Ten years ago, Riley Tanager disappeared from my life without so much as a goodbye. He was more than my best friend, he was my world.
And unbeknownst to him, he was also my first love.
His memory haunts me. I long to see his stormy gray eyes again or feel his gentle touch. My sister tells me to move on, but how can I when he took a piece of my heart?
When work takes me to a small coastal town in search of a missing heirloom, I end up finding the greatest treasure of all. The foster boy I once drew comic books with is now a beautiful talented man… and as crazy as it seems, my heart still knows him.
But does Riley still know me? Does he even want to? Or is ten years too long to hope for Riley to come back to me?
I am an Idaho native who grew up dreaming about traveling the world and writing stories. As a child, I would often spend my spare time curled up with my favorite blanket and a notebook, writing another fairy tale. I never would have guessed those fairy tales would one day grow into gay romances, but that is where my heart led me and I am so glad it did. I write about love because I believe it can happen to anyone, with anyone. I also believe dreams never expire, redemption is possible, and true forgiveness can heal us in ways we never expect. I know firsthand how messy life can get, but as any artist will tell you, a little mess is needed to create something beautiful. That’s why I write, to help others see that anything can be beautiful. You can often find me with a mug of coffee in one hand and a dog toy in the other. There is never a day that goes by without my sweet boy insisting on a game - or twenty - of fetch.
You ever watch a movie trailer and immediately want to go see the movie, only to go see it and discover that the trailer was the best the movie had to offer? Yeah, that's what you're going to get here.
That blurb really sucks you in, along with the first couple of chapters, but then everything begins to fall apart.
Let's start with the positives:
- I really loved the connection that Riley and Beckett formed while young boys in foster care. I also really love that their foster parents didn't fall into the "horrible people" cliche, but were a wonderfully supportive couple who cared about Riley and Beckett, both individually and with understanding of how important their bond was.
- Same goes for Riley's grandfather. It may have been a rocky start, but it's clear he loved his grandson.
- I loved the feel of the small seaside town of Reedsport. The author really painted a cute picture of a charming and quaint town where residents looked after their community.
Now, what didn't work:
- For the most part, the characters felt immature and child like. Each chapter begins with a flashback of their time in foster care showing a snippet of the development of their bond, which like I said I liked, but there was no difference in voice between past and present. Both guys sounded and acted exactly the same as their younger selves.
And in the present, at times they downright sounded like virginal teenagers. These are supposed to be two men in their mid to late twenties, which I think the author only remembered on occasion.
- Lots and lots of internal dialogue. These two don't talk about shit. Well, except towards the end where the author needed to fill in a bunch of plot holes so Beckett and Riley had this really awkward Q&A session. But other than that, most of their conversations lacked any real substance.
- The transition of their relationship from friends to friends reunited to lovers was awkward as all hell. The two have been pining for each other for YEARS, they FINALLY share a kiss and then proceed to chat about Riley's refridgerator and home decor?? WTF?
Their first time together continued down the awkward trail....Beckett's all "I wanna sit naked with you under the stars" and then he's all "let me take off your clothes" and then he starts rubbing up on Riley's nipples. Mind you, there STILL HASN'T BEEN A DISCUSSION ABOUT THEIR RELATIONSHIP! It was just weird...and you guessed it, AWKWARD. It made me uncomfortable to read.
And to be honest, all the sex scenes were uncomfortable to read. They tried too hard, felt robotic and formulaic, and if I'm being SUPER HONEST, it felt like how someone who's uncomfortable with sex would write about sex trying to make it sound sexy. Does that make sense? Basically, I would have preferred fade to black.
Even by the end, they never REALLY have a discussion about their relationship at all.
- Towards the end the author decided to start chucking drama everywhere. It made no sense. All of a sudden you have illnesses and suicide attempts and tantrums and when the big "reveal" happened as to why Riley and Beckett were kept apart, the word "unstable" kept getting thrown around. No explaination. That's a serious word, you can't just use it without any type of sensitivity to the meaning. It was a throwaway, lazy and insensitive excuse.
And then randomly, there is a one sentence drive-by that insinuates that Beckett may have been a cutter?
- Beckett's sister, Tosh, is a selfish asshole. I hated her from beginning to end and Ben should divorce her ass and raise their child away from her.
- Having a small child give sage advice, act like an adult, and be used as a plot device to (1) evoke emotion, (2) stir up drama, and (3) take the easy way out to close plot holes by asking questions that a child of that age would seriously NOT ASK only works for me in rare circumstances...IT DID NOT WORK HERE.
- While there is promise in the author's writing capibility....sometimes you gotta stay away from the thesaurus. No young teen is using the word "meloncholy" to say how they're feeling. SAD, a 13 year old is SAD. The writing veered into a formality that felt too forced. The book isn't being graded by an English professor. Things needed to loosen up. There's no personality here. It felt so stilted.
-The pacing about killed me. Why? Because there is none. There's no feeling of forward momentum. You're not moving towards anything. I was easily distracted and found myself bored way too many times.
And then somewhere towards the end, the author remembered that they needed to set up things for the next couple and started throwing in random clues and conversations.
- That mystery/suspense element...complete throwaway. I don't know why it was there other than to give Beckett a reason to go to Reedsport. It was under-developed and underwhelming.
I'm going to finish my review by letting you know that this book is a debut. So do what you will with that piece of information.
Overall, I'm bummed that the book didn't work for me...because that blurb really held some promise...but I can't be anything less than honest.

I liked this second chance love story a lot, it's really sweet and nice, but I didn't love it. Maybe because this isn't really my favourite kind of book.. anyway, it took me a while to warm up at the story. Especially at the beginning, I must admit, I was really bored, but then I started to enjoy it more. I'll read the second book in the series, I am curious enough about Jake's story!
Kim Breyon has debuted a very engaging book about young love and second chances. At 10 years old, Riley is placed in the same foster home as Beckett, 13, soon becoming each other’s best friends. After a few years, Beckett owes to live with his older sister but is still nearby. He leaves for a college tour and upon his return, finds that Riley has disappeared. No one will tell him what happened due in part to legal restrictions but other obstacles are later revealed. Years after, working as a PI, Beckett still searches but it’s only by coincidence that he finds Riley again, and I liked the added aura of fated lovers to the story. The slow burn for this couple makes complete sense with so much to explain and share in getting to know each other again, Steamy scenes are done well and emotion and passion is evident.
Flashbacks can be tricky but were needed here to illustrate the depth of their connection and circumstances around the separation. They weren’t chronological but comprised only a few paragraphs at the start of each chapter, often relating to a scenario set in the present. Alternating POV’s helped in creating empathy with the characters and their “voices” were quite distinct from each other. First person isn’t always a favorite of mine but worked well enough here. Secondary characters were strongly written, like Jake, Beckett’s good friend and Amelia, who is Riley’s. Beckett’s sister Tosh was rather confusing and some revelations and motives of hers came out in a kind of choppy fashion. I also had a few questions which were never fully answered in the narrative but that didn’t detract from the overall storyline.
The book held my interest strongly, providing a lot of feeling and emotion for the young teens parted so abruptly and the now-grown men recapturing their younger emotions. I was heartbroken for them discovering a betrayal by someone trusted and anticipation of how they could manage as a long-distance couple. The catalyst for a solution is kind of sad but it’s an extremely solid and bright HEA in the end. I'm now looking forward to reading the next book with Jake, to find out what makes him such a player. It’s always a pleasure to find another good author to enjoy and I can recommend this first offering as a good comfort read.
*An ARC was provided by the author, publisher or a promotional service and I have chosen to publish a fair and honest review for Jessie G Books Reviews blog*
Nicely done. But gosh there were a lot of tears. Both main characters developed a bond when they needed comfort only to be ripped apart. They found each other by happenstance now they worried if their connection was still there. The story was well written characters strongly developed and the story was not over the top of too drawn out! Will look forward to Jake's story!!
I loved Beckett. He was protective and supportive and I just felt he was a good man that deserved better than what he'd gotten. I really liked Riley, but since we only got Beck's POV in the first few chapters, it took me longer to connect with him. I wasn't sure what to think of his reticence to invite Beck back into his house, and even when he explained his motives, I still wasn't too sure I understood it. Anyway, after we started getting some chapters with his perspective it was certainly easier getting to know and warm up to him. It was undeniable he had also gone through a lot, so it was lovely to see them finally getting their HEA. They had great chemistry and fit well together and I loved seeing the progression of their relationship.
Regarding the secondary characters, I am very intrigued by Jake and can't wait for his story and I liked Amelia, who seemed a nice friend to Riley/Preston. I loved Harper and the dogs and I hated Tosh with a passion. Really, what she did to Beckett and Riley was horrible, no matter how she tried to spin it.
The writing style was good and flowed well. While I'm not particularly fond of flashbacks, I liked the way the author managed to weave present and past in this story. I think other than feeling there were too many things happening, Beck and Riley rekindling their relationship, the case Beckett was working on with the stolen treasure box (which left some unanswered questions for me), the whole deal with Amelia and her ex-boyfriend and then with Tosh and her lies. It was just a little too much at times.
Overall, this was a solid debut novel for new author Kim Breyon. The book was entertaining, the characters (both main and secondary) were likable and while there are a few things that needed some tightening, it was still a very good read and I'll be looking forward to Jake's book and seeing more of Beck and Riley in the future.

Wow! This book definitely packs an emotional punch. Our first book from Kim Breyon, definitely not the last that I will be reading from her. I can't wait for book 2! We meet Beckett, currently working as a PI, who heads to Reedsport on a case and stumbles across someone he's been looking for for 10 years. Riley was his best friend and so much more but one day just disappeared but Beckett has never forgotten, constantly living with a hole in his chest that Riley left. Upon his discovery, he discovers the feelings that he had for his friend have never wavered and now intensify as they struggle to find a new normal after so long apart. Within the first few pages the Beckett is pulling on your heartstrings. He feels things so much but doesn't show that to anyone else. He's led quite a lonely life since losing Riley, going into the army and then working as a PI. The hope and happiness he experiences upon finding his friend is a big difference to the despair and isolation he had before. It soon leads to uncertainty with both men having experienced life while apart, unsure of themselves and each other. We have a few secondary characters, with one or two especially playing a major role in how the story plays out. When certain things are revealed, oh it brings you close to tears with the hurt and pain that is felt by our MC's. Kim's writing is wonderfully descriptive. Reedsport sounds like a beautiful town on the coast and I can just imagine Riley's artwork, bringing happiness and support to the town making it and him an important fixture to the town residents. Her characters and setting are beautiful, pulling you into the story, making you care about them and the outcome and I cannot wait to hear more from her. One of my favourite parts is the beginning of each chapter we get a small flashback but each one is relevant to the chapter and helps you to understand more about our MC's and how they came to be who and where they are today. Everyone needs to read this - contemporary romance, friends to lovers, hurt/comfort, so much contained in the book. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
This lovestory is incredibly sweet. Usually flashbacks bother me, but this time I thought they were well inserted and fitting to the novel. If you like friends-to-lovers and knowing what each MC is thinking, this one is for you! But I was very surprised that people found it super dramatic, I mean, yes, It's sad at times and I was very intetested to see which role Beckett's sister might have had in keeping them apart, and oh all of that heartache! But you won't suffer at an Amy Lane's Chase in Shadow scale, that's like 1.000% on the angsty scale. This one is like a 60% maybe? As for the awesome images this book creates, I loved the fact that one of the MC's is an artist and how Kim Breyon describes his art and his ideas. The only thing that threw me off a bit was the age gap when they were teens, but I guess it depends on each different person and how mature they are, their feelings at that age.
Wow, what a wonderful book this is. I adored it. It gave me all the feels. So much sadness and heartbreak and then just as much joy and love. It is so beautifully written. Right from the start, I was pulled into the story, and I just couldn’t stop reading. Riley and Beckett grow up together in a foster family, but Riley got adopted by his grandfather. From that moment, they lose sight of each other, whether caused by unexpected circumstances or by family interference. Then, after several years, fate steps in yet again, and the unbelievable happens, and they meet again. Each chapter starts with a flashback to their teenage years, and it works brilliantly. We are guided through their lives seamlessly, and the author paints us a vivid picture of their past and present. Filled with bittersweet and heartbreaking memories, but also with funny and joyous moments. I am not afraid to admit I constantly had tears in my eyes. Riley and Becket are amazing characters and so beautiful together. They were just meant to be. No harsh judgments, no guilt trips, but a deep love for each other that withstood the test of time and will last forever. It is Kim Breyon’s debut novel, but this author has everything to make it big. The characters, the descriptive writing, it is all amazing. This is the first book in a series, and I can’t wait to read Jake’s story.
Private investigator Beckett and artist Riley/Preston are best friends who lost touch 10 yrs ago. I liked the flashbacks, giving us an insight into their childhoods. Watching them trying to reconnect after such a long time was sweet.
Great story which flowed well, making it an easy, entertaining read. Bit of mystery. Full of emotion, family, secrets, and hope. Loved it!
It was ok but too many coincidences for my taste. I liked Beckette and Riley/Preston but nothing hooked me in. The numerous flashbacks were a little tedious.
This is a wonderful and powerful debut story by Kim. She is able to inject so much emotion into her writing and so much detail I could feel the world she’s created forming as I read. So many emotions and a such a dynamic journey to find your first love again after ten years apart!
The story follows PI Beckett as has stumbles across his childhood best friend and love of his life, artist Riley, (now going by Preston) while on a case. Each character tried to find each other and feelings never lessened over the ten years they were apart. The story is an emotional rollercoaster of betrayal, time lost, learning to love and trust again and how two people who are meant to be together they will find their way back to each other!!

I tend to rush through books and read quickly, but I couldn’t not really do that with this one. I can’t exactly pinpoint why, but it could’ve been because the book felt a deeper and emotional than I was expecting or initially in the mood for. That isn’t to be taken as a bad thing. I was drawn right into Beckett and Riley’s story, and my heart broke for them as we saw them struggle with missing the other, the pain their separation caused, and the Riley’s fear of thinking it was too good to be true. It was awesome, though, to watch the missing piece of them click back into place.
I liked the flashbacks. They didn’t pull me out of the story at all and helped give me better insight into why they felt so strongly about the other.
I hated Beckett’s sister, and my heart broke for him. At the same time, I could understand her (bad) decisions.
I am really looking forward to Jake’s story. I want to see more of Riley and Beckett.
I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC provided by LesCourt Author Services
The angst is high as is the concerning codependency issues both in Riley and Beckett's past as well as their present. As they figure things out together, this very slow-burn romance gives them a lot of room to be open, honest, and happy, but that's not always how life works. So many things unsaid between them about their past and present that it makes the story seem much longer than it really is. Despite taking a long time to get to the point of everything, this was a good story that I felt invested in most of the way through. I truly wanted to see them make it through to the other side.
Alternating POV's as well as including numerous flashbacks gives us a very complete story that felt appropriate. Sometimes having a ton of flashbacks detracts from the story and what's going on with what we feel are the relevant moments of the timeline, but these are well done. There's so much in their past that if we started there this would have had to be split into multiple books. Or it was left out only to be brought up in small explanations or brief mentions and remembrances we'd be completely lost as to why they stayed apart, what they needed to grieve, and how they became who they were now. I appreciated how the back-story was written.
But the codependency bothered me. They even acknowledge it later in the story and while I agree that the choice for their future shouldn't have been taken out of their hands, it was only through the passing of time and growing up that they were in a better place to have the relationship we hoped they would. Both Beckett and Riley have a lot of inner turmoil that should have been addressed separately. Being one another's catalyst for that change would have been apropos and I didn't think there was enough of that. Instead we see them fall apart and hold back and tiptoe around big issues.
This honestly wasn't the healthiest of relationships. At times their interactions felt like high schoolers and not grown men. Then when you added all the extra drama from family, jealousy, unclear relationship expectations, and unsatisfactory trauma coping, it becomes incredibly heavy. There's honestly just too much near the end. And I'll also mention that virtually no child talks the way Beckett's niece does. Way too enlightened and her interpretation of complex concepts was too advanced for her age.
As we finally get to the end of the story I was pretty disappointed in the conclusion of the family heirloom case. Connecting it to Beckett's affection for pirates felt forced. Getting him to Reedsport I can understand, but dragging it out to pop up for a moment or two to remove him from Reedsport a time or few and then concluding the case with cheesiness just wasn't the way to go.
The setting was quaint and felt like home. This was probably the best part of the story, creating a haven for them and a community where they both fit as the individuals they became as well as as a couple. Even though the road to their happy ending was long and fraught with all kinds of drama and trauma, they did get there and I was glad they made it.
As tropes go, second chances are not my thing. Typically, I will pass them by simply because I believe in always moving forward. Something told me to read this one, and I am so very glad I did.
THIS was one of the most heartwarming love stories I have read this year. I loved the dual POV along with the step back in time at the beginning of each chapter.
Along with that, "Back to You," called to me because one of the MCs was an artist and Goddess knows I am a sucker for artists in love. Their passion is on such a cellular level it is felt throughout the universe. So, when this ARC passed my way it DEFINITELY was a no brainer for me.
Because of the dual POV and the going back to adolescent memories of Riley and Beckett at the beginning of each chapter, I want to be careful about not giving anything away, that I shouldn't. I loved that the story was written this way. It was quite enchanting really to glimpse the boys that Riley and Beckett were and then to see how time, and their time together as children had made them into the men they were today.
Life had not been easy for either of the two, as children and because of situations beyond their control both ended in the foster care system. Luckily for them however, they both ended in a good home.
Riley disappeared from Beckett's life after years of being his dearest friend and Beckett has never stopped thinking about Riley and wondering what happened to him. Even years later, Beckett still searches for Riley and it is simply by happenstance or perhaps fate, that Beckett may have finally found him.💕
"Secrets, and lies may sink when first flung in the ocean of deceit, but they will always rise with the tide," is something my granny used to say and it is so true. I only hate that it took so long for everything to come to light and for these two souls to get their HEA. But, as many can attest, everything happens for a reason. 💋
This isn't too angsty, so don't think that, but it is emotional at times, deals with depression, and "possible" suicide attempt (of secondary character). It IS also heartwarming and endearing.
Truly love Riley & Beck! 💜🌈💚 5 falling-back-to-you-stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I received a free copy of this book via LesCourt and am voluntarily leaving a review. 💋
This is a very sweet romance between two men whose feelings developed when they were teenagers. It has a lot of flashbacks, but I can deal with those due to the fact that they give us some much needed backstory to the current events. The characters are well developed and the writing style is smooth.
There is a lot of angst in this story. Due to the circumstances of their youth, Beckett and Riley are separated before they have a chance to explore their new feelings, let alone share them with each other. They each are heartbroken when Riley is taken from the home he has known for years.
Beckett has lived his life in a cloud of misery and loneliness. Without the support of those who should have his best interests at heart, he is left with his niece who he adores, an old army buddy who has become a friend, and his job; but he has never given up hope.
Riley, or Preston, as he is now known, has a good life. While he struggled for years, events lead him to believe that he needed to finally put the past behind him and live his life. That is not to say he has in any way forgotten about Beckett, he just has to move on.
When a job comes Beckett's way, the stars begin to align. An innocent purchase leads to the discovery Beckett has been waiting ten years to find. The two are reunited, and feelings are reignited. However, due to some deception on the part of a trusted family member, neither man is sure how the other actually feels.
As the romance unfolds, the pressure of distance remains, and lack of communication leads to unnecessary fear and anxiety. When the deception is revealed from the past, it is Beckett who needs Riley to come to his rescue this time.
Overall, this is a very sweet second chance romance with a couple of very sensual times. There is a bit of drama, but it is more about reconnecting and learning about each other than anything else.
Happy reading!
* I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest review. *
This is a new author to me and I am always hesitant when trying out new authors. Admittedly, I can be quite picky when it comes to what books I like reading.
I will say this is started off a little slow to me but not in an annoying way, just in a way that made me appreciate the writing a little bit more. The flow of the words stood out to me and made me pay attention to the shifts in tone.
I love second chance and best friends to lovers tropes and this one perfectly combined the two. Riley (Preston) and Beckett were desperately missing each other from their lives, they may not have known how much love they have for one another, but the chemistry was pretty easy to tell from a reader's perspective. My heart broke for both men, especially for the little boys they used to be. They had found family in one another only for outside forces to strip that away from them. Yet, fate led them back to each other and the fact that neither of them could forget the other, spoke volumes.
I will say that I was at first not comfortable with Jake because of his past intimate relationship with Beckett. I mean, it had to awkward for Riley (Preston), but I think I will learn more about Jake in the next book. I am curious to see who he ends up with. Also, last but not least, I hate Beckett's sister Tosh. I will not say why because spoilers .
"We were torn apart by circumstance. Horrible, selfish circumstance."
Back to You is the first book in Kim Breyon's Against All Odds series. It was sweet and emotion filled second chance MM romance.
The two main characters, Riley and Beckett, carried this story for me. I cared for each of them and wanted them to finally get their happiness. Beckett had a strong, protective and caring personality. Riley was an artistic soul who was much more insecure and shy than Beckett. Both characters loved and cared deeply, be prepared for the water works because these men aren't afraid to cry.
"Longing. Desire. Admiration. Hope. Fear. Heartache. There was a hurricane in his gray depths I never knew existed...all for me"
My favorite part of Made for You was the flashback memories of Riley and Beckett as children that are woven into the story. They were an adorable pair of boys with a friendship to rival ALL friendships. Whether comforting each other when afraid, skin doodling, or munching on Twizzlers, I looked forward to each memory. All in all it was a well written story, yet I felt it lacked something and drama / conflict wise it was a bit underwhelming.
"Making love to Beckett was going to shatter me in a way I wouldn't come back from and I just knew he was going to leave, taking most of the pieces with him."
Back to You by Kim Breyon is an emotion packed story filled with friendship, heartache, joy and love. I look forward to reading more books in the Against All Odds series.
This is the debut book by this author. It packs a bit of an emotional whoop with plenty of tears. It is a book about two young boys in foster care, with a family that supports and loves their charges (which is nice to see) who develop a bond of best friendship, when circumstances beyond their control force them apart. Ten years later, a hunt for a box brings them into each other’s lives once again.
The flashbacks at the beginning of each chapter showed different times in the boys lives, It was a little annoying as they jumped all over the timeline but did show the strength of the bond between them. I also found that although the characters were well written they didn’t communicate there was lots of internal dialogue but no real conversation between the pair. Most of the secondary characters were likeable but I would’ve liked certain plot lines to have had a bit more explanation rather than almost glossed over - Amelia’s non-suicide attempt, was Beckett self harming or not? and what was going on with his sister, I didn’t like her much but why did she do what she did, it was never really explained and she was forgiven a little too easily for my liking.
But overall a likeable start to what could become a good series, I look forward to Jake’s story
This is an amazing story that I absolutely loved and I could not put it down. It is beautifully written, emotional, sweet, intense, heartbreakingly sad, full of hope, has an intriguing storyline, the setting is lovely, the characters are incredible and the author did an excellent job showing the history between the two MC's. Riley and Beck are perfect for each other and even though they were separated for ten years they never forgot the strong bond they had formed as kids. The intensity of their feelings for each other is amazing and I love how they are together. I also like how they take the time to get to know each other again and Beck's unwavering determination to stay in Riley's life now that he has found him again. I really dislike Beck's sister Tosh and the role she played in their past but her husband and daughter are very sweet. The other secondary characters are great and I can't wait to read Jake's story in the next book in this fabulous new series.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I didn't want it to end. The emotional journey of Becket and Riley was beautiful. The growth of their friendship during their childhood upheaval, their intrinsic understanding of each other's emotions, the devastating loss of that friendship through choices made for them by others, to the serendipity of finding one another again. All of these chapters in their relationship were so well written. As they moved forward in renewing their relationship, the flashbacks of their childhood were shown in years descending in their ages. An unusual choice for flashbacks but one that added immeasurably to the emotional closeness of these characters. This story flowed beautifully, and was so well written, I didn't want it to end. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series and hope there is more, much more, about Becket and Riley's lives. They fought hard for one another and found their forever happiness.
Back To You is book number one in the Against All Odds series by Kim Breyon. This is Beckett Sanders and Riley Tanager’s story.
Beckett and Riley met as kids when they ended up in the same foster home. These two developed a special friendship but circumstances forced them to lose contact with each other. It’s been ten years and Beckett still cannot forget his best friend Riley and he hasn’t given up looking for him.
This is a slow burn romance where the characters has endured so much. I loved Beckett and Riley’s characters and that I could feel their emotions. There were times that my heart just hurt for them. This was a friend’s to lovers romance that was emotional and heartwarming with intense chemistry.
I look forward to the next book in this series which focuses on Jake and we still get more of Beckett and Riley.
FYI, contains mature content. This is a M/M gay romance. Kindle Unlimited subscriber
This is the first book in The Against All Odds Series. A mesmerizing book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters likeable. The characters were developed and thought out. Riley and Beckett are the MC’s of this book. I enjoyed this book, but I think that it needed more. There were flashbacks at the start of each chapter and although I liked that they were in the book. I found it distracting that they were partial memories and so frequent without present events triggering them. I think that the way they were done broke the flow of the story. Again, I think they added to the characters, but they just needed to be organized differently. I also think that there were a few events that could’ve been filled out more that would have developed the story more. I can however recommend this book worth a read. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
I loved this book. I loved it hard. I started it Easter Morning and didn’t want to go anywhere to have to put the book down. The following morning I was up at 3a reading because I fell that hard in love
Beckett and Riley met in foster care and became the very best friends a kid could have. Their foster family loved them as their own until they were separated.
Flash forward many years where both men are not whole the way they are living. Until fate brings them back together
This was an emotional read flashing back to when they were kids to see how they met and their relationship developed. I loved relationships the guys built with their now close friends and Beckett with his so cute niece
Now don’t get me started on Beckett’s sister because she I wanted to throttle.
I definitely recommend reading this book and really can’t wait for the next book. I can’t wait to catch up with the guys in book two because they really dug themselves into my heart.
I loved the premise of this book and looked forward to reading it. It's a sweet second chance story, childhood sweethearts, torn apart and reunited. And that's it really.
It kind of meandered along. I liked both MCs, especially Beckett, but felt that Riley/Preston lacked substance. I also felt that the story as a whole was too long and could have been tightened up.
The lack of communication between the two drove me up the wall! There was a lot of, 'Are we in a relationship? Or Are we just hooking up?' Just talk to one another, for god's sake!!!
Now saying this, l did actually kind of enjoy it. There was some incongruous goings on, which puzzled me a little, but I just skipped over those and kept on with the main story.
There is a second book following on, about Beckett's best friend. If it's on KU, I will definitely read it. So mixed feelings about this one, but felt that it showed promise.
This was a terrific story of reconnecting and finding love with a best friend. Beckett and Riley met in foster care, where a strong and loving bond developed between them. When they were separated, each began a grieving process that never really ended. This grief affected the other relationships in their lives and kept them in a holding pattern that only changed once they found their way back to each other. I loved these men, and I enjoyed seeing both their childhood bond and the way their feelings evolved as adults. I hope that a future book might have them searching for the foster mother who made them feel loved in the midst of a hard situation. I liked Beckett's friend Jake, who stuck around even when Beckett didn't always treat him well, and I'm excited about reading his story. This was my first book by this author, but I really enjoyed the characters and the way the story flowed. I look forward to more from her, starting with book two of this series.
This book was such a good comfort read, like coming home to a hot cup of tea on a cold day.
The main characters were sweet and it was so easy to fall in love with them and most of the supporting cast were endearing as well! I remember thinking ‘wow, I really hope we get more of Jake after this’, so I was excited to see that the follow up book will focus on him,
Each chapter began with a childhood flashback scene, which is something I often find disorientating and unnecessary, but here I found that each scene from the past was relevant and helped to provide an insight into the characters motivations. There was a lot of angst and drama but I am a total sucker for it!
If you are looking for a book that is well written, super sweet and has just the right amount of tragedy then you need to read this book!
This book was so beautiful! It's both a best friends to lovers and a second chance. Riley and Beckett become best friends as kids when they spend 5 years with the same foster family. Just when they both start realizing that their feelings for each other run deeper than friiendship, they're separated by external circumstances and cannot find each other for the next ten years, though they both look for the other and cannot get over the loss. The chance reunion gives them both hope to restore their lost friendship and more, though Riley is wary of putting his heart on the libe, at least in the beginning. I loved how every chapter started with a glimpse in the lives of Ry and Beck as kids, in no particular order, and then went on to tell their current story. I can't wait to read more from this author!
