The author of Deadly Wands and the asteroid-impact novel Regolith, Mr. Reilly has a Master's degree in Counseling, an autistic son, speaks Spanish, and builds oceanfront Caribbean condos.
Mermaid Wars by Brent Reilly is not a book meant for everyone. The audience is a very specific action pulp, military epic, and speculative fantasy. If these things don't appeal to you then stay away. Better to have fewer readers than to get overly critical readers that ill-appreciate the unique concepts of the narrative designed for mature readers due to the profanity, adult themes, and sexual situations.
The story moves with a rapid pace through small incidents and their far-ranging consequences imbued in a larger report of military events. Epic, in scope, there are battles that involve not just merfolk, but other denizens of the deep such as whales, sharks, megalodons, and cephalopods.
When the merfolk and the land dwellers begin to procreate, then there are hybrid races that form, and they too must join the fray. The battles are communicated in descriptive verbosity that is comprehensive and didactic. Intermingled with the larger events are the smaller sexual, love affairs that add value to the larger narratives which are designed to appeal to the fanboy geek inside of me. Although I would never consider the story high-fantasy, I still believe it to be a worthwhile read that has merit and destined to be subject to discussion.
I shouldn't have continued reading this book, but the only character I liked, the mermaid queen, still interested me. The story is borderline a history book, just telling tales of war after war. When the writing actually had narrative, specifically when characters talking about something besides war, the writing was really good.
So many things about this book were boring and repetitive. Fight after fight. The mermaids weren't even that cool, the cover is a complete lie. Also, the formatting in this book pissed me off. Please find a way to have your chapter show up on a new page! It was so annoying to try and put bookmarks in a book without formatting.
This story is boring, with bland characters and endless fighting. I shouldn't have finished it because it wasn't rewarding.
A good read for people who are into the series recommended highly a good read but quick shaping up to be a good series. Must read the next one of the series
I got this book because I like the idea of mermaids and Atlantis. I thought I would enjoy this book, but it was very difficult for me to follow. I finished it because I want to finish books I start, but I was tempted to stop reading many times. Just because I didn't enjoy it, that does not mean someone else might not. This is why I gave it three stars. It is difficult for me to give less than three stars because I recognize the effort and time that goes into writing. I also like the concept. I just wish the story made more sense. It was like a stream of consciousness. I couldn't really make heads or tails of it.
I really enjoyed this book. There is a lot of action packed adventures. I especially liked each of the characters. This is a fast paced short story that will keep you turning the pages.
