The Downside of Love

Rate this book
This isn’t a story about a love triangle. There is no triangle involved.
This isn’t a story about an accidental pregnancy. Although having a baby with her . . . I would.
This isn’t a story about lies and deception, even though at times I’ve lied to myself.

No, this is my story.

A story about sacrifice.
A story about a man who fell in love with the wrong girl.
A story I wish I never had to tell.

This is a story about the true meaning of the downside of love.

When I was in high school I occasionally read books but was consumed by other teenage things so I didn't take the time to appreciate a good book on a cloudy day, wrapped up in a blanket on the couch. It wasn't until I received a Kindle for Christmas one year that my world completely flipped upside down. When looking for books I came across the Contemporary Romance genre and was sold and I haven't turned back since.

You can either find my head buried in my Kindle, listening to inspiring heart ripping music or typing away on the computer twisting and turning the lives of my characters while driving my readers crazy with anticipation.

I currently reside in beautiful Colorado Springs where the sun is always shining and there is a trail waiting to be hiked on every corner. I share a lovely and warm home with the love of my life and my five, four-legged children.

Here’s the thing, I absolutely adore this author, love her writing, so going into this second book of this duet, I was nervous, so nervous on how and what this book would bring me. I questioned “do I even want to know what happens” after the way book one ended, my heart was on the edge of falling and breaking. I fell in love with Colby in book 1 so how it ended, I was wrecked. So book 2, here we go....

I’m going to try and keep this spoil free so my review will be vague as possible..

This book is nothing, absolutely nothing like I thought it would be. Not only was I shocked with the ending in book one, I am shocked, surprised, and amazed at how book two goes. And I am meaning this in the best way possible. Because I’m that sucker for happily ever afters. So with that ending we get in book 1 (definitely has to be read before the second book) I wasn't sure sure we'd get the HEA. Let's say, you get your happily ever after with this book, with this whole story actually. And may I dare say, I am absolutely 110% in agreement with how Miss Quinn spun it and wrote it 😁

“The downside of love is heartache and uncertainty, but the upside of falling is finding an everlasting love that will carry you through a lifetime of happiness.”

This author can manipulate my feelings, she flipped my thoughts, twisted them, and I can honestly say, I am so thankful for it ❤️ Damn Meghan Quinn, I’m in awe of your writing, love your books. Thank you for an Advanced copy of this book❤️

The downside of love is heartache and uncertainty, but the upside of falling is finding an everlasting love that will carry you through a lifetime of happiness.

I’m unequivocally head over heels in love with Meghan Quinn’s writing! I enjoyed the first book but even when I finished it, I was thinking I tend to love her romantic comedies so much more because I get her sense of humor, BUT, I will admit I was so wrong!! THE DOWNSIDE OF LOVE blows the first book out of the water and totally made me a believer in Meghan Quinn as an author who can deliver across multiple genres!! I can’t even begin to express how much this book touched my heart. I stayed up way past my bedtime last night because there was no way I would get any sleep until I knew how the story unfolded for everyone!! Quinn delivered an EXQUISITE conclusion to the ”Blue Line Duet”!!

At the end of the first book, I was so angry and already passing judgment. I should have known that this author wasn’t going to take the expected path with the continuation of the story. I loved how it all unfolds in book two. Totally unexpected and completely PERFECT!! I have read a series that took a similar approach and that was a five ++++ read for me too. I like when the author surprises you and makes you see things in a completely different light and now I know if this had been told any other way, I don’t think I would have felt so strongly about this book!!

This is one EPIC love story filled with CRUSHING ANGST!! I’ve got to prepare those of you who don’t have the strongest of hearts to be able to deal with that, but I think what you need is a nice glass of wine and a good buddy to read along with you that can get you through the rough patches! This is a duet that should be added to everyone’s TBRs!!

Here are my overall ratings

Hero: 5++++++++
Heroine: 5
Plot: 5+++++++
Angst: 5
Steam: 5
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 5+++++++

THE DOWNSIDE OF LOVE is available now!! Don’t waste a minute!! Go on and one-click!!

Awful duet, awful characters

This author has been hit and miss for me lately but this is definitely the most terrible story I have read. This review isn't a reflection of the author as a person but of this story and I am going to give you the spoiler everyone else wants to avoid because I believe if you pay for your books it will make a difference . This is Strder and Rory's story and it's just ugly. Rory is ugly, shes just an awful character that there is no redemption for in my mind. Basically she falls for Stryder and they end up together after they basically abandon Coby because Coby left to be a pilot. Rory is too shallow and self centered to care about anyone but herself in both books. It's all her all the time. I dont know what either character saw in her. She basically says she didn't really love Coby and he was just a challenge but she loves Stryder because they were friends. After she chased Coby down she was too weak to stand up for love and stayed home for her brother because apparently she is the only one who can care for him. Really? Ugh. Self righteous b#tch. She deserves no one. She ends things with Ciby in an awful way by just not ever answering him back so he "did not get his Hope's up." Really. Terrible character. And Stryder betrayed his best friend. Ugly. And Roroy gets mad at Coby for being mad at Stryder because Coby doesn't support Stryder when he breaks up with her. Ugh again. Awful. Dont waste your time!!! Why even write the first book of you are going to completely invalidate that whole love story?! Trivialize it. Stupid. AND really Ryan and Coby? Nope! Not having it. Rory and Stryder end up together and Coby gets screwed over with a broken heart.

5Emotional Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Meghan Quinn what an emotional journey you have taken me on with this duology... The first book is an absolute must before you read this one.... in my review of the first book I compared the book to a plane flight that landed you in the wrong destination.... now this book starts with you at that incorrect destination... at first all you can think is... this is not where I want to be! But then you take a closer look and you see this location is different but beautiful as well.... The sun is shining, the waves are crashing, the drinks are flowing... so you decide to stay and see how it goes, perhaps this will be the best vacation you’ve ever had???

This book sure made me alter my expectations... i’m going to need to be very vague in this review, because the entire book is really a spoiler and I do not want to spoil this for you... just know this is a beautiful emotional story that will take your emotions on a rollercoaster ride.... you’ll find yourself wanting things to happen that you never thought you would... apparently Meghan Quinn knows better than we do....

This book had everything you want in a romance... fantastic characters... sizzling chemistry... and all the feels... this book will make your heart beat a little faster and set those butterflies off in your stomach... and the ending..... perfection! And the epilogue... ugh please tell me there is a follow up, please!

Absolutely recommend to fans of an emotionally filled love story that will leave you with a smile on your face and hope in your heart💕

*** many thanks to Meghan Quinn for my copy of this book ***

Highly Recommended

The Downside of Love is a rare and phenomenal romance with a true portrayal of the human heart. Meghan Quinn pens an excellent and emotional read. I thought I knew what I wanted, I thought I new what I needed. But Quinn throws us a delicious curve ball and shows us what is really meant to be.

This is going to be a short and sweet review because anything I say about the story has a potential to be a spoiler for those who are itching to read it. I will say this though, Quinn has written an original and unforgettable novel. She writes a raw love story that anyone can relate to yet, so many know nothing about. Most romances are clear, cut, simple. Not this one... But you will want it and fall in love anyway.

Make sure to read this duet IN ORDER. I cannot stress that enough! And don't cheat and flip to the last few chapters because it will ruin the emotion and vulnerability of the story. Also, this book (and the first) will consume you. Friends and I who have been reading together have not been able to stop talking or thinking about it for days. It's that GOOD. I highly recommend it.

Thought I loved book 1, then I got to book 2 and realized it's so much better. So, naturally, I'm very happy with the outcome of the story. But even if I wasn't, it's about the journey. And, hey, fictional characters. :D

This book was a disappointment for me. The first book was a 5 star read but the way the story progressed in the second book left me with feelings of frustration, anger, confusion. I'm giving the plot a 0-star rating....and a 2-star general rating just because I was curious enough to see how the story ended and I made it to the last page...

In short:
Hero 3/5 | Heroine 2/5 | Plot (Point, Originality) 0/5 | Writing Style 4/5 | Steam 2/5 | Romance 3/5 | Angst-Suspense 3/5 | Darkness 1/5 | Humor 0/5 | Secondary Characters 3/5 | Drama-Conflict 4/5 | Mystery 0/5 | Twists 1/5 | Pacing Fast | Action 1/5

Not what i was expecting

Did not like the plot. Lost total respect for the characters. It just seemed like they used the guy. Played him. Total sleeze thing to do. The girl, such a shallow character in the end. I saw that they tried to give her credibility in her struggle but, she still lied about her feelings and made choices that weren't hes to make. I felt the main character could have been just fine on his own without that nonsense, would have ended up in the same place but much happier. Not my favorite.

******Spoilers Ahead******

Got to 89% (chapter 27) and I couldn't go on so its a DNF.

I disliked the female character so much. I didn't get how she pursued Colby to the extent she did in book 1. It was embarrassing and uncomfortable. She fell "deeply in love with him" and then ended up where she is in book 2 with Stryder.

"Brothers" don't betray each other and I honestly could not feel or got the point of this love triangle.

Her comparisons to the two men were nonsensical. Bit like peeling an onion and taking away the inner layers. Her treatment and rational of Colby was callous and for me she crossed the line and when she delivered that line "it's over" I honestly thought it she would come to her senses and realized how stupid she was being. Her actions were callous especially after how she pursued him so much. Her lack of consideration for his feelings and the way she just cast him aside with not thought that it wasn't over for him was MEH. What finished this for me was her fast fall for Stryder and her reasons for "loving him".

I didn't understand where Meghan Quinn was coming from with this duet. These two books just did not marry.

PS I eventually got to the end and yes, I won my bet. You won't need to bet where the next book is going.

Sadly, for me, this was one of the worse two parters I have read this year.

With The Downside of Love Meghan Quinn finishes off her heartrending Blue Line duet.

In The Upside of Falling we were left with a distraught Colby who upon coming home to bury his Gramps is witness to a sight that crushes him further. The Downside of Love fills the gaps between the time Colby left for flight school and when he comes back.

It is impossible to write a review describing more about it without giving it away. It is meant for the reader to experience all the emotions it evokes firsthand. The wonderful writing though, can certainly be mentioned along with the great character development, the twist in the plot I didn’t expect nor see coming. Yet this is not the book I wanted, nor expected. The mixed emotions I felt made it very difficult to read. I avidly read romance novels because of the escape they provide, hoping for that happily ever after that will give me a satisfied feeling once I finish the book. I experienced a bittersweet feeling.

I was saddened by the characters’ plights and glad that they found their way out from their dark past and towards happiness, even when I wasn’t a Rory fan. Had this been a stand-alone, I would have fallen head over heels with this book. Yet its predecessor’s backstory prevented me from fully enjoying it.

Kudos to Meghan Quinn for her brilliantly storytelling and ability to evoke such strong emotions.

The Downside of Love is the second book of the Blue Line duet by Meghan Quinn. It is a heartbreaking and bitter sweet contemporary romance, told from several points of view.

Well! Everything is right in the world again. I’m crying happy tears. As you know The Downside of Love is the second part of a duet. I’ll be honest at the end of book one The Upside of Falling I was heart-broken. I could not wait to dive into the second book because I was dying to know what happened to the lives of Rory, Ryan, Colby and his best friend Stryder. At the same time, it took me a bit of courage to continue because I was afraid I might harbor bad feelings for one or two of these characters. Something happened … it’s a big spoiler so you just have to read it and find out. My thought at the time was that there aren’t enough excuses in the world to justify what was happening between two people. Let me make it clear though there is NO CHEATING, NO BED HOPPING, or LOVE TRIANGLE … so you don’t have to worry about that …

Meghan did a amazing job with the characters. As I read their journey to find love which is rocky and full of ups and downs, I am convinced that what happened with these two were meant to be. Friends who lean on each other through difficult time eventually developed romantic feelings for one another. It’s also a bit of “I love someone but that person loves someone else” … They both tried hard to stay way but the undeniable chemistry, the strong bond, and the love they have for each other triumph over any spectacles. The heart does not choose who to love after all. In the end, it was faith that bought them together. My only concern is that when Rory finally explained her reasons … I felt she was a little too “matter-of-fact” about the whys and the hows given the deep love she had for him, and also knowing how he still feels about her. I love Rory though – she is a very sweet, caring, nurtured, compassionate person but I thought her affection for “him” was misplaced – because “he needed someone”. He did need someone desperately and I am completely sympathetic to the choices they BOTH made at the time … This is just my personally opinion though … In the end, everyone got their happy endings they so deserved. Meghan did a brilliant job of taking care of every single characters. Everything happened for a reason and the world is as it should be. And guess what? Looks like we are going to get more ... The epilogue gave us a promise for Ryan’s love story and I could not be more elated for the TWO of them 🙏❤

The Downside of Love is another raw, angsty, stunning, emotional read. It’s a story of friendship, finding oneself, soul searching, sacrifice, and the pursuit for love. The writing is phenomenal – I was completely consumed by her words from beginning until the end.

This duet completely stole my heart 💜 Best of Meghan’s work in my humble opinion 🙏

Proceed with caution: lots of swearing and caps. It's just a mess of words.

Title: The Downside Of Love (Blue Line Duet #2)
Author: Meghan Quinn
Genre: Romance

ARC

I feel manipulated. I feel confused. I feel angry. I feel distraught. Too many feeling for one so young hahahaha

The Upside of love (Blue Line Duet #1) left me distraught and hopeful that the end was just one big misunderstanding or something…anything! See? confused!

The downside of Love… well, I am honestly torn. On one hand, I am uncertain but understanding while on the other I was hoping for a second chance between Colby and Rory. I admit I WAS passing judgement left and right without a care in the world. But half way through, just like the characters I was coming to terms with the fact that life moves on; People make sacrifices for the greater good, hearts break, people lose loved ones, hearts mend, have a second chance at an everlasting love.

This book is a true definition of angst and I for one am content.

The Downside of Love is an emotional book to say the least. It will take you into a journey of emotions. A stunning conclusion to an epic duet.

I don't think I've ever hated a book as much as I hated this book.
If I had known how this book was going to go before I read it I wouldn't of bothered to read it.
When you start a duet about a couple you expect it to continue on about that 1 couple.
But this isn't what happened at all.
I really enjoyed the first book and I gave it 4 stars and after the cliffhanger I couldn't wait to get book 2. I was confused starting it as we were getting Stryder's POV but then as we carried on getting his POV and there was hardly any mention of Colby.
I went from liking Rory to hating her, she was meant to be in love with Colby but got over him rather quickly.
I started to skim read the chapters because I just wanted to find out what would happen with Colby. But I was so disappointed with the way it ended, I felt like throwing my kindle at the wall.
Rory ended finishing with Colby because he could be stationed anywhere being in the Air Force. But then the same thing could happen to Stryder.
I kind of hated the characters in this book, except Colby but I feel like his story has been ruined now.

So many feels, what an emotional roller coaster The Downside of Love by Meghan Quinn turned out to be. I truly could not put this book down.

It's hard to review a book without mentioning names and giving anything away, so I'm just going to keep it short and share how this book and duet made me feel.

When I started The Downside of Love it felt like someone punched me in the stomach, the feelings of confusion and hurt took over and I wasn't sure if I could keep reading with an open mind.
BUT knowing author Meghan Quinn is a genius with her pen and words I kept turning the pages and soon I was hooked, I fell in love with these sensitive, complex characters and I was totally taken with them.
They made my heart ache with their pain and on so many occasions I wanted to reach into my kindle to hug them. They'd been through so much and seeing them together I had no doubt they were true soul mates and belonged together.

This duet will make you feel, you will smile, you will swoon, you will want to throw yourself on the floor and sob like a baby but then when you think your heart can't take much more you will slowly start putting the pain behind and relishing the unconditional love blossoming in front of you.
By the end I was left with a satisfied and a happy heart full of love and knowing that all is right and it was all meant to be.

A big thank you to Meghan Quinn for writing and sharing this beautiful, heartfelt story with us. It's been a very long time I've felt so many emotions while reading and I highly recommend you read the Blue Line Duet.

Gah… Meghan is a pure genius. After that cliffhanger and the book hangover from hell, Meghan wrote this beautiful, amazing story.

If like most of us you were left breathless at the end of book 1. You will get all your answers and so much more with book 2. It will be worth all the sleepless nights, heart palpitations and anxiety waiting for this book.

I can’t say much without giving anything away and that would be wrong to Meghan’s loyal readers. But I will say that never have two books moved me more. I cried my eyes out when I read Dear Life and nothing comes close to the emotions I felt with this duet. This book isn’t just a romance story. This is about being selfless. About sacrifices. About being yourself and never letting anyone bring you down. It’s about finding that soul-searching love and navigating through the good, the bad and the ugly. Meghan’s words will take you on a journey that will have you laughing and crying but will fill your heart with so much emotion it will be hard to let these characters go.

“The downside of love is heartache and uncertainty, but the upside of falling is finding an everlasting love that will carry you through a lifetime of happiness.”

I’m so glad Meghan took a chance and shared this story with us.

Omg I just devoured this book. It pretty much just consumed my life. When this hit my kindle last night, I stopped my current read and I had to dive right in. This story was absolutely beautiful and brilliant. I hands down love this book more than the first. I’m not really an emotional person (cause emotions are ew) but they were all over the place with this one. See that blob over there? That’s my cold dead heart that was ripped out of my body and thrown on the floor. God, this story is so g-dang good. For really reals, this duet is a must read. I’m not just saying that because I love this authors words and they speak to me. I feel like this was her best book to date and I’ve pretty much loved them all. Gah, the feels are so strong right now. This is reread worthy. I just need to throw it out there again on my huge mega love for this duet. Book hangover!

My favorite quote:
“The downside of love is heartache and uncertainty, but the upside of falling is finding an everlasting love that will carry you through a lifetime of happiness. Life is full of chances. Opportunities. Challenges. But it’s what you do with them that counts.” <—-YES! Heart eyes and an emotional high five!

NO SPOILERS!

The Downside of Love was absolutely BRILLIANT! It was an incredibly unique, sexy, emotional, and beautiful conclusion to the Blue Line Duet, and I absolutely loved it with all of my heart and soul! The storyline and characters were phenomenal, and Meghan Quinn completely blew me away with her extraordinary talent and writing style. The Downside of Love is the perfect example of why I love Meghan Quinn and her amazing books so much. Not only can she write hot and hilarious romantic comedies, but sexy, emotional, and heartbreaking/heartwarming contemporary romances as well. The Downside of Love completely blew my mind in every best way possible, and I am so excited for what’s to come!

The storyline was completely unexpected, but even better than I ever could’ve imagined. It was so much different than I thought it would be, and certainly took me by surprise. Even though it wasn’t what I was expecting, I truly couldn’t have loved it more. It was phenomenal from beginning to end, and I absolutely adored it with my entire being. It was emotional and heartbreaking at times, and there were a few aspects that I didn’t like whatsoever, but it also made me so freaking happy that I could’ve burst with tears of joy. The Blue Line Duet has definitely been the most unique and memorable duet that I’ve ever read, and has hands down been my favorite one to date. Meghan Quinn blew me away with this story, and I will never, ever forget it.

The characters were even better in this installment, and I couldn’t have loved them more. I loved their personalities and red-hot chemistry together, and the strong connection and friendship they had together. Since I don’t want to give spoilers away, I won’t say any of their names, because that might ruin it for people who haven’t read it yet. I will say that the two main characters have been some of my top favorite fictional characters ever. I loved them to pieces and couldn’t get enough of them and their story. It definitely wasn’t an easy journey, but all of the ups and downs were completely worth it in the end. Every feeling and emotion I felt while reading this book will be ingrained in me for a long time to come, and I can’t wait to return to this story and these characters over and over again. They will stay in my heart and soul forever.

The Downside of Love was a unique, sexy, beautiful, and emotional conclusion to the Blue Line Duet, and I would HIGHLY recommend it and The Upside of Falling! Meghan Quinn truly outdid herself with this duet, especially The Downside of Love, and I was absolutely ecstatic with the way everything ended. The Blue Line Duet was unlike any duet I’ve read before, and I will hold it near and dear to my heart forever. After reading the epilogue, I am so freaking excited to see what Meghan Quinn has in store next!

I really don’t like this duet lol

Rory is SO annoying. She wants to fix everyone. First with Colby and then with his best friend. She goes from Colby to Stryder (I’m sorry what kind of name is that???) because they’re both broken men that she wants to save. I don’t care that she switched guys, even though I loved Colby in the first book. This one had so much self loathing and “pick me” vibes that I’m finishing this duet so annoyed.

Don’t recommend.

I can't believe I am saying this about one of my favorite authors, but I disliked this book so hard! What the heck?? I was so upset by what these 2 did to Colby I couldn't sleep!! And Rory had the nerve to act like he abandoned Stryder?? She was awful. Stryder was awful. They deserve each other. Poor Colby! Stupid plot!!

I wasn't sure I was going to recover after the end of book 1 and I was very skeptical that I would enjoy this one. Meghan Quinn thankfully proved me wrong and somehow twisted this story to have the ending I never realized I even wanted. This one is super emotional and pulled on my heart strings. Absolutely loved it!

When I read the first part of this duet, something was off to me.  Some people said that they thought I would enjoy the second one more. :)  Well, I'm here to tell you that's exactly what happened.  And this will be a hard review to do without spoiling it so I'll probably keep it short.

Have you ever felt like there was something keeping you from fully connecting with a book and you can't quite put your finger on it?  Then all of a sudden you have an aha! moment and it's all so clear.  I had my aha! moment while reading the second installment in this duet.  Everything made sense.  Why I was loving this one so much more, and why the first one I had problems with.  THE DOWNSIDE OF LOVE felt right from the start.

I connected with this book in a way I didn't with the first one.  I loved the characters, all of them.  I could sympathize with their pain.  I admit I wish some of the problems, which are serious emotional issues, would've been shown as addressed a little more in the end.  That's my one complaint about this book.  It ends rather easily and simply.  And left me thinking: what about those issues?  Maybe some more time should've passed and had the characters come back a little more emotionally stable.  That might've been something I could believe in.

Even with that, this was a great story.  Addictive from start to finish.  I kind of just wanted to forget the first book ever happened and just think of this as a one book story.  But that wouldn't work, would it?

4 no 5 no 4 CROWNS

I have been wavering with my rating for this book so I’m going to choose not to rate IT because I want to give it all the stars and then there are also things that make me so angry that I want to tear it apart and throw my kindle across the room. No matter how angry I am at certain characters it is a beautifully tragic romance that doesn’t show readers the idealized romance novel love but the real world, hard love.

This is continuation of book one, The Upside of Falling. It follows the story of Colby, Rory, and Stryder as they navigate life and love. It is hard. It will make readers angry. It will have them hating characters. But it is also an authentic look into the idea that you can love someone, connect with them and not be with them forever. It showcases that love can be transformational and but not permanent. That some are just mean to help you grow and evolve, but they are never meant to be your always and forever.

Colby and Stryder are both such tragic characters with different forms of abuse in their pasts. They find solace and brotherhood in the Air Force, which is part of the reason readers love them. These men deserve love and happiness. They are more than their past, though. They are honorable, gentle, kind, and loving men. Both are true book boyfriend material, which is part of the reason people dislike Rory so much.

Rory is a hard character for me and I’m going to assume other readers to like. I struggled with understanding where she is coming from with letting one go and trying to find love again, and being so mad at her for even beginning a relationship at all with the one. I felt at times her need to fix people made her selfish. She wanted to be needed, to feel important, but I never felt it was truly selfish. It is a part of her character. What I didn’t love is her comparison between the two, but there is definitely a distinction made between being in love with someone and loving someone, especially when we spent so much time watching her “love” the one guy. However, she is human and our emotions change and evolve. It would be wrong to condemn someone for changing how they feel. It happens. It didn’t change the fact that I wanted to throat punch her, because I did. I wanted to because I love the two men in this book.

What Meghan Quinn did with this book, though, is make me understand. I didn’t want to like the new couple. I wanted to hate them, and I did for a good portion of the book. She slowly won me over. It doesn’t mean that I liked it. I was almost mad at myself for understanding, and at the end of the book, I had mix of emotions swirling through me, happiness for the couple to get their HEA and sadness for the one left behind because I wanted an HEA for both men and it just isn’t possible, which is really how life goes.

This book is not for he faint of heart, but I think what Meghan Quinn’s honest look at real world love is moving and emotional and authentic. And for that, there is value in this journey
