Into Armageddon is the beginning of a dystopian post apocalyptic world, includes elements of Military Fiction, Science Fiction, hard science and genetic engineering, but reads like an action/ adventure and romance all wrapped up into one pulse pounding novel that you won’t want to put down. It’s the first book in the Ruler of Ashes series.

“I couldn’t put it down, and now that I’m done reading it I can’t wait to find out what happens next! I haven’t stayed up all night to read a book in years. ... if you like Stephen King, ...if you’re a TEOTWAWKI [The End Of The World As We Know It] prepper, you need to read this. You’ll be hooked.” – Amazon Reviewer

Jeff DeMarco's novel, Into Armageddon, is a unique contribution to the dystopian genre. I enjoyed the twists in the plot and how little of the tale I could predict ahead of time. Many of the events are rather brutal in terms of their catastrophic consequences, which illustrates how dangerous life is for many people.

This story was both thrilling and suspenseful. The supernatural creatures and the psychological aspects of the children were all intriguing elements to this action-packed series. I have enjoyed dystopian stories such as The Road and Station 11 in the past, and DeMarco's series has similar elements of abandoned roads and towns that leave the reader wondering what is hiding around the corner. He also includes Orwellian themes, which lovers of the sci-fi/fantasy genre will be sure to appreciate.

I can see Into Armageddon being made into a successful movie franchise in the future. The settings and characters would be visually engaging as both a graphic companion text and as a feature film.

The conclusion of the novel is a complete surprise, which I refuse to ruin for new readers, but I can tell you that I will most definitely be purchasing the next book when it is available. Intriguing plot, conflicts, characters, and settings - all make this a 5-star book. I will be sharing this story with my grade 12 students.

Where do I start? I’d initially thought she was gagged and bound, but she’d volunteered for it. And soon after, upon realizing just what she had agreed to, and her pending fate, and after finding love… How she grew up as a person, a mother…
The story evolved just like that segment. Powerfully, touching, gripping. Into Armageddon takes hold of your heart and holds it captive. The author’s use of dialog is straight out of real life, compelling, potent. Claire, and all of the seemingly hundreds characters in this story, sprung to life. And in life, sometimes lessons are very painful. Thus, in very short time, Claire had her priorities rearranged. What came next was the ultimate sacrifice, what parents, two good people who have found each other under terrible circumstances, will do for a child. This—is love. And all of that runs contrary to the twisted minds in charge of “The Order.”
But there’s an evolution to all sides, over the course of almost two decades. This story is an exemplification of love, growth, life, and sci-fi action that’ll have your favorite chair ready for the junkyard. Get ready to squeeze those armrests. I’m not joking. And it’s early to say but I’ll go out on a solid limb: Into Armageddon, by author Jeff DeMarco, will be added onto my favorite’s list, for the year of 2019. This was an explosive, diverse, everywhere adventure that reminds me of only one other book. But the only thing it had in common with that other work—and no names here because I want this 5-star review to fully illuminate Jeff’s unique style and amazing talent for storytelling—was how Jeff’s story will stick with me for a long time to come. I absolutely LOVED this book.
And it rolls out like this… (stop reading if you wish for zero spoilers)
After cleverly thought-out and close-call getaways—and the aforementioned sacrifices, with deep character development continuing throughout the story—a special child survives, against the odds. She’s a beautiful young girl, smaller than most, and one to fall in love with. But there are ten more genetically modified special ones who sit on the fence, wavering this way and that—save for one. One of them is a dark soul with no chance to see “the light,” a black heart, yet very smart, very powerful, with extraordinary capabilities. And this dark one has decided. And because of this decision things go awry for the entire world. SNAP! Fast-paced like the story is, this happens quickly.
From part two, mid-book, it’s all up to a group of survivors—who’d found each other because of some very special reasons—to lead the resultant chaos, and remaining lazy human beings, back toward a life with some structure. From their destination on the military base, everything culminates and builds. And the escalation resulted in me finding myself cheering, nearly roaring out a “YES!” and pulling a few fists of schadenfreude—as well as tearing up. And, a first in a long time, I found myself glancing at the ‘percent-finished’ indicator at the bottom of my Kindle app. I’d hoped this story would never end. But it did. And when it did it was as though I was hopped up on bennies for two hours! The climax of events was a culmination of genetically modified terrors brawling with omnipotent powers. CLASH! And combined with the characters I’d come to love—all of it was just too much.
But all ended well, almost. Stage SET for the sequel! And I am all in.
SIX out of FIVE stars for Into Armageddon. It was THAT freakin’ AWESOME!

Tetris is easier to put the pieces together than this novel's plot

Into Armageddon: An Wpocalyptic Science Fiction Thriller (Ruler of Ashes)
. The plot is interesting but character development is lacking and minor poorly developed characters pop up to serve no real purpose.
The character Ari, who becomes central to the plot of the last half of the story, shows up out of no where to help Dustin rescue a family in a wrecked car. She had briefly shown up as the maid of honor at Dustin's brother's wedding. Later on she discloses that she had essentially been following him at the behest of Erica.
Erica for some reason, that is never explained, has reached out to both Dustin and Ari telepathically but has no prior knowledce of either or the fact these two characters had only briefly met and shared  a couple of drinks once. She refers to Dustin as her uncle but this lineage is never established. Finally, once Dustin and Ari arrive to "rescue" Erica she is nothing but nasty to Ari. This relationship transforms over the course of the novel to the point she is adopted by Ari and Dustin.

The overall plot of the story, centres around a group of zealots at high levels of military and the US vice-president decide to rid the earth of all people deemed to not be essentially pious enough to be allowed to live. This group called the Order , entice pregnant single motgers into alleged clinical trials to prevent people from having diabetes. Nefariously these children are genetically treated in vitro to gain a variety of telepathic / telekinesis and ability to take over the actions of others, kill the birth mothers and nurture them with ither memvers of the Order.
These children, who reemerge in the novel at around age 15 but are portrayed like younger children with adult personalities take over those who created them with the evil narcissist Jacob being the most powerful of these.
The Order rather than the biblical Noah flood invoke the Crimson Sky that turns some but not all people into werewolves who feed on those not infected who have been deemed unworthy to live.

It seems that DeMarco has several plotlines any of which would have been intriguing by themselves or possibly combining 2 or more if the narrative wasn't so convoluted by failing to establishing the groundwork for connecting them. Honestly, this story could have been brilliant but, to be as kind as this novel warrants, is a hot mess.
The cliff hanger ending will likely entice a number of readers to purchase the sequel. I will not be one of them.

There are people who believe there are ways to improve society, our world, as we know it. Few, however, will ever act on it. And the ones that do, usually have a clouded, maniacal vision of what's best for everyone. Mainly, it's because their "Big Picture" view includes destroying mankind (minus themselves, of course), and building a 'super world' to their liking that they can control.

Sounds scary. But what is really scary is when our own government is at the core of that action. Such is the case in Jeff DeMarco's terrifically terrifying, dystopian novel, Into Armageddon. The government has been infiltrated by a group of individuals that make up a mysterious organization referred to as The Order. They believe that mankind is in need of a change… an upgrade, so they have decided to remake humanity in their own image. They have genetically enhanced humans by altering them in the mother’s womb. This super-race of children are anything but innocent as they are unleashed on an unsuspecting world. Throw in a viral outbreak that creates a form of apex human predators that are roaming freely across the country, savaging anyone and everyone in their tracks, and you have chaos and destruction at its highest level.

This book is brilliantly written, mixing military and science fiction into what is essentially an action-packed adventure story. There are even elements of love and family for the romantic in each of us. I don’t read a lot of dystopian fiction but had heard so many good things about Into Armageddon, that I felt compelled to see what all the fuss was about. I’m glad I did. The author really knows his stuff, and it shows with how expertly he weaved a believable military backdrop into a powerful science fiction story.

This is book one in the Ruler of Ashes series. My advice? Pick up book one and two together since the author ends book one with a wonderful setup for book two. Definitely a five-star reading experience.

Genetically modified children rebel against their creators to rule a ruined world.

I am not typically a fan of military fiction or tales set in dystopian worlds. That said, Into Armageddon has both, and the combination, along with non-stop action and fascinating characters kept me up into the wee hours of the morning. It was well worth the bleary eyes.

Book one of the Ruler of Ashes series gives the reader plenty to think about. This story takes a hard look at how people compartmentalize logic, desire, fear, and the lengths they are willing to go to create their vision.

How do religious fanatics justify killing, lying, and abusing power as the means to make society more “godly?”

How do soldiers, sworn to defend and protect the nation and its people, obey orders that are clearly the antithesis of their oath?

What happens when innocent children are raised in a facility bereft of parents, kindness, and love. What happens when they are told that because they are genetically enhanced, they are special, better than “regular” humans? What if they are told human casualties are acceptable, and that might makes right?

Erica, a fifteen-year-old girl, is also a modified human being, but her upbringing differs greatly from that of the other children. Erica was secreted away from the facility as an infant. Raised by a loving surrogate mother and surrounded by people who care about her, the girl wants only to live in peace and freedom. She hides her talents and refuses to use them, considering them an abuse of power.

But Erica’s serene world is about to clash with that of her psychotic, power-obsessed peers. Can one compassionate adolescent stand against the others, or will she succumb to the necessity of using her powers to save herself and those she loves?

At times when you see an indie book as highly rated as Jeff Demarco’s Into Armageddon (Ruler of Ashes), and you are surprised at the book's ability to keep you engaged. This book's 5star rating is absolutely deserved. Demarco’s story left me thinking it’s as good if not better than any Stephen King or Michael Crichton novel.
The book starts as a slow burn with a group of misguided individuals with warped ideals and the resources and support of the government set on changing the world for what they view as better for all. Over time the project becomes more twisted and the developers gradually lose control of the biological weapons they developed. As a reader I found myself fully immersed into the story as it exploded into a worldwide Armageddon as small groups of people band together to survive not just the destruction, but the perpetrators that are not done with their destruction as they take over the world.
DeMarco does a great job in describing the characters as people we all know in our lives but are suddenly forced to take desperate measures to survive the unthinkable at the same time find a path towards working together and rebuilding the country as well as their lives. The rebuilding is another conflict that is developing since the different groups have different ideas what the future should look like.
In addition, he is use of military equipment and techniques is on target giving a true sense of realism to the story.
It’s an enjoyable survival story that provides different pathways toward different visions of future.

It has been said the world is full of good intentions, a wonderful thought to think of and believe in. But it's just as disturbing to think that our entire world can be brought to its knees by those in power who think they are 'saving' the world with their so called 'good intentions'. Author Jeff DeMarco takes us on a chilling journey that details the actions of a stealth power organization called 'The Order', and their scientific manipulations that erupt as the chaos of these biological/genetically engineered intentions unfold, uncontrollable, devolving into a reality that brings the world as we know it to an end.

Genetically modified children with extreme powers, military madmen, humans that degenerate into vicious killing machines, and the power of the few who struggle to survive and rule using any means necessary in this new world makes for a chilling tale as the truth of what's been unleashed is slowly decoded. There are dark secrets yet to be revealed--who should be trusted? Who will be successful? Or will everyone be doomed to destruction by the madness of power? A chilling, page turning read that will keep you on the edge to the end!

The Apocalypse is approaching, but only a select few have an idea of what form it will take…
Genetic manipulation, special skills and powers, and cold blooded murder, all go together in this well-crafted and somewhat unnerving tale. A word of advice: don’t get too attached to any particular characters, because you just never know who’s going to be killed off next!
That said, I always appreciate a little humour in the apocalypse:
‘A new recruit with big ears raised his hand. “Do we get to shoot a rocket launcher?” Dustin’s eyes closed as he shook his head, pinching the bridge of his nose. “No… you do not get to shoot a rocket launcher.”’
Oh come on! That’s a perfectly valid question! ;-)
Though the narrative flow was a tad uneven at times, I still found this to be an exciting read with some genuinely likeable characters. If you’re into apocalyptic stories, then this is definitely one for you!

A secret religious organization working within the government, a group of genetically enhanced kids, and the unleashing of a virus that genetically modifies humans into savage beasts. All this and a bad-ass but very like-able broken and reluctant hero. I’ll refrain from saying more, less I spoil the whole thing.

Nonetheless, DeMarco seems to have pulled together multiple sci-fi and end-of-world tropes into this first of a series. While I enjoyed the majority of this story, I felt the multiple story lines and points of view didn’t always work, particularly in moments where the story seemed to focus too heavily on one character so much the overarching story got lost.

Nonetheless, Into Armageddon has a strong and satisfying finish that makes me want to read more. Fans of end-of-world b-movie films would most definitely enjoy this story.

This could be so true...the end of days nightmare.
It's a complex story weaving a number of threads into a terrifying whole...do not skip ahead. I enjoyed the realism and could relate to the story elements. It is scifi but tied to the world we know. I found the underlying concept chilling...much worse than the Flood as it is intimate and not caused by an external event.

This is book one of a series...the world is in ashes, and a few special children hold the key to what comes next. I'm hooked...and I'm pretty certain you will be too.

This was a refreshing book away from the usual zombie fiction that I love to read. It's a military fiction which is actually a genre that I not too hot about but the cover caught my attention, so I decided to give it a go. However, the mixture of genetic engineering and well-written characters make this an excellent read. The characters is what brought it home for me, totally relatable characters. I look forward to book 2!

Very good story!

I have greatly enjoyed reading this book! You developed the characters well and made them seem just like regular people complete with life stories that were carried along with th as they travelled through the book. I look forward to the continuation of your work.
