Who knew retirement could be so dangerous? Maintenance Required is the first book in the Fernandina Beach Mysteries Series. Rex and Gayle Langley have retired early and gotten part-time jobs. Their plan was to relax and spend more time together. They didn't know their time spent together would include solving a murder.
I had forgotten just how good Rodney Riesel's writing is. You get that answer when you find yourself lying down after midnight, and the only light in the room is coming from your tablet. You're fighting off sleep because you HAVE to find out what happens next! Yeah, THAT kind of good, which is what he is. 'Maintenance Required' has a couple of interesting twists, and some great characters we are no doubt being introduced to for the long haul, and subsequent titles.
Want a fun, easy read set in Florida? Look no further, you've arrived. You'll laugh, you'll recognize a few of the characters as having come out of your own town and neighborhood, and you'll want to go back to Fernandina Beach again!
The humor was what drove the story and it was light and had some memorable characters. A good start to the series, although my only knock was that it wasn't longer. I'll be reading the rest of the series soon!
Not my typical type of read. It was good for what it was. My favorite part was that it wasn't long. It was interesting, mellow and kind of cute. I needed a break from romances with the same exact plots. I wanted more of a mystery but this was very light. Still looking for a good suspense.
Probably won't read the others in this series anytime soon, as it's not the type of book I am that into, however it was refreshing.
An entirely captivating who done it, a la amateur Hart to Hart. I don’t imagine Fernandina Beach will ever be the same. I’ve been reading works by Rodney Riesel for well over a year now and to date he has never disappointed me. His various books cover venues from Key West to the rock bound Coast of Maine and every one of his books has had the distinction of totally drawing me into the story AND the surroundings. This book is well worth reading.
When I visited Annette and Charles in Fernandina Beach, FL, they introduced me to this author who set two of his books in Fernandina Beach. The books are mysteries, and the main character is a sarcastic, witty maintenance man who was a contractor before he retired. His wife, who is gorgeous and also a kick-ass, is a former cop. Their adventures in the town with the real police detective just grabbed me from start to end.
Mr Riesel has a great sense of humour and his talent for writing is exemplary. Once I begin one of his great books I don't quit till I turn the last page. His writing is better than tv crap shows. These books are entertainment by words that is so easily visualized. That's TALENT!!!!!
A basic plot told with excellence. A book that stays on track mixed with humor and believable characters. Time passes quickly when the reader makes an effort to pick up this book.
Great story. Like the characters. Like the location since I have been there several times. It is a great small town, and the characters are believable. Fast read and a good plot.
Well, I could dwell on the bad things about this book (sloppy writing, lousy character development, weak attempts at humor), but I won’t. I would like to focus on what I liked about it.
