Dana Marton's DRAGON
Draknart is the scourge of the countryside, a dragon well accustomed to defeating and devouring all the knights and sacrificial maidens sent his way. But when another maiden turns up at his cave, he finds that she's not the easy meal he expected. Einin of Downwood is fierce and unafraid... and she's armed for battle. Intrigued, Draknart realizes that not only does his intended victim arouse more than just his appetite, her arrival is could be fortuitous in more ways than one.
Flood, famine and war has ravaged the village of Downwood, and the local priest blames Draknart's evil influence. Hoping to lift the curse on her village, Einin seeks out the dragon with the aim of being a slayer rather than a sacrifice. What she doesn't know is that Draknart is a dragon under a fairy queen's curse himself, doomed to transform to a man from midnight until dawn. To her surprise, Draknart offers her a bargain, one that might help her village - but at a high cost. With few options and even fewer resources at her command, Einin has no choice but to make a deal with a dragon...
I'm an author and Louisiana native living in Texas with my husband, three smalls and a big doofus dog. I have lived in Spain, hiked the Teton Mountains, honeymooned in Scotland, ridden in competition rodeo and am the great great granddaughter of a Nicaraguan president. I also hate doing laundry and refuse to iron anything.
I've loved storytelling since forever. I published my first short story with Amber Quill Press and have since written several other tales. A love of the bad boy in fiction always inspires me.
Oh Grace... What is this dropping of new stories out of the blue, but we're still waiting on The Ippos King??
But I'll read this though, of course I'll read this and I will love it no doubt, because you wrote it, but there is an Anhuset sized pain in my heart...
I just finished Madfall: A Duo of Dragon Shifter Novellas and surprisingly I thought Grace Draven's story was entertaining but a bit weak (at least for her since she is one of my 5 Star authors) so 3.5 Stars but it was more romance than action so that might account for my taste since my mood was a bit more action oriented.
Surprisingly Dana Marton's story was exceptional and I loved it, I have seen this basic plot a few dozen times but this one becomes very original after a chapter or 2 and one of the best parts is when you think it is over she does a couple of epilogues to bring you the future of our couple, loved it even more so 5 Stars. The couple was perfect but I should note that it was a love/hate relationship for a good part and since I have just finished "Iron and Magic" by Ilona Andrews which was also a serious love/hate relationship I might have been in the mood for that type of story.
I’m such a fan of Grace Draven’s that any story with her name that crosses my path automatically finds its way into my TBR. This dragon-themed anthology features a reissue of a previously released novella, but it’s one I haven’t read.
Draconus tells the story of Leida, a woman who was once the favorite of a dragon lord. She ran away with a small piece of his treasure and as this novella begins, she has been located and dragged back to face him for her crimes. Magnus would be within his rights to kill her for stealing from him, but he would much rather keep her alive and in his grasp. It takes no time at all to realize these two still want each other desperately; his anger and her fear quickly give way to the desire and sexual undercurrent between them. There is a fair amount of on-page loving, and it’s pretty steamy.
But here is the thing, this story is super-predictable. You will know in just a few pages how the entire thing will play out… from why Leida ran away to what Magnus’ biggest treasure is… to the secret she is hiding and how he’ll react. The storytelling is fine and has a dark fantasy feel familiar to Draven readers (albeit maybe a little more liberal in the sex department.) Don’t expect it to tread any new ground, though. There are no surprises. And it’s too short to develop much feeling for the characters.
Not my favorite from Draven, but if you want to hit all the stories in her backlist, this is your opportunity to check out one of her older titles.
Dragon Lord is my first read from Dana Marton. It tells the tale of a fierce young woman named Einin who faces a dragon in hopes of slaying him and turning the tide of fortune for her village. Draknart find himself surprisingly interested in her. There have been plenty of virgins sacrificed to him and knights who have tried to slay him, but she is the first combination of the two. He ends up letting her leave with one of his talons, and a promise she would return in two weeks to give herself to him. But when she comes back, he has a bright idea about how to use her to break his curse. The last thing either expects is to fall in love with the other.
This story has a midieval feel to it. More than that, though, the author created a world that is steeped in violence toward women and misogyny. Of course Einin would rather live with the dragon then in the world of humans. Sadly, I didn’t really feel the love between them. On Draknart’s part, it felt more like a blend of entertainment and curiosity. For Einin, it was a taste of freedom and basically just somebody who let her be herself. For sure, I didn’t feel any angst or even solid sexual tension. For crying out loud, they didn’t even have a real choice when they finally did the deed.
I wish I had better news, but I just didn’t love this one.
Overall, I am a little disappointed in this anthology. I had high hopes because it had Grace Draven’s name on it, but it did not quite satisfy for me. Maybe it would be a bigger hit for you.
Half torn because I loved the second story, hence the four stars
Let me start by saying I own all of Grace Draven’s books and short stories. She’s on auto buy for me. However, this one was a hard miss. It was, to be short, very boring. I actually skipped several pages just to finish that section of the book and continue on to the next story. The main characters literally talked to each other the whole time, and it was just to figure out why the heroine left the dragon hero, and believe me, it was not a special reason, you could see it a mile coming, and the heroine got many a side eye from me. Grace Draven will still be on auto buy, though.
Now Dana Marton’s story: wow. I have two of her fantasy books and they’re AMAZING. I’ve been waiting forever for another to come out. Anyway, her story is FULL of action with two scrappy leads. It will suck you in right away. I mean, it culminated in a god and a goddess and a couple of other things you wouldn’t have guessed coming. No uh puns intended. I wish this was actually a full novel as I dreaded to get to the end. Please write more fantasy, Dana Marton :)
REVIEW: MADFALL is the combined duo of dragon shifter novellas by Grace Draven and Dana Marton
DRACONUS by Grace Draven
3.5 stars--
NOTE: Draconus was originally released in 2005
DRACONUS by Grace Draven is an adult, paranormal/fantasy romance story line focusing on dragon lord Magnus Silverclaw, and his former human mistress and servant Leida of the Glimmer South, who disappeared four years earlier. Finding the ‘dragon’ whom she loved in a passionate entanglement with another woman, Leida took what wasn’t hers to take, and headed to places unknown. Four years later, captured and now a prisoner of the dragon she loved, Leida would beg mercy for her life but in doing so must reveal a secret that would change the dynamics of her relationship with the dragon she loved.
Magnus is an alpha male; a dragon lord revered by all he commands but loved by the only woman who has escaped his hold. Leida has loved her dragon lord from the very start but jealousy, envy and a lack of communication force Leida to run to save her heart.
DRACONUS is a quick read; a story of betrayal, misunderstanding and heartbreak; secrets and revelations. Grace Draven pulls the reader into a story of romance and forgiveness. There is limited world and character development-I was hoping for a little more information about the missing years for both of our story line characters. The premise is entertaining; the romance seductive and passionate.

DRAGON LORD by Dana Marton
4 stars
DRAGON LORD by Dana Marton is an adult, paranormal/fantasy romance story line focusing on dragon Draknart, and human female Einen of Downwood.
Einen is an anomaly in her village; a strong, independent young woman who would become Downwood’s most recent virgin sacrifice to the giant dragon who lived under the mountain. To his own shock and dismay Draknart would discover that he was quite attracted to the scrappy, little human, a surprise that comes at a cost for both man and beast. Cursed to live a dual life as both man and beast, Draknart prepares to make a sacrifice of his own. What ensues is the building friendship and relationship between Draknart and Einen, as they prepare for what lies ahead.
Dana Marton reveals the backstory and history for both of our leading characters-from Einen’s struggles to survive to the events leading up to Draknart’s curse by the gods. The premise is engaging and entertaining; the romance is passionate and captivating; the characters are colorful, charismatic and sassy.
I already read Grace Draven's short story and loved it, but the one by Dana Marton was new, though I've enjoyed her Reluctant Concubine and Accidental Sorceress books, so I was expecting a good tale and wasn't disappointed. While the story is short, it's humorous and satisfying.
Both stories have strong female heroines who hold their own against the arrogant male dragons they fall for. Both dragons obviously love their women, but need that extra special nudge to admit it which leads to fun antics. I liked the balance of fantasy and romance in both stories. Well done ladies!
I recommend this for anyone who enjoys short stories about steamy dragon fantasy romance.
Three stars for Draconus. Obviously an older, less compelling work from Grace Draven. Her newer stuff is much more complex. Five stars for Dragon Lord. A quick, amusing introduction to a new-to-me author. Can't wait to try more stuff by Dana Marton.
Oh my goodness this book is steamy! Didn’t expect it by looking at the cover. I preferred Dragon Lord over Draconus though. Both pretty good short stories!
Grace Draven-Draconus- Leida of the Far Lands is a prisoner. A crime she did commit. When Magnus Silverclaw stands before her. Yes she stole from him. He awaits her punishment. She wasn’t sure what to expect, but when the necklace was around her neck it was a fate worse then anything imaginable.
Dana Marton- Dragon Lord It was funny, and I liked the banter between the two characters.
Draknart was cursed by a goddess into being a half man and half dragon. Man from midnight until dawn. When a maiden that is given up to be sacrificed becomes to difficult for him he has other ideas for Einin of Downwood.
Einin is horrified by what Draknart has in mind, but refuses to marry any man in her village. But soon starts having feelings for him. She makes a deal with him. Is she crazy to do such a think?
OK, I'll admit that I bought this book because I'm a huge fan of Grace Draven. I've never even heard of Dana Marton prior to this, so I had no expectation whatsoever going in. While Ms. Draven's story was excellent as always, it was Lord Dragon (Ms. Morton's story) that captivated me completely.
The Lord Dragon is Draknart, and his character is drawn in such a tongue-in-cheek way that it's so funny and delightful without even trying. His inner thoughts had me giggling and laughing all the way. Yet, the story is also romantic. Needless to say, I downloaded Dana Marton's other fantasy novels after reading this (the Hardstorm Saga), which were as delightful.
The illustration on the cover is way cooler than this anthology deserves. Dravens story was definitely the better of the two and while I really like her writing this stories central plot worked itself out too easily to me. It was a huge deal and then it was just solved so quickly. 3 out of 5 stars. This is the first book I've read by Marton and I don't think I would read one again by this author. Marton spent so much of the book turning the female lead into an object. Her male counterpart admits to "swiving" and then murdering many women but somehow the female character finds him forgivable and stays with him no matter how many times he betrays and objectifies her. 1 out of 5 stars.
A definite departure of my usual mysteries, but if you are into Fantasy/erotic romance then this is absolutely the book for you! The book has steamy sex scenes to get you heated while wrapping the scenes with a decent plot to also entertain. I definitely would recommend this duo of short stories for someone who likes a good romping sex scene! The character development was good as well. Strong characters with distinct personalities to enhance the plots.
DRACONUS: 3 stars - This is Grace’s early writings. It’s very slow and not the typical Grace Draven books of today. Not a bad read, just not as good as her other books.
DRAGON LORD: Wow!! I was not expecting this to be so good and entertaining! 4.5 stars! I really wish this was a full novel instead of a novella. It reminded me of the Scottish Highlander historical fiction that I enjoy but with a lot more banter between the two main characters.
Draconus, Grace Draven - 2.5 Leida and Magnus. Maybe my least favorite Grace Draven to date. A conflict based on bad assumptions, bad chemistry, and a lackluster HEA.
Dragon Lord, Dana Marton - 3 Draknart and Einin. She's a little too belligerent for my tastes, but his dragon perspective was cute. Liked the ending.
What a great little book! Both stories were excellent! Grace Draven is one of my favorite authors so it’s a given I would love her half of the duology but Dana Marton is new to me. I loved her her story, Dragon Lord, so much that I am anxious to read more of her books.
Two wonderful short stories of dragons shifters. Grace has a lovely tale, with a little twist, and Dana has a powerhouse of a tale with a lady knight and dragon just trying to survive in a hate filled world.
4.5 stars Two novellas from authors Grace Draven and Dana Marton, these dragon shifters tales speak of love, loss, and women who face their dragons, both the physical and emotional ones, with courage and stout hearts.
5 Stars Draconus by Grace Draven
In the first tale, Leida, who was once a favored human-mistress for dragon Magnus Sliverclaw, has been dragged back to face her Dragonmaster’s fury and retribution because four years earlier, she ran away with something he deemed precious. Her punishment involves being essentially a slave for four more years. Clearly though Magnus is angry, his love for Leida has not diminished nor has hers for this fierce dragon who grieved and raged in equal measures at her loss. Leida has two secrets, one of which caused her to make a decision that tore them apart, though to be fair, Magnus had a part in the catalyst for her leaving. Whether they can overcome hurt feelings on both sides and a revelation on Leida’s part will determine the fate of their relationship.
4 stars Dragon Lord by Dana Marton
Einin of Downwood is sent as a sacrificial maiden to Draknart who considers humans to be solely for his pleasure when he is man and dinner for the dragon. Under a curse, he takes out his fiery anger on the villages around him on both humans and animals. Einin’s life in her village has just about as much danger since women are treated little better than chattel and a malevolent priest persecutes her and others he believes to be witches. She is a woman alone with no protector as all her family has been lost to war. So either way, Einin’s life is forfeit until she makes a bargain with Draknart that sets them on a quest in which the dragon has an unrevealed purpose for her.
Both these stories are enjoyable tales of dragons and damsels who although being humans, have strength and courage enough to rival their dragon shifters’ power and magic. Ms. Draven’s entry left me wanting to know more about that world which is the hallmark of a well told tale. Ms. Marton’s story was quite riveting as well though be prepared for a lot of folks having ended up on the dragon meal plan that being the nature of her beasts.
