Filled with memories from Mays to Musial ... Kell and Kaline ... Thomson to Trammell, any true baseball fan will want to dig into the summer game stories in this bestselling book by Hall of Fame broadcaster, Ernie Harwell. TUNED TO BASEBALL recounts Harwell's forty years announcing major league baseball for the Giants and Dodgers in New York, the Orioles, and the Detroit Tigers. Turn the pages and find all the courage, fear, humor, triumph and tragedy behind the big league headlines. Read it and you'll know why you love baseball.
I bought this book some 40 years ago and it’s set on my shelf all that time. I finally picked it up and was pleasantly surprised. It brought me back to a time when sports meant nothing in the big picture but everything in the life of a fan. Those days are long gone the game will never be like that again. It made me recall all the games my dad took me to a as well as the ones, the hundreds of ones, that we listen to on the radio. Ernie could have been family as often as his voice was heard in our home, or in our boat, or in our car or wherever we might be. It also brought back my most endearing recollections of baseball. That walking in to the old tiger stadium, in seeing the greenest grass under and through the canopy of the bleachers. The smell of the grass, the beer, and the crack of the bat will forever be my thought of baseball.
A treat for any and all Ernie Harrell fans. As the title implies, it’s like reliving one of his broadcasts without the actual game in between. Harrell wrote this in 1985, just after the Tigers won the World Series. It is part biographical and he tells a lot of stories I remember hearing over the 15+ years I listened to him in the radio. Great stuff, great man.
Ernie Harwell in his own words. Ernie was my soundtrack as a child through my mid-life when he retired. Ernie is too modest when he downplays his attributes as so few can be regarded as being better at broadcasting baseball. He's also quite the writer as evidenced by this book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as all Tiger fans would who know just how good we had it here while it lasted.
Hard to complain about a book written by the voice of my childhood, the voice of baseball. All the stories and insight into the game were great. I did find the book lacked direction and was more of a collection of baseball stories somewhat in chronological order, but still jumped around a lot. Great book though!
Interesting, fairly quick read. Ernie was definitely a great man. I liked all the stories and it would be interesting to see what he had to say about the next 20 years (book was written in 1985), like Jim Leyland and all!
Lovingly related memories and stories of the baseball broadcaster, Ernie Harwell. I spent a lot of time with Ernie, growing up, and this book is just like his broadcasts - honest, laid-back and easy to read.
Now 40-year-old book by longtime Detroit Tigers broadcaster is long on his career, managers, owners and other broadcasters but short on player insights, broadcast moments and teams analysis. Seemed like a nice man, but fans of the modern game won’t find much here.
Easily one of my favorite books I have ever read. It only took 232 pages to confirm what I have always suspected to be true, Ernie Harwell was one of the greats.
Ernie Harwell is the voice of legends where I’m from, as the most-recognized and respected broadcaster for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball.
This book tracks through his life journey, with chapters focusing on players he knew and situations he encountered. It’s important to note that this book also features first-hand accounts of when baseball became integrated, as Harwell worked for the LA Dodgers when Jackie Robinson entered the scene.
Told with humour, but always with kindness towards even the most abrupt of individuals, this book warmed my heart. The beauty of it is the fact that you don’t even need to be a baseball fan to enjoy this book. Sure, it may help with name recognition, but the book centres on the humanity of the people he came across throughout his storied career.
Here's the story of how I bought this book. Picking my wife up from the RenCen and there was Ernie- autographing copies of this book. Since I didn't have a credit card, I ran back to the car, pulled all of the change out of the ashtray and added to the five bucks I had in my wallet bought his book.
He autographed it to me, my wife and son. Being that it wasn't too crowded I had the opportunity to talkk with Ernie for about 20 minutes until my wife got off work.
I'm a lifelong baseball fan which is why I picked up this book in the first place. I was not disappointed! HOF broadcaster Harwell's insights and anecdotes were entertaining and oft times revealing. If you love baseball...
