Lightning Seeker

Rate this book
Another god in the mix, another Fallen One to kill.

Cults, Witches and Dark Creatures, all out to get me. However, something is different now. Some of the powerful leaders of the underworld are going missing, which brings my attention to the Hagalaz Cult. I'm investigating their claim that they're descendants of the most powerful Norse god of all time. Are they the ones rotting the underworld from the inside out?

Terrible writing decent plot idea.

Terrible writing. Empathy is not an emotion. The dog is my favorite. Good idea for a plot, but the reader is smacked over the head with bad guys are bad, the hero is emotionally shut off and women are good for sex. And yet, imma skim the last o e to sew what happens.

Not as good as the first and not as great as the third in the series, but still enjoyable.

I'm getting a bit tired of the sex and the attitude. Never thought I'd actually think that, but there it is. Aside from that, Trygger is seeming to become less of an awesome dark hero and more of a troubled prick with good moments. I do like learning more of his past, though, because I'm starting to get him a bit more. By the end of this book I was back to liking him again, but that doesn't mean his little head isn't doing lots more thinking than the big head and is winning me over, because it's not.

I'm glad for Chloe, though. She's growing and progressing and becoming much more of the woman I want to see her become. She's blossoming and I like her. Her proximity to Trygger and Jack is affecting them, thank goodness, so she's really becoming part of the cast and not just a hanger-on that whines and stomps her feet.

This book was much more dramatic and the plot keeps thickening. We learn to doubt our belief in some and trust more in others and it's keeping me on my toes. There are also new characters that hint toward big things to come. There's more mythology here too, but I thought there'd be a bit more explanation by now of all the levels and creatures and types and...well, just all the stuff that goes into this whole world. I didn't get a ton in the first book and I thought it was because everything was so new, it was going to be explained a bit more in the second book. Well, not so, my friend, not so. That's a bit disappointing, but not enough to turn me off of the series yet.

Excited for more! I got this book free from the author and very willingly reviewed it.

Trygger is back, this time with trouble on his back from the Hagalaz Cult and some of the underground supernaturals. Chloe, Trygger's apprentice is starting to grow on Trygger, almost giving him some of his humanity back that he had lost throughout the 1000 years he has been chasing after the Fallen One's and sending them back to Freya, who is starting to appear that she has ulterior motives than what Trygger has been living for.
Chloe and Trygger are starting to get more involved, and I am personal rooting for them to get together. Jack is brought back into this book, and he too seems to have an eye for Chloe. Jack also is holding a lot of secrets that are putting Trygger in danger, including Trygger getting kidnapped. Medhurst has stayed true to Norse Mythology and continued to expand on really well developed characters, including Chloe's dog Rusty, which makes for a nice addition considering Rusty is infused with magic. A wonderful follow up to Thunder Hunter, leaving us desperate for the next book in hopes to see more of a transformation in Trygger, his emotions and ultimately his task to return Thor's thunder.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this advance reader copy and was not compensated in any way.

Lightning Seeker is Book 2 in the Viking Soul series. I am reading them slightly out of order so my reviews are out of order as well. This was a well written continuation of the series - as the author is British and the book takes place in London you will find a lot of British terminology and spelling (which as a Canadian makes no difference to what I am used to). I found the the book to be entertaining and it filled in some blanks I had after reading book 3 Storm Guardian - I highly recommend reading them in order as it makes a lot more sense and is a lot easier to follow the action but definitely read them if you have an interest in Urban fiction or Mythology as this is a great take on both

Action packed second installment

The second book has lot more action and a bit more emotions involved. Trygger a.k.a thunder hunter has his hands full with the a silly but dangerous cult who wants to wipe himself and Chloe, themselves and any other with God blood in them, leaders of the underworld kidnapped and held for ransom( the ransom being himself) and the fallen one's.
The author does an amazing job of weaving mythology, a world of past and present together in this amazing fast paced urban fantasy. There are funny moments between Jack, Chloe and Trygger bantering and bickering between themselves and some emotional moments when Trygger gets to remember his past.
All in all a great , fast paced read. I am waiting for the third book to come out.

What a great follow up to the first book!! I so enjoyed how even the wanker Jack evolved from completely sleezy to an ok friend . I'm glad Freya's gal Chole has mellowed she was much more enjoyable! Norse mythology at its best the author has kept me on my toes trying to figure out just exactly what the Gods are up to! Our hero The Thunder Hunter thought his mission was pretty straight forward but new information makes him wonder if he's just a pawn and wether or not he will finally return to Thor the powers he has held safe . Full of great action even better characters as well as the everlasting fight between good and evil. If mythology is your cup of teas then this series is a pot full!!!

This is book 2 in this series. I suggest you read book 1 Thunder Hunter first.
With more action and intrigue, this picks up where we left off in Thunder Hunter. Trygger is continuing to train Chloe, and Jack is well Jack. After 1000 yrs on earth, cracks are beginning to show in Trygger, his humanity is slowly seeping through his toughened exterior. Jack is Trygger's info guy, but is he giving Trygger all the info he has collected?? And if not, why not??
Another great read with magic, deities, Norse mythology, action and a hint of sexual tension, you won't want to put this down!!

My second read from author Rachel Medhurst in the Viking Soul Series continues the well-written enjoyable romp loosely building on the Norse gods' legends set in modern times in England. The sarcasm and wry humor contribute to my enjoyment of the book.

An Action Packed Instalment Into This New Norse Urban Fantasy Series.

You can read my full review on my WordPress blog, Flora's Musings...

So, what did I like about it?
I have read a couple of books by Rachel Medhurst before; I find her writing style easy to read, her plots well paced and her tales full of action. My Kindle edition of this book has a different cover than the one shown on Goodreads – I much prefer my one actually and have used it with my blog’s review - and has 284 pages not 169 as listed on Goodreads.

This series is written in the first person, from the point of view of our hero, Trygger Odinson who is the grandson of the Norse God of Thunder, Thor and Lightning Seeker: Viking Soul Book 2 kicks off a month after book 1 - Thunder Hunter - left off.

Chloe was one of my favourite characters in the first book because I liked her humour and I could see her potential. I really liked reading that her training was still ongoing and that she was improving both in her physical fitness and her magical talents. I also liked how Trygger and Jack are both affected by Chloe's presence; we see more glimmers of humanity in both of them in this book.

The mysteries are piling up in this tale and I enjoyed flexing my Miss Marple tendencies. I liked the new reveal about how the mysterious journal got into Chloe's hands and how Trygger's mission is having a knock-on effect, expanding Rachel Medhurst’s paranormal world with new characters, potential allies, threats and agendas.

Lightning Seeker: Viking Soul Book 2 is full of surprises; I was never sure where the story would take me next. There are revelations, new threats, new enemies, new friends and new Fallen Ones to vanquish.

So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
Ok, so here’s where I have to be honest; although I did enjoy this book there are few niggles that took the shine off for me.

So the main one has carried over from the first book; I don’t really like our hero, Trygger, I don't get his "need to work off tension" among other things. During these books he hasn’t exhibited enough of the traits (actions or thoughts) that I like in my broody kickass alpha type heroes and although these books are written from his perspective (in the first person) the inner dialogue that we do get doesn’t always help me to like him better, in fact on occasion it had the opposite effect! However, I have seen glimmers of potential during this book and I am hoping that in the next instalment he will finally become my wet dream alpha hero. Lol!

Oh, and I felt that that the book ended mid-scene which I found a bit frustrating; I was left feeling oh, is that it? Although there is no life-or-death cliffhanger at the end of this book - Woohoo! You know how I hate those! – Lightning Seeker: Viking Soul Book 2 is only the second book in a new series and as such we are left with more questions unanswered and mysteries unsolved than you can shake a sword at plus there are still more Fallen Ones to be dispatched.

So, basically what I’m saying is...

I enjoyed reading this book; it's good. It's got a good mix of personalities in our main cast of characters and in the villains they fight, the plot is well paced with a good balance of mystery and action that kept me guessing. I have already bought book 3 - Storm Guardian: Viking Soul Book 3 - and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Due to the nature of some of the more violent scenes, the sexual "depravity" inferred and the language used, I'd recommend this book to adults who are not offended by content of this nature who are fans of urban fantasy, action adventures with story-lines edging towards the darker side

This episode/installment, what ever, really didn't do it for me - it was just so-so and all the characters irritated me.

Trygger - was even more of jerk this time around and I do really get that he "can't afford emotions". But it's like he has no respect for humans especially women.

Chloe - was acted like such a brat and child that I wanted to smack her.

The only thing that saved it for me was the Norse mythology that the story is based in - as always with something like that I went all "geek girl" on it.

It's a good read not as good as the first book and Trygger is getting a little whiny not as heroic as the first book. Chloe on the other hand is growing exponentially and I love seeing her coming into her own and becoming a part of the team. On to the next book, can't wait!!

Viking may have more gods than the Greeks. How in the world do they keep them straight. Really good story.
