She woke a part of me I thought long dead...

"She pretty?"
"F###, yeah."
"Single?"
"Uh-huh."
"She into you?"
"Think so."
"So, what's the problem?"
"I kissed her."

I specifically told the agency I wanted a male dog walker. She's way too leggy. That's the problem. And young. And naïve. I got no business letting her stay in my guesthouse, especially the way my blood runs south whenever she's near. In another lifetime, I might've pursued her but I suck at relationships.

Unfortunately, my dog found a clue to a murder and she's involved. If I don't protect her, who will?

Lilac
There's something about Mr. Sexy and that over-the-top kiss. I've never felt anything so consuming, so mind-blowing. Then, he apologized. Now, he's pissed. What the h3ll? How had my heart become so invested in so short a time?

Note: Steaming hot scenes, two wounded souls, and a slobbery puppy. HEA guaranteed.

Amazon Best Seller Stella Marie Alden loves Zumba, yoga, watercolor painting, and all genres of romances.

Her first book, ‘How to Train Your Knight’, won Romance Writers of America coveted Molly and Show me the Sparks Contests, and placed in four others.
Truly remarkable, considering she’s only been writing for three years.

Growing up in Vermont, she loved to make up stories. Crayons fought each other over size and placement in their cardboard box and imaginary friends crowded the house. Her brother often complained. “Tell her no one’s here, Mother.".

Her career paths have varied. She’s been a librarian, a classical clarinetist wanna-be, recording studio engineer, broadcast electronics repairman, and now she architects software programs.

She lives in Bergen County, NJ with her life-long hero and their two cats. Her two girls are grown but ever supportive. You go Mom!

Slate by Stella Marie Alden
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Humor, Mystery, Romance, Suspense
4 Solid Stars

Fast paced. Well written.

There is a Pinch of Humor and a Dash of Suspense.
A Dollop of Romance well blended with a Handful of Steamy Scenes.
In other words, A Fun read.

Some scenes were a bit jumpy.
There is definitely room for improvement.

I loved the characters and enjoyed the story enough that I will be continuing the series.
Hoping it is better or atleast just as good as this one.

My dreams have finally come true, the stars and planets have aligned, Slate has his own book. I have been hoping and praying, reading the 3 previous releases by Stella Marie Alden having Slate as a secondary character, that he would get his own book and yay he does.

Slate is the bodyguard and head security officer for Grayson Patten, wife Isabelle and daughter Skye. He has been protecting Grayson, Izzy and Skye for at least the past year while keeping Xavier Cross off their tail. He took a bullet in the last novel, The CEO’s Redemption, saving everyone from Xavier and has been ordered to recuperate. And he begrudgingly does so until a dog shows up on his doorstep. He needs to find a dog walker as he can’t do anything with his healing shoulder and in walks Lilac.

Lilac is studying to be a doctor, her family has disowned her after “the incident” and she is struggling to make it both financially and academically. She gets a call about a live in dog walker position and jumps at the chance to not have to worry about where she will sleep next for a minute. She gets situated into her temporary cottage home and is surprised when Slate not only breaks into the house but is totally nude doing so.

Slate has suffered a loss in his past that makes him leery to find love again, and he is genuinely surprised at how quickly he develops feelings for Lila with a C. She feels the same way about Slate, after “the incident”, she doesn’t think she’ll be able to be with a man let alone envision a future with one.

Throw in a murder mystery, a cute rambunctious puppy and shady police officers and you have a great novel by Stella Marie Alden. I must confess, I enjoyed Slate about 100% more than I enjoyed the CEO series (featuring Grayson Patten and Isabella Harte). I feel like this book was written by a different author as it is a total different style than I had been used to with the 3 previous CEO books. I wish all the previous books had been written in this style, the others felt rushed and jumbled at time, just all around too confusing. This novel stayed the course, while it read quickly I didn’t feel like I read quickly.

A highly enjoyable romance with suspense and twists that keep things unpredictable, I quickly came to love Lilac and Slate's story. Their beginning is definitely bumpy, but it's also funny, and I got a real kick out of Lilac's internal dialogue. A romance with heat, but also heart that makes the entire experience feel charming. It's fantastic to get to know both characters, and see how they grow. The writing is fantastic, and the characters well-crafted. I highly recommend picking up a copy as soon as possible.

Ask for a male dog walker, get a female dog walker and one that makes you feel again. Get a dog walker job, arrive and the hot owner accuses me of breaking in. Slate and Lilac now begin the process of getting over the past, figuring out who's grabbing dogs, and trying to not give into the heat between them - yea that's so not happening! What a story that has mystery, lots of heat and a couple who once they open up to the possibilities will have the HEA they both deserve. A gotta read book!!

In this story we meet Slate. He is a stern, ex-special forces, head of security for a really important person. He wants to hire a dog walker for a dog he found on his front steps. There is a mix up and instead of getting a male like he requested a young attractive female arrives unannounced setting off his alarms. This young woman is named Lilac, Lila with an a-c as she is referred to numerous times throughout. She is not looking for a man and he is not looking for a woman. That should be easy enough right? Well maybe not since there is so much chemistry between them. However, they both have large walls built up around their hearts due to part tragedy in their lives. Getting past those walls is a challenge enough let alone having a murderer coming after Lilac. We watch as the two get past their differences and work together to solve the question of “who is this person attacking”.
I really connected with both characters, but Lilac is probably my favorite. She is determined to finish school and become a doctor all on her own without the help of her family. Even though she has a job dog walking, she has agreed to living there and will not accept money from him in addition even though he is not happy all she is eating is ramen and vitamins. She has her own inner demons she is fighting and is going to group to help herself become stronger. She really is a true heroine and roll model.

Slate is recovering from a gunshot wound. He is a bodyguard and got shot saving his boss. Slate found a. Puppy that had been shot so he fixed the puppy. He needs someone to walk the dog and Lilac Starbird is sent to him to be his dog walker even though he wanted a male. Slate had something awful happen with his wife and son a few years ago, so he doesn’t want a woman around. Lilac is taking her last class then will begin her residency at a New York hospital. It has taken her awhile as she had some trauma when she was in school earlier.

This book is good. There is suspense, healing and love. I loved how Slate’s protective side came out even though he didn’t want to get involved. Lilac was a strong woman. I encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s Copy of the book.

So this had a really good storyline but it also felt like it was jumping all over the place. This was a fairly quick almost Insta love book. The suspense was appreciated but again things felt a little off. I kept getting confused on what was going on. It wasn't a bad read at all but it would of been a whole lot better if it wasn't rushed and parts were not repeated. It almost seemed like the author forgot she had already written about what was going on and then told the facts all over again. I have seen some reviews with more stars than what I'm willing to give so please don't think I'm trying to discourage anyone from reading this. Everyone thinks differently so give it a try. You might like it more than I did!

This was a great read. For one thing, there was some mystery and suspense. And of course romance. Slate is a tough guy and not a man to be trifled with. He's the perfect guy for Lilac, who has had some hard knocks in life. I enjoyed this book immensely. I voluntarily read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Fast-paced suspense, danger and romance with chemistry and heart

Slate by Stella Marie Alden, the much anticipated story of Slate (Busted Play Series). Slate has been an intriguing character and deserving of his own book to tell his story. Very private and always in control, Slate finds his world rocked off it’s axis. Enter Lilac, strong yet vulnerable, sexy and irresistible to Slate which he finds to be aggravating and Lilac is curious when Slate hasn’t pissed her off. These two are funny and challenging as they navigate their encounters that become increasingly intimate and super sexy. Chemistry is not the only thing they have in common to explore, but they also need each other to heal and deal with past hurts.
Overall, Stella Marie Alden delivers another incredible and well written book that captivates and enthralls the reader from beginning to end!

I am so happy Stella decided to write a story about Slate. This book has so much going on. Plenty of suspense and intrigue, add in a super alpha male and a heroine who is extremely strong, except she doesn't know it.
This book was hard to put down. It was great reading the instant attraction between Slate and Lilac, and then how their relationship evolved will make sure this book is definitely one I will reread.
Cannot wait to read more books from Stella in the future.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.

I really enjoyed this book. Slate meets Lilac (Lila with a c) when “she breaks into” his guest house. Dog, Lilac, and Slate open a can of worms when Dog brings a severed hand as a gift for Lilac. They don’t have to look to hard to find a murderer, he finds them. Along with the action there is a love story that starts with unpacking baggage, and learning to leave the baggage behind. Lilac is one of Mel’s girls which complicates things for Slate. What does being one of Mel’s girls mean? You will have to read the book to find out. HEA guaranteed.

Just WOW! This story about two characters that both have a lot to deal with. They are broken but are meant to heal each other. But can they act on it. An amazing mix of mystery, drama, danger, romance, steam and chemistry that is over the top. Twists that keeps you on the edge.
It is written in dual POV which gives the reader much more of the thoughts and feelings of the main characters.
Absolutely a must read.

A very entertaining read. A well written storyline that is a wonderful blend of romance, mystery and suspense. The characters are likeable and they have great chemistry. The book grabs and keeps your interest well. The storyline and characters have good emotional depth. Both these characters have a painful past that must be worked through before they can open their hearts to one another. I found Slate and Lilac's book to be a enjoyable read. This is my honest, voluntary review.

Loved hearing Slate's story. Finally we learned a little more about him. It was great to see Grayson and Isabella again in this as well. The story is well written and flow is fantastic. Slate and Lilac have amazing chemistry together. Slate is of course a moody guy but around Lilac he just opens up. Lilac is sweet and strong but is in much need of someone like Slate. This has mystery and suspense throughout the story and the ending was great. It is definitely worth reading and won’t disappoint. I voluntarily review an advanced reader copy of this book.

A good read. Characters from two previous books by Ms. Alden show up in this novel. I like this inter- connectedness between stories. This is a lovely romance between a woman who has suffered from past abuse and a disconnect from her family and the gentleman, who as well has suffered past trauma. They manage to work their way past these issues and pursue a hit and heavy (steamy) romance. Along with the romance there is also a mystery, maybe a murder, drama that all ends up into a happy ever after. Good stuff!

I received an advance review copy of this novel and I am leaving an honest review.

Overall I enjoyed the book. Some parts, like the 'mystery' and Lilac's relationship with her family, seemed underdeveloped, almost as if the book was trying to explore too much at once. I liked the characters, and look forward to reading more from this author.

Lilac is a struggling med student who just landed a job as a dog walker which also happens to come with room and board. This is a blessing until she meets the owner of the home and the puppy she is to care for. Slate, is recovering from a job related incident and just wants to be left alone in peace in quiet. Imagine him coming home to find he has a new sexy tenant and employee. And things just keep getting more interesting the longer he keeps her around.

Firstly, I am voluntarily leaving a honest review of this book. I thought this book was really well written. The chemistry between the two main characters were really off the charts HOT. I did have an issue with the audio recording. Mind you, it may just be how I perceived the recording but there seems to be an echo/resonance which was kind of distracting to me. Once it got going my hearing adjusted to it and I could tune it out but if I had to take a break, I had to readjust to it again when I continued. Another issue, Lilac's accent. I felt the narrator would not always used the accent when Lilac had dialogue. It wasn't always consistent. Lastly, the picture of the Slate's son, I remembered he showed her earlier in the book but then he did so again. the two scene were like mirrors to each other and didn't make much sense other than to fill in time.

Overall, I still enjoyed it very much as I felt it was a good start to the series.

Ohmigod...you know you’re in trouble when you start a book by wanting to lick the cover! Geez, this book is so freakin awesome from the very first page that I can’t say enough good stuff except get this book now! Slate has always been such an enigma...it just feels right to learn his story and see the love blossom between he and Lilac. This book has everything a romance reader wants: a kickass storyline; excellent characters who draw you right into the story; great action and suspense; and a HEA that is well worth waiting for. Stella Marie Alden...you ROCK!! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and was totally blown away!) ❤️❤️

Slate's story started off quickly, right from the get go, with Lilac showing up at his house and the way they met the first time. The story then entangled with so many subplots and events. It was good, but the story could have been spread out more, with less interactions behind the scenes maybe?
Slate and Lilac come together as the most unlikely couple, and find each other amidst the chaos of their own lives.

This is book one in the Patten Bodyguards series and for me it was just ok. A little too insta-love for my tastes. The chick had some issues but then i guess he did too. There was just no connection for me with either of these characters. The writing was good.

Pretty good story, easy mystery of bad guy😕. Likeable characters ,so why two stars really 1.5 stars but not an option? Because the story just didn't flow smoothly! At times I had to re-read a paragraph just to figure out we've jumped to another topic/day. Don't even get me started on how her family abandoned her but in the end all is forgiven and meeting for the holidays(without explaining how they got to that point!!). Had potential but fell flat!

Not very realistic.

The premise for the story was a good one but the execution was lacking. The author has too many balls in the air and when you have a rather short story with too many plot lines, something is going to give. In this case, it's any semblance of realism. There are lots of questions that do not get answered or that are tied up in a rather hasty, incomplete manner. The issue with Lilac's parents and the school for example. Those get dropped completely. The entire "bad guy" situation is glossed over without any real explanation of events. The whole story is just poorly written and there are a lot of editorial errors. Future stories by this author will be a pass for me.

Slate, book one in the Patten Bodyguard series, is the first book I’ve read by Stella Marie Alden, and it won’t be the last. I really enjoyed reading this book – it took 2 nights to read (which is the only time I get to read), so it was a fairly quick book, but enjoyable none-the-less. Book one was free, therefore there will be no “verified purchase” attached to this review.

Slate is recovering from a gunshot wound – he took a bullet for his employer and friend. While recuperating, a dog turns up on his doorstep, with a bullet wound of his own. Slate fixes him up, then needs a dog walker to walk him until he can find more out about the owner of the dog, whom Slate is inclined to believe, shot the dog in the first place. But Slate’s world is thrown into chaos when he’s supplied with a female dog walker, not the ‘male’ dog walker he requested.

Lilac Starbird (Lila-with-a-c as Slate calls her and soon to be resident doctor) will never forget her first night in the ‘accommodation provided’ guest house she has to live in while being a dog walker for Alexander Slate (just Slate) – who bursts in, stark naked, thinking he has a trespasser in his guest house, pointing a gun at her. When Lilac fights back, his wound starts bleeding, and his ‘appendage’ stands to attention. After she fixes him up, he grudgingly allows her to stay to walk the dog, whom Slate has named ‘dog’.

But when ‘dog’ brings a human hand back to the guest house and drops it at Lilac’s feet, things take a turn for the worse. Lilac didn’t immediately want to call the cops because of an incident that happened when she was younger and pack raped by guys at college, when the cops didn’t believe her about being drugged and raped, and all the frat boys backed each other’s story up. So, she was labelled as being known for making things up and not taken seriously.

I don’t want to go into any more detail about the story line. What I will say is I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It has instant attraction, which is a concern for the Hero because of what he lost. You feel happy, sad, really emotional (if you are that sort of person who has a tear brought to the eye when reading about what happened, don’t worry, you’re not alone!), funny in parts, a Hero who has a fight on his hands to win the affection of the sassy heroine who isn’t looking for any romantic entanglement, despite not wanting it himself.

The only gripe I have about this book is the repeated reason of Slate explaining about how the tragedy of his past unfolded on two separate occasions – to Lilac. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book – so much so that I have also purchased the other books that make up this series. This is a recommended read.
