Beowulf: En gendigtning

Rate this book

The story takes place in Denmark and the Danish poet Grundtvig was the first to translate it in its entirety. It was translated it into Danish in 1820 and the first English translation was done in 1837.

It is the first literary work laying the foundation of the Anglo-saxon self-understanding - yet the story takes place in Denmark. The hero is a norroen/germanic figure. The story is placed in real historic surroundings - yet it has the form of a fairy tale and the hero is battling mythological monsters. The heroes are heathen - yet they speak as christians.

Beowulf should be part of school education in Denmark. That's how short it can be said.

The story takes place in around the year 500, mainly in Lejre in Denmark with the story of e.g. King Roar and his giant hall Heorot. In today's Denmark, you have Lejre/Gl. Lejre found remains of several settlements, including the largest royal hall we know from the Viking Age in Denmark and testify that Lejre/Gl. Lejre in reality could have been the seat of a royal power, including the legendary royal family Skjoldungerne, which according to legend includes Skjold, Roar, Helge, Rolf Krake, Regnar Lodbrog and Harald Hildetand.

The story itself tells of Beowulf from Göterland in Sweden, who helps King Roar to fight a monster, after which Beowulf travels home, becomes king there and later dies in battle against a dragon. The retelling of Keld Zeruneith is in a modern language and therefore easy to read. So there is no excuse not to read the book...
