Paul Bellow‘s Tower of Gates grows more and more complex, and that’s never more the case than in its third book, Hero. This does exactly what a LitRPG novel is supposed to do, give you the total gaming feeling (and I’m a lifelong gamer so I should know) while providing an outer story that’s intriguing and enjoyable. It’s no spoiler to note that here the outer story is the use of an immersive RPG universe as a prison, or that the AI running things is, well, in layman’s terms going dangerously mad. What’s do well done here is leaving open who the good guys and bad guys are, both in the outer world (I challenge you to tell if Eric’s dad is good or evil) and the inner game world (are Eric, Sarah and Josh even fighting on the right side?). Really incredibly neat - and fun - stuff. While you simply have to start with (the excellent) book 1 in this series, I can guarantee you’ll love this one by the time you get to it. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

This review covers books three through six that I read consecutively. So far the series has shown the less pleasant side of human nature. The story is imaginative with interesting twists of plot. The decisions and actions of the characters are sometimes baffling and illogical. All characters in the book appear to have the inability to learn from past mistakes. The main characters themselves at times appear to have the same personality with a mediocre dose of arrogance. Situations and their solutions at times seem to be contrived.

The actions of the characters and the situations were hard to stomach until I had a change of perspective. The question I came up with is "Are their actions due to the style of writing of the author or are they being heavily influenced by the AI?" I was able to utilize suspension of belief by choosing the latter. I have found my enjoyment of the series to increase as I follow it further and look forward to seeing future growth and more of the world created by Mr. Bellow.

Very Respectfully,
Shea

This book was much better edited than book number 2 in this series. The story maybe wasn't as good, but it sure ran a whole lot smoother without the kinds of errors found in the second book.
It's a good story, and I'm certainly waiting for more in the series, I'd like to see how they get out of the game, and also, I'm curious what the rest of the 1-x levels look like. Not as much detail on the world in this one, but the story flowed well enough that it really wasn't necessary as a whole, so that turned out to be ok.

The game gets darker an darker as the story progresses. In this instance we get to see a hero, we even see a quest to meet a hero. But is he really one?

As the story progresses the characters get less defined as the game characters they play get to be more defined. Even without penalties for out of character specking the game keeps pushing for the game persona to be the real one.

It's really scary and the jolly party will never be the same.
