I’m Everly, and I see dead people.

The dead are supposed to be silent. Supposed to be resting in peace. But they aren’t. They’re vicious and loud. They aren’t resting. I know because I hear them. They steal my peace from me. The constant chatter drives me crazy. They’re the stuff nightmares are made of. I’m living a walking horror movie. They’ve haunted me since I was a little girl. Every attempt at finding peace and quiet is thwarted. They want something from me.

Then there’s Shadow. He’s been with me for as long as I can remember. A formidable, powerful being that incites fear all on his own. But he’s my protector, slaying the demons that get too close and saving me from whatever seeks to harm me, even myself. He wants something from me too.

Those in the know say I’m special, a Special to be more exact. All I want is to be a normal girl, concerned with boys and clothes and having fun. Why can’t the dead be silent for a change?

My fear and destiny collide to bring me to the doorstep of the last place I expected. I won’t be alone. He’ll be there. Shadow. And so will the dead.

Because I’m never alone. . .

The Everlasting Chronicles is an exciting brand-new serial that will follow Everly as she learns more about who she is and what her role is. Dead Silence is the first book in the serial.

*Trigger warning--Dead Silence contains dark subject matter that some may find unsettling. Reader discretion is advised.

Stars: 2 out of 5.

This was decidedly meh for me. Also, I hadn't realized this was a young adult book, and the older I get, the less tolerance I have for typical YA books. The protagonist was very YA indeed, with young adult problems that seem less and less important the older I get. I honestly couldn't care less about her interactions with her best friend or her problem with her maybe ex boyfriend.

Seriously though, that is a perfect example of a toxic relationship, and the author is trying to portray it as something worth fighting for? Dude literally killed her by pushing her in front of a car! So what if she didn't die? That was solely due to supernatural intervention. On all accounts, her boyfriend committed involuntary manslaughter. Oh, and he didn't even get a slap on the wrist for that. And she doesn't want to press charges? No, thanks. I'm already over this story.

The other issue I have with this book is that the story takes a long time taking off the ground. In fact, you could argue that the whole book is just setup. The real story only begins in the last 10% of the book when we are introduced to the special academy Everly has to attend in order to control her gift. Other than that, all the events in this book could have been compressed in 1-2 opening chapters. The rest is just filler that got more and more boring as the story progressed, and I realized that it was going nowhere.

In order to find out what the heck is wrong with the dead and why they are so aggressive towards Every, I would have to pick up the next book in the series. Unfortunately, I have no desire to do that. This is definitely not for me, but at least I crossed another title off my TBR list, I guess...

1 sitting. 3 hours.

That's what it took for me to finish this absolutely wow book. It was interesting right from the start, and through to the end. Never a dull moment.

There were parts that scared the shit out of me too, and gave me the creeps. At a point, I even freaked out at a moving reflection (of my own hand, no less) I saw from my periphery and almost screamed out loud. It was that engaging.

I lost track of time as I read this book. I'd been planning on reading just a few chapters, but my plans always fail! Dead Silence was too good to put down after just a few chapters.

I loved the characters, I loved the suspense, and I am so looking forward to reading Broken Shadow!

This is my second book by this author and it certainly lived up to expectations. It's creepy and made my heart race the whole way through. I found it original, exciting and scary in equal measures. Some questions were answered but there are many more asked and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

If you like supernatural reads with a dark twist you will love This!

What a great start to what seems like an incredible series. This is a fantasy novel, with some spooky, and possibly a romance in the future (I definitely hope so at least). The main character was really interesting and likable. Really good read. I'll be looking out for book 2 like a crazy person. I want to know what happens next so bad!

I found the cover to be so interesting. It's what first drew me in to the book and made me pick it up without even bothering to read the blurb.
In the end, the story turned out to be rather unnerving, but I loved it. The majority of the time I did not understand what was happening, and I still don't really understand the root of the problem, so to speak, but it all sound damn intriguing.
I loved all the mysteries and trying to piece bits of the information together in hopes of it making sense. And the writing was rather good, so there's also that.

As far as spontaneous reads go, this was a great one.

In a word, confused. There were many intriguing ideas in Dead Silence, but no real answers. Maybe that was the author's intent--to be in the place of the character as she experienced this confusing event in her life--I didn't care for all the loose ends and unexplained occurrences. This reads like a prequel to me, the ending being a great set up for the next book, but it wasn't for me. I've read other stuff by this writer and loved it, so it's this particular storyline rather than the writing, which I liked.

Unexpected and mind-blowing is what comes to mind after having read Dead Silence by K.G. Reuss.
A complete 180 and not straight forward like I had expected and anticipated. But that’s what made the story even better.

Everly “Ever” Torres seems like your normal typically 17 year old high school student, but she is far from it. After an incident occurs, she starts to lose herself never knowing if something is reality or something that’s just in her head. Leading her not to know who or what to trust, because of it all.

At every turn I was constantly asking questions, my main being who is Shadow and where can I find my own? Lol just kidding on the second one. But it still had me continuing in anticipation of when and if I would get my answers. For some of it I did, however for some I didn’t. But this is only just the beginning for Ever, so I know there is more yet to come. Which means even more questions and hopefully answers too!

K.G. Reuss had me hooked from the very beginning to the very end. And I can’t wait to see how Ever’s story continues, especially when it comes to Shadow.

If you enjoyed K.G. other books, but haven’t read Dead Silence then what are you waiting for? Check it out. And if you’re in supernatural thrillers, then definitely check it out.
IT’S A MUST READ!!!

Seventeen-year-old Everly (Ever to her friends) has had a very rough childhood with her alcoholic abusive father and the voices in the dark. The scary creatures of the night and the Shadow first arrived when she was a child and now they seem to be coming around more since her near-death experience and they are definitely not friendly.

This book is absolutely intense in a very good way. There are elements of horror and suspense with a mix of dark fantasy and supernatural. This is the first book in what appears to be a series so it ends in a cliffhanger, but that is okay because I know I want to read the second book to see what happens next.

A brand new series by K.G.Reuss, and she doesn't disappoint!
It's well written, leaving the reader with questions and mysterious answers. It kept me at the edge of my seat, wanting to get the whole picture right away. Can't wait for the next book!!

Everly, a seventeen year old girl, has had a difficult childhood with an alcoholic father and... creatures in the dark.

"The situation was sort of a which is better: the Devil I knew or the Devil I didn’t know. Did I want to see it coming or would I prefer to hide beneath my blanket in the dark hoping that it didn’t show itself? Or worse. Touch me."

Dead Silence is all about Ever thinking she is going more crazier by the day. Seeing things and hearing things no others seem to see or hear..

"-...Isn’t that what insanity is? Doing the same thing over and over yet expecting different results?”"

If you're like me, that you can't sleep with a hand or a foot outside of the bed at night...then you better lift up your feet from the floor when reading..and turn up the light! Just saying...!

A new series by K.G. Reuss and she already is becoming an author with can't miss works of literature for me. Her books draw me in that very few can.

In this story, it is dark with some major twists and turns as Ever finds herself. Reuss leaves enough crumbs to guess some portions while still shocking the reader in other areas. I can't wait for the next installment of the series so I can see how Ever progresses with new found powers she is understanding now.

The place between our own protective walls and truth. Strange how there are so many versions of shifted or parallel world's. As if there really are so many alternative options it is infinite. So who does touch them? Who sees them? Who just imagines them? Why limit one's self?

Dead Silence is a truly dark YA coming of age novel. This is a story about a teenager named Everly, Ever to her friends. Everly hasn’t had an easy childhood. She and her mother went through hell because of her dad, and finally, he was arrested and made to leave. But Everly will never forget what he did…when he took her and shoved her into a closet screaming that they could have her. That she was a curse to be gotten rid of. She hasn’t seen the Shadow with the burning red eyes for a few years now, but something is coming…and he’s back. Everly’s life begins to spiral out of control. She’s seeing and hearing the dead. They won’t let her be. They scream whisper and harass her. There is no peace for Everly. One night, while at a party Everly is taking her ex-boyfriend home, but things devolve quickly and Everly is hurt badly in an accident. At that moment, after the accident, that’s when everything changes for Everly, and the dead refuse to be ignored. Everly is seeing the dead. They are demanding that she pay attention to them, help them…let them in. They whisper about things that she doesn’t understand. Nobody can see or hear them but her, and so it makes her look crazy. Shadow is there, the dead whisper of him, but what they say doesn’t make sense.
Dead Silence is NOT for those who are sensitive to certain subjects. Everly starts off as a normal teenage girl. She’s unhappy about catching her boyfriend cheating on her. She’s done with him, but he wants her back. She’s hurt behind the break-up, but she’s determined to move forward. Too bad Dylan, her ex, isn’t. He says he’s sorry, but boy is he quick to jump to the next chick and of course several are more than eager to throw themselves at him. I like how the author captures the teenage/high school element without going overboard. Typically with most authors, they throw in lots of snarky attitude, bad behavior and really take it over the top. I appreciate how the author has more of a balance with this book. Normally, when there are underage drinking and inappropriate behavior I am disgusted and disappointed, but I managed to handle it better with this book. Weird, I know, but true. I think it is the tasteful way that the author handles it all. Everly attempts to be just a normal teen, but with the way that things are devolving she’s losing that battle.
I will say that there are a couple editorial errors in this book, but nothing so major that it will detract from the overall story. I couldn’t believe how engaged in the story I became. I had nothing but empathy for Everly. She was battling things that nobody else could see or hear. The dead were twisting things so that she looked unstable.
As this is the first book in the series, this story really sets the groundwork. I think this is what appealed to me the most. We see the hell that Everly goes through as she struggles with this…”gift” though it’s more of a curse. You will get to see her be broken down to the very brink and topple over the edge. This book is not one that I would recommend to those who walk that edge. It is truly dark, but thanks to Shadow, Everly is given another chance.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. It is dark, has quite a bit of creep factor and is thoroughly engaging. I loved it. I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you have an issue with underage drinking, dark elements, and other similar themes, I suggest you pass on this book. But if you can handle it, and are one who embraces the darker side with just the right balance, then this is a book to check out. I am eagerly looking forward to the next book in this series. Also, this book is based on a true story…excited yet? Come on in.

Everly, or Ever for short, has always been able to see ghosts and other horrible creatures that want to harm her. The only person who saved her numerous times is a black shadow with red eyes. Ever's father was an alcoholic and he abused her and her mother. After her mother found the strength to leave her father Ever's sightings settled down a bit, but now the voices have become more urgent again and are trying to force Ever to listen to them. They're not above using violence and Ever fears that this time they won't go away so easily. Can Ever find a way to deal with them before she gets hurt?

Ever broke up with her boyfriend after she found him cheating on her. He keeps apologizing and wants to win Ever back, but she isn't willing to give him a second chance. When Ever and her best friend Nina go to a party, her ex-boyfriend is very drunk. Ever decides to give him a ride home. They get into a heated argument and when Ever gets out of the car she's hit by an SUV. Ever is badly hurt and will not survive the crash. This is, until Shadow gives her a choice. Will Ever choose life even though it will never be the same again?

Ever had to deal with so much when her father was still around. She and her mother came out on top, but the scars remain. Ever and her mom are incredibly close and I always love to read stories with strong family bonds. The things that Ever is hearing and seeing are beyond frightening and will bring any person to their knees. I admired her for her strength and courage to deal with what's happening instead of running away. The people around her think she's losing her mind and Ever gets to the point that she stops caring. My heart went out to her and was hoping that she would get the help she needs to survive.

Dead Silence is a chilling story about terrifying encounters with the afterlife. K.G. Reuss has a vivid imagination and I was intrigued by the dark and dangerous creatures she writes about. Dead Silence is the first book I've read by K.G. Reuss and she got me hooked on her addictive way of telling a story. I can't wait to read the next book in The Everlasting Chronicles, Shadow Song. Dead Silence kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I really loved this blood-curdlingly scary story, it made my heart skip a beat.

Beguiling and Emotional

I’m a sucker for a story that has depth, and this delivers. Ready for some creepy honesty? I was drawn to reading this story because I’ve seen creepy shadows lurking about, myself. So, I was naturally curious to see how a story played out using this device I just happen to be acquainted with.

Unlike Ever, I don’t hear voices, or see the dead, or think I’m crazy. But I totally get where she’s coming from! And her struggle is so real, and visceral.

From having an alcoholic/abusive parent, to having a guy in her life who only wants ONE thing (if you catch my drift), to exploring the dangers of hard liquor, and finally, trying desperately to kill herself... this story is painfully relatable.

As such, beware of triggers, and also note that the author in no way glorifies or encourages suicide, even including a note about it at the end of the book.

I am for sure hooked on this. It has a slightly horror...( okay maybe more than slightly), slightly psychological thriller vibe, that seems to be heading toward some kind of academy thing for the part of the series. And like Everly, we’re left with a whole mess of questions that need answering, and this series holds all the promise of being fast paced and captivating to the very end.

So, I do recommend, but with some reservation as this book deals with a whole mess of sensitive topics that could be very triggering to some. Basically, know yourself and what you can handle. It’s a great book!

First of all: a content warning for attempted suicide and for attempted rape (attempting sex with someone who is seriously drunk). The beginning of the book feels like a horror novel. The creatures coming after Ever are scary and they seem to want her to join them. She’s pursued at home and in school, even though no one else can see or hear what she’s dealing with. Unfortunately, this excellent vibe is smacked down when the story turns into an urban fantasy with labeled supernaturals (Specials) and an academy they go to. It takes the delightful horror of the beginning and turns it mundane. Hopefully the horror vibe turns back up in later books, because that was the best part of this volume.

The characters are good and have depth. Ever is a bit of a bitter, sarcastic person; it’s understandable given her background. She deals with almost-death and seeing dead things very badly. There are definitely some uneasy scenes with her schoolmates that are difficult to read, in which she’s heavily embarrassed by what’s going on and how others are reacting to her. This material is written very well, and makes it easy to empathize with both Ever and her friends.

I’m not sure whether I want to read the next volume. I’m not really psyched about the idea of another magical academy book. If you are, and you also enjoy some horror, then this is probably the series for you.

My name is Everly, and I'm haunted by the dead.
Or maybe hunted is a better word since it seems the dead want to make me one of them. Luckily, I have Shadow on my side, the formidable, powerful being who's been with me since the start of all the madness. He never speaks. But I know he's my protector, slaying the demons that get too close and saving me from whatever seeks to harm me, even myself. I just want a normal life. But I'm not normal. And nothing is as it seems. Not even Shadow. He's so much more than I imagined.
My fear and destiny collide to bring me to the doorstep of a place I never dreamed possible. I won't be alone. Shadow will be there. And so will they. The dead. Because I'm never alone.

In summary, reading the first 3 books made me feel like I was running on a treadmill. Stuck in one place but requiring an increasing amount of effort to stay on. The story chokes on the endless lies that are meant to conjure up new ways to keep the lovers apart. (And perhaps push this into an RH?) The lying and inability to give a straight answer to questions damaged my ability to like (and cheer for) Rainer or Ever.

I just wished the author would ease up the choke hold and let them grow. And stop letting them make useless empty promises... it’s off putting.

There are a few typos and continuity errors, but I could overlook this.

The review of books 1-3 have been combined and are the same. Why? I see books 1 and 2 as prologues. Book 1 (Dead Silence) is the prologue from Ever’s point of view. Book 2 (Shadow Song) is the prologue from Shadow’s point of view. I think it best to read both 1 and 2 to understand the perspectives and circumstances that will lead to book 3 (Grave Secret). However, it was long winded to have to read the same story twice, essentially. My growing annoyance with book 3 also made me question whether reading any of it was a good use of my time.

📖 My Thoughts

I absolutely loved this book. I thought going into this story that it would be a typical paranormal story with moderate stakes that just goes through the motions. I am very happy that i was completely wrong. We start off strong and we are immediately thrust into Ever's world where we get a quick glimpse of who she is and how life is for her. I honestly think this was a great first book. enough happened to capture the interest of readers and left the door open for those curious enough to go to the next book.

suicide, death, car accident, near-death experiences.

there are more so please check the author's website linked below for more information.

It took me awhile to read this book after I requested an advanced copy but once I did, I must admit I was blown away by it. The characters are mesmerizing. The plotline is exceptional. The story flew by once I started the book and I found I couldn't put it down.

I wasn't sure where this story was headed. I thought it was going to be the typical high school drama of betrayal and teenage angst. Okay. There is that but there is so much more. The story delves into the human psyche. The author took a troubled childhood with an abusive parent and turned it on it's head. The phrase 'I see dead people' is just the start. There's intrigue, drama, horror, mysterious beings, strange doctors (I don't trust him), caring friend and mother and then there's Shadow. Dementon (dare I say dementors might be coming) is some place that sounds very scary and her escorts are just a tip of the ice berg. I can't wait for the next book. Why did I wait so long to read this?? Why?? Such a great book. Pick it up and read it, you won't regret it.

Self destruction, suicidal, and aggravating heroine

Where do I even begin, I loved this book, loved the idea and storyline of this book, and even the glimpse of shadow at the end, but what I couldn't deal with was ever. I hated how weak she was, there was a lot going on, and I excepted her to try, she knew her life was about to change, excepted then, but kept running, crying, self sabotaging herself, the way she acted was hard for me to want to finish. She didn't try once to come out on top, talk to the dead, or find real answers. She went straight for self destruction and suicide. She was a hot mess where I just wanted another heroine all together. I loathe characters like her, no strength, no fight, just plain pitiful. I will try reading the next book in this new series, but if this chick doesn't find some spine or get over herself I will just chuck it and wash my hands

This book ended up surprising me. The first 20% was uneven, perhaps the author finding their way around the story. There was some inconsistency and repetative language that bugged me and I thought about giving up.

But I'm glad I didn't

The story is interesting, a little of the girl is special, has a secret guardian, supernatural world and all. But where it distances itself were the character growth/reactions and how you follow Ever into her devolving mental state and learn more about her past, in a new perspective, as we go. By the time we got to that, I was hooked and a half, following along to see how things turn out. Especially since by the end, we spent about 60-70% of the book following her down the rabbit hole.

Bonus points for POC MC, realistic high school portrayal (well, mostly), and supportive, loving mother.

Everly is a typical seventeen-year old whose life centers on clothes and boys. But she’s also atypical in that she can see and hear the dead and other monstrous creatures that harbour evil intentions. She’s been tormented by them since early childhood, believing them to be a figment of her youthful imagination after the voices and sightings eventually stopped. Unfortunately they’re now back and haunting her to the point that she believes she’s gone mad. Has she truly gone insane and living in a make-believe world? Or is there something darker at play here - something otherworldly? This story is well written with compelling characters. There's a lot of teenage angst, and plenty of mystery as the story unfolds along with some confusion (intentional or not?) over what is really happening.

In the last few years I read very few books that can be considered YA, basically nothing where the characters are still in their teens, but the blurb of this book drew me to Ever's story. This is not for the faint of heart, and people should beware of trigger warnings. That said, I devoured it once I started reading. Ever is a well developed complicated character with wounds that run deep even in her short life. Confused about changes and her unexplainable childhood with an abusing father and creatures she thought were only her overactive imagination. She's sassy, snarky, and independent. It pained me to see her reach her breaking point before finding out about who exactly she is, and even that brought more questions than answers. A great first book to set up a series.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This story is about a girl who can't tell the difference between reality or what's in her mind. A supernatural/psychological thriller. She's losing it, and she's not sure she can trust the world around her. There are things in the shadows trying to get her, voices in her head. She hears them, she sees them, she can't sleep. Is death preferable? Can anyone save her? What about the Shadow man? Does he want to help her? I went into this book not really sure what to expect. From the cover, you can kind of tell it was gonna be somewhat of a suspense/thriller. But I definitely didn't expect what jumped off the pages. It's an edge-of-the-seat, nail-biting, gripping, thrilling, blood chilling story that keeps you guessing. You're gonna love it. I did.
