30 Things Before 30

Rate this book
Listening Length: 4 hours and 11 minutes

'Twas the night before my thirtieth birthday and all through the house- wait, I don't have a house. I rent a ridiculously expensive apartment in New York City with the occasional cockroach and a radiator from 1908 that sounds like it's about to eat me.

Real talk: I'm about to turn the big 3-0. I have spent the last thirty years learning some intense lessons the hard way. I've come into myself and mentally defined what I want my life to look like until my last breath. I have pushed through some of life's hardest and most painful obstacles to get there. I've had to cut cords, move hundreds of miles away, step outside comfort zones, and take my physical and mental health into my own hands.

This book explores thirty different lessons and notions that I've learned before blowing out the candles on my 30th birthday cake. They're fun, raw, yet important nuggets on lessons of love and career, sex and status, health and wellness, family and f*ck boys, and most importantly- the pursuit of genuine self-love and finding true happiness.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review because I requested it and also because I am a grown up so I can do that sort of thing.

I told myself that I will listen to this book before I turned 30, which was May 31st, however like any person life came up. I am glad that I waited until I was after 30 because this book initially made me feel as though I am winning in life. Not to say that I still don't feel that way after I've completely this however this book started off laying down the rules.

This is not your typical self-help book. You would imagine this book telling you what you should and should not do by the time you're 30 but this is the complete opposite. Like every person around the world certain things tend to happen regardless of who you are, gender, color, and background. This book hits all of the life issues we all face and how to make it work for you.

There were certain points in the book where I felt as though Hope Alcocer was talking directly to me. I felt as though she was one of my friends and we were talking about life issues and all of the hardships and the fears and the bullshit that we have encountered. This never once felt as though I was being preached to or talked at. It just felt as a friend giving advice telling me that I need to do better because no one is going to make my life better for me unless I do it myself.

Every chapter hits a point everyone feels in life. The chapter I connected the most with was Chapter 30. This entire chapter told me to try. Even if I fail I should try. There are so many times in one's life where trying is the hardest thing to do. Falling-in-love, putting yourself out there, is not as hard as trying.

This book is truly a must-read and or listen. Stacy Gonzalez is an amazing narrator for this book. She brought hopes words to life. She is the reason why this audiobook felt as though we were just two friends shooting the breeze talking about life in general.

I don't tend to rate self-help/life books as a 5 but this book really is just phenomenal.
