Don't Dare the Devil

Rate this book
At age 18 Eden Daye loses her entire family to a vicious killer. Eden questions her own sanity when she describes the killer to the police.
“The . . . abductor threw your sister on its shoulder and leaped over the wall?” The agent questioned again.
“Not over it,” Eden said, her brow furrowed as she recalled the horrifying event. “To the top of it. A wall this tall is also deep It’s about four feet thick. It stood on top of the wall and . . . and—”
“And what?” Agent Knight’s voice was low and persuasive. “Howled!” Eden slapped her hand over her mouth as if trying to keep the words from tumbling out. “It howled like a wolf.”

With a degree in accounting, I set out to conquer my quiet little corner of the world.
My plan was to work for a major accounting firm and live a comfortable life.
One never knows where fate will lead. I soon discovered I liked taking chances and started acquiring small parcels of land to resale. Within a year, I found myself immersed in the fun of land brokering. My native state, Texas, is a wide-open community of wonderful people and vast amounts of land. Opportunities in Texas are limitless. Texas and the fact that I am a workaholic were the perfect recipe for success.
I have visited every state in the U.S. and lived in some, but Texas is always the one that calls me home. I thought I had the world by the tail; a nice little ranch that bordered a Texas lake, a horse and a few head of cattle. Life was good. Then I met a woman and life was no longer good, it was amazing.
Now my life is an adventure of love and laughter. My partner encouraged me to begin writing. I published my first book in 2014 and have been successful in the Mystery/Suspense genre. Too Strong to Die is my first gay book. I am proud to say that after one week, on 2/1/2017, it is the #1 (Paid) Lesbian book on Amazon. Thank you so much for making it happen. Please let me hear from you. Should I continue writing for our community or stick with my Mystery/Suspense books?

“Don’t Dare the Devil” is a wonderfully campy take on the werewolf story. Narrator Victoria Mei does a great job delivering author Erin Wade’s ridiculously yet entertaining cheesy dialogues and inner thinkings.

The story itself is filled with details and mysterious twisting plots, but there are lots of inconsistencies. Basically, be prepared to lift your eyebrows and roll your eyes numerous times throughout the eight hours. Think of the book as a good facial workout!

MC Dark is the mysterious and gorgeous badass who has never, despite being more than a bit older than her apparent 35 years, been in love. Until she meets MC Eden. Eden is alternately confident and assertive, and whiney and extremely jealous, distrusting, and clingy.

Eden is also alternatively brilliant (after one day as a psychology major at university, she is an expert on chemical castration and saves a werewolf clan from a group of rogue bad werewolves), and a complete dimwit. She defends her attempted rapist male fiance against all reason, and I lost count of the number of times she believed in werewolves, didn’t believe, did, didn’t, did, didn’t…..did.

I enjoyed the wacky story quite a bit, but I have mixed feelings about the romance between Dark and Eden. There was a very Bridget Essex like insta-attraction/lust/love, but the number of times they each did very not-love things to each other even after declaring love was annoying. I can’t give any specific examples without spoiling some of the many twists and turns, but be prepared for a rollercoaster ride for romance.

One historical detail woven into the story really made me laugh. First, a quick reminder of “The Winthrop Fleet” from Wikipedia:

The Winthrop Fleet was a group of 11 ships led by John Winthrop out of a total of 16 funded by the Massachusetts Bay Company which together carried between 700 and 1,000 Puritans plus livestock and provisions from England to New England over the summer of 1630, during the first period of the Great Migration.

In “Don’t Dare the Devil”, Eden’s family nemesis is Carter Winthrop, whose earliest immigrant ancestor arrived in the New World on the Winthrop Fleet. I loved this historical tidbit because my own earliest immigrant ancestor arrived in the New World as part of the Winthrop Fleet. It’s pretty funny thinking that one of my ancestor’s shipmates could have been a werewolf, and an ancient feud could still exist that involves my family. Wait…maybe that’s not funny after all?? This is a work of fiction, right? Uh oh.

I recommend “Don’t Dare the Devil” as a fun audiobook that doesn’t even begin to take itself seriously but will entertain you. 3.75* rounded to 4* (if not for the annoying four year incident near the end of the book, it would have been 4.25*).

Another winner!

Darke makes all the difference by helping to stop the brutally murders. When she is called in to protect a heiress and to track down the monster(s), Darke ends up with more than she bargained for. Don't dare the devil is an action packed story with phenomenal twists and turns. It is unique, has an excellent plot with smoking hot chemistry and it will keep you glued to the pages all the way to the end. Erin Wade really knows how to write engrossing stories.

Warewolves & ??

I didn't read the synopsis of the book very well or skipped over some info about the book. Not my type of book....However, I was very caught up in the story of two beautiful women, Eden and Darke. Eden had lost her father and sister to something sinister & unbelievable. Darke was sent in to protect Eden from what or whomever was taking out her family. Darke was a specialist in the FBI and was called in a special cases that were kept underwraps. Very few new exactly what Darke's specialty really was. Darke and her K-9 like partner were extremely good at what they did. Eden was 19 and Darke 35 or was she?

Not your normal cup of tea? All I can say is try it, you might be surprised! I was ;-)

I was lucky to have received a signed copy of this book from the author themselves. It was my first book by this author, so I had no idea what to expect. I am rating this 3.5 for two main reasons. One, it was fade to black scenes, I must have details in love scenes. Two, there was so much going on in the story that I lost track at times of the main plot of the story. Too many characters and too many side plots to keep track for my liking. This was not a bad story at all, it just wasn't my cup of coffee (I hate tea) This author is uber popular and is loved by many, they're very talented and I praise them for all the research they do for their stories. They did a very good job at hiding one of the protagonists hidden 'magical' talents. I don't know how else to word it without giving it away. I suspected something but I couldn't quite put my finger on it until the reveal was right in my face. The love story between the two protagonists was very sweet and tender, and I loved how protective they were to one another.

I would recommend this to anyone who loves action-adventure with a side of paranormal and a sprinkling of love.

Erin Wade...

Has done it again. I don't normally read books with vampires or werewolves which is odd cause my favorite tv show is Buffy. She writes in such a way that makes everything likeable. The main characters are dynamic and the stories are intriguing. Give this book a chance and you shouldn't be disappointed.

Lacking

The idea was a decent one, but I found the story to be too much tell and not enough show. I still didn’t feel connected to the characters or their situation when the story was complete.

When you think it over...... it starts again

I love this story. All the twists and turns make your head spin. Erin Wade is a natural writer for the unnatural tale.
I do recommend this story for those that like werwolf tales.

Hmmm

Eden didn’t seem at all distressed after her sister was abducted and she was relating the details to the police. That bothered me. Then we find out she’s only 18, so I can let it go… Interesting story.

I couldn't put it down.

Eden and Darker are quite a pair. I really liked Tess and Caz though. While the people were interesting, I think the car and wolf stole the show. What a wild imagination to create a story as this. Love the book and all MS Wade's tales.
