was its cover. This was indeed what caught my attention. The content on the other hand wasn‘t really for me. However, I‘m sure the book can be helpful to other (probably more religious) people.
I was not expecting this to make such a profound effect on me. I have only been using since May. I suggest it to people looking for answers to fracture lives for many different reasons.
I am on the launch team, so I've been reading a PDF copy of Healing Every Day. By day 7, I loved it so much, I pre-ordered a copy! I got it yesterday. It's so cool, there are flaps on the front and back covers to serve as bookmarks. And there's room to write! That's why I needed a copy in my hands. I want to circle words, write in the margins and add my own prayer every day along with Mary's beautiful prayers.
I think almost all of us have something from our past that we struggle with. At best, we want to move forward, but at worst, we carry awful memories, shame and possibly trauma. Mary survived childhood trauma and abuse, so she understands heartache and suffering. She understands trying to reconcile the tension of enduring evil and questioning where God is/was during our suffering. She loves the Lord and in this devotional, for 90 days, points to Him for healing. This is healing for anyone struggling with their past--long ago or recent past.
Here are a few sentences from Day 3 that I love: "I've been asked how it is that I've been able to stay close to Jesus all these years. First, I wouldn't presume to say it has anything to do with me, it has everything to do with God's faithfulness. But I can honestly say that I'm now at a place where I see the past as a gift--all that heartache served as a catalyst for me to chase after Jesus, to long for him, to crave his love. My 'slavery' led to my emancipation."
Isn't that what we all want? Healing and freedom. And to understand how much Jesus loves us! I pray our journey with God leads us all to healing and freedom!
