Ворчливый одинокий гном Бука развесил сушиться варежки. Но вот незадача - ветер унес их. А когда Бука погрозил ветру кулаком, озорник сорвал с его головы и красный колпак. Разве их теперь поймаешь!
В лесу под старым дубом живет большая семья кроликов: мама, папа, тетя и дядя, дедушка и детей - не сосчитать, ведь они все время носятся, кричат, скачут. Два крольчонка, Нина и Ника находят среди листьев и мха красный колпак, унесенный ветром у гнома, который всегда приходит в лес на Рождество. Но что такое Рождество? Белки и вороны рассказали, что Рождество - это самый радостный праздник. Как его встречать, никто не знает, но все ждут его с нетерпением и готовятся к приходу гнома: сочиняют радостную гномичью песню, пекут вкусности, прибираются в доме, готовят подарки и наряжают из всякой всячины дерево в лесу.
Но гнома все нет и нет. Тогда крольчата отправляются на его поиски!
Для младшего и школьного среднего возраста.

About the author

Ulf Gottfrid Stark was a Swedish author and screenwriter (he adapted several of his own books for film and wrote the screenplay for the 1999 film Tsatsiki, morsan och polisen).

Stark collaborated with the illustrators Anna Höglund and Mati Lepp.

From 1989 to 1998 he was an elected member of the Swedish Academy for Children's Books Svenska barnboksakademin. In 1998 he received the Nordic Children's Book Prize.

Stark was born and grew up in Stureby, Stockholm Municipality, which place features in several of his books. Stark's interest in writing started early; during his time at secondary school he was introduced to writing by his classmate Peter Curman, and in 1964 he wrote his first poetry Ett hål till livet. Following this, Stark's interest in writing for a career was greatly encouraged.

Absolutely charming! The story and illustrations are wonderful, and it's such a sweet and gently humorous story! My awesome sister left this on our doorstep on the solstice, along with a funny stuffed tomte, and now I need to find someone to do this to next year!

We did not read this story as intended. Though there is a chapter for each day of advent, we instead plowed through all 100 pages in two sittings. A charming story with beautiful illustrations, my kids loved it.

This book is intended to last for 24 days - one chapter for every day of December up until Christmas (we have the "Heiliger Abend" on December 24th which is already part of Christmas). And I think it's a very nice idea for little children. But patience is definitely not my strong suit so I lasted 8 days, but then I couldn't hold myself back anymore so I finished the book last night.

The story is pretty easy, it was intended for small children after all. However, the story is cozy and warm and full of funny little scenes and the publisher rounded things off with really cute drawings of forest animals on every page.


We are meeting Grantl (that is actually a German dialect version of "grantig" which means grumpy), a gnome (? I think that's the wrong word for it, he's one of those little creatures with red pointy hats that are usually depicted as Santa's helpers). He acts as if he cannot be botherd by others and just wants his peace but really he would like some friends and company and has a good heart. One day a storm takes his hat, gloves and a road sign and blows them into the forest where two rabbit children find them. The sign is old and has some letters missing so the word WEIHNACHT appears (=Christmas). Thus begins the story of how Christmas came to the Grindelwald (name of the forest).

My first time reading a book in Norwegian and writing a review in Norwegian, so here goes!


Dette er første gang jeg leser en bok på norsk. Jeg elsker denne boken. Søte dyr på eventyr, juletradisjoner og alle hjelper hverandre. Og den gretten nissen er egentlig snill. Det er en gledelig og morsom historie.
Jeg vil lese denne boken hvert år.

Grump was a solitary tomte, living in the converted doghouse of a long abandoned old home, and although he continued his duties of keeping an eye on the place, he was none too happy about it. Grudgingly caring for a sleepy bee that he had rescued from a spider's web, he became extremely irate after losing both mittens and hat to the strong December winds, deciding that he would no longer be a tomte at all. Elsewhere, a large and happy family of rabbits, discovering his hat and mittens, and learning that they belonged to the "Yule Tomte," become convinced that Grump is coming to visit them. Together with the other woodland animals, the rabbits make all of the preparations they can for the visit, only to find themselves waiting in vain. Can Binny and Barty, two of the rabbit family's youngest members, track down the tomte, and bring him to the Christmas celebration...?

Originally published in Swedish as Jul i Stora Skogen, and then in English by the Edinburgh-based Floris Books, The Yule Tomte and the Little Rabbits: A Christmas Story for Advent is a sweet work of fantasy for the holiday season. Divided into twenty-five short chapters, it is intended to be read throughout the season of Advent, although I myself read it in one sitting. I love stories about tomte - little gnome-like creatures said to care for homes and farms in Scandinavian folklore, they are known as nisse in Norway and Denmark - and have been meaning to read Ulf Stark's book for a few years now. I'm glad I did, as I found the story both humorous and heartwarming. I particularly liked the subtle way in which Grump is depicted, as he verbally grouches at the various animal characters he encounters, declaring he isn't interested in taking care of them, all while taking care of them. The accompanying artwork from Eva Eriksson is lovely, capturing the charm of the characters and the beauty of the wintry world around them. Recommended to young fantasy lovers looking for stories about tomte, or set at Christmas. For my part, I look forward to reading the summer sequel, The Midsummer Tomte and the Little Rabbits .

У цій книжечці 25 коротких розділів, тож її можна читати з адвент-календарем, щотижня запалюючи нову свічку. "Різдво у лісі" — це новий для мене Ульф Старк, я звикла до його реалістичних оповідок із дітьми в головних ролях, тут же йдеться про гнома, його "домашнього улюбленця" джмеля (де той джміль взагалі взявся в грудні?..) і ще цілу зграйку звірів. Історія протяжна (наскільки це можливо у форматі книжки-картинки) і сумовита, з ілюстраціями в стриманих барвах. Сама фабула про буркотуна-відлюдника, який на Різдво проявляє доброту до незнайомців, це вже святкова класика. Проте були в цій книжечці моменти, від яких стискається серце. Наприклад, те, що гном мешкає в давно покинутому будинку: ось він ходить кімнатами, де колись жили люди, ось він гойдається на іграшковому конику, якого, певно, любила якась дитина, ось табличка про продаж, але дім нікому не знадобився... Ох, трохи забагато печалі, як на різдвяне читання.

Чомусь зима - це особливий час для дитинства. Звісно, коли ти малий, тебе люблять і ти у безпеці, то кожна пора року має свої переваги, але саме взимку діти найсильніше відчувають магію довкола і вірять у дива.

Перший день грудня, такий сніжний і прохолодний, мав обов‘язково розпочатись із доброї книги. Такої, де є місце передсвятковому настрою, читання якої приносить дітям радість, а дорослих повертає у дитинство. «Різдво у лісі» Ульфа Старка - це саме та історія💛

Гном Буркотун, з червоною шапкою і сірими рукавичкам, доглядає старий будинок. Не те, щоб комусь це справді було потрібно - господарів-бо давно нема - але Буркотун щодня сумлінно береться до роботи. То годинник заведе, то на дерев‘яному конику погойдається, то обійде стайню. Аж одного дня його комфортне життя зазнає змін: потрапляє на очі джміль, що за ним треба доглядати, бо ще замерзне, а тоді вітер відносить геть шапку та рукавиці. Є з чого побуркотіти!

Речі гнома знаходять малі цікаві зайченята, які й знати не знають, хто такий гном, що таке сніг і Різдво. Направду, і дорослі звірі того до кінця не тямлять, але здогадки мають, а тому лісове браття береться готуватись до Різдва і приходу гнома (без нього ж нічого не розпочнеться!). Як вони це роблять і чим усе закінчилося - читайте самі☺️

Хоча краще не самі, а усією родиною, з солодкими обіймами, святковими ліхтариками і теплими трунками! Найменшим буде цікаво слухати і роздивлятись ілюстрації, старших можна попросити почитати вам вголос, доки ви, наприклад, спечете їм печиво. Бо ж для чого нам дана зима? Саме для того, аби навчитись цінувати моменти із найдорожчими, дарувати тепло один одному, і разом вірити в дива💫

Lovely, warm, cozy book. It falls right in the in-between land between picture book and chapter book, making it a great holiday read aloud to do day by day over Advent or all in one sitting. The story is sweet and simple, the message is there but not heavy handed, and there's just enough of a different culture to provide interest. To be savored.

I liked the concept of this book - like a book advent calendar, with a chapter for each day. However, the chapters were so short my kids always wanted more. I think that was my only complaint - I doubt if many people are actually able to draw it out all of December. The illustrations were pretty nice.

What can I say, I love curmudgeonly characters and Tomte is about as grumpy as they get. A funny Christmas story for those who celebrate Christmas, those interested in Swedish Yule traditions, and or those who enjoy reading longer, more classically structured stories to their young kids at night. Bonus features: cute bunnies, faeries, and a bee.

Неймовірно сподобалася, хоча я чомусь обходила цю книжку у книгарні стороною. Напружувала ймовірність натрапити на чергову чарівну Різдвяну щасливу історію, але виявилося, що це достатньо життєва і неймовірно мила казка з купою кроликів, білочок та мишок.
Сердитий гном особисто мені дарує надію, що не все так погано, навіть коли ти почуваєшся сердитим.

Книга шведського письменника Ульф Старка "Різдво у лісі".
Добра, зворушлива книга, в якій надзвичайно гарно висвітлено те, що дива бувають, в них лише потрібно вірити і трішки зачекати.
Головний герой гном буркотун. Він мені дуже сподобався. Гномик нагадував мені мого старшого сина, який сердиться, бурчить, що все йому не так і не таке, а потім посмішка на личку з'являється)) Наш гномик хоч і буркотун, але має добре серце. Він допомагає звіряткам і вміє щиро радіти.
Можливо якби будиночок не був би занедбаний, якби в ньому жили люди, гном не був би таким самотнім. Він знав де повинна лежати кожна річ і кому вона належала.
Головний герой не один, в даній розповіді їх багато - величезна сім'я кроликів. Вони всі такі різні і дуже кумедні. Найшовши в лісі червону шапку гнома, вони вирішують що скоро прийде Різдво. Всі чекають свята. Виявляється його люблять не тільки дорослі, діти, а ще й звірята. Приготування в лісі звірят дуже зворушливі.
Радимо читати книгу і дорослим і діткам. Затишок і гарний настрій гарантовано.

This is a sweet story from Swedish tradition. "Grump, the Yule Tomte, lives all alone, which is exactly how he likes it! He's waiting for Christmas to arrive when all of a sudden a gust of wind steals his mittens from the washing line and his hat from his head. That's the last straw - he won't be the Yule Tomte anymore!

"Binny and Barty, the rabbit children, live with their family in the forest. They've never heard of Christmas, or the Yule Tomte, until the wind brings them some strange gifts..."

The illustrations are absolutely charming, and this would make a great gift book for a family with young children because it's written in 25 brief chapters meant to be used as an Advent calendar.
