Having a magical family secret would be exciting if your hidden gift controlled the elements or summoned dragons . . . not raised the dead.
The latest in a long line of powerful necromancers, Vexa is just trying to live a normal life without starting a zombie apocalypse. But after twenty-seven years of suppressing her powers, Vexa's secret catches up to her in the form of a strange candle, a relic of the days when her ancestors had complete power over life and death, and in a gorgeous man with a terrible curse–Ethan.
As Vexa's life is thrown into chaos, Ethan is the only one who can help her control the candle and introduce her to a paranormal world she never knew existed. But a sinister ancestor and a captivating enemy have other plans for her. She may finally have found a community where she can be herself . . . if the dark forces pursuing the candle don't destroy her first.
Grave Promise is the first of five books in a Slow-Burn Reverse Harem Romance from USA Today bestselling authors, D.D.Miers & Graceley Knox.
D.D. Miers is an ardent book lover, coffee enthusiast, and die-hard romance fan. When she’s not writing, she can be found snuggling on the couch with a good book in hand. She currently resides in beautiful Southern California with her wonderful husband, a crazy toddler, and the many different characters in her head.
This book was hands down my favorite book so far from this duo of authors!! It was just amazing! I immediately fell in love with the characters. I was completely consumed by this fantasy world! And that cliffhanger!!! I can not wait to read more of this series!
This was a great change and something a little different. The necromancer angle is a good one, with a good prefacing story, that then starts introducing characters that essentially fill out the tale. There is no sex to speak of int this first novel, but it’s definitely ramping up.
Lots of magic, a sexy werewolf, and plenty of raising the dead, both intentionally and not. Can’t wait to get stuck into book two.
Vexa is descended from a long line of necromancers. Though the gift has grown rather weak over time with her aunt Persephona not able to raise anything more than insects, Vexa clearly had more power (she could actually raise a full body briefly), so her aunt had attempted to train her over the years. But when her great uncle Morty passes, among his possessions is an ancient candle. Vexa touches it and power floods into her, raising every body in the funeral home, including her deceased great uncle in the middle of the funeral. She finds she’s able to raise more things for a greater amount of time, which comes in handy as she has to fend off a werewolf and a rogue necromancer.
I love necromancers! The whole idea of being able to resurrect the dead has always been fascinating to me. So, I eagerly jumped on getting this, even with the dreaded tag of reverse harem. And I do like Vexa. I love that she’s optimistic, happy, blonde, wears dresses, and loves her family, which is awesome for a necromancer since it makes such a change from all traditional goth type. I loved the use of the necromancy powers throughout the book. I didn’t really buy the having to touch the candle. That felt forced. But I did love the quarreling inheritors, and am dying to know what happened with them, if Aunt Percy made her claim or not (that whole plot thread just sort of got dropped after her phone call to her aunt). I was a little tired of following the bouncing candle as they tracked down lead after lead (who can tell I’m not much of a mystery fan?). I adore Ethan. I loved his carefree, joking attitude as he helped Vexa in the ambulance. I’m saddened that this is eventually going to go down the road of becoming a reverse harem. Ethan has abandonment issues (he said that he gets rejected a lot), so it feels cruel for her to turn him into a second fiddle to a host of other guys in later books. Like he’s not important enough to her to hold her entire heart. I feel sorry for him. I did roll my eyes at adding a werewolf into this and broaching into Cozy territory by adding in all of the other fantasy creatures into this world (it makes it feel less of an Urban Fantasy and more of a Cozy paranormal). I am dying to see more of Greenwood, who was deliciously mysterious, and obviously knew more than he should (and most likely is clichély Fae). I couldn’t stand Cole and I’m really going to think less of the heroine if she allows him to be anything more than an annoying rival. He’s a grungy jerk only interested in his own motivations. (And describing him to be like Spike from Buffy doesn’t help. I hated Spike and Buffy together. I was an Angel fan.) And, yes, I loved the dog. In all, I thought it was a fun book, and I did buy the complete series.
These characters had a lot of potential, and I really wanted more from them because I liked them, but the book was short, and the story is not complete unless you go on to the next book.
Turns out not all necromancers are bad and Vexa is one of the good ones but one of her ancestors might have been and bad one. She learns about him from a photograph during her uncle's funeral. Vexa is sent through the ringer when something from the past sends her power haywire. Seems like everyone is coming after her and she doesn't know who to trust. She meets a guy named Ethan and let's just say he is really really nice distraction. Vexa must push herself to the limits if she is to come out on top with all this mess and she has alot to learn. Great read alot of more questions still to be answered cant wait to read the next.
Some families may hand down valuable heirlooms or secret recipes, but for funeral home embalmer Vexatious Tzarnavaras, it's having the power to manipulate the Dead. Obviously, another family tradition is to have a peculiar name. I loved the fondness that Vexa has for her late uncle Ptolemy. Even though she did not know him, from what his sister (her great-aunt) Persephona has told her, she could imagine them getting into all sorts of mischief together. There's even a casual nod to the Addams family with a Morticia reference!
Of course, you can't start the story off with a family death without distant relatives bickering over the estate too. After discovering a Dorian Gray-esque portrait of her ancestor, Vexa stumbles upon a mysterious candle. She's oddly drawn to it, but she soon learns that she's not the only one who's interested. Cue the danger that ensues: a deliberate attack on her life, a home invasion, and an unwanted house guest in the form of an undead mountain lion. Initially, I felt like I was listening to a cozy mystery, but with the introduction of a sexy werewolf EMT, I felt that slow-burn.
It's funny that some one in the book reviews felt mislead that this was not an urban fantasy because of the sex, and someone else stated there wasn't enough of it. I enjoy sexual tension when it's done well, so that bedroom teaser was just enough to get me invested. Another potential love interest is revealed towards the end and I'd like to see where else that will lead to. There's also a sweet, reanimated pet wolfhound that reminds me of Heihei, the pet chicken from Disney's "Moana." :) Vexa is only going to get even more powerful as time goes on and I'm here for it.
I was given a free copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review. Krys Janae's narration was quite pleasing to listen to and that's all I could ask for really. I've passed on an audio book before because I could not get over the bad voice acting or had to skip within the first couple of seconds. I know I'll definitely give the next book a go. I just wish that this could have been longer, more fleshed out, considering the story takes place within a span of 2 days? I hope the rest of the books are released soon as audio books because I don't like waiting too long in-between.
I didn’t have any expectations going into this book and having read it I now don’t know what to think. I enjoyed it overall, it was well written and being about necromancy, I found it interesting. But it was too short, the last ten percent was an excerpt of another book, and it was not a RH as advertised. Oh, I can see how the next book might introduce a second love interest but that’s still not RH.
Vexa was interesting as the bumbling necromancer coming into power, and I liked that Ethan was more than the typical EMT. However, the whole book felt more like an introduction. An introduction to the characters, an introduction to the plot, and an introduction to the world. Ethan mentions this ‘society’ and it feels like that is leading somewhere but it is a dead end (pun intended) in this first book.
There is a lot of dead things and reanimation, so if zombies freak you out then skip this one, and a slight steamy scene but no cliffhanger as such - like I said the whole book felt like one giant introduction. I gave Grave Promise 4 stars because, while it was short, the story is interesting and well written but I don’t think I’ll be continuing with this series.
This was my first necromancer book and I’m honestly kind of obsessed now.
From the very beginning, I was hooked by Vexa—she’s such a compelling character. She hasn’t fully learned how to control her powers, and when things go sideways (like… raising a bunch of dead people during a funeral 😬), she’s suddenly forced to figure it out fast. Her unpredictability made her really interesting, and I’m excited to see how she grows in the rest of the series. This book definitely felt more like an introduction—to Vexa, her chaotic life, her powers, and this strange world she’s suddenly being pulled deeper into. I saw another review describe it that way and it fits perfectly. Because of that, a few parts of the story felt a little rushed or skimmed over, but I still enjoyed it and I’m hopeful the next books dig into everything more.
Also: Vexa’s name? Vexa Tzarnavarus? I love it. It’s dramatic in the best way. And can we talk about the fact that she’s a funeral assistant who can raise the dead? Heck. Yes.
I’d give it somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars. The length was super short, but it set things up in a fun, fast-paced way. I already love Vexa and I’m curious about where her relationships (especially with Ethan 👀) are going, so I’ll definitely be picking up the next book soon. We’ll see if I stick with the full series, but so far, I’m in.
Sigh. I had to read the first chapter twice because the author doesn’t do a great job having the characters move from one setting to another. I kept forgetting where the characters were supposed to be and what they were doing while the author pumped out exposition. The author put a lot of work into ensuring that readers know the female protagonist is not like other women. I felt myself going cross-eyed as I tried, unsuccessfully, to figure out the point of the book. If authors cannot answer the question of what the protagonist wants, why they aren’t getting what they want, or why I should care one way or the other, there isn’t much point in reading it.
Vexa touches a candle and suddenly she is raising zombies wherever she goes. Someone else wants the candle for themselves. She meets other people who also want the candle. She doesn’t get a grip on her powers and I truly don’t care to find out if she does in some future book.
Another great book by this duo! Vexa comes from a long line of necromancers but has learned to suppress her powers. Unfortunately, when she touches a candle that once belonged to her great-uncle, she becomes connected to the candle and has more power. While trying to take the candle home, someone intentionally hits her car and steals the car. The one good thing about the car accident, is that she meets Ethan, the cute EMT who has a terrible curse. Between trying to deal with her new powers, find the candle, have some romance with Ethan and multiple people trying to kill her, Vexa has her work cut out for her.
This book is full of humor and likable characters. I can't find for the next book to find out what happens with Vexa, to learn more about her family and find out more about Ethan.
I haven’t read many books involving necromancy or where the main character is considered a necromancy so this was fun and refreshing to read. The book itself did a good job of introducing the characters and setting up the plot for the remainder of the series.
My only complaint is that the book itself seemed short and things tend to either be skimmed or glossed over. I don’t mean that I wanted detailed recounts of every mundane action but maybe a little more expansion of Ethan and Vexa’s interactions or maybe Vexa and her aunt.
I definitely plan on continuing the series so I can learn more about Cole and Aethon and see Ethan and Vexa’s relationship evolve and grow. Plus she now has a reanimated wolfhound as a companion which is a good enough reason for me to continue on to book 2 😅
This is a really exciting new series that held my attention from the very first page! This is a quick read however it really sets the scene for upcoming books in the series! Vexa is an interesting FMC, she is very powerful so so untrained and still finding her way. I love her Aunt and how they both support each other. Then we meet Ethan...he is a sweet werewolf and I can’t wait to see how they develop together in future books! Then there is the mysterious Cole...I know he is suppose to be the bad guy but I hope he turn out good as I think he would be good for Vexa. I am intrigued to see what happens next.
Vexa is a necromancer working in a funeral home, whom is trying to be normal. She hadn't had a problem until she found a powerful and magical candle. Now she's trying to learn how to control her powers and people coming after the candle.
This is a great start to the series. There's some action, though not much of the sexual kind. This is a super slowburn. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and have anticipation build up. Grave Promise has great characters with a strong heroine, and fun, entertaining scenes. Miers and Knox can hook a reader.
This book feels more like an extended chapter than a novel. There is no resolution. It is an interesting beginning and a lot happens, but it just ends and feels incomplete. there are good things. The heroine is likable, as is Ethan. Cole has potential to be a favorite, and not many could resist Mort. Vexa and Ethan fall into something pretty quickly, but its not installed. Its more like a general liking and instalust. Although the story is worth the read, be aware that if you want a developed story, you will be reading farther than this one novel.
This book is an interesting beginning of a series. The reader is left with more questions than answers and you don't know what to make of everything. We are introduced to the world how Vexa knows it and learn with her along the way.
The characters are a little underdeveloped since it is the first book in a series and the introduction takes a while. I am very curious how they will develop.
The storie itself is very interesting and not something I read very often. All things considered this book is a very nice and fast read that will make you want more.
Fast paced, unpredictable, & full of sexual tension. A great first book to the series that will get you hooked! Vexa is in way over her head with not nearly enough knowledge of how to control her powers or who to trust, & is still learning about the supernatural world herself. All she has is a bunch of books and an aunt who doesn't know or share nearly enough information on what Vexa is, what she can do, and who their family is. I'm already looking forward to the next book!
Vera is a necromancer, who works at a funeral home. When her great uncle dies - she sort of inherits a black candle that controls all necromancy. With the help of her new friend a werewolf Ethan, can they keep the power of the candle save?
A story of a young woman coming into her power and trying to control it while keeping those safe around her. Cliff hanger.
I loved this book, it was non stop action, mystery & danger with a touch of romance. The FMC Vexa is unique and quirky, and works at funeral home, a death in the family sends her on a quest to discover the origins of her necromancy and unravel a family secret. I couldn't stop once I started, and devoured it in one sitting, I can't wait for the next book, the narration was expressive and brought the characters to life. I received this book in exchange for my unbiased review.
I really enjoyed this book. I have never read a book that had to do with necromancers but it was really good. I loved the story of Vexa and really enjoyed her interactions with Ethan. I can’t wait for Book 2 and to learn more about Vexa’s family and more about Cole. . I feel that story will be very interesting.
This was an interesting story. This was my first necromancer story and I really enjoyed it. Vexa is drawn to a candle that gives her powers she’s not sure exactly what they are. Now everyone wants the candle and is coming after Vexa. I really like Vexa and Ethan and can’t wait too read more.
I voluntarily reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
This is the first story I have read by Knox and Miers, and I will definitely be checking out their other stories. Vexa is an awesome MC, I like how she just rolls with all the surprises in her life. She is smart and strong. This is the first book in a 5 book series, and I can’t wait to skew where the story goes.
Grave Promise is a great start to the How To Be A Necromancer series. The story line is unique and Vera and Ethan are wonderful characters. I was totally intrigued from page one until the final page. Having a cliffhanger ending has me anxiously looking forward to the next book. I highly recommend this book.
Vexatious (Vexa) Tzarnavaras deals with dead bodies at her job at the funeral parlor. What most don't know is that she is also a necromancer, or at least can be. But she knows little about controlling her powers. She meets Ethan who is the EMT who works on her when her car is T-boned. Later she learns he is also a werewolf.
Oh my goodness. To me this is a great first in series book that kept me reading. This book was refreshing and different, with a wonderfully different fantasy world. A nice Necromancer meets a cast of characters ranging from cute to diabolical, to dead. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series.
So even though this is rh it market as kind of a first step into the more uf type rh even says slow burn... It's not. Sex in book one with way too little focus on the plot and more focus on what they have in their pants... It's written well just not what I feel like I was told it'd be..
This is my first time reading a necromacer book and I really enjoyed it don't think u could work in a funeral home mind but the book was quirky and funny I was so pleased that there was a heroine as a main character can't wait for the next book
Loved it! A fast-paced thrilling adventure! I really enjoyed this story full of magic, undead and sexy paranormal males! I loved how original and fun this story was it kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next! I definitely can’t wait for more.
This book so far is awesome. Vexa is a great character. I love necromancer stories. This by far is my favorite. Storyline is great. Makes you want more. So happy there is going to be a book 2. This is by far a great series and I can't wait to read more!!!
Grave Promise is a great quick read and has a unique story plot. It is fast-paced and the characters are quirky and relatable and the story draws you in and takes you on a short ride to a cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next book, my only complaint is it felt too short.
