Book five of the ONLY HUMAN series…

Abbott agreed to let Kirsten seek revenge on Gavin, and she hopes doing so before she pulls away from the supernatural community will make others hesitant to come after Kirsten or her family.

Before Lauren goes away to college, Kirsten wants to be sure she’s done all she can to prepare her daughter. They take a trip to China, and Kirsten hopes she can get her old teacher to train her daughter. However, when they arrive, things aren’t as they should be.

In China, the Lion Dance and Dragon Dance are ubiquitous, and the Monkey King frequently plays a part in both. Kirsten is friends with the Lion King and Dragon King, and despite the fact this has nothing to do with the legendary Chinese lion or dragon, the implications are far-reaching once she’s back in China.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Candace Blevins writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, epic fantasy contemporary BDSM romance, and two kick-ass motorcycle club series. She’s published more than fifty books. Candace lives with her husband of twenty-four years and their two teenaged daughters. The family’s beloved, goofy, retired racing greyhounds are usually at her side as she writes, quietly keeping her company. Or sometimes not so quietly.

Her urban fantasy series, Only Human, gives us a world where weredragons, werewolves, werelions, three different species of vampires, and a variety of other mythological beings exist.

Candace's various paranormal romance series are all sister series to the Only Human series, and give some secondary characters their happily ever after.

Her Dark(ish) Faerie Tale series gives us a close-up and personal look at Queen Mab, and her Dark Underbelly series is, as you’d expect, dark and (if you’re a little twisted) oh-so-yummy.

Her contemporary Safeword series gives us characters who happen to have some extreme kinks. Relationships can be difficult enough without throwing power exchange into the mix, and her books show characters who care enough about each other to fight to make the relationship work. Each couple in the Safeword series gives the reader a different take on the lifestyle.

Starting off with a bang, Kirsten receives retribution for the heinous mind and physical violations Gavin perpetrated upon her in the last book. Which means - this book is not a standalone and must be read in the order it was written for a good experience. This book surprises me because whilst I understood in the back of my mind two things, I didn't consider they would be written or detailed out to this degree. First, I know many are angry at Gavin and want him punished or killed. Second, Kirsten goes to ... CHINA!

Gavin, Gavin, Gavin... I have a love hate relationship with him because whilst I understand why he does things, I don't agree with it. And my biggest issue with Gavin from the last book is how he discounts Kirsten and just violates what I thought was the friend code with blatant disrespect. With a vampire as old as Gavin, it makes sense why he isn't concerned with a puny red-headed human that every male seems to want to get a piece of. Because, isn't she just a little fluff? Kirsten readjusts' his attitude within the first couple of chapters. Wow. Ms. Blevins goes dark and I like it. Nothing kinky ... pure intimidation tactics. Because is it better to be feared or respected? Why not have both?

China bursts onto the scene due to Kirsten's earlier years at a monastery as in her self-discovery phase. For Westerners, China is a land of mystery and sometimes confusion. This is because the Eastern thinking and philosophy are most times in direct conflict with Western. This includes the Western Europeans... not so much the Eastern Europeans. I also find that most people know zip about China Mythology or Lore. Because seriously, Greek/Roman is so much sexier in many ways. Norse/Viking is totally hawt and violent especially with Marvel movies shoving it into our faces. We do not even blink twice with Irish/Scottish/Welsh and their Fae. But with the Asian ones, they are so different in that it just makes people uncomfortable. Why do I bring this up? Because Ms. Blevins does a lovely job with a crash course intro that may ease readers into this world. Instead of coming across so foreign, she is piecing together similarities to help readers bridge this gap. For this, I'm impressed and thankful.

This is now going to go into a little rant. I have had Asian authors who get really miffed when non-Asians write about Asian characters or themes. I get what they are saying but quite frankly, I don't give a damn. (Probably because I'm not a writer and depending on this for my living.) Ms. Blevins' Chinese setting, characters all ring true and pretty close to the Chinese experience. I enjoyed seeing some of the things I grew up knowing showing up in this book. There is zero cultural misappropriation in this book. I digress.

Let's talk about the sex because Ms. Blevins writes some of the best intense BDSM around. Yeah, about that... there is virtually no sex in this book so if you are expecting some hawt loving, forget about it. There are a couple of scenes in here that are sexy hawt - specifically when Nathan and Kirsten get together. I have only one other comment about Nathan. I was less than thrilled when Nathan and Kirsten became an item. Now, with a turn of events, it seems this will no longer be a lover relationship. The way this falling out happens makes me feel like Mary from the old nursery rhymes... "Mary, Mary, quite contrary..." I am miffed at Nathan even if I don't want to see him with her.

Quite honestly, the lack of sex enhances this book because the focus is on Kirsten and her daughter. It is the calm before the storm. The supernatural world has gone quiet and she needs the downtime. This is another positive point to Ms. Blevin's writing style and maturity. She is able to condense a large time period and effectively show and tell what needs to be shown or told. This lack of physical "action" so to speak is nice because it gives us time to connect better with Kirsten and some of the other leading characters. This is definitely not a filler book. It is a book to lay another solid foundation for the next book.

Kirsten's journey and her quest is an interesting one because she is being tasked with something a human can not do. Not only that, she runs across the Monkey King who can help or hinder based on how he feels. He is dangerous and not to be messed with. As a child, my mother always warned me about the Monkey King and how he is a rascally demon. With new power players on the set, it will be interesting to see what happens next.

This urban fantasy is highly recommended to readers who enjoy new experiences and intricate writing.

Now, this is the Candace Blevins that I know and love when she writes Paranormal. Edge of Humanity was wonderfully written, extremely interesting and started giving me what I truly want for Kirsten. Unfortunately, that damn Lion King keeps upsetting me and, the HEA that I am hoping for just may not be able to come about. But, one can dream.

Kirsten is back. Out of all the Only Human books, this is my favorite so far. She was strong, yet vulnerable. She knew what she needed to do and didn't care who thought ill of her for doing it. She set out on a journey for her and her daughter, completed it and came home stronger and more convinced that Lauren will be fine when she is away. Only to run into another problem as she gets her to school. A problem that is solved but, again, pushes Nathan away.

I loved the descriptions of China, of the way Candace seamlessly brought us from the supernatural in Chattanooga to the supernatural all over China and the respect and love that was shown for Lauren. The mother/daughter relationship is beautiful and so down-to-earth. You can't help but love that side of Kirsten. But, with Lauren away, what's next? Will Nathan see the reason why she did what she did and had to do? Will the supernatural war really start coming to a head? Where will Kirsten end up in the true battle?

With all these questions, you can't help but look forward to seeing where this story is going and how it's going to come to an end. I am putting my faith in Candace Blevins to build on this story and keep moving us forward to a happily-ever-after for Kirsten. I am just not sure who she will end up with and that's what makes me want to keep reading this series.

Release Day Review! Edge of Humanity (Only Human #5 / Kirsten O'Shea Universe) Candace Blevins!

Book five of the ONLY HUMAN series...

I went on a wonderfully enlightening and satisfying journey with Kirsten O’Shea and her daughter in Edge of Humanity which is the fifth book in the Only Human series.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I have never been too far from home and Kirsten’s trip to China provided me with lots of picturesque and intriguing views of the fascinating culture and landscape. Kirsten’s journey was one that was quite fast paced with lots of thrilling events and meetings with wonderfully eclectic and fascinating characters and there was a few chuckles to be found as well. But most of all Kirsten discovers more about herself and her abilities which may have far reaching consequences in her life back home.

Kirsten’s return and her trip to bring Lauren to Cambridge is just as exciting but in a more dangerous way as they are situations from the past that need to be made right and of course keeping Lauren safe from Kirsten’s enemies. Edge of Humanity is fast paced and a fascinating and thrilling adventure no matter where the story takes place and I also got to meet more interesting characters and there was an exciting battle where Kirsten’s new abilities become to known and in a spectacular way which of course just makes Kirsten even more intriguing. The story also has quite a bit of erotic lovemaking in it, although not quite as much as usual which is understandable.

Once again, Candace Blevins’ fascinating and well developed supernatural world full of wonderful characters was enthralling and kept me glued to the pages until the very end and as always I can’t wait for the next one, whether it’s from the Only Human, Chattanooga Supernaturals or the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club, The Dark Underbelly and The Dark(ish) Fairytale series, because they are all thrilling books to read.

if there is one book that I would recommend for women around the world to read ... I just couldn't pick ONE, but instead, I would say that they need to get on the wagon that is Kirsten O'Shea book series. You may not be into BDSM aspect of her life, or the supernatural part either (*shocking gasp* how dare you!!!) but you will LOVE, ADORE and RESPECT her for the way she conducts herself, how she lives life according to her values and aspects, how she raises her daughter and the time and effort she puts into this girl ... I'm out of words. I've meet with wonderful parents, but if I could choose a guidebook, I would look up to Kirsten - even for the ass kicking !!

This is the culmination of a 5 book series and it is the cake mix for all of Candace books (like we needed more reasons to love it!) and it is AMAZING !! you are in for a roller coaster off a book plot and situations and you will be left with your mouth glued to the floor even if you read all of Candace books, you will be floored !!!! Candace muse was on a roll with this book, and she took no prisoners (just how we like it *wink, wink* !)

Candace and Kirsten take no prisoners, leave no stone unturned and kick ass. If there would be a poster image for a mamma bear, these two girls would share the first place.
I hope you are ready for this book, its been a loong time coming, and it still amazes me the time, effort and detail that Candace put into this series, but this book in particular is off the charts and deserves a standing ovation *standing up* *clapping* !!!
Its one for the TOP lists and I do love it ... now if you excuse me, I need to re-read the series (!!again!!) (I've re-read each time a new book comes out, I should know it by heart by now ) , and the Dragon king (can't be without Aaron <3 ) and I need to let it sink in more, cause there is so much to this, its so good !!!
Have fun reading, Houston, I'm going in !!!

Best ever! This one takes a big leap beyond the previous OH books. It is so complex in story line and characterization! It was also so dense with adventure and development of character that I am really kind of surprised that it wasn't published as two books. No complaints though! The problem with reviewing this book is that most of what I would like to say would create spoilers, and I can't stand it when people do that! What can I say? The first scene will knock your socks off. You will learn a lot about a foreign country, and probably want to go there. You will (probably) forgive, or at least have a better understanding of, a couple of people that you were really pissed off at when the last book ended. A whole bunch of other things that you will have to find out for yourself! So, in short, this is a beautiful book. Stop reading whatever you are reading now and read this one. You will be glad that you did!

Kirsten jumps right into resolving her issues with Gavin (from the last book - Defining Human). Unfortunately, I didn't realize that I should not be eating when I read the first couple of chapters. Wow, what a scene! The book starts off strong and just kept going.

I very much enjoyed Kirsten's journey in China as she remembers her past there while enjoying her present. I felt like I had more questions when I was done reading that portion of the book than I did when I started. Kirsten is the kind of heroine that I want to keep reading the next story about. She has a compelling story and personality that draw a reader in and sneakily wraps her energy around them. The reader can only read as fast as possible to find out where they are being taken and if the ride will end well or by going over a cliff.

At the end of the book, I was happy for Lauren, conflicted about Kirsten, mad at Nathan, and a little confused about Cora. Other major characters didn't seem to change my opinion of them - this time. There is no true ending nor a cliff-hanger but I still am eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series!

If you’re looking for an urban fantasy series that will knock your socks off and make you forget your name, then I can’t speak highly enough of Candace Blevins Only Human series and book 5 was unbelievable. While Ms. Blevins is known for her ability to add seemingly imperceptible details to her story that take them up a notch or five, “Edge of Humanity” took it even higher.

My mother was born in China and lived there through much of her formative years, and my siblings’ father was born in Mongolia, so I grew up loving the richness of China’s history, the land, and the food. The locales in this story was a bit like reliving many of the stories told to me in childhood with the exception that no one ever had the Monkey King at their side. And of course the battles/fights were fantastic. So much dram and so well played out. Well, there’s more, but that would be spoilers.

Suffice to say, this was an amazing addition to the series and I’m quite certain I inhaled the story as soon as I opened it. It’s that good.

With so many hooks to this series, the coup-de-grace is the absolute certainty that as a reader, you literally have *no* idea what is coming next. The more certain I am that I know whats coming, the more likely I am to be horribly wrong. Its not like we are being misdirected. Its just that I am in awe of the imagination that conjures each book in this story line. And, in the midst of a pretty wicked urban fantasy, there is still room to learn things you never knew you never knew...to coin a phrase/song.

Down time even has a purpose for Kirsten, and she uses it well to see that her daughter is strengthened in all ways beyond the physical. Spirituality merges with and through supposed magic, and there is something to be garnered from all of it beyond an intriguing read. But an intriguing read it is, and geography notwithstanding, Kirsten's mental, spiritual and physical work-out goes a long way towards making her a stronger person, as well as a more lethal weapon.

And I *still* can't say with any accuracy what might be coming next, but man, I have got to get me some of this koolaid...

Delving deeply into the beauty and mysticism of China, we follow Kirsten and her daughter as they spend time in the land of Laurens birth and where Kirsten trained. As Lauren trains, Kirsten journey's with a quest to fix a problem on the mountain. This was really a beautiful story. Quite unlike the previous books, erotica was minimal in favor of a cerebral awakening story. The war with the celrau vampires brought torture to the book, and Gavins' long awaited punishment for her mind invasion came to fruition in the first pages. Conflict between lovers, looming war, and new magic rounded out this excellent book.

I found that of all of the Only Human series this book had the most mysticism and magic. Both Kirsten and Lauren learn so much about themselves and meet many different teachers. And then Kirsten gets to use all of what she learned.
Ms. Blevins uses words to paint her canvas of China as both the background and the foreground. It's vivid and enticing. I immediately read it a second time - needless to say I loved it.

Edge of Humanity gives us a peek at Kirsten’s past and takes her another step away from humanity. We get a look at both the softer and harsher sides of Kirsten. We feel her incredible capacity to love and the lengths she will go to protect same. I really enjoyed this glimpse into Kirsten and can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next.

This felt like an epic journey, and it was, and I can't wait for more!

We get to trail along with Kirsten as she and Lauren have their final trip before Lauren goes off to university, and, as Lauren settles into university. First though, Gavin needs to pay his price, and Abbott, Gavin, and Kirsten need to show the supernatural world they aren't at odds. It squicked me out a bit watching that play out, and Gavin is still scary, but I was happy Abbott and Kirsten found a common ground

Then off to China, and this was as intense a journey for me as a reader, as it was for Kirsten. As she explained later in the book, so many things, some big, some small, but each one was a step along her journey. I loved the Monkey King, but wouldn't want to mess with him. His presence and power leapt off the pages, disguised as fun and silliness, but he was subtle in his wisdom. Being with Kirsten and Lauren through China showed so much of the dynamic they have, and the strength they both hold. The mother-daughter bond is so strong with them

Once back in the states, some problems are better, others are stagnant, and Kirsten realizes what her absence has done. She has changed with her travels, but her support network helps her out. New things are happening with Kirsten and Lauren, but old enemies lie in wait. We meet a new ally, a new threat, an old threat, and more of the expanded world outside Chattanooga. The pieces are aligning for big changes to come, and after all that has changed so much, so far, that is as scary as it is exciting!

Kirsten starts with a bang in this one. Her rightful vengeance against Gavin is detailed and sadistic. There are moments she is in doubt but she quickly correct herself remembering him violating her and enjoying it. We get some insight into his past and. I could almost call it conditioning as it made him the way he is. I understand some of his reasoning so I don't hate him completely. Her punishment is brutal and almost symbolic with her holding his heart. I still regret her relationship with Abbott but there were other path meant for her.

Kirsten goes to China. So this book has more mystic and spiritual ways in finding her old teacher and learning new things. Her power grows incredibly. It was interesting twist seeing Eastern culture, philosophy and their mythology that is much different than ours. Their everyday life is more intervened with it so following her path gets us some insight. And Mrs. Blevins overcome the cultural difference with ease so the reader doesn't feel bewildered even though he is not familiar with their ways.

There is little sex in this one, but that one scene with Nathan makes up for it as Mrs. Blevins knows how to write intense and hot scenes. Furthermore that makes this book a bit different than others as it’s more about Kirstin and her daughter. The title fits perfectly because Kirstin starts to question her humanity, lack of empathy at the moments and what will become of her. She doesn't want to be in the supernatural world, but there are players out there who want her and/or her daughter because of potential she holds.

I am intrigued with the plot and where will it lead. There are still many unanswered questions I am looking forward seeing where the story will lead us.

Surpassing All My Expectations

Edge Of Humanity, book 5 of the Only Human series, began with a gamut of emotions. I was thrilled, shocked, grief-stricken, horrified, justified, and relieved and that was just the first few chapters! But the emotional roller coaster doesn't stop there. After reading all the books in the Only Human series, including this one, I already felt like a part of this world! Now that I have been part of the Only Human world this long, I felt like I have become one with Kirsten! And that just shows how amazing Candace Blevins is at writing.
As Kirsten goes on her quest and Lauren learns from Kristen's Shifu, in China, both learn a great deal about themselves and their abilities. The gamut of emotions continues as they return to the USA and head to Massachusetts to get Lauren settled into University life. In Edge Of Humanity, you learn even more about Lauren and see her spectacular growth. I personally was proud of Lauren! Tears came to my eyes, my stomach hurt from laughing so hard, my heart was mended and rebroken again all in this book! In my humble opinion Edge Of Humanity is the best book yet in the Only Human series. Candace Blevins surpassed all my expectations! Candace accomplished something, not all authors are capable of, leaving me begging for more! And now I will be impatiently waiting for book 6 of the Only Human series!

From the first few pages, the storyline just grabs you and doesn’t let go.

Kirsten goes on quite an adventure, beginning with getting revenge on Gavin, after he mentally assaulted her. That was just one of the things to get through before she starts slowly withdraws from the supernatural world. Next is a trip to China with her daughter Lauren. Lauren needs to get some training so that she can be prepared to be on her own and defend herself.

Kirsten goes off on her own journey to try and find some answers. She definitely meets interesting characters along the way, that Monkey King is something else. Whether she finds those answers or not, I’ll leave it for you to find out. Once she and Lauren return back home, it was quite emotional when Lauren goes off to continue her studies. But Kirsten will have a big fight on her hands, will she have the power to help out the Supernaturals?

Can I just say how much I hurt for her and Nathan, they would make such a great and powerful couple, but alas that is not to be.

Make sure you pick up this installment in the Only Human series, they do need to be read in order as the storyline continues from book to book.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

By book five, this series is still keeping me engaged, but I'm hoping for more forward momentum of the supernatural war in the next installment.
Kirsten continues to be an engaging character, trying to navigate supernatural politics even though she's "only human" (although by this book, she's pretty clearly not - whether she's a Valkyrie or the reincarnation of Frejya or something else is still up in the air). I really liked seeing the aspects of her motherhood, which humanizes her in the face of what she does to Gavin, which was pretty inhuman. In Kirsten's on-again-off-again relationship with Nathan, she's off-again through most of this book and that's getting a little tiresome, so I'm hoping there will either be more resolution or maybe Kirsten will move on in the next book. I appreciated her strength in choosing to end things with The Abbott in previous books and the on-again-off-again thing with Nathan is makes her seem wishy-washy. Nathan's pride gets a little "screen time" in this book, and RaeLynn is an engaging character. I liked her a lot in the cross over to the Chattanooga Supernaturals series. She's got a great sense of humor and her own agenda, so I hope we get to see more of her in future as well.

The Edge of Humanity book 5 in the Only Human Series

Kristen's fight to get back to her ground zero and to make sure her daughter has all the tools on the beginning journey of her own life.

I've loved every one of the books in this series some characters more so than others. Kristen was different for me I liked her but yeah. I think my teetering comes from how much I like the Abbott and Nathan. Understanding those two males, then understanding why Kristen has to be like she is it keeps my opinion about Kristen balanced.

The mama bear is crazy scary and knows how to serve a dish of revenge cold. I like Gavin because of his protection of the Abbot, but yeah he is nowhere near endearing.

The detail in the story was remarkable it showed the writer didn't just write back did some background and was able to give us some awesome history and culture. China is an amazing country with rich history and Ms. Blevins writes it into her story like a boss.

I'd day dark, fun, intense page-turner full of action, new "faces" full of personality. I loved the story as well as the characters. I have to ask when its all said and done, is there truly and out? Enjoy.

If you have followed Kirsten through all her exploits you know she is a kick-a$$ lady who takes no prisoners.
Well, maybe one or two along the way!?
In this book you'll meet Kirsten the kick -a§§ mother. Before her daughter goes off to college she wants to make certain that she can defend herself and is safe from potential revenge attacks from one of her, Kirsten's, enemies.
What you get is a potent mixture of a woman doing everything in her power to make it absolutely clear that anyone touching her child would forfeit his/her/its life.
A spiritual quest to find answers and remedies for age old questions, and a fiercely loving mother with a very special bond to her daughter.
This is another epic journey through the Blevins universe that will have you glued to every page!

This fifth book in the series find Kirsten taking some time off to bond with Lauren before she heads off to college. A trip to China finds both characters growing in power. The time off means a little less action than some of the previous books, but the story still has enough action to remain a fast paced adventure.

This series has become the series that I use to judge all other paranormal/UF books. I read a book and it's good, but not Only Human Good. I think it's the attention to detail that makes this series so good. It's the small details that allows her to blend the supernatural elements with the modern world seamlessly. The books has a good natural ending, no cliffhangers, but enough to leave me wanting more.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

What can I say about this book? It's fabulous, one of my favorites in the series. I can't really pick one that is better than the others because they all add to the overall storyline. This is an amazing series. I am a big fan of Candace's work and the fact that this series ties the other ones together is awesome. For those that haven't read the other books in the series, do it! If you haven't read any of the other series you should read those too! I need more Kirsten in my life so I hope the next book comes quick. Fantastic job by Candace Blevins!

Wow just wow

Book 5 of Kirsten's story is just as good as the first. Take the trip to China with her daughter as she learns from Kirsten teacher, immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells in ways only Candace can.

Come to learn deep meditation and the feelings involved.

The usual cast of characters make me want more but then we get to meet new ones and that doesn't help my greed for more.

I had a hard time saying goodbye to this chapter of the continuing saga but look forward to where else I will get to go.

Kirsten's story continues. The book is NOT at all a standalone, so read in order.

If you have read the series to this stage you should understand that Kirsten can go dark. In the first part of this book, she goes VERY dark on Gavin.

Most of the book takes place in China. And not wandering around cities that Westerners see on TV. It is clear that the author knows and loves the culture and the geography of the nation. That part of the book is an absolute delight, as Kirsten evolves in her power.

Highly recommended.

I love this series and Edge of Humanity just increases that love. As much as I have a very twisted thing for Gavin, he got what he deserved and that was a very intense scene! I was on the edge of my seat as Kirstin traveled and learned and grew and I tried really hard to beat her to the conclusion and couldn't. Her reunion with Nathan is one I won't forget and it fit perfectly into the story. I can't wait for the next installment!!

Stunning addition to the Only Human Series by Candace Blevins

I stayed up all night reading this book, couldn’t put it down and now it’s finished...
Candace Blevins is a master at writing such a compelling story, the fine balance of plot, action and characters is just perfect. Read more about Kirsten and other favourites from this superb addition to the Chattanooga paranormal series.

Interesting twist

So many different dynamics of the supernatural world came out in this story. Kirsten is a great Mom & she knew just what Lauren needed to be ready & safe for college. Of course I loved them being in Boston & Cambridge (I live in Cambridge). Always get a good feeling knowing they're supposed to be in my territory.

Kirsten is a bad-ass!! What a person could do with all that power. At 60 I'd feel so safe. You know?

Anyway Enjoy!!!

The Only Human Series is one of my all time favorite series. Every time a new book in the series comes out, I devour it. Edge of Humanity was no exception. Kirsten is a kick ass character and I cannot get enough of her. Edge of Humanity takes you on a journey through China and beyond. A skillful masterpiece. I absolutely loved it.
