One thing you can say about the apocalypse, the traffic problem seems to be solved
But that’s about all, especially for one American ex-pat stranded in France and trying to make the best of it. When a fellow American at the nearby alien detention camp is accused of murdering her French lover it’s up to Jules to prove she didn’t do it. Jules will travel to Aix-en-Provence to see how her countrywoman was forced to live after the lights turned off, to uncover the people who betrayed her—and why—and finally to confront the ruthless female warden of the alien detention camp who is determined to make her American prisoner pay—not just for the murdered Frenchman, but for the apocalypse itself.
Check out Book 7 in the Stranded in Provence cozy mystery series. Genre: light cozy mystery, women amateur sleuth, animal (dog) (cat)
After a visit to the American internment camp, Jules realizes that there is a woman being held prisoner there for a murder she may or may not have committed. Though her friends and family also need her support, Jules turns her attention to this unknown person hoping to clear her of the crime.
When I first began this series, the premise of being stranded in a strange country after an apoplectic event seemed so close to science fiction; now we're living in circumstances that are if not similar, then akin to next-door neighbours. World events have shaped my view of this series - I have incredible respect for the author who wrote this long before we were plunged into our current lives.
The heroine is as engaging as always and, as always, she's found her way into a scrape due to her nature. Jules needs to right wrongs, not because she's a do-gooder or because she has a hero complex, but because she simply is unable to allow a miscarry of justice to occur. And yet, Jules is also a little bit flawed herself and that makes her so absolutely endearing.
In case it's not obvious, I adore this series. I spent most of the time I should be asleep reading this because I couldn't wait to see how the book resolved itself. It did not disappoint!
The internment camps have now opened and Jules early on visits the camp close by her village (where she would be interned as an American if not for her fake marriage to Marco). Most of the American women seem content in the camp, but as Jules is leaving she spots one woman clearly locked in a cell and miserable. When Jules learns the woman has been arrested for murdering her lover, Jules decides to investigate, against the wishes of everyone.
Things are changing in the village as well, with some new revelations about a number of inhabitants, and the ending of the town's mayoral election.
Overall I enjoyed this one, and would give it a B/B-, so four stars here.
This series is amazing! In this particular episode, Ms Kiernan-Lewis has achieved a great balance using similes and metaphors resulting in amusement and shattering excitement that leaves you in tears, and at times you're laughing so hard that you're falling off your chair. By this time, you are in love with the characters, particularly Les Soeurs and Jules with her sarcastic funny comments, and the development of her inner self resulting in loving her existence and the people who have become important to her. Thank you so much for this series. This is a must read book.
Jules visits an interment camp where the woman seem content while waiting to go home but as she walks past another building she sees a woman's terrified face behind bars and immediately asks who she is. When finding out she's a fellow countryman, she sets out to help her and almost gets herself killed in the process. Lots of twists and turns that will keep you guessing. Very enjoyable
Each book in the Provence series is better than the one before. Well almost! I can’t wait to see what Jules gets up to next. From farm to Aix and to detention camp! She cannot seem to stay out of trouble! Le Souers and Luc certainly have their hands full! I can hardly wait till the next book. I’m totally into these books!
Like many other reviewers, I have enjoyed the Stranded in Provence series a lot. This one did not disappoint. The author always delivers an unusual ending, and I surely did not see this ending coming, as usual. Enjoyable characters, edge of your seat action, challenging mystery and, romance, of course. Good read!
Good story. A little far fetched. But I love Susan's books especially about France and the Provence part. I enjoy the romanticism between Jules and Luc and wish them well. I hope they marry soon. And I hope there is a new story about Jules decision to stay in south France with Luc and possibly their babies.
and most of all I have read entire series to date (1-8) and find the EMP condition compared to Covid-19 and what we all going through. Luckily we have electricity and gas for the cars but many things are the same.
There is a really good, compelling story in there somewhere. Sadly, it just read more like an outline than a fleshed-out novel. The villan came out of nowhere. The main protagonist was a bit slow on the uptake. I would recommend reading while sitting on beach as the characters are well drawn and memorable.
Love this series. Jules visits the camp where Americans are being held at the request of her friend Katrine. She sees that the Americans are being treated well. Upon leaving she sees a distressed woman being held in solitary confinement. This is the start of Jules troubles. A must read to see what happens next.
I loved this book. A very fresh plot line, so appropriate given the times of near apocalypse that we are now living in. I admit the multi generational characters, mystery, clever word play and description of delish French cuisine
3.5 Quick fun read and this one got a bit darker and more interesting with a story from the sisters’ time in the French Resistance. Some tedious characters and sub plots
Pre-ordered, will be published 9/4/18. Oh joy! It appeared in my library early.... can't wait to read it!
Great mystery! I love Jules, a feisty, impetuous American making her way in France after a bomb over the Mediterranean destroyed the electrical grid stranding her in a small town in Provence. You must read this series in order to thoroughly appreciate the clever ongoing plot. And thank you Susan for promising the next one in the series, Wined and Died, already preordered.
