STRAY
What would you do if you had to choose between your man and your cat? If you were an animal, what kind of animal would you be? Milla asks her bestfriend Gabriel. Milla would be a cat and Gabriel a bird. Thats no surprise, as Milla is a cat therapist. Gabriel is also in love with her. Unaware of this, Milla begins an affair with Josh, a dentist. All goes well until Milla adopts a stray cat, a spooky albino who starts to drive a wedge between her and Josh. When Milla finds she must choose between her man and her cat, the choice she makes has horrifying consequences. For the stray is no ordinary domestic pet, and Milla, it turns out, is no ordinary woman. Inexorably the disturbed workings of Millas mind draws her into a strange world. Girl-meets-boy domesticity is replaced by the cold drip of animal fear. The unbelievable becomes reality. And the shocking, horrifying conclusion is the only escape.

Sulla quarta di copertina troviamo una sola frase per descrivere questo libro:
"Un inquietante noir sul classico triangolo: lei, lui e il gatto"
E anche se "inquietante" è il sentimento perfetto per questa storia, non sono d'accordo sul numero dei soggetti messi in moto.
Milla è molto più che una, perfino Purrl è più di una gatta.
Questo libro è un gioco sapiente di doppi e specchi. Di luci e ombre nascoste.
Ma per quanto puoi nascondere l'ombra?
Nel primo terzo delle 236 pagine di cui è composto il libro è raccontata la luce. L'incontro con Purrl, l'incontro con Josh, un incontro da romance, davvero!
Un riconoscimento immediato, un secondo incontro non programmato, un primo appuntamento imbarazzato, un primo bacio desiderato.
Eppure anche in quelle pagine di luce suonava nella mia testa un campanello d'allarme. Quella nota stonata che sai che è lì e che riesci a sentire stridere senza tregua, superando le altre note invece perfette.
E poi arriva l'ultima parte, la discesa verso le ombre che ha bisogno dei restanti due terzi del libro per arrivare alla sua conclusione, in cui vediamo Milla sprofondare in un mare nero e senza fine, in cui in principio ha iniziato a nuotare da sola, di sua spontanea volontà, convinta di fare la scelta giusta — felice, in un certo senso, di farla — ma che poi l'ha ingoiata del tutto.
Non mi ero mai approcciata al noir, e sinceramente non so se faccia per me.
Il disturbo che mi ha provocato è ancora forte in me, magari è proprio l'indice del fatto che sia scritto bene, questo lo ignoro.
Quello che è certo è che la prossima lettura sarà molto, ma molto leggera e divertente, e che per un paio di giorni guarderò la mia gatta con occhi diversi.

Really enjoyed this book but gosh it’s different:) imagine a Bridget Jones novel then turns into Stephen King horror..... I could say more but then it would give story away.... I enjoyed it a lot and the author really knows cats but then I think she’s a vet? I’m not sure if the cat was evil or the woman was mentally ill and imagined everything???
I’m a cat Sitter and have met some quite aggressive cats in my time but most of the time I felt sorry for the cat as the woman never seemed to feed the poor thing.... quite bizarre book but I couldn’t put it down.....meooooooooooow!

I'm a cat lover with a black cat, so I figured that I would like this book at some level. It was truly bizarre and just over the top weird. Strange, but I also read it without putting it down. I had to know how this book was going to end. The writing was just okay, but the story was quite different. I have a comparison to another book, but that would give the ending away and I hate spoilers. Side note: I was not afraid of my cats after reading this book.
