NPC Tea: Volume 1

NPC Tea Issue Two

Rate this book
A world identical to our own – identical that is, apart from all the orcs, elves and magic… A love letter to Final Fantasy and Lord of the Rings, NPC Tea is about Cardiff’s least popular tea shop, Y Ddraig, run by a perfectionist elf and a laid-back fire summon.

NPC Tea follows an ex-fire summon, an elf and a magicless human as they attempt to save a failing tea shop in modern day Cardiff. Soon they find out that a lack of customers and caddies upon caddies of rotting tea are the least of their worries, when a type of banned magic rears it’s ugly head and threatens to destroy the entire city. Bryn, Oz and Hannah must unite if they are to save their business – and ultimately the city itself.

An 8 issue series, NPC Tea escalates from slice of life comedy into an epic fantasy, twisting typical RPG and fantasy stereotypes into a modern day setting. It’s about what happens when there are no more dungeons to crawl, when magic needs to be organized, and when orcs, elves and men try to live peacefully side by side – a balance that’s harshly tested when an entire city is threatened with destruction…

Hello! I'm an illustrator and writer from Cardiff, Wales.

I'm best known for my independent comic series, NPC Tea, which is about a tea shop run by orcs and elves, set in modern day Cardiff. This series was funded on Kickstarter, with six successful campaigns running from 2017 to 2020.
I graduated from Bristol UWE with a degree in Illustration in 2011, and after that completed a Masters in Animation at the University of Glamorgan in 2012. Since then I've worked as a freelance artist, with clients from the comics and games industries.

My review was first posted on Northern Plunder, you can read more of my reviews there too.

Initially I’d planned to review each issue seperately but each would end up more spoilery than the last. Instead, I’m deciding on giving an overall thoughts on the rest.

Hopefully this showcases my love enough to get you interested, as well as keeping enough storyline and elements hidden!

I believe issue 2 is where I fell in love with the series the most. It provides the addition of the conflict that’s happening in Cardiff. That they’ll have to work together to figure out the cause of an ancient power rising which threatens the entire city.

Also it’s when Hanny’s lack of magical powers are hinted at a lot stronger, though not something she confirms untill later in the story. Whilst being non-magical sounds troublesome, and well, it can be! There are also some bonus’ to it too.

Additionally, the rest of the issues introduce other prominent characters – my favourite appears in the third. The characters are so varied with great personalities, that getting to know them over the series is such a lovely experience.

You can’t help but feel attached to them. To want to protect them, especially Bryn who’s struggling with their past. (WHAT A MOOD) and Nix who’s scared of the past repeating! Ugh lemme keep these precious pals safe!!!

Oh oh and there’s some queer rep in this which is always a bonus.

The way Sarah seemlessly combines our world with well-crafted fantasy elements and a thorough history is just beautiful.

Anyway, to wrap things up, if it wasn’t clear already, I highly recommend this comic series. As does Jemma. I’m very excited to read the finale to see how the elements all tie up.
