A fugitive captured. A hero forsaken. A secret revealed.
It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Three days. That’s what they promised. But on Earth the danger is unrelenting, and promises are hard to keep.
Now Sheriff Duke is the one on the run, chased by an unexpected enemy eager to finish what they started. An enemy with an agenda that begins with killing him but ends with something worse.
Much, much worse.
Once the secret is out, the universe will never be the same…
M.R. Forbes is the author of a growing number of science-fiction series including Rebellion, War Eternal, Chaos of the Covenant, Stars End, and the Forgotten novels. Having spent his childhood trying to read every sci-fi novel he could find (and write his own too), play every sci-fi video game he could get his hands on, and see every sci-fi movie that made it into the theater, he has a true love of the genre across every medium. He works hard to bring that same energy to his own stories, with a continuing goal to entertain, delight, fascinate, and surprise.
He maintains a true appreciation for his readers and is always happy to hear from them.

How many ways can human society go wrong and how many times can our hero become so damaged and hurt yet miraculously survive? Another fast paced book with just about everyone dying except our superpowered sheriff. I’m running out of interest. Similar to the multiple Tarzan books. After a while, it just became derivative and repetitive.
This certainly was unrelenting. Particularly as the pace didn't really let off from where the previous book finished - something which was both good and not so good, as the action often felt as though it superseded everything else. I also found characters acting in ways which didn't ring true - especially the protagonist. I really believed in and sympathised with him in book 1. This time round, his character seemed a lot less convincing (I found myself thinking, seriously? Would he be such an idiot?), and upstaged by one who I'm starting to suspect might be the series' actual protagonist. Still some great 'set pieces': parts of this are so cinematic, I could visualise the Hollywood props. Also some genuine surprises (largely of a grim nature). Didn't hold together as well as the first (despite fewer typos), but I'm already reading Book 3, which is perhaps the only compliment which really matters.
What I love about M.R. Forbes’ stories is that they are like piranha: they grab you and do not let go until you’re stripped to the bone.
Earth Unrelenting picks up with Nathan Stacker pursuing Sheriff Hayden Duke to recover the one thing that means anything to him: his murdered wife’s wedding ring.
Of course, said wedding has a data chip carrying information his wife was murdered to protect.
And there is nothing Nathan won’t do to get it back...even if it’s making a deal with the enemy.
Hayden, on the other hand, knows the ring somehow means a threat to the safety to everyone on Earth. He suspects a dreadful secret.
The breakneck paces follows Hayden as Nathan tries again and again to catch up with him. Never once does Hayden lose face and stop trying to convince Nathan that they are on the same side.
Twists and turns abound. The story doesn’t let up, doesn’t disappoint.
And Oh boy, what a twist at the end.
Now, excuse me whilst I stick my nose into the next book in the series.
This whole thing is a wild ride. Not just this book. I started this series not at the beginning of it, but at the start of Sheriff Duke's story. And I'm trying now to read them all in order. There are some great characters, both main and side, (but don't get too attached to anyone. Mr. Forbes has a habit of killing people.) I'm hoping to see a meeting between The Sheriff and Sargeant Card, but who knows!
The sci-fi here is cool, and the world being built is very interesting, but it's spread out over a lot of books. Also, each on so far reads more like a thriller than sci-fi, but really that's part of the appeal. It's a very different pace than most sci-fi novels, with space opera-esq stuff, post apocalyptic settings, aliens, Government and espionage stuff. But it all flows together really well. 5/5 for this series, even if each book isn't exactly a perfect score.
Another great book in the series. It kicks off right where Book 1 let us, and with Sheriff Duke sticking to his usual ´badassness´. I thought, however, this series was about Nathan Stacker and his story as a replica in the Próxima Space Force. Although you get some interesting background about stacker and his origins, it feels like the series is slowly focusing again on the Sheriff as a protagonist. I loved the Forsaken series, and love to get to know more about Sheriff Duke and his work at the West Coast, but this could have been a fantastic opportunity to explore the East coast focusing, if not completely, mainly on a different character.
Now the good things: through secondary (as well as more friendly) characters like Rhonna, the General, or Tinker, we finally get to know more about the origins of the trife, and how they may or may not be connected with other beings or even with Proxima Command.
If Book 3 starts off again right where Book 2 left us, there´s a lot more action coming right from the beginning
Not one for reviews typically, usually I give a star rating then move on to the next book. This whole series so far though has been one never ending action adventure for The Sheriff. Poor guy never gets a break. Excellent plot and story line, not that predictable either which seems to plague a lot of these sci-fi and fantasy books I read. I like a book that keeps me wondering. The ending to this one though is what drove me to this review page. Wow, just wow. I definitely did NOT see that ending coming. If you read this before you finish the book, then just wait. You're in for a treat that blows the characters mind as well as yours.
Ok I've just finished the fifth book of MR Forbes' 'Forgotten' universe and I have to say its some of the best Sci-fi I've ever read; Right up there with Bradbury, Clarke and Asimov. So voraciously have I been consuming his work, that is taken me until now to put time aside to actually praise it. Combining two of my favourite genres (Sci-fi and Apocalypse) with the style and characters of an old fashioned Western novel, Forbes takes you on an emotional and imaginative rollercoaster ride, full of twists, shocking reveals and wonderment. Read these books, and read them now.
Very good! I was getting concerned that the old trife fights were starting to get boring as there is a certain level of repetition in them however this book introduces enough new characters and twists to keep it fresh. The trife are still there, but there is another enemy now and the war has gone galactic!
Very good book with a twist at the end that I did not see coming at all! It takes everything the first book and most of this one was setting up and spins it upside down and inside out!
Fast paced story telling for sure. However, it gets pretty repetitive with the constant battles with Trife. It also seems our main hero just can't be beat not matter how much he is beaten, cut up, bitten, scratched, flung, dropped...you get the idea :-) I read the first four books in the previous series where we originally meet the Sheriff. This (book 2) is a second series that has the same main hero. I found that if I skip over the constant battles a little, it helps me get to the underlying story / plot. I have started book 3 so I'm not totally trashing this series :-)
The story continues and the story has only gotten better. The main characters are the same, but their depth has gotten better and better. There have been surprises added, additional characters thrown into the mix, action maxed up, and more intrigue. A very good series.
Great read, read the series starting with book One. So many questions, answered, so many more still to be resolved. The would of, could of, should have loom large, just o the horizon. Come on: thrill me some more . . . Get excited folks this won’t disappoint you. Thanks for sharing.
What keeps a man going? A Velly Goot question der. A resilient will is like a wave form. It has ups and downs. Sheriff Hayden experiences his parallel with a Nathan Stacker on earth.
Good reading with a very enjoyable cast of characters
Like the premise of a forgotten earth set to restrict after being left to for by selfish people who textbooks to die. Good longevity interesting twists and believability. Recommended
This iteration of Mr. Forbes series takes a long time to get going and contains a few grammatical errors, but the last third is exciting, worthy of a Saturday afternoon read.
Reading the forgotten earth books, or the sheriff Hayden series is a callback to the old pulp fiction days for me. It is like a modem version of doc savage, or Jules verne's serials. I love these books!
An escaped soldier from Alpha Proxima. The Sheriff. A cast of postapoliptic survivors. A rouge Space Forces General. And we learn about the Trust, and how they are involved in this.can't wait to read the next book in the series!
I was hooked from the first book in the series. The story continues with exceptional story telling, excellent plot lines and over all kept me interested. I ended up binging 7 books over 2.5 weeks. I can't say enough great things about this series.
Yet another winner, and another hero to follow. Twists and turns, action and adventure combine with an interplanetary who dunnit. A tale of love, betrayal and courage in a post apocalyptic wasteland.
I swear, I am losing days because I can not put these books down. I am hoping that the bad guys will become good guys and that the good guys will win...I am a sucker for the underdog.
