Using objects recovered from the Titanic ’s shipwreck, this book tells the tale of the doomed ship’s discovery, the disaster that sank her, and the human stories behind the tragedy.
Focusing on Robert Ballard's historic discovery of Titanic and the expeditions that followed, this fascinating book takes children on an unforgettable journey through the remains of the sunken ship. Stunning photography of the wreck, archival images, and modern reconstructions bring the story back to life, from the opulent liner’s construction to the night she fatally foundered. Eye-catching elements including infographics provide accessible statistics and an analysis of the sinking, while personal artifacts recovered from the wreck introduce the passengers who sailed on this doomed voyage and offer an intimate, human view of the tragedy.

From Carlton Books comes Discovering Titanic: Searching for the Stories Behind the Shipwreck. Covering everything from its construction to the recovery efforts to its place in pop-culture, author Ben Hubbard does an impressive job at presenting all the different aspects of the Titanic. Structured as a series of collages featuring quotes, ship and passenger artifacts, diagrams, and photographs, Hubbard is able to review a large swath of information simply and effectively. And the annotations for each item are well-written; conveying their meaning and significance. However, taking such a broad overview necessitates leaving a lot out and some of the human drama that makes the story so moving and relatable is lost. Yet while it has its weaknesses, Discovering Titanic: Searching for the Stories Behind the Shipwreck is a remarkable and captivating look at the life and legacy of this extraordinary ship.
Important to note - my copy does not look like this one. I checked and there are no other editions listed on goodreads. My copy does have an UPC code from the UK.
This book was full of photos of artifacts brought up from the ship. I object to this practice but I cannot deny the allure of seeing actual Titanic artifacts... my students would love to see these pictures.
Why I took off 2 stars: the computer renderings of the ship are off. The bow of the ship is snub-nosed and oddly rounded off in these illustrations. The colors are a bit off. When the ships lights are on, not enough are on. The book did not need these renderings so I am unsure why they were even included. Unfortunately, they lead off every chapter.
Recommended as an accompanying text to a Titanic unit/study.
Learned a few new things which is always fantastic considering how many books I’ve read on this topic!
“I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern ship building has gone beyond.”Edward Smith.
