V srpnu 1934 překonala Zdenka Koubková na Světových ženských hrách v Londýně světový rekord v běhu na 800 metrů. Tehdejší tisk ji oslavoval jako nejlepší běžkyni a možná i lehkou atletku světa. V Československu ji znal každý.
Uplynulo několik měsíců a ze Zdenky Koubkové se stal Zdeněk Koubek. Muž, jenž se vzápětí oženil, odjel na turné do Ameriky a další půlstoletí prožil jako ministerský úředník, veselý kumpán a prvoligový hráč ragby.
Jeho strhující a dosud nepopsaný příběh zmapoval Pavel Kovář na základě podrobného studia v archívech (včetně lékařských zpráv) i rozhovorů s pamětníky.

Couldn’t get past the first few pages of this. I hate the choice of referring to Zdeněk as “she” & the wrong name when referring to his pre-transition self - it makes the book unreadable for anyone with more than a shred of empathy towards trans people. Knowing what most czech people are like, this is not a surprising choice, but it’s just uncomfortable to read. And it’s made even more jarring by the choice of a first person narrative, so you can’t even tell what is fact and what is fiction (no citations of course). I really hate when authors insert thoughts into the minds and mouths of their subjects in non fiction.

Luckily there is a book called The Other Olympians coming out in April 2024 which is a biography of Zdeněk Koubek & another trans athlete Mark Weston, so I’ll be waiting for that book instead.
