The Finnish-Swedish writer and artist Tove Jansson achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomin stories, written between 1945 and 1970 and still in print in more than twenty languages. However, the Moomins were only a part of her prodigious output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia's best loved author.

Tove Jansson's work reflected the tenets of her life: her love of family (and special bond with her mother), of nature, and her insistence on freedom to pursue her art. Love and work was the motto she chose for herself and her approach to both was joyful and uncompromising. If her relationships with men foundered on her ambivalence towards marriage, those with women came as a revelation, especially the love and companionship she found with her long-time partner, the artist Tuulikki Pietilä, with whom she lived on the solitary island of Klovharu.

In this meticulously researched, authorised biography, Boel Westin draws together the many threads of Jansson's life: from the studies interrupted to help her family; the dark shades of war and her emergence as an artist with a studio of her own; to the years of Moomin-mania, and later novel writing. Pierwsza myśl, która przychodzi do głowy po przeczytaniu biografii Jansson to podziw: dla objętości (471 stron + dodatki) oraz zawartości: wypełniają ją unikatowe fotografie z rodzinnego archiwum, a przede wszystkim zdjęcia listów i pamiętników oraz dzieł Tove (np. fenomenalna i bardzo osobista Graficzka). Rzecz jasna, książka to przede wszystkim opis życia i sztuki – jest więc rodzina (zwłaszcza rodzice-artyści), młodość Tove, której charakter i talent kształtowały się w czasach drugiej wojny światowej, Muminki, malarstwo, grafika i powolne odchodzenie Jansson od obrazu ku słowu. Wszystko przedstawione na tle zmian społecznych, osobistych, literackich. Wiele cytatów pochodzi z pamiętników i korespondencji Artystki. Boel Westin szczegółowo opisała dzieła Tove – stworzone pędzlem, piórkiem i piórem. Niejaki bałagan chronologiczny wkradł się w okolicach lat 40., kiedy to natłok wątków, zdarzeń i uczuć być może uniemożliwił Autorce opisanie wszystkiego w bardziej uporządkowany sposób. Nie utrudnia to jednak dramatycznie lektury, czytelnik musi tylko parę razy cofnąć się do momentów, które już zostały opisane pod innym kątem.

Osobiście brakowało mi wyjaśnienia, jak wyglądała kwestia języka i tożsamości narodowej Tove i jej rodziny. W książce są tylko wzmianki o potrzebie szlifowania fińskiego czy konfliktu z ojcem w kwestii poparcia różnych sojuszników w czasie wojny.

Jednak największy zawód (poza oczywiście radością z samego faktu opublikowania tej biografii po polsku) sprawiło mi wydawnictwo. JAK MOŻNA zatytułować biografię Jansson „Mama Muminków”, jeśli:

- oryginalny tytuł brzmi Tove Jansson. Ord, bild, liv – co (według internetowego słownika) oznacza TJ. Słowo, obraz, życie,

- Tove-artystka stworzyła coś więcej niż same Muminki: była malarką, graficzką, autorką fresków, okładek i satyrycznych rysunków do gazet, powieści dla dorosłych, dramatów, ilustracji do Alicji w Krainie Czarów i Hobbita,

- w jednej z autoanaliz, zmęczona fenomenem małego trolla wyznała: „Rzygać mi się chciało na te Muminki” (s. 270),

- na okładce zamieszczono zdjęcie Tove, a z tyłu grafikę jej autorstwa – wszystko w otoczeniu jakiegoś zyliona Muminków.

Jestem wielbicielką Muminków odkąd sięgnęłam po nie jako pięciolatka, część egzemplarzy z serii musiałam niedawno wymienić, bo od zaczytania wylatywały z nich wszystkie kartki. Równie wysoko cenię powieść Lato i wiem, że na pewno sięgnę po inne książki, które Jansson pisała dla dorosłych. Ale po przeczytaniu jej biografii wiem też, że utrwalanie postaci Tove w powszechnej świadomości jako „tej pani od Muminków” jest głęboko niesprawiedliwe.

I loved Moomins as a child, and so did my father before me. I was eager to learn more about the life and inspirations of Tove Jansson.

I have mixed feelings towards this particular biography, as it is not a biography in the strict sense of the word. There's a lot more space devoted to interpretation of Jansson's works and paintings, while the facts from life, dates, etc. are all chaotic and jumbled - people appear and disappear suddenly, the writer jumps a decade ahead when talking about early childhood.

As a biography - it's a difficult read to follow, however it is still a source of great knowledge on the author, especially if someone is interested more in tracing her inspirations, emotions and thoughts throughout her novels. The book excels at presenting the artist. I think it's due to the fact that the author - prof. Boel Westin - has devoted her academic career to unraveling Tove Jansson.

Thus it is, in my opinion, a must-read for all those who want to explore all the secrets that are hidden in the Moomin Valley. Those who want to focus on the artist's life rather than her works however may find themselves disappointed.

Czytałam po raz drugi tę bardzo ciekawie napisaną biografię. Po pierwsze na uwagę zasługuje wydanie – piękne, bogato ilustrowane, duże, czytelnie przygotowane. Po drugie mamy tu to, co mnie zawsze zachwyca w biografiach pisarek, czyli pochylenie się nie tyle nad samym życiem, ile nad sztuką i twórczością. Westin podsuwa wiele kluczy interpretacyjnych, osadza dzieła Jansson w kontekście, ale także pokazuje ich uniwersalność. Nic tylko żałować, że wszystkiego, co Tove napisała dla dorosłych, nie ma po polsku.

Worthy but dull. I got very little sense of Jansson's personality or thought amongst the dense parade of facts, and I felt there was a distinct lack of context, to place her in the society and life of the time.

Nie jest to zła książka, ale myślę, że im bardziej ktoś robi doktorat z Mamy Muminków, tym bardziej będzie się radował podczas lektury. Ja, niestety, czuję się przytłoczony ilością faktów i drobiazgowością tej biografii. Miło było poczytać o niezwykłej Autorce, ale ani nie jestem po lekturze bogatszy w wiedzę (większość informacji zwyczajnie uleciała, błyskawicznie przysypana kolejnymi faktami), ani nie będę inaczej patrzył na muminkowe uniwersum.

Tove Jansson is perhaps the most famous Finnish artist ever, known primarily for the Moomins - a family of friendly hippopotamus-like trolls - and the adventures they have with all manner of characters in Moominvalley. However, as Boel Westin shows, Jansson was a prolific author and painter throughout her life whose love of art - painting especially so - drove her forward.

Westin has been granted extensive access to Jansson's archives, correspondence, and works and her biography is rich in detail. Throughout the book, Westin explores the thematic links between Jansson's artistic output, how her novels and paintings display the inner workings of the artist's mind; the literary criticism Westin provides is a welcome addition to scholarly discussion of Jansson's literary works and Moomin series, which at face-value seem just books written for children, are in fact deeply grounded in Jansson's own experiences of the Second World War (The Moomins and the Great Flood and Comet in Moominland), her relationships with her father and mother (and their own respective relationships) (Moominpappa at Sea) and her relationship on a meta-fictional level with the series itself (Moominvalley in November). The series is surprisingly multi-faceted and later instalments showcase the difficulty in classifying Jansson's work as strictly for children.

Westin chronologically follows Jansson through life and the reader gains a valuable insight not only into the work of this author and artist, but also into the life and love of Jansson. This deeply-personal level of narration focuses on the two things in Jansson's life that she deemed most important: work and love. Work has already been mentioned above; as for love, it her her love of work but also her love of family and Tuulikki Pietilä that comes through Westin's writing. Yet, it is Tove Jansson's own work that bears the strongest testimony to these two loves. Pietilä and Jansson feature in several works that have a distinctly autobiographical feel to them - Fair Play being chief among them.

One of Finland's most decorated and talented artists, and also one of most notable writers in Swedish, Tove Jansson is, Philip Pullman said, "a genius" and Boel Westin's detailed and well-researched biography will be the standard work on her life for many years to come. This book offers a fascinating insight not only into her work and analysis thereof, but also her life - a life lived in service to love and to art.

Nie do końca wiem jak ocenić tę książkę więc najbezpieczniej będzie chyba pozostać przy ocenie 3.5/5. Niewątpliwie jest to istna skarbnica wiedzy na temat Tove Jansson, zarówno jej życia jak i twórczości. Jednakże to co można poczytać za zaletę w moich oczach stało się też największą wadą. Mam wrażenie, że ta książka w pewnym momencie sama już nie wie czym chce być. Zaciera się granica między przybliżeniem czytelnikom informacji na temat życia autorki "Muminków" a analizą jej twórczości szeroko pojętej. Książka jest też dość nierówna. Przez około 350 stron mamy rzetelnie prowadzony wywód, a przy ostatnich 150 rozpoczyna się takie przyspieszenie w jakim pociągi na polskich torach nigdy nie pojadą. Odniosłam wrażenie, że autorka sama poczuła się już sfrustrowana tym co napisała i chciała to jak najszybciej zakończyć. Nie sprawia to, że w jakikolwiek sposób odejmuję jej zasługi. Co to, to nie nawet nie jestem w stanie wyobrazić sobie ile pracy i czasu musiała włożyć w stworzenie tej książki. Czuję się zainteresowana na tyle aby dalej zgłębiać wiedzę na temat Tove Jansson oraz samych "Muminków".

Przytłaczająca, to chyba będzie najlepsze określenie. Cóż z tego, że jestem pod wrażeniem liczby zgromadzonych tu faktów, skoro i tak prawie żadnego z nich nie zapamiętam? Ilustracji sporo, to niewątpliwy atut tej książki, ale niestety nie dowiedziałam się niczego o Muminkach. Wprawdzie autorka drobiazgowo omawia poszczególne części tej kultowej serii, ale trudno nazwać tę analizę zajmującą. Miejscami robiło się naprawdę nudno.

to naprawdę wspaniała i pełna informacji książka, czyta się ją świetnie, zwłaszcza przy akompaniamencie "Listów" które dodają jej dużo wiarygodności - ale polskie wydanie sprawia że chce się ją rzucić w kąt. przez pół tekstu wielokrotnie wspominana jest niechęć Tove do bycia kojarzoną wyłącznie z muminkami, zrywała pracę z wydawnictwami które narzucały to połączenie - a tu ktoś zdecydował że unhhhh książka bez muminkow na okładce się nie sprzeda, dajcie zdjęcia, zmieńcie tytuł! ugh.

Czytając miałam wrażenie, że autorka nie umiała dokonać selekcji materiału. Wyszła strasznie chaotyczna dłużyzna. Ni to biografia, ni analiza i interpretacja twórczości. Polski podtytuł (Mama Muminków) jest chyba zamierzony jako pstryczek w nos Tove.

When I first read a Moomin story almost 30 years ago, and then when I rediscovered it a couple of years ago, I never knew that I opened a huge can of...

Well, not worms. Wonders.

After the adorable trolls I got interested in the woman who wrote them. Tove Jansson was an author... but also an artist? Painter? And she was bisexual??? And had spent the last third of her life with a female partner? And owned an island???

The deeper I go, the more layers I discover. I thought often how hard is to acquire a female role model, someone you can admire, who you aspire to emulate, of whom you'd maybe put a poster up on your wall.

Now, I'm in my middle age so I don't really have posters on my walls - but if I was still a teenager, Tove Jansson would would be up there.

Dzięki biografii z pod pióra Boel Westin poznałem bliżej słynną fińską pisarkę. To bardzo ciekawa lektura. Książka jest pełna wspomnień, fragmentów listów i pamiętników samej Tove. Dzięki tej biografii łatwiej jest nam zrozumieć wybory artystyczne fińskiej autorki, a także autobiograficzne elementy w jej twórczości. Jansson to nie jedynie autorka słynnego cyklu o trollach ale wszechstronna malarka, artystka, która swoją innowacyjnością wyróżniała się na tle swoich czasów. Gorąco polecam.

This book was dominated by chaos, and it felt a bit like a textbook 😕 It was tiring to jump along the timeline - neither chronological nor thematic order, I was constantly getting lost. I would also like to see more illustrations, practically every description of a drawing / painting should have a photo. I know that then the books would be 3x thicker and more expensive and there could be problems with copyright, but what can I do - I would like that 😉 The easiest to read were the chapters about Moomins (because I was curious), and the most interesting - fragments of Tove's letters, because then she "spoke" herself, without the author's filter. 'Cause how does she know what Tove felt, what she thought? To what extent does it result from letters, notes and how much is her interpretation?
Tove gives the impression of an "artistic soul", you can see a great need to constantly create(and a bit of a workaholism resulting from it). It was sad how much the Moomins had tired her and how she had to fight for "power" over them.
Many times when reading I had the thought: "I'd rather read Moomins" 😉 Especially since I only know them from cartoon 😅 I have to finally read them some day.

A must-read for any Tove Jansson fan! I knew a bit about her life from the BBC documentary but this book goes into further detail about the progression of her art, writing, and the Moomins. If you liked the documentary you will like this even more. She really was a fascinating woman and reading this book has only increased my admiration for her. The book itself is written well and has illustrations and photographs throughout (this might not be that important but as an art student I always give extra points for pictures in books.) A+!!!

Una joya. Existen varias biografías sobre Tove Jansson y ésta es la primera que leo. El libro fue un regalo y la lectura un disfrute continuo. Llegué motivada para profundizar en el origen de los Moomin y contextualizar a la autora pero no esperaba descubrir a una artista tan compleja, multidisciplinar y avanzada a su tiempo. Las reflexiones artísticas, su pasión por los diarios y la correspondencia, su necesidad de viajar, la devoción familiar, el contacto con la naturaleza... son tantos los temas que dan forma a su vida y su obra que no es de extrañar que cualquiera de sus creaciones tuviera tantísima carga autobiográfica. Como pegas señalaré que a veces los saltos en el tiempo se hacían algo confusos y la continua sensación de insatisfacción de Tove llega a resultar cargante y pedante en ocasiones. Hay unos temas centrales tan definidos que a veces el recuento de obras y pensamientos se hace repetitivo, pero en ningún momento me llegó a cansar. La autora de la biografía, Boel Westin, hace un trabajo de documentación increíble y evidentemente respetuoso.

Me ha fascinado. Hacía mucho que no leía algo que me enganchara tanto y que provocara en mí tantísimas ganas de crear. No sé qué me puede más tras terminar este libro, si las ganas de dibujar, de escribir o de leer.

książka jest przepięknie wydana, bo zawiera mnóstwo zdjęć, rysunków, grafik i autentycznych listów. do tego nie tylko jest biografią, ale także studium twórczości - na temat każdej noweli, książki, opowiadania jest sporo informacji, wiele interpretacji i rozważań. ale niestety tytuł polskiego wydania to moim zdaniem brak szacunku, bo jak można biografię kobiety, która bardzo dbała o swoją wolność i niezależność, i która miała serdecznie dość łączenia ją tylko z Muminkami i traktowania jako źródło popularności i pieniędzy, wręcz pisała, że "rzyga Muminkami" nazwać "Mama Muminków"?

To be honest, I didn't really know whether I'd like the book. I only knew it's a huge one and that I want to get to know Tove better. It turned out to be a wonderful read, from the beginning to the end - not only I admire the author for gathering all the information and making a gripping biography - I cannot stop feeling utterly enraptured with Tove's dazzling life. She was an artist you don't meet often - combining painting on canvas and painting frescos, illustrating, drawing comic strips, with writing novels, short stories and novellas, theatre plays and songs. It's really unfair most people associate her only with the Moomin world (although I do love it). If you want to get to know the life of a very talented woman for whom love and work were the most important things in the world, I can't recommend it more ^^
